Here we go…

“People who are sensible about love are incapable of it.” ~ Douglas Yates

“There is no remedy for love but to love more.” ~ Henry David Thoreau

“To love and win is the best thing. To love and lose, the next best.” ~ William M. Thackeray

“When one door closes another door opens; but we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us.” ~ Alexander Graham Bell

“John Lennon said, ‘All you need is love.’ John obviously never met my bank manager.” ~ Danny McCrossan

“Love at first sight is possible, but it pays to take a second look.” ~ Author Unknown

“Love is not blind – it sees more, not less. But because it sees more, it is willing to see less.” ~ Julins Gordon

“To find someone who will love you for no reason, and to shower that person with reasons, that is the ultimate happiness.” ~ Robert Brault

“We waste time looking for the perfect lover, instead of creating the perfect love.” ~ Tom Robbins

“Love never dies a natural death. It dies because we don’t know how to replenish its source. It dies of blindness and errors and betrayals. It dies of illness and wounds; it dies of weariness, of withering, of tarnishing.” ~ Anais Nin

“Men are from Earth. Women are from Earth. Deal with it.” ~ George Carlin

“Life has taught us that love does not consist in gazing at each other but in looking outward together in the same direction.” ~ Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

“It is not how much we do, but how much love we put in the doing. It is not how much we give, but how much love we put in the giving.” ~ Mother Teresa

“Forget love, I’d rather fall in chocolate.” ~ Sandra J. Dykes

Yesterday, “life’s change agent” called Steve Jobs to a meeting.

That’s how he described death in his commencement address to Stanford graduates in 2005.

His point, in his own words:
“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma, which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice, heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”

We didn’t know Steve Jobs personally. Yet he personally affected us. Such is the nature of real entrepreneurs.

They impact the lives of hundreds, or thousands, or even millions of people. Not as an individual, but through their business.

Steve Jobs was the epitome of an entrepreneur. Not just in business, but in his attitude about life.

You see that in one of our favorite quotes by the man we’ll never forget:
“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do….”

Here’s to you Steve Jobs! You will be missed!

Mike Massimino, aka Astro_Mike, one of the astronauts on a mission to the Hubble Space Telescope, sent the social media world abuzz and made history with the first tweet from outer space.

___

___

Hundreds of thousands of people were part of the conversation through the power of technology. Isn’t it cool that distance is no longer a barrier to communication?

This tweet came just days after the new Star Trek movie hit the theaters. So we decided to look there for examples of out of this world communication.

Miss(ed) communication

___

Before we get into quotes from Star Trek, I’ve heard from several female friends that a guy on a first date should never say, “My hero is Captain James Kirk.”

___

___

And don’t to a Trekkie convention for your first date either! That’s not very romantic.

___

___

I think it highlights that, whether in romance or not, when you’re communicating with someone for the first time, it’s good to listen. It’s not all about you.

___

___

Try to discover your mutual interests instead of just talking about yourself. Of course, if you do happen to be talking with a bigg fan of Star Trek, then “engage” as Captain Jean-Luc Picard would say.

___

___

The Next Generation was my favorite of the series. I loved Picard’s leadership style and the dynamic he had with the crew, particularly #1, Commander Will T. Riker.

___

“Make it so” to move to action

Another famous Picard saying. The crew would discuss the issue at hand. Picard was great at listening to the input of his team. Finally, he would say “make it so” and the discussion would end.

As the leader, you reach a point where you have to make a decision and communicate it so you and your team can get on with implementing it.

“I concur” to shorten meetings

From the Where Silence has Lease episode, Picard gives a command to abort autodestruct. The computer asks Riker if he concurs. Riker responds, “Yes, absolutely, I do indeed concur wholeheartedly!” Picard responds that a “simple ‘yes’ would have sufficed.”

This made us think of meetings. One person says something. The next person agrees with what was just said. However, they repeat everything – perhaps in different words. Nothing is added to the conversation.

It’s an important communication because it shows that there is a consensus. But instead of going on and on about the same thing, ask your team to simply say “I concur”.

Even a simple “yes” will suffice! You’ll find your meetings will be much more productive.

“Never lose you. Never.”

This quote is from The Naked Time, an episode in the original series, Captain Kirk utters these words in a room by himself.

