People are always looking for a new tool.

It may not be necessary. Make the most of the tools you already have.

Ingenuity leads to BIGG success.

People think a new tool will make life easier.
Forget about finding the easy route. Be willing to work hard.
Industriousness leads to BIGG success.

People worry about the condition of their tools.
Keep your tools in good repair. Then they’ll be there when you need them. Preparedness leads to BIGG success.

People are too concerned about using the right tool.
Think outside the tool box. Find more uses for your current tools.
Flexibility leads to BIGG success.

People give up if the tool they’re using doesn’t get the job done quickly.
Don’t worry how long it takes to do the job. Just finish the task somehow. Persistence leads to BIGG success.

People spend too much time looking at all of their tools.
Tools are only useful when used. Grab one and get to work.
Action leads to BIGG success.

You have all the tools you need at your disposal.
Even if you don’t, tools can be bought.

You may not know how to use the tool.
If you don’t, you can learn.

The secret to reaching BIGG success isn’t the tool. It’s YOU!
The operator of the tool is much more important than the tool.

So quit chasing tools. Stop making excuses. Get off your duff. Use the tools you already have. It leads to BIGG success.

So far we’ve discussed:

Part I: what a tribe is, what the leader does, and why quality trumps quantity

Part II: why Seth became a leader, the power of one, and the importance of leverage

Today we wrap up our conversation. Let’s get to it!

___

___

Change and chaos creates opportunity

___

Seth, one of the constants we see in your new book is change. I teach Entrepreneurial Finance at our local university. One of the things we talk about is that entrepreneurship is the science of change. There’s a quote in your new book that I just love, “The rush from stability is a huge opportunity for you.” Change does create opportunity for all of us, especially small business people.

___

___

We can look back, before the Industrial Revolution, to when there was a king so the politics never changed. There was a farm and a craftsman so technology and markets never changed. It was almost impossible to cause your station in life to adjust in your lifetime. When someone would come along, like Josiah Wedgwood, and go from being an itinerant potter to a multi-millionaire, that was a once in a lifetime experience per country. Now it happens weekly. Now we’re seeing that all of the change and chaos creates opportunity. There’s no doubt in my mind that we’re going to see newly minted millionaires all over the world because of this chaos. We’re going to see newly influential musicians because of the meltdown of the music industry. If the music industry had stayed the way it was, the only way that you were going to become popular was by running into Neil Young’s A&R guy and hope he liked you. Now someone like Jen Chapin can come along, become popular, and have a following just because she deserves it, not because of someone she knows.

___

You know it don’t come easy

___

It’s very empowering. When the status quo doesn’t work anymore, it forces you to be innovative. Innovation is exciting and that creates that passion that you talk about that creates that tribe that wants to follow you and talk about you.

___

___

That’s it, but I’m nervous about one thing. We may be fooling people into thinking that this is easy. Just because it’s happening a lot, just because it’s powerful, doesn’t mean it’s easy. Most people who want to make change are fine with that. They’re fine with the fact that’s it going to take time, effort, dedication and risk in order to make this stuff happen. They just want to know it’s possible. And it is possible if you’re willing to do the work. My blog was not popular for years and years and years. As an entrepreneur, I have failed literally dozens of times before I had success. But I knew it was possible. Once I knew it was possible, then it was worth all the effort.

___

How Seth picked himself up from failure

___

See now that’s interesting because you talk about how it failed. How did you pick yourself up from that and not give up?

___

___

I think there are a couple of ways. One is to remind yourself how horrible it is to be a bank teller.

___

___

Now wait a minute, there are some bank tellers out there who enjoy what they do.

___

___

I think that’s true. But most of them don’t want to be entrepreneurs. If you want to be an entrepreneur – if you want to run your own decision base – then the thought of the alternative helps you focus. But the other thing is, my friend Zig Ziglar has this phrase which is, if he’s only going to succeed one out of ten times, that means every “No” gets him one “No” closer to nine. Nine “No’s” is great because the tenth one is going to be a “Yes.” I felt like, as long as I kept surviving, that was success. Entrepreneurs who survive long enough, sooner or later, are successful.

___

___

But also, read The Dip, so you know whether to get out, right?

___

___

What The Dip would say is you should abandon tactics all the time. A tactic that’s a dead end, that isn’t working and that isn’t helping you be the best in the world, should be abandoned. I would include in that a career choice – like sticking with a particular radio station. That’s a tactic. But a strategy – a strategy that says I’m going to be a successful solo entrepreneur or I am going to make it as a musician – isn’t so easily abandoned. That’s what keeps you pushing through the dip.

___

Please stand up

___

Before we let you go, we have to ask about one more thing. Toward the end of Tribes, you talk about how some people are going to rip on you about the style of this book and the way you’ve written it. George and I absolutely loved it. It’s such an easy read; it flows so nicely. What’s the problem with it?

___

___

First of all, thank you. That was very nice. The problem with it is I don’t tell you what to do tomorrow. I don’t say, “If you’re a dummy, here are the twelve steps.” I don’t give you a checklist. I don’t give you a list of tactics or tools or copy you can lift and use as your own. Part of the essence of being a leader is that you’re going to have to lead differently than the guy before you. Part of the essence of being a leader is that every tribe demands its own style of leader. No one else can do that. You have to figure it out. That’s frustrating for some people.

___

___

That’s interesting, Seth, because with my class, I purposefully leave it a little more unstructured than the students would like. The reason I do that is because then they put that structure in place. By doing that, they learn how to be an entrepreneur. It’s helpful I think. With your book, you read it and create those checklists yourself.

