It’s Back-to-School time and we’re in the middle of a ten-part series on lifelong learning. We’ve talked about the 3 R’s we learned in school and how they apply to our lives now.

Last time, we started the 3 R’s of bigg success by talking about the 1st R – responsibility. Now we want to talk about the 2nd R – resiliency.

___

___

We always knew how important it was to be resilient. However, the events of the past year or so have highlighted why it’s vital that we are able to bounce back.

One of the things we know for sure is that there will be surprises on the path to bigg success. That’s when you have to dig deep to find your ability to press on.

The difference between a promise and a commitment

___

I’m admittedly going back a few years here. I remember a banquet from high school. Our football team had a very successful year. The quote behind the dais said, “Losers make promises, Winners make commitments.” There’s a fine line between those two terms.

___

___

Promises are a declaration of what you will do. We’re told to keep our promises. Of course, we should. But that quote, George, highlights how you keep promises. You make a commitment to make them so.

___

When you do that, you have an emotional stake in the promise. You’re not just saying it. You will do it one way or another.

That’s the bigg goal-getters mindset. That’s the mindset of people who will reach bigg success in times like the ones we’re living through.

5 ways to become more resilient

Change is occurring at a rate we’ve never seen before. One of the things that we can count on in the future is that things will keep changing.

Resiliency is a critical trait for bigg success. Here are five ways to become more resilient:

Develop a will do attitude.

We used to say “can do” but the term “can” isn’t strong enough. Try this: Say “I can succeed bigg.” Now try it this way: “I will succeed bigg!” Do you see the difference? A will-do mindset empowers you. Believe in yourself completely.

Become flexible.

Rigidity isn’t one of the 3 R’s of bigg success! It works against bigg success these days. Things change quickly, which makes the future difficult to predict. Learn and adapt. It’s critical to bigg success.

Develop a problem-solving process.

Check out our post called SOLVE IT where we map out such a system. And take a note from the Chinese: Put all your problems in a box and pull them out one at a time when you’re ready to deal with them.

Summon strength.

Different people do this in different ways. Your strength may come from inside yourself. It may come from meditation or prayer. It may come from people who care about you. It may come from a combination of all of these. It doesn’t matter where you get it, but find mental, emotional and spiritual strength.

Focus.

Focus on what you can control, not what you can’t. Focus on who you can influence, not who you can’t. Focus on the most important thing you for you to accomplish next for your bigg success.

___

Don’t miss the party! Trust Agents is flying off the shelves.

Bigg success is life on your own terms. There are five elements of bigg success – money, time, growth, work and play. Today we want to focus on time with growth factoring in throughout.

It’s important to look at how you spend your time to determine how to save time. One question to look at is how much time you spend putting out fires.

___

___

Pause and reflect

Certain jobs seem to require more reaction than others. The closer you are to the customer, the more you may respond reactively. If your direct charges are on the front line, you may spend more time reacting.

In those cases, you need to allow for more reactive time as you plan out your day. However, bigg goal-getters try to minimize the amount of time they spend reacting.

So if a large portion of your day is spent responding to situations, pause and reflect. Ask yourself what you can do about it.

It’s possible that nothing can be done about it, but in many cases there is more in your control than you might think. It’s about moving from a reactive mode to a proactive mindset.

That’s the higher order of personal leadership. As a bigg goal-getter, you want more in your tool kit than just problem-solving capabilities. You also want to be a problem dissolver. Here are three ways to do that:

Elimination

The best way to dissolve a problem is to never have it in the first place. Look ahead and try to discover potential problems. If you think it’s likely that you will encounter that problem, dissolve it by eliminating it in advance.

Many future problems can be handled this way. For example, leaders who establish clear expectations for their people eliminate many problems before they ever happen.

Preparation

The next best way to dissolve a problem is to have an answer in mind before you need it. You may have thought about these problems upfront, but it’s more effective to prepare for its eventuality than to eliminate it in advance.

