Albert Mehrabian, Professor Emeritus of Psychology at UCLA, is the author of Silent Messages. This book discusses his legendary research into the relative importance of verbal and non-verbal communication.

___

___

Mehrabian’s rule

When you’re trying to communicate emotions, think about the three V’s: verbal, vocal, and visual. They are the three parts of what has become known as Mehrabian’s Rule – 7% of your message is given verbally (the words you use), 38% comes vocally (the tone you use), and 55% is delivered visually (your facial expressions and body language).

We see from his research that, when we’re trying to convey feelings or attitudes, the overwhelming majority of the message comes through non-verbally. If the verbal and non-verbal don’t agree, people will rely on the non-verbal.

Choosing your medium

Therefore, understanding the three V’s of communication helps you prevent misunderstanding. If the recipient of your message can’t hear and see you say the words, your message may get diluted.

E-mail is convenient, but it can be easily misunderstood because it’s only words. What about text messages?

___

A friend of mine told me that her husband’s ex-wife texts her husband about problems with their kids. My friend gets frustrated after several rounds of nothing getting solved. She says she tells him to just call his ex-wife.

___

So choose your medium carefully if you’re trying to convey feelings or attitudes. Some media only use one part of the communication trio, and a very minor one at that!

If you’re just relaying facts, e-mail is fine. If you want to express more than that, your message may get diluted. A phone call enriches the conversation because you bring in the voice. And while it’s not always possible to meet face-to-face, it is your best bet for your most sensitive communication.

Speaking of which …

Let’s apply this to a presentation, whether your audience is one or many. How you say what you say, and what you do when you say it, are actually more important, in getting your message across, than what you say.

What?

It’s hard to explain this in just words. Hey, that illustrates our point!

You can say, “I’m excited.” If you say it with enthusiasm in your voice while standing straight up, your audience will believe you. If you say it like Droopy says, “I’m happy” and slouch while you’re saying it, your audience may doubt you.

People remember the impression more than the words. So if you want to connect with an audience, it’s important to practice your inflections and your gestures to make sure they’re congruent with your words.

People cutting you off in traffic, stealing your parking spot, talking on their cell phone while being checked out, leaving their garbage in stores, and even being physically aggressive on Black Friday!

___

___

Oprah recently did a show on rude behavior where she highlighted these statistics:

Eighty percent of Americans think rudeness is a serious national problem.

Yet ninety-nine percent say that they themselves are not rude.

So we can only conclude from these results that all of the rudeness must stem from one percent of all the people! Evidently, most of us think that almost everyone else is rude, but we’re not.

Test yourself

To see how you stack up, she provides a quiz. Here are a few of the questions:

Are you chronically late?

___

I would have to say n…yes. I want to say “no”, but there may be some people who would disagree with me! Too often I think I can squeeze in one more call or answer one more e-mail before heading off to that next appointment.

___

___

Oprah answered the same way. I know I need to work on this … I tend to be five minutes late to meetings.

___

Have you ever interrupted a face-to-face conversation to take a non-urgent cell phone call?

___

I can’t ever recall a time when I’ve done this. Hey, that means I got one right!

___

___

I’m good at ignoring the phone when I’m talking to someone face-to-face.

___

Have you gone through a supermarket 10-item express lane with more than 10 items?

___

Well, that depends on how you define the word “item”. If I have multiples of a single item that does only count as one, doesn’t it?

___

___

I’m guilty by association because I go to the store with you, George.

___

___

Oh thanks, Mary-Lynn, for blaming it all on me! That’s rude!

___

These questions made us think – things that we don’t necessarily think are rude may be perceived as rude by others.

___

I get annoyed with oblivious shoppers. When it’s December 24th and I’m starting to shop for Christmas, it’s just rude for people to wander around like they don’t have anything to do. They get in the way of us serious shoppers!

___

___

For me, it’s rude drivers – they don’t use their turn signal. They don’t get over when I’m trying to merge even though there’s plenty of room. Drivers who don’t pay attention are inconsiderate!

___

What rude behavior is a pet peeve for you?

3 rules of civil behavior

During her show, Oprah talked with Dr. P.M. Forni, author of Choosing Civility: The 25 Rules of Considerate Conduct.

