Passion Can Be Elusive for Entrepreneurs

passion for entrepreneurs, Bigg SuccessBigg success if life on your own terms. Almost by definition, that means living our passions. Spending significant time – at work and play – doing things we love.

As we’ve talked with people about their challenges of living their lives on their own terms, we’ve found that a lot of people don’t love the work they do.

Why don’t we live our passion?

We think there are a number of reasons for this. We may not know how to find our passion or we may not do what it takes to discover it.

Another reason may be that sometimes we roll with the punches based on the decisions we’ve made before. We take what life gives us instead of creating the life we want. Let’s look at two examples of this:

1. Your goal was to own your own home.
So you got a job that paid well so you could save enough to buy it. It wasn’t necessarily what you loved to do, but it paid the bills and let you accomplish something significant.

2. You wanted to have a family.
So you did. Your job allowed you to support your family and pay for their future needs.

It’s not that we live robotic lives. We’ve made choices which have given us what we want. But many people feel like there’s something more.

Putting profit over passion

___

George KruegerI relate to this subject all to well. Bigg success is life on your own terms. For years, my term was opportunity. I put profit over passion. I responded to opportunities rather than spending time contemplating my personal passions and preferences and then proactively searching for an opportunity that was congruent with them.

___

___

Mary-Lynn FosterWhat would you have done differently if you could do it all over?

___

___

George KruegerI’ve always been passionate about entrepreneuring – working for myself, owning my own business. But if I could do it all over, the type of businesses I owned would be different.

___

___

Mary-Lynn FosterSo what would that business be?

___

___

George KruegerSomething educational – training, coaching or even consulting. Bigg Success and our related ventures fit me much better than the businesses I did before.

___

___

Mary-Lynn FosterSo why do you think you put opportunity over passion?

___

___

George KruegerAt first, I didn’t know any better. I had bills to pay and I looked for an opportunity to do my own thing while paying those bills. Just like the examples we’ve already talked about.

___

Security over passion

___

Mary-Lynn FosterBut you could have done that with a consulting gig?

___

___

George KruegerYou’re right. In fact, at one point I planned to do just that. I had just finished my Master’s degree. But then life presented an opportunity – my partners wanted out of a business we owned. So I ended up buying them out. I felt safer with an established business than starting from scratch.

___

___

Mary-Lynn FosterSo you chose the safety of an established business rather than starting your own consulting firm which would have fit more closely with your passions. What made you finally go for the business you really wanted to be in?

___

Nourish your discontent

___

George KruegerAs the years progressed, I started feeling some discontent. I still loved being in business for myself, but I wasn’t completely happy with the work I was doing. So I started thinking about the work I wanted to do.

___

___

Mary-Lynn FosterIt’s often discontent that is key to thinking about things like this. So what did you come up with?

___

___

George KruegerWell, I realized very clearly that teaching, training, and coaching were things I really got a kick out of. And I accepted the fact that those things needed to be a part of my work. So I looked at my existing businesses and saw the need for additional training. So I personally built training programs for our people. I was doing more of what I loved and our businesses were more profitable, in part because we had more knowledgeable and more motivated employees.

___

___

Mary-Lynn FosterObviously eventually you moved on. Now you’re doing Bigg Success which is completely congruent with what you love.

___

If you’re feeling like there has to be more, do a personal assessment. You may find ways to be more engaged with what you’re doing now. It will also help you prepare for what you want to do next.

We’ve come to realize that it’s a process. You don’t wake up one day and have all the answers. You discover your passions over time by constantly learning about yourself. That leads to bigg success!

What are your passions? How did you discover them?

Money is the Root of All Evil

moneySay something often enough and people start to believe it – even if it’s wrong. A lot of commonly held beliefs about money fit that description. One such money myth is:

“Money is the root of all evil.”

If you’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it a thousand times.

___

People who have money are evil
If you buy it, you have no choice but to look down on people who have money. After all, they must be evil, right?

They got their money by cheating people or walking all over people. They’re greedy.

People who want money are evil
It can also be used as an excuse for not having money (or for not trying to get more money). If you’re money motivated, you must be evil by definition.

In other words, it can be substituted for the real reason why someone doesn’t have money. They tell themselves that money is the root of all evil and, therefore, they don’t want money which is why they don’t have money.

But, in some cases, the real reason that they don’t have it is that they are just plain lazy. They lack the ambition necessary to go out and get it.

In other cases, they may give up too easily when the inevitable obstacles present themselves. They lack the persistence necessary to reach bigg success.

In either case, the biggest fool is the person who fools themselves. They fool themselves into thinking that money is not something you should seek. They tell themselves that money isn’t only unnecessary, it’s undesirable.

Because money makes you do bad things.

Money isn’t important

Now it is true that money isn’t important to some people. That’s fine. Bigg success is life on your own terms. For some people, that means living simply or frugally to lessen the need for money.

And that’s a strategy for reaching bigg success. But it’s not judgmental (or at least doesn’t have to be). They can live their lives the way they want without expecting others to do the same.

It’s a moral judgment

On the other hand, thinking that money is the root of all evil and looking down on people – who have it or seek it – is judgmental. We’ve also been hurling some judgments so far so we’ll move on.

The real problem
Everything we’ve said above doesn’t even begin to debunk this myth like what we’re about to say.

“Money is the root of all evil” comes from a verse in the Bible. The problem is that it misquotes the verse. It leaves out the critical first part. The full quote is:

The love of money is the root of all evil.”

Bigg success is life on your own terms. Terms are important. When you compare the full quote to the truncated version, that one little term, love, makes a bigg difference.

Money itself isn’t the root of all evil. However, our attitude about money can be the root of all evil.

Money is just a resource
There is certainly more to life than just money. In fact, it’s only one of the five elements of bigg success. Within the five elements, time and money are our two resources.

So that’s all that money is: a resource. A resource that’s neutral. It can be used for good or for evil.

Mary-Lynn FosterAs Bigg Success becomes a bigg success, we plan to donate a significant portion of our profit to causes that relate to our core mission here – to educate and inspire entrepreneurs and the organizations that serve them.

___

___

George KruegerWe settled on this toward the end of last year as we were planning for the year ahead and reviewing our overall business plan. We can’t claim this was an original idea – it came from a book of my dad’s that I read a long time ago called God Owns My Business.

___

It’s about an entrepreneur named Stanley Tam. His Christian values are definitely prevalent throughout the book. So if that offends you, don’t read it.

What we found interesting was that he set up a foundation to which he sold all the stock in his corporation. Then all of his company’s profits went to the foundation. The foundation gave money to worthy causes.

You make money. Then money is what you make it. It’s life on your own terms. That’s bigg success!
