georgeI think I can speak with authority about Men of a Certain Age because I’m a man of that certain age to which they’re referring!

marylynnWe are bigg fans of this show. In case you haven’t seen it yet, it’s centered around three friends in their late forties. It stars Ray Romano of Everybody Loves Raymond fame, Scott Bakula best known for Quantum Leap and Andre Braugher from the movie Glory and the TV series Homicide: Life on the Streets.

___

They recently wrapped up their first season. The three friends gather together and Scott Bakula’s character is going through a crisis.

He feels like his life is meaningless.

His career is in shambles.

He has no family.

He feels like he’s wasted thirty years.

Ray Ramano’s character brings up a quote from Joseph Addison:

“The three grand essentials of happiness are something to do, something to love and something to hope for.”

Do

Carol Lynn Pearson said, “Happiness doesn't come from doing what we like to do, but from liking what we have to do.”

You hear a lot of talk about pursuing your passion these days. We bring it up here at Bigg Success fairly frequently. Passion has its place.

But even when you’re doing what you love, there are parts of it that are tedious. Do it – to the best of your ability – and you’ll be happy.

Our friend Jim Bouchard, who has a great new book that’s about to be released called Think Like a Black Belt, says: “It’s simple but not easy.”

Have you ever noticed that you get the most satisfaction from an achievement that wasn’t easy?

If it’s easy, we take it for granted.

When we have to put our blood, sweat and tears into it, we relish in the accomplishment.

So treasure the price you have to pay for bigg success and bigg success will be that much sweeter!

Love

G.W. Von Leibnitz said: “To love is to place our happiness in the happiness of another.”

There are two ways to take that quote:

  • You have to love someone in order to be happy.
We disagree with that. That’s the myth that Hollywood puts out there.

Jesus said, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” In order to truly love someone else, you have to love yourself first.

  • Love means making someone else happy so you will be happy.
Love is a verb. It implies action.

And it’s also very entrepreneurial. Successful entrepreneurs focus on making their customers happy by helping them solve a problem. Then the entrepreneur will be rewarded; the entrepreneur will be happy.

Bigg success is about entrepreneuring your life. That’s the tie-in.

Hope

Dale Carnegie said, “It isn’t what you have, or who you are, or where you are, or what you are doing that makes you happy or unhappy. It is what you think about.”

Isn’t that powerful?

Do you think you will be a failure? You’re right.

Do you think you will be a bigg success? You will be!

Thinking alone won’t get your there. But hope is part of the foundation of your future success. You can be happy today because you think you will be successful tomorrow.

So happiness is not an external event.
It is an internal condition resulting from choices.

Choose action rather than inaction.

Choose affection rather than apathy.

Choose to dream rather than despair.

The great Ben Franklin said:  “The Constitution only gives people the right to pursue happiness. You have to catch it yourself.”

Why a Start Up Business is Like a Wedding

weddingBigg success is life on your own terms. It’s about entrepreneuring your life – taking control to design and build the life of your dreams. Entrepreneurs must make the most of the resources available to them.

___

___

Think of it like a wedding ceremony. As with any wedding, it’s customary to bring four good luck charms: something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue.

Something old
The first good luck charm at this wedding of resources is something old. One of the most important resources you bring to your start-up business is your experiences.

All of your experiences have brought you to this point. When you’re thinking about your start-up business, consider how your education and the skills you’ve gained along the way have added to your expertise.

Many people have some trouble with this one. You might find it useful to unplug – to retreat to a quiet place where you can search your heart, mind and soul for the common threads in your experiences.

___

marylynnI used to be a radio DJ. Doing a podcast isn’t much different than doing a radio show. But Bigg Success goes beyond that for me. I’ve been an audio production geek for as long as I can remember. Even when I didn’t get paid for it, I hung out in the production room at the radio station. When I was considering my career options after radio, I realized that I also really like gadgets and new technology. That’s one of my roles here at Bigg Success.

___

___

georgeAlong those same lines, every position I’ve ever held in business and many of the roles I filled as a volunteer required me to do what we do here at Bigg Success, sharing knowledge. I just never did it this publicly before.

___

Something new
The second good luck charm at this wedding of resources is something new. You don’t want your start-up business to be just like your competitors. You want to differentiate yourself somehow.

Your vision is a tremendous resource for your start-up business. A clear vision helps you say “no”. It keeps you focused on what you’re trying to accomplish.

When we launched Bigg Success, we didn’t really have a clear vision other than “build a community”. Granted, we looked at that as the first phase. We don’t recommend that you do it our way.

It may sound like we’re saying, “Do as we say, not as we did.” We’re really saying, “Learn from our mistake.”

Something borrowed
It’s time for the third good luck charm at the wedding or resources: something borrowed. Now you may be expecting us to talk about money here. But there’s a resource more important than money that you can leverage.

It’s your network – people you know and people that they know.

It’s amazing what can be accomplished when you tap the power of your network. Let people in your network know about your start-up business, even when you’re just forming the idea.

Something blue
Finally, we come to the final good luck charm at this wedding of resources: something blue. One of the best resources you can bring to your start-up business is customers that are blue in the face.

And they don’t have to be blue hairs!

But you do want a blue-ribbon strategy to tell them about your unique cost-effective solution to their problem.

And then show them the love!

Before you know it, your start-up business will be a blue-chip company.

We now pronounce you a bigg success!
