Getting all aTwitter, we like that! We recently attended a Tweetup, which is an organized event that brings tweeters in a community together. In addition to being a great networking opportunity, we saw this as a chance to get twitter advice from our fellow tweeters. So we asked people at the #cutweetup to share their "twisdom" with all of us.

___

___

Getting Started

Many people still just don't "get" Twitter. We think @debbyAuble shared a great analogy for what Twitter is:

___

It's like a spider web…a communication web so then you can reach out to all the other conversations people have, and it's simple and it's easy, and it's short and concise.

___

So catch some great conversations in the web you cast on Twitter!

Andrew Timms is another great guy to follow on Twitter, @SpectraArt. He shared this advice for beginning twitterers:

___

People are interested in sharing what they have to say, so come to Twitter prepared to listen more than you're prepared to express. And and share value. Try to find things that you think the people that you are associated with will want to know more about.

___

We think this is something to think when using all forms of social media. Listening is a key part to communication.

___

I remember when I first got on Twitter, I had a hard time getting used to that 140 character limit.

___

___

You know who's not on Twitter? Muammar Gaddafi. Maybe they should put limitations on all political speeches to 140 characters.

___

___

I think you are on to something, George!

___

Our friend @kbfoster told us how the character limit has helped her:

___

It has taught me how to condense my thoughts so that I can communicate with others and be brief.

___

Twitter for Business

We get asked all the time how businesses can best use Twitter. We asked @mhowie, who manages the account for @news_gazette how they benefit from using Twitter:

___

Professionally for us, it's a great resource. People are very good at sending us information when there is an accident in town, when there's a power outage, when a storm is coming. We're able to pass that information along then to build this online community.

___

All businesses can use Twitter to solicit feedback, to share expertise, and to communicate with existing and potential customers.

Finding People of Interest

How do you find people in your area on Twitter? @cumomOf2 has done such a good job of making local connections, she's recognized when she goes out to eat because of her Twitter profile!

___

She's the Shaq of Champaign!

___

Here's what she did:

___

I started following people I knew like @devivo and @mrschicken. Then, I just did searches for "champaign" and used some of the online directories to find people. Lots of people in your area follow your local news organizations on Twitter, so follow them to connect with more people in your community. Think about other organizations too like your local library or farmers market…look at who they follow to find even more local people to follow.

___

Another thing that is great about Twitter is how you can meet people in your profession or an area of special interest to you from all over the world. @Tricon is a pro at this and here's what he suggests:

___

Well now that Twitter is so focused on search, check the sidebar to find trending topics and use the search box to search for things that you are interested it and find other people that are like-minded. That's the easiest and most direct way to do it. Also when people follow you, you can see who they are talking to, so get involved in their conversations as well and make contacts that way.

___

Multiple Twitter Personalities & Summoning a Tweet

Some individuals and businesses manage multiple Twitter accounts, like our friend Steve. He manages a personal account @holstein, a radio station account @wixy and his radio show prep service account @interprep. Here's the free tool he uses to manage them with ease:

___

I'm using Hootsuite. I can tab between my accounts to update the individual accounts whenever I want to. Another great feature is that I can schedule tweets in advance, so I can be tweeting without actually tweeting while I'm here at the Tweetup.

___

Thanks to @news_gazette and @boltini for hosting our #cutweetup, and thanks to all the tweeters who offered up their tips.

A one. A two. A three. Take me out to the ball game …

We can hear Harry Carey singing it right now! (We’ll warn you: If you listen to our show today, you can hear why we could never be on American Idol!)

___

___

Bigg success is life on your own terms. There are five elements of bigg success – money, time, growth, work and play. Today we’ll focus on play.

If you’re a regular reader, you know we’ve confessed that play is the thing we struggle with the most. We love our work. We’ve found that thinking about the five elements of bigg success helpful because we make sure we schedule some play time.

We love baseball, but going to a Major League Baseball game can be a real budget-bender. By the time you buy the tickets, pay for parking, and grab a hot dog, you can spend some serious smack!

You don’t have to throw your budget a curve ball to have fun at the old ball game

We feel fortunate to live in a University town. We have some bigg time sporting events, including a baseball team that is doing very well this year. Go Illini!

Last year, we kept talking about going to a game but never made it. They start early when it’s too cold for us to watch a game outside.

This year we made a commitment to go, so we were keeping an eye on their schedule. Lo and behold, they ran a bigg promotion – you could get into the game for free (it normally costs $5) and you could even get free food.

Now that’s a bigg deal!

And the promotion was a bigg success! They had a record attendance. In fact, so many people showed up, we decided it was worth buying food from the concession stand instead of waiting for the free stuff.

It was a great game. We had lots of fun and some good time together as a couple (see pictures on our Flickr page). That’s the best part. The second best part was that Illinois came back to win in the ninth inning!

But what if you don’t have a University team in your area? Can you still take in a ball game on the cheap? Baseball, you bet!

Summer college baseball leagues. College baseball players finish their collegiate schedules early. They want to keep playing without jeopardizing their amateur status. So college leagues have sprung up. We have a team about thirty miles from us (ticket prices are $6 – $9). Check the National Alliance of College Summer Baseball site for the team closest to you.

Minor leagues. Future professional baseball players have to train somewhere. There are minor league teams all over the country. We have a AAA team fairly close to us ($6 – $10 for a ticket). If you don’t know of one in your area, check out the Minor League Baseball site.

Amateur leagues. We have several teams in our area like this. You can take in a game for a few bucks plus any food and drinks you may want.

Little Leagues. We love watching the Little League World Series on television. Check out the raw talent in your area to a Little League game. You can’t beat the price and there are games all over. We have a field within walking distance of our house.

So what’s the bigg idea? Tap into your local community and have a bigg day out at the ball park!

<itunes:summary>A one. A two. A three. Take me out to the ball game ... We can hear Harry Carey singing it right now! (We#8217;ll warn you: If you listen to our show today, you can hear why we could never be on American Idol!) ___ ___ Bigg success is life on your own terms. There are five elements of bigg success #8211; money, time, growth, work and play. Today we#8217;ll focus on play. If you#8217;re a regular reader, you know we#8217;ve confessed that play is the thing we struggle with the most. We love our work. We#8217;ve found that thinking about the five elements of bigg success helpful because we make sure we schedule some play time. We love baseball, but going to a Major League Baseball game can be a real budget-bender. By the time you buy the tickets, pay for parking, and grab a hot dog, you can spend some serious smack! You don#8217;t have to throw your budget a curve ball to have fun at the old ball game We feel fortunate to live in a University town. We have some bigg time sporting events, including a baseball team that is doing very well this year. Go Illini! Last year, we kept talking about going to a game but never made it. They start early when it#8217;s too cold for us to watch a game outside. This year we made a commitment to go, so we were keeping an eye on their schedule.
