We hear a recurring tune as we talk with many starry-eyed wanna-be entrepreneurs. It forms a chorus.
“I’m going to get rich!”
They’re enthusiastic. They’re excited. They’re full of ideas. The world is their oyster.
They’ve run the numbers. They are going to take over a market. They’re going to rule the world. Remember, they think…
“I’m going to get rich!”
But they won’t.
Putting money first
The surprising obstacle to getting rich is thinking only about getting rich. In other words, putting money first. If you put money first, you will fail.
Of course, money is important. So important, in fact, that it’s one of the five elements of BIGG success.
A business without money isn’t a business. So it isn’t about the money itself, it’s about the attitude toward money.
And more specifically – the priority given to money. Where does money place in your priorities as you think about starting up your own small business?
Don’t think about…
Don’t think about money if you want to be successful. Don’t think about yourself. Don’t think about your own needs. At least not yet. Not at the start.
Instead – think about your future customers:
- What do they want and need?
- What’s causing them pain?
- How might they gain?
- What could you do to solve the challenges they face?
- How can you help them get from where they are to where they want to be?
You see, it’s easy to plug number into a spreadsheet. It’s easy to pull an assumption out of the air. But until you’ve done the hard work of really thinking about your future customers, where they’re at and what they’re experiencing, you won’t come up with a good idea for your own small business.
Thinking isn’t enough
You need to think about your customers so long and so hard that you fully understand them.
You feel what they feel. You can empathize with them.
And the challenges they face demand a solution. A solution which you will offer with your own small business.
Don’t think of them as customers
Just one more thing before we go – we’ve called them customers. We often talk about target markets or niches.
But don’t ever forget this BIGG idea – they’re not customers.
They’re not a target market. They’re not a niche.
People in pain. People who want a better life. People who need someone to help them.
And that’s where you come in.
Find a way to solve the problems of enough people and the money will follow. You will get rich in your own small business.
Now that’s BIGG success!
Today we talked about being selfish. On our next show, we’ll discuss why it pays to be selfish in your own small business.