While we may be stretching his meaning here a bit, it made us think about the most important communication of all: self-communication. You have to find a way within yourself to stay true to yourself and encourage yourself so you can keep pushing on.

All motivation is self-motivation.

Oh, but don’t forget one important rule about this one – don’t do it out loud if there are people around!

The new movie

We liked Christopher Pike’s line to Kirk:

“You've always had a hard time finding your place in this world, haven't you? Never knowing your true worth. You can settle for less in ordinary life, or do you feel like you were meant for something better? Something special."

We have a friend who says, “Do you want me to tell you what you want to hear or what you need to hear? Because I’m happy to do this either way.”

It’s not always easy to listen to what we need to hear. However, sometimes the best communication isn’t what we want to hear.

This quote from Star Trek also emphasizes that – when criticism is required – we should be constructive and move as quickly as we can to encouragement. Veer to the positive so you build up the person with whom you’re talking.

We couldn’t leave out the tribbles!

One of the most famous Star Trek episodes is The Trouble with Tribbles from the original series. Scotty explains how he finally got rid of the little creatures:

“Just before they went into warp, I beamed the whole kit and kaboodle into their engine room, where they'll be no tribble at all."

Nobody knows the tribble we’ve seen!

It’s good to inject humor into almost any conversation. Word plays are often a great source of humor. See how many ways you can use the same word or phrase to keep the laughs going!

Communication brings us, and keeps us, together. Improving communication skills is a key to being a bigg success in any world. Live long and prosper!

The crew would discuss the issue at hand. Picard was great at listening to the input of his team. Finally, he would say #8220;make it so#8221; and the discussion would end. As the leader, you reach a point where you have to make a decision and communicate it so you and your team can get on with implementing it. #8220;I concur#8221; to shorten meetings From the Where Silence has Lease episode, Picard gives a command to abort autodestruct. The computer asks Riker if he concurs. Riker responds, #8220;Yes, absolutely, I do indeed concur wholeheartedly!#8221; Picard responds that a #8220;simple #8216;yes#8217; would have sufficed.#8221; This made us think of meetings. One person says something. The next person agrees with what was just said. However, they repeat everything #8211; perhaps in different words. Nothing is added to the conversation. It#8217;s an important communication because it shows that there is a consensus. But instead of going on and on about the same thing, ask your team to simply say #8220;I concur#8221;. Even a simple #8220;yes#8221; will suffice! You#8217;ll find your meetings will be much more productive. #8220;Never lose you. Never.#8221; This quote is from The Naked Time, an episode in the original series, Captain Kirk utters these words in a room by himself. While we may be stretching his meaning here a bit, it made us think about the most important communication of all: self-communication. You have to find a way within yourself to stay true to yourself and encourage yourself so you can keep pushing on. All motivation is self-motivation. Oh, but don#8217;t forget one important rule about this one #8211; don#8217;t do it out loud if there are people around! The new movie We liked Christopher Pike#8217;s line to Kirk: #8220;You#39;ve always had a hard time finding your place in this world, haven#39;t you? Never knowing your true worth. You can settle for less in ordinary life, or do you feel like you were meant for something better? Something special.#34; We have a friend who says, #8220;Do you want me to tell you what you want to hear or what you need to hear? Because I#8217;m happy to do this either way.#8221; It#8217;s not always easy to listen to what we need to hear. However, sometimes the best communication isn#8217;t what we want to hear. This quote from Star Trek also emph</itunes:summary>

Welch, host of the popular Career Opportunities, podcast. Last time, we discussed why Douglas has declared 2009 the “Year of the Leader.” Let’s get back to the conversation …

___

___

___

One of the challenges we face is getting started. You’ve talked about inertia – we tend to remain inanimate unless we really push ourselves. One of your quotes that I love is that we need “leadership over laissez-faire.”

___

___

There’s the old phrase that the only person who likes change is a wet baby. I see that every single day. It is so important. Newton had it right – objects at rest tend to remain at rest; objects in motion tend to remain in motion. I find that if I can get someone in motion, making the smallest step, the next step becomes all the easier. There is something about momentum and forward movement that builds on itself. Unfortunately, inertia builds on itself too. We can become really sedentary in our lives in a variety of ways – both physically and mentally. That’s part of the reason I write the column. Sometimes when I write, I picture myself giving that stone just a little bit of a push downhill. If I can get it to roll a quarter of a rotation, maybe it will start to roll a little bit further. That’s something we need to do in our own life and also cultivate in others.

