People who reach bigg success aren’t constrained by the same forces we are.

Baloney!

It’s a myth that we all aren’t constrained in the same ways. But there’s a bigg difference between the average Joe or Jane and people who ultimately reach bigg success.

___

___

Remove the constraints!

The average person gives in to those constraints. Bigg goal-getters don’t see themselves as constrained so they don’t allow themselves to be constrained.

They don’t waste time telling themselves all of the reasons why they can’t do something. They focus, instead, on why they can do it and how they will get it done.

There’s a key lesson for us: By changing your focus – from “can’t” to “can” – you open your mind to all sorts of possibilities.

Your mind follows your lead

Your mind will let you take it wherever you want. Think about why something can’t be done and your mind will come up with all kinds of reasons to prove you right!

Think about how it can be done and your mind will start figuring out any number of ways to overcome every challenge that holds others back.

Sure, some ideas won’t work out. You won’t care. You know one of them will lead you to bigg success.

But if you never get out of the gate – if you just assume that you can’t win the race – you won’t.

The first part of the killer combo: Child-like imagination
People who reach bigg success dream bigg. You must dream again. You must dream the kind of dreams you dreamed when you were young.

Your dreams probably won’t be exactly the same as they were then. But they will be as bigg as the dreams you saw through the eyes of a child.

When the world was your oyster.
When there was nothing you couldn’t do.
When you could imagine all of the bigg things that you would accomplish.
When you knew that nothing could stop you.
When you couldn’t wait to grow up so we could get to all these wonderful ideas.

The second part: Experiential wisdom
But you’re not a child anymore and that’s good. You’re better equipped now to achieve your bigg dreams than you were then.

Combine that child-like imagination with the wisdom you have gained from your experiences. Together, they will help you achieve things that other people only fantasize about, if they allow themselves to think about them at all.

That’s the difference. That’s why you should celebrate your age. You have gained an asset that you didn’t have when you were young.

You have learned from your experiences, haven’t you?

Celebrate them! Take joy in all of them – the good, the bad and the ugly!

You have the killer combination to achieve bigg success! Because of it, the possibility of achieving the impossible is more probable!

Believe

But too much of the time, we don’t think about that. We stopped dreaming bigg dreams. We accepted being average and ordinary.

Deep in your soul, you know that you’re excellent and extraordinary. You have to believe again!

Believe that you can achieve what you can conceive! Then find a way to do it.

It only takes one person discovering one way to do anything that’s never been done before. Then people marvel at the accomplishment.

You’re still the one!

You are that one person! You were born to dream bigg dreams. You know it because you’ve done it. You were born to be excellent and extraordinary.

But first you must remove the limits that keep you from dreaming bigg. Dream.

Then think of ways to make your dream your reality.

Believe that you will win. Did you hear that? You will win. You will achieve your dream. You’re still the one!

Now, take action and you’ll be a bigg success!

___

___

Terms can inspire action

Our definition of bigg success – life on your own terms – explicitly recognizes that “terms” are important. Not just words, but words that matter. Words that empower us.

A single term can cut through the complexity of a subject and make it simple to understand. And therein lies the power of terms.

To create understanding and, from that understanding, actions to achieve bigg success.

Life on your own terms. What are those terms for you?

___

One of the terms we use here at Bigg Success is goal-getter. I love that word. It combines go-getter with goal-getting. So it’s a powerful word to me that implies movement toward what I want to achieve.

___

Terms can limit us

Like many things, terms can also work against us. They can limit what we achieve.

We can define ourselves too small. We can view our businesses too tightly. We may see our careers too narrowly.

___

For example, I defined myself for years as a radio DJ. That’s what I was and that’s what I was known as. But when I started using the term “broadcaster”, I could see a bigger picture and new possibilities. I am now a “broadcaster” who happens to use the internet as my medium.

___

With terms, we can also magnify our shortcomings and minimize our strengths. It’s so easy to do.

Your terms are unique

Notice that we define bigg success as life on your own terms.

Your terms are not my terms. They are uniquely yours.

Your terms have the power to inspire you to bigg success.

To lift you up when you’re down.

