<p>The theme was world poverty. One group was in Ohio and the other was in Kenya. Together they had raised the standard of living for over 5,000 people.</p>
<p>This year&rsquo;s theme is climate change. Now we&rsquo;re aware that some of you may be groaning right now. You don&rsquo;t think that temperatures are getting warmer or more extreme. Even if they are, you think it&rsquo;s something beyond our actions as humans.</p>
<p>Now others may be groaning because of the first group groaning. It doesn&rsquo;t matter either way.</p>
<p>We think we can all agree that we should be good stewards of the resources we&rsquo;re fortunate enough to have.</p>

<h3>One small step on the moon</h3>
<p>We recently celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Apollo moonwalk. Of course, we all remember the famous words uttered by Neil Armstrong as he became the first person to step on the moon: &ldquo;That&rsquo;s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.&rdquo;</p>
<p>Embedded in those amazing words is a nugget of incredible wisdom. It&rsquo;s how you change the world &#8230; one small step can lead to a giant leap.</p>
<p>The world. Your corner of it. You change one small step at a time.</p>
<h3>One small step leads to 34% more</h3>
<p>Imagine a trash can. It&rsquo;s sitting all by itself. People come up to it and throw things away. Only some of those things are recyclable.</p>
<p>So next to the first trash can, imagine an identical can with a lid &ndash; a lid with a six-inch hole cut in it.</p>
<p>You see, according to Sean Duffy, an assistant  professor of psychology at Rutgers University &ndash; Camden, we&rsquo;ve come to think that a trash can with a hole in the lid means it&rsquo;s for recyclables.</p>
<p>This simple step &ndash; setting a recyclable can right next to a regular trash can &ndash; <a href="http://www.helplightnj.com/content/PressCoverage/PhiladelphiaInquirer-Dec8-08.pdf" target="_blank" title="helplightnj.com/content/PressCoverage/PhiladelphiaInquirer">increased recycling of bottles and cans by 34% [PDF]</a> in a month long study he conducted on his campus.</p>
<p>To help you understand how huge that number is, researchers consider a behavioral change of 4 to 5 percent significant. So 34 percent is a giant leap!</p>
<p>If we all just make one small step like the one we described here, it can lead to a giant leap in conservation. Getting the most out of what we&rsquo;ve been given &#8230; sounds like bigg success!</p>