A great example of this is contingency plans. You have a path you’re going down and you’ve determined in advance it’s your best path. However, as new evidence becomes available, you realize that you need to adjust. Planning that adjustment in advance helps you respond quickly if the time comes.

Prevention

Some problems just can’t be anticipated in advance. However, bigg goal-getters dissolve them by solving the problem now and preventing it from reoccurring in the future.

We have a tendency to rush to solve a problem, but oftentimes, with just a little more effort, we can keep it from happening again. Take time to figure out why it happened. Reverse engineer your process to see if you can prevent it in the future.

As the saying goes, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” The best time to start prevention is right after you’ve found the cure. You’re motivated then!

Use that motivation to your advantage to shift your thinking away from solving problems to dissolving them. It leads to bigg success!

___

<itunes:summary>Bigg success is life on your own terms. There are five elements of bigg success #8211; money, time, growth, work and play. Today we want to focus on time with growth factoring in throughout. It#8217;s important to look at how you spend your time to determine how to save time. One question to look at is how much time you spend putting out fires. ___ ___ Pause and reflect Certain jobs seem to require more reaction than others.
People often get overwhelmed by all of the problems they face. They just don’t know where to start. To help with that, we recently discussed an ancient Chinese secret for solving all of your problems. It’s a simple two-step process:

Put all of your problems away into their own individual compartments.

Pull one problem out at a time when you’re ready to deal with it.

It makes things more manageable when you’re not looking at all of your problems all at once. But many people don’t know what to do once they pull the problem out. It’s a timeless process, but we’ve put our own spin on it to make it easier to remember.

SOLVE IT: The 7-step problem-solving process

Step 1 – Statement
State exactly what the problem is. Until you’ve defined your problem clearly, you can’t solve it!

Step 2 – Origin
Isolate the root cause of the problem. A lot of times, we stop at the symptoms of the problem. You have to find its point of origin or you won’t solve it!

Step 3 – List
Brainstorm for possible solutions. BRAINSTORM, don’t analyze. Get all of your ideas on paper so you can solve it!

Step 4 – Verify
Determine the pros and cons of each solution. You won’t know what’s best until you analyze it. Then you can solve it!

Step 5 – Eliminate
Get rid of all but the single best solution. You’ve done the research. Now go with what you believe is the best option so you can solve it!

Step 6 – Implement
Work your solution to make your solution work. You have to take action to solve it!

Step 7 – Test
You’ve established benchmarks so you know whether or not your solution is working. Check periodically against these benchmarks. Keep an eye on the problem to make sure that you solve it!

So the next time you have a problem – SOLVE IT! Isn’t that simple?

Today we’ll share a timeless principle for solving all of your problems that’s amazingly simple. But first, let’s discuss three ways that DON’T solve problems.

Ignore it and hope it will go away.
Some people get overwhelmed by an abundance of problems. They don’t know where to begin solving them so they just don’t begin solving them.

Result: The problems usually just get bigger and bigger.

Use a knee-jerk reaction.
Other people just jump to a solution. They don’t aim; they just fire. It may or may not be the right solution, but it doesn’t matter – they’ve got it off their plate.

Result: They may end up with a bigger, more complex problem down-the-road.

Approach it willy-nilly.
Still other people have no problem-solving process. They try a little of this and little of that. They don’t have any order so they don’t approach their most pressing problems in an orderly way.

Result: The problems just keep piling up.

Noble endeavors
James Clavell wrote a great novel called Noble House. It inspired a mini-series in which Pierce Brosnan played the CEO of Struan’s. Struan’s was the Noble House, the most prestigious trading firm in Hong Kong.

He inherited a number of problems from his predecessor. Now, he has a severe shortage of cash. He’s overextended with his bank. His stock price is falling rapidly. He faces a raid on his company by an American businessman, who has inside information. His Hong Kong rival is trying to bury him. The founder of Struan’s had made a promise to the locals that he must fulfill.

His world is crashing in around him! It seems that everybody wants something from him. Yet few are willing to give him any help.