To push you even higher when you’re up.

Terms as time frames

There’s another meaning to the “terms” of life on your own terms. We think of school terms – a semester, for instance.

It’s valuable to think about “terms” in terms of time. In other words, as phases. To achieve the bigg success we dream of, we will set our goals in time frames.

For example, say you want to be the best attorney in your area. That’s your end goal.

In the first term, your goal may be to complete your undergraduate degree.

Term 2 – get your law degree. Term 3 – pass the bar. And so on.

You break up your long-term goal into terms – time frames – to make sure you stay on track to reach bigg success.

___

Would you like more tips and tools to live your life on your own terms?
Subscribe to the Bigg Success Weekly – it’s FREE!

___

The terms of the deal

See how rich a single term can be? But we’re not through yet!

There are two primary factors in any deal – the price and the terms. There’s a basic negotiating principle:

You get to pick the price or the terms, but not both.

If you ever get to pick both, you better get a great deal!

Do you see the implication of that principle to bigg success? If you set the terms, bigg success sets the price.

The higher the level of success you seek, the higher the price will be. You must be willing to pay that price or you can’t – you won’t – be able to live your life on your own terms.

There’s a story about an amateur golfer who approached a famous golfer. We believe it was Tom Watson. The story goes something like this …

The amateur said, “I’d give anything to drive a golf ball the way you do.”

Tom Watson said, “No, you wouldn’t.”

The amateur said, “Yes, I would.”

After several more rounds of this, the pro decided to let the amateur in on his secret.

Tom Watson finally said, “I learned to drive the ball the way I do by going to the range every morning and driving a bucket of balls. When that bucket was empty, I drove another one. And another one.”

The pro continued, “I drove balls until I could feel blisters forming on my hands. And do you know what I did then? I kept driving balls. Before long, my hands were bleeding. So I drove another bucket of balls. Day after day, week after week, I drove balls in spite of the pain. Eventually, my hands were full of callouses. That’s how I learned to drive the golf ball the way I do.”

So if you want to drive golf balls like a pro, there’s your price. You set the terms, but then you must pay the price to reach bigg success.

It’s worth it because it’s what you want. By the way, there is also a price to pay for not living your life on your own terms. We think that price is higher!

<itunes:summary>Last time, we discussed a new paradigm for thinking about our lives: you are the entrepreneur in charge of running a very important enterprise #8211; your life. ___ ___ Terms can inspire action Our definition of bigg success #8211; life on your own terms #8211; explicitly recognizes that #8220;terms#8221; are important. Not just words, but words that matter. Words that empower us. A single term can cut through the complexity of a subject and make it simple to understand. And therein lies the power of terms. To create understanding and, from that understanding, actions to achieve bigg success. Life on your own terms. What are those terms for you? ___ One of the terms we use here at Bigg Success is goal-getter. I love that word. It combines go-getter with goal-getting. So it#8217;s a powerful word to me that implies movement toward what I want to achieve. ___ Terms can limit us Like many things, terms can also work against us. They can limit what we achieve. We can define ourselves too small. We can view our businesses too tightly. We may see our careers too narrowly. ___ For example, I defined myself for years as a radio DJ. That#8217;s what I was and that#8217;s what I was known as. But when I started using the term #8220;broadcaster#8221;, I could see a bigger picture and new possibilities. I am now a #8220;broadcaster#8221; who happens to use the internet as my medium. ___ With terms, we can also magnify our shortcomings and minimize our strengths. It#8217;s so easy to do. Your terms are unique Notice that we define bigg success as life on your own terms. Your terms are not my terms. They are uniquely yours. Your terms have the power to inspire you to bigg success. To lift you up when you#8217;re down. To push you even higher when you#8217;re up. Terms as time frames There#8217;s another meaning to the #8220;terms#8221; of life on your own terms. We think of school terms #8211; a semester, for instance. It#8217;s valuable to think about #8220;terms#8221; in terms of time. In other words, as phases. To achieve the bigg success we dream of, we will set our goals in time frames. For example, say you want to be the best attorney in your area. That#8217;s your end goal. In the first term, your goal may be to complete your undergraduate degree. Term 2 #8211; get your law degree. Term 3 #8211; pass the bar. And so on. You break up your long-term goal into terms #8211; time frames #8211; to make sure you stay on track to reach bigg success.#160; ___ Would you like more tips and tools to live your life on your own terms? Subscribe to the Bigg Success Weekly #8211; it#8217;s FREE! ___ The terms of the deal See how rich a single term can be? But we#8217;re not through yet! There are two primary factors in any deal #8211; the price and the terms. There#8217;s a basic negotiating principle: You get to pick the price or the terms, but not both. If you ever get to pick both, you better get a great deal! Do you see the implication of that principle to bigg success? If you set the terms, bigg success sets the price. The higher the level of success you seek, the higher the price will be. You must be willing to pay that price or you can#8217;t #8211; you won#8217;t #8211; be able to live your life on your own terms. There#8217;s a story about an amateur golfer who approached a famous golfer. We believe it was Tom Watson. The story goes something like this ... The amateur said, #8220;I#8217;d give anything to drive a golf ball the way you do.#8221; Tom Watson said, #8220;No, you wouldn#8217;t.#8221; The amateur said, #8220;Yes, I would.#8221; After several more rounds of this, the pro decided to let the amateur in on his secret. Tom Watson finally said, #8220;I learned to drive the ball the way I do by going to the range every morning and driving a bucket of balls. When that bucket was empty, I drove another one. And another one.#8221; The pro continued, #8220;I</itunes:summary>

