Why You Should Love Uncertainty

an uncertain path, Bigg SuccessBigg success is life on your own terms. You own your life; you’re the entrepreneur in charge.

Now you may object. You don't want to own your own business. You don't have to own a business to think like an entrepreneur.

However, by thinking like an entrepreneur, you will be able to take control and create the life of your dreams.

But how do you take control in times of great uncertainty?

Think like an entrepreneur!

Entrepreneurs thrive on uncertainty
Change creates two things. It creates uncertainty. This is the reason why the general population hates change. We don’t like uncertainty so we don’t like change.

Entrepreneurs know that change also creates opportunities. That's why they thrive on change.

Business schools teach us to predict the future. Entrepreneurs know they can’t do that. So they don't try.

Instead they create the future they want for themselves. To do that, they look for change.

If they can't find it, they instigate change. Because they want an opportunity!

Don't let uncertainty hold you back. Think like an entrepreneur. Find the opportunity in the midst of the uncertainty. Create your future by capitalizing on the change.

Entrepreneurs are decisive in spite of uncertainty
Most people freeze up in the face of uncertainty. They may fantasize about a better life but they're afraid to take action.

Entrepreneurs dream of a better life as well. But they don't let their fears control them; they control their fears by taking action.

Remember public speaking class? Did you have the jitters before you gave your speech? Once you got started, didn’t they go away?

That’s how it works for most people. Action settles the nerves. Your focus shifts from thinking about performing to actually performing. Every time you do it, it gets a little easier.

Do it enough and you’ll be a peak performer!

It works the same way with most endeavors. The anxiety only exists (and grows larger) in the face of inaction. The more you think about doing something, the less likely you are to do it. So just do it. Get started!

Entrepreneurs focus on the downside
This is the real key to everything we've discussed so far. In fact, it’s the real key to dealing with uncertainty.

Business schools teach us to weigh the upside against the risks. Entrepreneurs don't worry too much about the upside. They focus on the downside.

In other words, they focus on making the risks manageable. If they can't eliminate it altogether, they find ways to minimize it. If it can't be minimized to an acceptable level, they share it.

The only limit to your ability to limit your downside is your own creativity!

Entrepreneurs are resource-full
By this, we don't mean entrepreneurs are full of resources. To the contrary!

Entrepreneurs look at what they can accomplish with the resources they already have. Then they find ways to stretch these resources to the fullest!

What resources do you have? Your most important resource is you – your time, your expertise, your perceptions and your abilities.

You have your network – the people you know and the people they know. This is where the leverage is today. With social media, it's easier to build and maintain a network than ever before.

Those are the intangible resources. You also have physical resources – money and assets – that may be useful in launching the life of your dreams.

You, too, can entrepreneur your life to thrive on uncertainty. That’s bigg success!

How You Define Yourself Determines How Far You Go

define your terms, Bigg SuccessBigg success is life on your own terms. The terms you use to define yourself can do one of two things:

They can empower you or …

… they can limit you.

___

Mary-Lynn FosterI can totally relate to that. In my previous career, I defined myself as a Radio DJ. Others defined me that way too. It’s what I did for eighteen years.

___

An industry in decline

___

George KruegerObviously, now you’re here at Bigg Success. What sparked the change?

___

___

Mary-Lynn FosterA couple of things. First, the outlook for the radio industry was grim and it continues to struggle.

___

___

George KruegerI remember, Mary-Lynn, as you were considering your options, we looked at the financials for the industry because you were concerned about your possible opportunities if you didn’t make a career change.

___

___

Mary-Lynn FosterYou’re right. I remember we looked at the financials for my employer. Their sales were declining about 4% a year. To make sure it wasn’t just the company I worked for, we also looked at the financials for the biggest company in the industry. Their sales were also declining at about the same rate. So I knew it was an industry-wide issue and not a single-firm deal.

___

___

George KruegerI also remember us discussing how difficult it would be for your managers to deal with a 4% decrease in sales and costs that were rising about 4% a year, which is another thing we saw from the financials. That’s an 8% per year swing. You knew that pay raises were going to be tough to come by!

___

___

Mary-Lynn FosterWhich leads to my second reason: I felt I had reached a plateau with the position I had – both in terms of money but, even more importantly to me, in terms of creative freedom. I could have moved, but that would have meant leaving you, George.

___

___

George KruegerWell, I’m certainly glad to hear I was part of the consideration!

___

___

Mary-Lynn FosterAnd of course, even if I did pack up and move, there was no guaranteed job security even in a bigger market. That’s just the state of radio today.

___

___

George KruegerDid you see any possibilities if you wanted to stay in the industry?

___

___

Mary-Lynn FosterI could have moved into management or sales, but that’s not what I wanted.

___

Feeling loss and lost

___

George KruegerSo you saw no real opportunity and decided the time had come to leave the business. How difficult was this for you emotionally?

___

___

Mary-Lynn FosterIt was heartbreaking. I busted my tail for eighteen years with a different outcome in mind. I didn’t think it was fair. I stomped my feet. I cried about it and mourned the loss. And I felt lost because it was the only thing I knew.

___

Feeling empowered by redefining yourself

___

George KruegerHow did you turn it around?

___

___

Mary-Lynn FosterI redefined myself and here’s why: I started paying attention to new media. People were using blogs, podcasts and video to create and promote their own brand. A light bulb went off – they were broadcasters. I realized I didn’t need radio to still be a broadcaster.

___

___

George KruegerOf course at the same time, I was going through my own career change since I had sold my businesses. We were able to combine our individual strengths and be partners in business as well as life.

___

___

Mary-Lynn FosterWhich is exactly what I wanted – a partner! Toward the end of my radio career, I had left my job as a mid-day host to co-host a morning show. That’s the dream gig in radio.

___

___

George KruegerYeah, getting to work at 4 AM … that’s not my idea of a dream gig!

___

___

Mary-Lynn FosterThen my company flipped the station and changed the dynamic of the morning show from two people to one. Fortunately, I guess, I was the one who got to keep her job. Unfortunately, I was bored to tears. I literally remember sitting in the DJ booth and saying out loud to no one, “I’m so freaking bored.”

___

___

George KruegerWell, I hope you’re not bored now?

___

___

Mary-Lynn FosterI’m too busy to be bored! As I said earlier, I have a partner. What’s interesting is that George and I are one of the few co-hosted podcasts in our genre.

___

___

George KruegerWe also speak together. We get comments all the time about how much people like the two-person dynamic.

___

___

Mary-Lynn FosterNow that we’re about two-and-a-half years into Bigg Success, I define myself as an entrepreneur who happens to broadcast. While sometimes I still feel lost in this new space, I just love all of the personal and professional growth I’m experiencing.

___

You determine your terms but your terms determine how far you’ll go. Use terms that empower you and you’ll reach bigg success!

How has your definition of yourself changed over time?
