This is the final show in our ten-show series on lifelong learning. Today we’ll discuss five activities that will make you healthy, wealthy and wise all at the same time.

___

___

Now we’ll warn you – these activities require some multi-tasking. We usually suggest less multi-tasking but these are things ideally suited for doing more than one thing at a time.

___

Like walking and chewing gum at the same time!

___

___

That may make you healthier, George, but it misses the mark on helping you get wealthier and wiser. Here’s a better one: Listen to The Bigg Success Show while you walk on the treadmill.

___

___

Shameless self-promotion, Mary-Lynn! But you’re right – the great thing about podcasts is that they’re easy to download and take with you.

___

___

Of course, it doesn’t have to be our show. There’s a lot of great downloadable audio that will help you be wealthier and wiser. You could probably devour an entire week’s worth of our shows in one session on the treadmill. Then fill in the rest of the week with other great podcasts.

___

Ride your bike to the library and check out a book on money.
If you have a library within biking distance, this is a great way to get a little exercise while bulking up your knowledge of personal finance.

There are so many great books on investing at the library. You can see such a history. There are books from days gone by full of timeless principles sitting alongside books about current issues.

Just don’t try reading the book on the way home!

Stretch while watching one of the financial news networks.

___

This is a great way to get a little extra stretching in. I know I feel a lot better when I keep myself limber!

___

___

There’s so much that can be learned from watching financial news. Get the vocabulary down if you don’t have it already. Learn what’s going on in the economy and how it affects your money. Try to understand why certain stocks, or certain industries, are being recommended. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg!

___

Of course, you could also watch a DVD on personal finance.

Take an advisor out for a rousing round of golf!
Don’t rent a cart. Over the course of the course, talk about your finances. Of course, you could wait until the nineteenth hole!

When we say advisor, we’re talking about your financial planner, your attorney, your accountant, your banker, your insurance broker, your coach or anyone else who advises you about your finances.

You may not be into golf. Maybe you prefer tennis. Or racquetball. Or some other activity. Golf is a great activity for talking and walking. However, you can also talk before or after your chosen activity.

Of course, our quote today comes from Ben Franklin. Only we’ve only hit on the last part of it. The full quote is:

“Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.”

___

Even on those rare occasions where I get the “early to bed” part done, I can’t seem to get the early to rise part down!

___

___

You’ll be happy to know, Mary-Lynn, our fifth and final activity doesn’t require that.

___

Read your goal statement right before you get a good night’s sleep and first thing when you get up in the morning.
There are so many benefits of getting a good night’s sleep – better health, increased productivity and a sharper mind. What more do we need to say?

Reading your goals right before you go to bed and immediately upon rising helps you internalize them. Your vision of success gets fixed in your conscious mind so your subconscious mind can work to find ways to get there.

We love synergy here at Bigg Success. Look for ways to be healthier, wealthier and wiser all at the same time. That’s win – win – win! That’s bigg success!

How do you get healthy, wealthy and wise?

We’d love it if you’d share that with us. You can do that by:

You and you alone create your future. You are the only person, place or thing with that power. With that being the case, it's up to you to create the future of your dreams.

One way to do that is to look back so you can look forward. Reflecting upon the past and pulling lessons away so your future is bigger and brighter. With the New Year upon us, now is a great time to review last year so next year lives up to its promise for you.

There's a simple three-stage framework for performing this exercise. It involves asking yourself three questions:

___

___

What?

Start with the actual events of this year. What happened? Describe major events in your life. As you record your answers, test your perceptions to make sure they reflect the reality of the situation. If it helps, pretend that you are a reporter objectively recording the facts of the event.

So what?

At this stage, you move from reporting to understanding, from logic to emotion. That's why it was so important to get the facts right in the first step. What did this experience mean to you? How did it make you feel? Why did you feel that way? What have you learned?

Now what?

The previous two questions lead to this one. How will you apply the lessons you learned? What specific actions will you take as a result of the events you've outlined?

These three simple questions serve as a great outline to review major events in your life and develop forward-thinking plans to be a bigg success.

Let’s look at a couple of examples, using events from 2008.

Example: Volatile stocks

What?
The stock market can be very volatile.

So what?
I can lose money if I don’t understand the risk and how to manage it.

Now what?
I will learn more about investing and asset allocation. I won’t invest money in stocks that I will need in the next ten years. I will pay closer attention to my quarterly reports to make sure I maintain the proper asset allocation given my age and goals.

Example: Layoffs

What?
Times are tough at work; layoffs are possible.