___

___

Leaders are admired for their ability to keep pushing, taking all the steps necessary to keep progressing toward goals. Does your knowledge in this area stem from a time when you didn’t push yourself enough?

___

___

I have to admit that I face this problem every day. I think we all do. There are days when we just want to sit down and do nothing. We just want the world to go spinning around us and not have to worry about whether we have groceries in the house or if that check has come in from that client. It just gets a little overwhelming to us. I grew up in a very small town – a rural town – in Ohio of about 2,000 people. Frankly, in a town that small, there’s a lot of inertia. There’s not a lot of push to go on. I found out very early, though, that I get bored very easily. If I don’t have a constant set of stimulus coming in, I can very easily settle down and just let the world go by me. So as part of learning about myself, I realized I have to have a new book to read, something new to watch, a new place to go to, a new area to go for a walk. I have to constantly have that new input so that I can continue to create the output that I do create such as my column, my podcast, and the other stuff that I do.

___

___

That’s a great way of looking at it. Look at the inputs – the actions that you take – and then the results will come at some point.

___

___

That comes from an artist coach that I had become friends with many years ago. I worked at Walt Disney Imagineering for five years as an IT professional in the computer department. One of the biggest perks I got at that job was that I had access to all of the art coaches that all the creative people did. One of the things we discussed was that you cannot output art or other great things in life unless you have enough input coming in. Those are the raw materials that you use for your creation. I really took that to heart and have lived that particular philosophy for a long time now.

___

___

And if you can’t afford a coach, find that friend who may be a little bit ahead of you in life or in their career. I have a friend who I meet for coffee. We would always say we needed to get together more often, but it never happened because we didn’t make it happen. So we finally said that we would meet at a particular time every month. That’s what made the difference – getting it pre-planned.

___

___

I started a whole new event here in Los Angeles specifically for that reason. It’s LA Friday Coffee. It is coffee and casual conversation between work and dinner. We meet at various coffee places all around the city. But at its essence, that is my attempt to get myself out on a Friday night to meet and talk to people that I don’t see often enough.

___

___

And boy you just can’t beat coffee!

___

___

Unless it’s a martini!

___

___

Anyone who follows my Twitter stream knows that I’m into coffee!

___

___

We have to be, doing what we do. Right?

___

___

It’s weird. I’m a geek in all things. When I find a new interest, I geek out on it as much as I geek out on technology or anything else I’m interested in. So I’ve read up on roasting coffee, how to make coffee, and the perfect espresso shot. My wife’s family is Sicilian and we’ve been to Sicily so I’ve tasted real coffee. That whole geekness kind of filters into my whole life as well.

___

___

I’ll bet you make a mean cup of coffee though. When will it be ready? We’re on our way!

___

<itunes:summary>#8220;Worry gives a small thing a big shadow.#8221; Swedish proverb #160; A problem may start out as a small little thing. But worry makes it grow. It becomes all consuming. You can#8217;t stop thinking about it. Your heart beats faster. You can#8217;t fall asleep or you wake up and can#8217;t get back to sleep. It follows you, even when you try to forget about it. It turns to fear. . . #8220;Fear grows in darkness; if you think there#39;s a bogeyman around, turn on the light.#8221; Dorothy Thompson We#8217;re afraid because we#8217;re in the dark. We don#8217;t know what to expect. The future seems so uncertain. It frightens us. To get past that fright, turn on the light! Gather some research. Study the issue. Ask for help. Do anything you can to create more certainty in the face of uncertainty. You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing which you think you cannot do. Eleanor Roosevelt We fear things we think we can#8217;t do. We fear those problems for which we don#8217;t have a solution. We fear what we#8217;ve never done. Conquer fear by confronting it head-on. Take action. When you do something, you gain control. By gaining control, fear is diminished. I#39;m not afraid of storms, for I#39;m learning how to sail my ship. Louisa May Alcott When a storm blows through, there may be damage or there may not. But you faced it! You learned from it #8211; things you did well and things you would change. You gained confidence to tackle yet another situation. We all feel fearful at times. Don#8217;t let it consume you. Confront it head on with a plan of attack. Take action. Then learn. You#8217;ll only become stronger!