___

___

I think that’s a great way to look at it. This summer, I had some interns. The way that I ran the application process is that I invited the 160 people who applied to join a Facebook group. Then I didn’t tell them what to do; I just watched. It was really interesting because, of the 160, twenty immediately took charge – planning activities, posting interesting notes, and starting conversations. The remaining 140 waited to be told what to do. And I imagine you can guess who I considered hiring.

___

___

The leaders stood up and stood out.

___

Thanks so much Seth! It was fantastic talking with you. We wish you bigg success with this great book.

Seth is also the founder of Squidoo, where you can find a special page about Tribes. It’s full of great freebies like podcasts, excerpts and more! We highly recommend Tribes to you!

Next time, we say the less money you have, the better. Until then, here’s to your bigg success!

Now we#8217;re seeing that all of the change and chaos creates opportunity. There#8217;s no doubt in my mind that we#8217;re going to see newly minted millionaires all over the world because of this chaos. We#8217;re going to see newly influential musicians because of the meltdown of the music industry. If the music industry had stayed the way it was, the only way that you were going to become popular was by running into Neil Young#8217;s A#38;R guy and hope he liked you. Now someone like Jen Chapin can come along, become popular, and have a following just because she deserves it, not because of someone she knows. ___ You know it don#8217;t come easy ___ It#8217;s very empowering. When the status quo doesn#8217;t work anymore, it forces you to be innovative. Innovation is exciting and that creates that passion that you talk about that creates that tribe that wants to follow you and talk about you. ___ ___ That#8217;s it, but I#8217;m nervous about one thing. We may be fooling people into thinking that this is easy. Just because it#8217;s happening a lot, just because it#8217;s powerful, doesn#8217;t mean it#8217;s easy. Most people who want to make change are fine with that. They#8217;re fine with the fact that#8217;s it going to take time, effort, dedication and risk in order to make this stuff happen. They just want to know it#8217;s possible. And it is possible if you#8217;re willing to do the work. My blog was not popular for years and years and years. As an entrepreneur, I have failed literally dozens of times before I had success. But I knew it was possible. Once I knew it was possible, then it was worth all the effort. ___ How Seth picked himself up from failure ___ See now that#8217;s interesting because you talk about how it failed. How did you pick yourself up from that and not give up? ___ ___ I think there are a couple of ways. One is to remind yourself how horrible it is to be a bank teller. ___ ___ Now wait a minute, there are some bank tellers out there who enjoy what they do. ___ ___ I think that#8217;s true. But most of them don#8217;t want to be entrepreneurs. If you want to be an entrepreneur #8211; if you want to run your own decision base #8211; then the thought of the alternative helps you focus. But the other thing is, my friend Zig Ziglar has this phrase which is, if he#8217;s only going to succeed one out of ten times, that means every #8220;No#8221; gets him one #8220;No#8221; closer to nine. Nine #8220;No#8217;s#8221; is great because the tenth one is going to be a #8220;Yes.#8221; I felt like, as long as I kept surviving, that was success. Entrepreneurs who survive long enough, sooner or later, are s</itunes:summary>

$70,000 feeds 5,000 families

A group of farmers in Ohio raised $70,000 and sent it to another group of farmers in Kenya. The project is part of the Foods Resource Bank, an organization that fights hunger by connecting churches here with groups in need around the world.

The Ohio farmers decided to send money, rather than food, so the farmers in Kenya could decide how to use it best. They spent the money to build a number of small dams and retention ponds to catch water in the rainy season so they would have water year-round. With that water, five thousand families have been delivered from hunger.

Everybody wins

Here’s an example of the impact made by just one project. The farmers in Ohio sent $3,000 to the farmers in Kenya, who hired an engineer. With the plan in hand, the Kenyan farmers built the dam with their own labor and materials.

Now their village has water – for themselves, for their cattle, and for growing crops. The women of the village used to walk about ten miles to get water. Now their time is being used much more productively.

With the water problem solved, the village switched its focus to better roads. These roads are the link to nearby markets where the farmers can sell their surplus produce. But they had deep ruts which made them nearly impassable.

It used to take two hours to get to the market by bike, which is the main form of transportation there. Bikes cost $6 to rent. With the improved roads, it only takes a half-an-hour now to get into town and bike rents have fallen to $3.

Talk about win / win! The farmers are paying 50% less to rent a bike. But the person who rents the bikes is making 100% more, because the bikes get returned so quickly. Everybody wins!

Farmer increases income over 400%

The article also highlights one Kenyan farmer. With the water nearby thanks to the dam, he was able to dig his own water retention pond, which he uses to irrigate his crops. His income has grown from less than $100 a year to $500 per year!

That’s an increase of over 400%!

Now he’s plowing his extra profits back into his business. He bought a generator and mechanical pump to double his cultivated land. He also planted 400 mango trees.

Entrepreneurship at its finest!

How it started

All of these wonderful things started with the vision of one man – the pastor in the village. Originally, he reached out for food from the large international agencies. But he feared that his people would become dependent.

So he formed a development group that created a list of needs – water was number one on the list. He sent that list to a number of organizations, including the Foods Resource Bank. They got the farmers in Ohio involved.

Takeaways

We found this story so inspiring because it shows that a small amount of money with a large amount of focus can accomplish bigg things.

We liked how farmers here supported farmers there. We can all use our passion, knowledge, and skills to help people like us in other parts of the world.

It also shows the resourcefulness of people. Get resources to people on the scene. They will find a way to overcome their biggest obstacles with their ingenuity and industriousness. The accomplishments can be phenomenal!

You, too, can make a difference. Donate money or make microloans to people in need with good ideas. Reach out to organizations that have the infrastructure in place to help people in need.

It only takes one person. Each of us can make a bigg difference in helping other people around the world be a bigg success.

Next time, we’ll talk with a man who left a high-paying job with a prestigious law firm to do his own thing. Until then, here’s to your bigg success!