<p>Today we&rsquo;re celebrating one of the biggest successes of all time. Forty years ago today, on July 20, 1969, three men &ndash; Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins &ndash; landed a spacecraft on the moon for the first time.</p>
<p style="background-color: #ffffff"><font color="#ffffff">___</font></p>
<h3></h3>
<p style="background-color: #ffffff"><font color="#ffffff">___</font></p>
<p>They had launched their mission 4 days earlier, flying 203,000 miles to get there.</p>
<p>About six-and-a-half hours after they landed, with one-sixth of the people in the world tuned in to watch, Neil Armstrong descended down the ladder of the lunar space module. As he became the first person to walk on the surface of the moon, he uttered those famous words:</p>
<p> &ldquo;<em>That&rsquo;s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.</em>&rdquo;&nbsp;</p>
<p> We never get tired of hearing those words. It gives us goose bumps. They are so inspiring.</p>
<p> But we have to remember that it didn&rsquo;t just happen. It began as a bigg goal over eight years before.</p>
<p> On May 25, 1961, President John F. Kennedy said:</p>
<p> &ldquo;<em>I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth.</em>&rdquo;&nbsp;<br /> &nbsp;</p>
<h3>How to set goals like President Kennedy</h3>
<p>President Kennedy&rsquo;s goal was very well-stated. It was a SMART goal. SMART is an acronym for:</p>
<p><strong>S</strong>pecific<br /> <strong>M</strong>easurable<br /> <strong>A</strong>ction-Oriented<br /> <strong>R</strong>ealistic<br /> <strong>T</strong>ime- and Resource-Constrained</p>
<p> Let&rsquo;s look at each of these five components of a well-stated goal using President Kennedy&rsquo;s goal as an example.</p>
<p> <strong>Specific</strong><br /> President Kennedy said that we were going to do two things:</p>
<ul>
<li> land a man on the moon</li>
<li> return him safely to earth</li>
</ul>
<p> You can&rsquo;t get much more specific than that. In this case, it may be easier to think about what wouldn&rsquo;t be specific. He could have said, &ldquo;We&rsquo;re going to land a man somewhere in space.&rdquo; That&rsquo;s not specific. He clearly articulated the destination.</p>
<p> <strong>Measurable</strong><br /> President Kennedy&rsquo;s goal was clearly measurable. We would certainly know if a man had landed on the moon. We could certainly tell if he returned safely to earth.</p>
<p> Note, though, that landing on the moon and then not being able to get back safely would have meant the goal was not reached.</p>
<p> Let&rsquo;s bring this point on being measurable safely back to earth. Here&rsquo;s an example of a goal that is not measurable:</p>
<p> &ldquo;I&rsquo;m going to increase my income next year.&rdquo;</p>
<p> What does that mean? If you increase it by $1, did you really accomplish what you set out to do? A well-stated goal would be:</p>
<p> &ldquo;I&rsquo;m going to increase my income by 5% next year.<br /> &ldquo;I&rsquo;m going to increase my income by $2,000 next year.&rdquo;</p>
<p> Now you&rsquo;ll know if you accomplish what you set out to do.</p>
<p> <strong>Action-oriented</strong><br /> When <a href="http://archives.cnn.com/2001/TECH/space/05/25/kennedy.moon/speech.excerpts.pdf" target="_blank" title="CNN.com: Kennedy/Moon/Speech excerpts">President Kennedy called for this mission to send man to the moon [PDF]</a>, he made clear that it would take a tremendous commitment by the entire nation to reach this goal.</p>
<p>He called for innovation. He called for new money. He said it would take a concentrated effort for an extended period of time. But it would get done.</p>
<p> And get done it did. In a similar vein &ndash; with our personal goals or the goals we set for our businesses &ndash; we must commit to taking the necessary steps to achieve the goal.<br /> <strong><br /> Realistic</strong><br /> President Kennedy said, &ldquo;<em>I believe we have all the resources and talent necessary.</em>&rdquo;&nbsp;</p>
<p> Your goals can and should be bigg goals. They should stretch you beyond anything you&rsquo;ve ever accomplished before. But they have to be realistic.</p>
<p> Otherwise, they don&rsquo;t lead to bigg success. They only lead to discouragement.<br /> <strong><br /> Time- and Resource-constrained</strong><br /> This one&rsquo;s easy. President Kennedy said we would accomplish this goal by the end of the decade. It was 1961. The goal was reached July 20, 1969.</p>
<p> He made it clear that resources would have to be diverted from other good causes if this goal was to be reached.</p>
<p> When you set your goals, be sure to give yourself a due date. When will you accomplish this goal? What resources will be required to do it? Do you have them?</p>
<h3>Goal-setting is not goal-getting</h3>
<p>John F. Kennedy was able to reduce all of this into a simple goal statement of 31 powerful words that set this course of events into action.</p>
<p>Because he wasn&rsquo;t just a bigg goal-setter, he was a bigg goal-getter.</p>

<p> Just one final point:</p>
<p> Good goals have a reason behind them. They serve a bigger purpose. Every goal should lead you closer to the bigg success of which you dream. So we&rsquo;ll close with John F. Kennedy himself explaining why sending a man to the moon was so important:</p>
<p> &ldquo;<em>We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too.</em>&rdquo;<br /> &nbsp;</p>