He says our society is structured to encourage rudeness. We’re stressed, fatigued, and in environments with a lot of people we don’t know. For example, we may be one of hundreds of people in a store or traffic jam. His book points out three rules to behave more civilly:

Pay Attention
Without attention, no meaningful interaction is possible. When we relate to the world as if we were on automatic pilot, we can hardly be at our best in our encounters with our fellow human beings.

Acknowledge Others
Acknowledge others' existence, their importance to you, their feelings, and the things they do for you. A simple "Good morning" as you walk past a co-worker in the hallway is a perfect example.

Think The Best
When we approach others assuming that they are good, honest, and sensitive, we often encourage them to be just that. Yet from the results of this study, it appears that we assume the worst in others while thinking the best of ourselves. Sometimes it is dissatisfaction with ourselves that makes us judge others unfairly.

Finally, Dr. Forni also says being polite is a healthier way to live. Going through life behaving rudely can make you physically sick.

<itunes:summary>Does anything bring out rude behavior more than the holiday shopping season? People cutting you off in traffic, stealing your parking spot, talking on their cell phone while being checked out, leaving their garbage in stores, and even being physically aggressive on Black Friday! ___ ___ Oprah recently did a show on rude behavior where she highlighted these statistics: Eighty percent of Americans think rudeness is a serious national problem. Yet ninety-nine percent say that they themselves are not rude. So we can only conclude from these results that all of the rudeness must stem from one percent of all the people! Evidently, most of us think that almost everyone else is rude, but we#8217;re not. Test yourself To see how you stack up, she provides a quiz. Here are a few of the questions: Are you chronically late?#160; ___ I would have to say n...yes. I want to say #8220;no#8221;, but there may be some people who would disagree with me! Too often I think I can squeeze in one more call or answer one more e-mail before heading off to that next appointment. ___ ___ Oprah answered the same way. I know I need to work on this ... I tend to be five minutes late to meetings. ___ Have you ever interrupted a face-to-face conversation to take a non-urgent cell phone call? ___ I can#8217;t ever recall a time when I#8217;ve done this. Hey, that means I got one right! ___ ___ I#8217;m good at ignoring the phone when I#8217;m talking to someone face-to-face. ___ Have you gone through a supermarket 10-item express lane with more than 10 items? ___ Well, that depends on how you define the word #8220;item#8221;. If I have multiples of a single item that does only count as one, doesn#8217;t it? ___ ___ I#8217;m guilty by association because I go to the store with you, George. ___ ___ Oh thanks, Mary-Lynn, for blaming it all on me! That#8217;s rude! ___ These questions made us think #8211; things that we don#8217;t necessarily think are rude may be perceived as rude by others. ___ I get annoyed with oblivious shoppers. When it#8217;s December 24th and I#8217;m starting to shop for Christmas, it#8217;s just rude for people to wander around like they don#8217;t have anything to do. They get in the way of us serious shoppers! ___ ___ For me, it#8217;s rude drivers #8211; they don#8217;t use their turn signal. They don#8217;t get over when I#8217;m trying to merge even though there#8217;s plenty of room. Drivers who don#8217;t pay attention are inconsiderate! ___ What rude behavior is a pet peeve for you? 3 rules of civil behavior During her show, Oprah talked with Dr. P.M. Forni, author of Choosing Civility: The 25 Rules of Considerate Conduct. He says our society is structured to encourage rudeness. We#8217;re stressed, fatigued, and in environments with a lot of people we don#8217;t know. For example, we may be one of hundreds of people in a store or traffic jam. His book points out three rules to behave more civilly: Pay Attention Without attention, no meaningful interaction is possible. When we relate to the world as if we were on automatic pilot, we can hardly be at our best in our encounters with our fellow human beings. Acknowledge Others Acknowledge others#39; existence, their importance to you, their feelings, and the things they do for you. A simple #34;Good morning#34; as you walk past a co-worker in the hallway is a perfect example. Think The Best When we approach others assuming that they are good, honest, and sensitive, we often encourage them to be just that. Yet from the results of this study, it appears that we assume the worst in others while thinking the best of ourselves. Sometimes it is dissatisfaction with ourselves that makes us judge others unfairly. Finally, Dr. Forni also says being polite is a healthier way to live. Going through life behaving rudely can make you physically sick.#160; ___ Get the tips and tools you need to be a BIGG success! Subscribe to the Bigg Succ</itunes:summary>