In the end, he managed to overcome all the odds and Struan’s remained the Noble House. How did he do it?

By looking at his problems the Chinese way. It’s a simple, two-step process to solve all of your problems:

Put all of your problems into their individual compartments.

Picture yourself at your bank. You’re in the safe deposit area. You see box after box after box.

Take each problem and put it in its own box. You may group similar problems together, but each one should have its very own box. That will be very important for the second step.

Put them away to de-clutter your mind. Because if you try to solve all of them, you end up solving none of them. So this first step is very important!

Not to mention, there are new problems surfacing all the time. Just keep putting them away so you’re ready for the second step.

Pull one problem out at a time when, and only when, you’re ready and able to deal with it.

Sounds simple, doesn’t it? But how do you determine what problem to pull out? It’s a matter of timing – do you have the resources available? Do you have the time, the money, and any other required resources? If not, keep it tucked away.

So when you open up the compartment, do you keep it open until it’s completely solved? Not necessarily! You may pull it out, do as much as you can and then put it back and pull out another one. Keep repeating until all your problems are solved!

A lot of people never look at their problems this way. There’s a real calming effect when you do, because you don’t have all of your problems staring at you all at once!

Just click the “Share This” button below to pass this ancient problem-solving secret on to a friend. You’ll be a hit if you do!
But Shhhh … it’s still a secret!

Next week, we’ll expand on this subject by sharing a problem-solving process we call SOLVE IT.

For our bigg quote today, we thought it only appropriate to consult with Confucius, who said,

“Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.”

Even when complications arise, keep it simple and SOLVE IT!

Next time, we’ll offer some advice that’s not for the faint-of-heart. Consider yourself warned! We’ll discuss a common perception that keeps many people from succeeding bigg! Until then, here’s to your bigg success!

Noble endeavorsJames Clavell wrote a great novel called Noble House. It inspired a mini-series in which Pierce Brosnan played the CEO of Struan#8217;s. Struan#8217;s was the Noble House, the most prestigious trading firm in Hong Kong. He inherited a number of problems from his predecessor. Now, he has a severe shortage of cash. He#8217;s overextended with his bank. His stock price is falling rapidly. He faces a raid on his company by an American businessman, who has inside information. His Hong Kong rival is trying to bury him. The founder of Struan#8217;s had made a promise to the locals that he must fulfill. His world is crashing in around him! It seems that everybody wants something from him. Yet few are willing to give him any help.In the end, he managed to overcome all the odds and Struan#8217;s remained the Noble House. How did he do it?By looking at his problems the Chinese way. It#8217;s a simple, two-step process to solve all of your problems:Put all of your problems into their individual compartments.Picture yourself at your bank. You#8217;re in the safe deposit area. You see box after box after box.Take each problem and put it in its own box. You may group similar problems together, but each one should have its very own box. That will be very important for the second step.Put them away to de-clutter your mind. Because if you try to solve all of them, you end up solving none of them. So this first step is very important! Not to mention, there are new problems surfacing all the time. Just keep putting them away so you#8217;re ready for the second step. Pull one problem out at a time when, and only when, you#8217;re ready and able to deal with it.Sounds simple, doesn#8217;t it? But how do you determine what problem to pull out? It#8217;s a matter of timing #8211; do you have the resources available? Do you have the time, the money, and any other required resources? If not, keep it tucked away.So when you open up the compartment, do you keep it open until it#8217;s completely solved? Not necessarily! You may pull it out, do as much as you can and then put it back and pull out another one. Keep repeating until all your problems are solved!A lot of people never look at their problems this way. There#8217;s a real calming effect when you do, because you don#8217;t have all of your problems staring at you all at once! Next week, we#8217;ll expand on this subject by sharing a problem-solving process we call SOLVE IT.For our bigg quote today, we thought it only appropriate to consult with Confucius, who said,#8220;Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.#8221;Even when complications arise, keep it simple and SOLVE IT!Next time, we#8217;ll offer some advice that#8217;s not for the faint-of-heart.