Forty years ago today, on July 20, 1969, three men #8211; Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins #8211; landed a spacecraft on the moon for the first time. ___  ___ They had launched their mission 4 days earlier, flying 203,000 miles to get there. About six-and-a-half hours after they landed, with one-sixth of the people in the world tuned in to watch, Neil Armstrong descended down the ladder of the lunar space module. As he became the first person to walk on the surface of the moon, he uttered those famous words:  #8220;That#8217;s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.#8221;#160;  We never get tired of hearing those words. It gives us goose bumps. They are so inspiring.  But we have to remember that it didn#8217;t just happen. It began as a bigg goal over eight years before.  On May 25, 1961, President John F. Kennedy said:  #8220;I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth.#8221;#160; #160; How to set goals like President Kennedy President Kennedy#8217;s goal was very well-stated. It was a SMART goal. SMART is an acronym for: Specific Measurable Action-Oriented Realistic Time- and Resource-Constrained  Let#8217;s look at each of these five components of a well-stated goal using President Kennedy#8217;s goal as an example.  Specific President Kennedy said that we were going to do two things:    	 land a man on the moon 	 return him safely to earth   You can#8217;t get much more specific than that. In this case, it may be easier to think about what wouldn#8217;t be specific. He could have said, #8220;We#8217;re going to land a man somewhere in space.#8221; That#8217;s not specific. He clearly articulated the destination.  Measurable President Kennedy#8217;s goal was clearly measurable. We would certainly know if a man had landed on the moon. We could certainly tell if he returned safely to earth.  Note, though, that landing on the moon and then not being able to get back safely would have meant the goal was not reached.  Let#8217;s bring this point on being measurable safely back to earth. Here#8217;s an example of a goal that is not measurable:  #8220;I#8217;m going to increase my income next year.#8221;  What does that mean? If you increase it by $1, did you really accomplish what you set out to do? A well-stated goal would be:  #8220;I#8217;m going to increase my income by 5% next year. #8220;I#8217;m going to increase my income by $2,000 next year.#8221;  Now you#8217;ll know if you accomplish what you set out to do.  Action-oriented When President Kennedy called for this mission to send man to the moon [PDF], he made clear that it would take a tremendous commitment by the entire nation to reach this goal. He called for innovation. He called for new money. He said it would take a concentrated effort for an extended period of time. But it would get done.  And get done it did. In a similar vein #8211; with our personal goals or the goals we set for our businesses #8211; we must commit to taking the necessary steps to achieve the goal.  Realistic President Kennedy said, #8220;I believe we have all the resources and talent necessary.#8221;#160;  Your goals can and should be bigg goals. They should stretch you beyond anything you#8217;ve ever accomplished before. But they have to be realistic.  Otherwise, they don#8217;t lead to bigg success. They only lead to discouragement.  Time- and Resource-constrained This one#8217;s easy. President Kennedy said we would accomplish this goal by the end of the decade. It was 1961. The goal was reached July 20, 1969.  He made it clear that resources would have to be diverted from other good causes if this goal was to be reached.  When you set your goals, be </itunes:summary>

<p><strong>Steve Jobs didn&rsquo;t doubt it.</strong><br />He imagined a world where every person could have the same computing power that only large organizations had at that point. He dreamed of a world where computers were so user-friendly everybody could use them.</p>
<p><strong>John F. Kennedy didn&rsquo;t doubt it.</strong><br />He had the vision that man could walk on the moon. He set forth his vision with the power of words to direct an entire country&rsquo;s resources toward that mission. A short time later, Neil Armstrong uttered his famous words, &ldquo;One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.&rdquo;<br /><strong><br />Martin Luther King didn&rsquo;t doubt it.</strong><br />He had a dream that people would be judged solely by the contributions they made to society, not by the color of their skin. His dream led to a movement to bring equal opportunity to all.</p>
<p><strong>You may say that you don&rsquo;t have &#8230;</strong></p>
<p>&#8230; the imagination of JK Rowling. To create a world that can inspire millions of young people to read again at a time when everyone thought that only video games could attract them.</p>
<p>&nbsp;&#8230; the creativity of Steve Jobs. To see the possibilities for individuals to have access to technology at their fingertips.</p>
<p>&#8230; the vision of John F. Kennedy. To see the impossible as possible and to inspire an entire nation to get behind the effort.</p>
<p>&#8230; the oratory skills of Martin Luther King. To put the need for change front and center on the agenda of his country and to move people to effect that change.</p>
<p><strong>The unique power within you. </strong><br />You do have the power to imagine a better world and make a difference in your own life and the life of others. Your imagination flows from your unique genetic make-up and your personal experiences. </p>
<p>No one else &ndash; who has ever walked on this earth, is here now, or ever will be &ndash; can duplicate what you have and who you are. You are one of a kind! </p>
<p>It&rsquo;s up to you to live up to the potential that is within you &#8230; just imagine! How will you leave the world a better place? What are you doing now to make a difference in the lives of others?</p>