So far we’ve discussed:

Part I: what a tribe is, what the leader does, and why quality trumps quantity

Part II: why Seth became a leader, the power of one, and the importance of leverage

Today we wrap up our conversation. Let’s get to it!

___

___

Change and chaos creates opportunity

___

Seth, one of the constants we see in your new book is change. I teach Entrepreneurial Finance at our local university. One of the things we talk about is that entrepreneurship is the science of change. There’s a quote in your new book that I just love, “The rush from stability is a huge opportunity for you.” Change does create opportunity for all of us, especially small business people.

___

___

We can look back, before the Industrial Revolution, to when there was a king so the politics never changed. There was a farm and a craftsman so technology and markets never changed. It was almost impossible to cause your station in life to adjust in your lifetime. When someone would come along, like Josiah Wedgwood, and go from being an itinerant potter to a multi-millionaire, that was a once in a lifetime experience per country. Now it happens weekly. Now we’re seeing that all of the change and chaos creates opportunity. There’s no doubt in my mind that we’re going to see newly minted millionaires all over the world because of this chaos. We’re going to see newly influential musicians because of the meltdown of the music industry. If the music industry had stayed the way it was, the only way that you were going to become popular was by running into Neil Young’s A&R guy and hope he liked you. Now someone like Jen Chapin can come along, become popular, and have a following just because she deserves it, not because of someone she knows.

___

You know it don’t come easy

___

It’s very empowering. When the status quo doesn’t work anymore, it forces you to be innovative. Innovation is exciting and that creates that passion that you talk about that creates that tribe that wants to follow you and talk about you.

___

___

That’s it, but I’m nervous about one thing. We may be fooling people into thinking that this is easy. Just because it’s happening a lot, just because it’s powerful, doesn’t mean it’s easy. Most people who want to make change are fine with that. They’re fine with the fact that’s it going to take time, effort, dedication and risk in order to make this stuff happen. They just want to know it’s possible. And it is possible if you’re willing to do the work. My blog was not popular for years and years and years. As an entrepreneur, I have failed literally dozens of times before I had success. But I knew it was possible. Once I knew it was possible, then it was worth all the effort.

___

How Seth picked himself up from failure

___

See now that’s interesting because you talk about how it failed. How did you pick yourself up from that and not give up?

___

___

I think there are a couple of ways. One is to remind yourself how horrible it is to be a bank teller.

___

___

Now wait a minute, there are some bank tellers out there who enjoy what they do.

