How exciting it was to see American Pharoah win the Triple Crown, ending a 36-year drought (the Triple Crown of horse racing consists of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes). Jockey Victor Espinoza sealed his place in history.

The roar of the crowd.

The sweet taste of victory.

All of a sudden, you’re everyone’s best friend.

Everybody loves a winner.

But this jockey knows about the other side of the coin. This was his third attempt at the Triple Crown. He lost the previous two times.

It’s really lonely at the bottom

In a biographical article on ESPN (written before the race), Victor discusses his first loss, thirteen long years ago. He says he was prepared for the loss.

However, he wasn’t prepared for…

…the sound of silence.

The loneliness of defeat.

They say it’s lonely at the top.

It’s REALLY lonely at the bottom.

The quiet moments determine your destiny

Entrepreneurs know this feeling all too well. You start a business. You get a news blurb. People show up for your ribbon cutting ceremony. They congratulate you. They take pictures with you. They give you a pat on the back. They’re so excited for you.

But they soon leave. You’re on your own.

Success is a do-it-yourself endeavor. You have to do it. You have to drive it. You have to deliver.

You start a blog. It’s so exciting. It’s fun.

Until you get that sinking, gnawing feeling in the pit of your stomach that no one, except your closest friends and family, is reading.

We could go on and on.

There are a lot of quiet moments on the journey to BIGG success.

It’s in those moments – when the overwhelming void of noise feels like a crowd of people screaming at you, taunting you, in the dark.

It’s in those moments when you find your character. And your character determines your destiny.

Testing turns triumph to tragedy

Most people quit. They can’t handle the setback. Defeat has left them defeated.

Winners come to understand a very important concept:

Testing turns to triumph.

But only if you don’t give up, only if you try again.

But just trying again isn’t enough – you have to learn from the tests and apply that know-how the next time out.

Winners are battle-scarred

Look at any winner and you’ll see a battle-scarred veteran.

If they don’t get scraped and bruised before they achieve BIGG success, mark these words – they will afterward.

And that’s a whole lot harder!

3 factors help you persevere

So how do you do it? How do you continue to persevere?

We’ll share three BIGG factors which help, based on research and our experience.

  • Purpose

Note we didn’t say passion. We think “follow your passion” is bad advice.

You need a BIGG purpose which is both practical and emotional. It clearly defines why you do what you do and who you do it for.

For example, Doris Christopher started The Pampered Chef so families could cook together and she could make money to put her kids through college without sacrificing time with them. From these humble beginnings, she built a company she sold for $750 million!

  • People

But not just any people. Here’s an important thing to understand:

Most people don’t understand people who want to do BIGG things.

So if you seek an extraordinary life, you can’t spend all your time with ordinary people.

You need to make time for like-minded people. You can support them. They can support you. You may even set up an entrepreneurial support group.

So you’re not alone. You have people you can turn to who have walked a mile in your shoes. And continue to do so.

Most people’s eyes will glaze over if you talk about your business. So save this subject for the right people. They’ll get it because they’ve lived it.

And finally…

  • Pray

Research shows entrepreneurs pray more than the general population.

We understand. Sometimes you aren’t BIGG enough. Sometimes you need to feel in tune with a greater source of power and wisdom. We’ve found prayer to be a calming force that leads to BIGG success!