So what?
It makes me nervous. I think I could lose my job.

Now what?
I will look for ways to help my company save money. I will make sure my boss is aware of the projects I complete successfully. I will look for opportunities to add additional skills so I’m more competitive.

Solid goals

In our examples, the “Now what’s” are a little bit fuzzy. You really want to refine them to turn them into solid goals. For instance, looking at the second example, instead of saying “I will look for ways to help my company save money,” turn that into “I will find one way to save my company $X (you pick a relevant amount) in the next 30 days.”

___

Would you like more help turning your thoughts into concrete goals? It involves asking yourself three questions: ___ ___ What? Start with the actual events of this year. What happened? Describe major events in your life. As you record your answers, test your perceptions to make sure they reflect the reality of the situation. If it helps, pretend that you are a reporter objectively recording the facts of the event. So what? At this stage, you move from reporting to understanding, from logic to emotion. That#39;s why it was so important to get the facts right in the first step. What did this experience mean to you? How did it make you feel? Why did you feel that way? What have you learned? Now what? The previous two questions lead to this one. How will you apply the lessons you learned? What specific actions will you take as a result of the events you#39;ve outlined? These three simple questions serve as a great outline to review major events in your life and develop forward-thinking plans to be a bigg success. Let#8217;s look at a couple of examples, using events from 2008. Example: Volatile stocks What? The stock market can be very volatile. So what? I can lose money if I don#8217;t understand the risk and how to manage it. Now what? I will learn more about investing and asset allocation. I won#8217;t invest money in stocks that I will need in the next ten years. I will pay closer attention to my quarterly reports to make sure I maintain the proper asset allocation given my age and goals. Example: Layoffs What? Times are tough at work; layoffs are possible. So what? It makes me nervous. I think I could lose my job. Now what? I will look for ways to help my company save money. I will make sure my boss is aware of the projects I complete successfully. I will look for opportunities to add additional skills so I#8217;m more competitive. Solid goals In our examples, the #8220;Now what#8217;s#8221; are a little bit fuzzy. You really want to refine them to turn them into solid goals. For instance, looking at the second example, instead of saying #8220;I will look for ways to help my company save money,#8221; turn that into #8220;I will find one way to save my company $X (you pick a relevant amount) in the next 30 days.#8221; ___ Would you like more help turning your thoughts into concrete goals?

___

The calendars of kids today are as busy as ours. Between school and all their extracurricular activities, they’re too busy to really play.

___

I saw an interview with a little girl awhile back. She was brilliant, doing well in school and excelling at everything she did. Her one wish was that she could just have some time to play.

___

Isn’t that sad?

Play pays

Don’t get us wrong – extracurricular activities are great, but it’s good to also have time to engage in activities that don’t have a goal with performance stress attached.

It’s good for kids to just play. It’s good for them physically, socially, and mentally. Play helps them develop their imagination and creativity as well as socially – all important skills in the years ahead.

Turning back the clock

Dr. Robyn cites a growing trend of kids having fitness club memberships. How many of us just love going to the gym? Do you remember playing … just good old fashioned play? It was fun. Something you couldn’t wait to do. You got some great exercise, but you didn’t watch the clock like you do when you’re working out at the club.

Speaking of clocks, the sad part is that we seem to be turning back the clock. Dr. Robyn’s article includes a quote that says kids are about two years behind in their development compared to sixty years ago. It seems we’re not evolving; we’re going backwards.

We need to do a 180

So let’s let the kids be kids. In fact, let’s take it a step further. Let’s do a 180 degree turn – instead of trying to turn kids into little adults, let’s become bigg kids.

Not in an immature way … just for fun and all the benefits that come with it.

We need to be more child-like. Do you remember being fascinated by bugs? Of course, we’re not talking about bugs inside the house. But isn’t it fascinating to just watch a praying mantis? How relaxing is it to see butterflies fluttering around?

___

That’s one of the reasons I love going for walks. I just love seeing all the cool plants. There’s a lake close to our house so I can watch the fish. It sure beats going to the fitness center and watching TV!

___

We get so busy working that we don’t have a second to spare. Sometimes we even block people out so we can get all of our work done. That’s when play time is especially important. Play time is social time. You can relax and talk with people.

And you learn … things that you might not learn any other way. Because other people have different interests. By playing – socializing – you expand our interests. That helps you look at old problems in new ways. You find solutions that you may not find if you don’t get out of your routine.

Play expands our imaginations. Our imagination leads us to be more creative, more innovative. Which is how we find those bigg ideas that lead to bigg success!