___

___

I think that’s true. But most of them don’t want to be entrepreneurs. If you want to be an entrepreneur – if you want to run your own decision base – then the thought of the alternative helps you focus. But the other thing is, my friend Zig Ziglar has this phrase which is, if he’s only going to succeed one out of ten times, that means every “No” gets him one “No” closer to nine. Nine “No’s” is great because the tenth one is going to be a “Yes.” I felt like, as long as I kept surviving, that was success. Entrepreneurs who survive long enough, sooner or later, are successful.

___

___

But also, read The Dip, so you know whether to get out, right?

___

___

What The Dip would say is you should abandon tactics all the time. A tactic that’s a dead end, that isn’t working and that isn’t helping you be the best in the world, should be abandoned. I would include in that a career choice – like sticking with a particular radio station. That’s a tactic. But a strategy – a strategy that says I’m going to be a successful solo entrepreneur or I am going to make it as a musician – isn’t so easily abandoned. That’s what keeps you pushing through the dip.

___

Please stand up

___

Before we let you go, we have to ask about one more thing. Toward the end of Tribes, you talk about how some people are going to rip on you about the style of this book and the way you’ve written it. George and I absolutely loved it. It’s such an easy read; it flows so nicely. What’s the problem with it?

___

___

First of all, thank you. That was very nice. The problem with it is I don’t tell you what to do tomorrow. I don’t say, “If you’re a dummy, here are the twelve steps.” I don’t give you a checklist. I don’t give you a list of tactics or tools or copy you can lift and use as your own. Part of the essence of being a leader is that you’re going to have to lead differently than the guy before you. Part of the essence of being a leader is that every tribe demands its own style of leader. No one else can do that. You have to figure it out. That’s frustrating for some people.

___

___

That’s interesting, Seth, because with my class, I purposefully leave it a little more unstructured than the students would like. The reason I do that is because then they put that structure in place. By doing that, they learn how to be an entrepreneur. It’s helpful I think. With your book, you read it and create those checklists yourself.

___

___

I think that’s a great way to look at it. This summer, I had some interns. The way that I ran the application process is that I invited the 160 people who applied to join a Facebook group. Then I didn’t tell them what to do; I just watched. It was really interesting because, of the 160, twenty immediately took charge – planning activities, posting interesting notes, and starting conversations. The remaining 140 waited to be told what to do. And I imagine you can guess who I considered hiring.

___

___

The leaders stood up and stood out.

___

Thanks so much Seth! It was fantastic talking with you. We wish you bigg success with this great book.

Seth is also the founder of Squidoo, where you can find a special page about Tribes.
It’s an amazing discussion of the power of failure and imagination. It’s definitely worth your time to read the full text, or watch the video. She said,

“We do not need magic to change the world, we carry all the power we
need inside ourselves already: we have the power to imagine better.”

Each of us has the power within us to change the world. Do you doubt it?

Steve Jobs didn’t doubt it.
He imagined a world where every person could have the same computing power that only large organizations had at that point. He dreamed of a world where computers were so user-friendly everybody could use them.

John F. Kennedy didn’t doubt it.
He had the vision that man could walk on the moon. He set forth his vision with the power of words to direct an entire country’s resources toward that mission. A short time later, Neil Armstrong uttered his famous words, “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

Martin Luther King didn’t doubt it.
He had a dream that people would be judged solely by the contributions they made to society, not by the color of their skin. His dream led to a movement to bring equal opportunity to all.

You may say that you don’t have …

… the imagination of JK Rowling. To create a world that can inspire millions of young people to read again at a time when everyone thought that only video games could attract them.

… the creativity of Steve Jobs. To see the possibilities for individuals to have access to technology at their fingertips.

… the vision of John F. Kennedy. To see the impossible as possible and to inspire an entire nation to get behind the effort.

… the oratory skills of Martin Luther King. To put the need for change front and center on the agenda of his country and to move people to effect that change.

The unique power within you.
You do have the power to imagine a better world and make a difference in your own life and the life of others. Your imagination flows from your unique genetic make-up and your personal experiences.

No one else – who has ever walked on this earth, is here now, or ever will be – can duplicate what you have and who you are. You are one of a kind!

It’s up to you to live up to the potential that is within you … just imagine! How will you leave the world a better place? What are you doing now to make a difference in the lives of others?
