In this 3-part series, we’ll get Facebook Marketing Tips for 2016 from social media guru John Haydon. John Haydon is the Founder of Inbound Zombie, a social media strategy firm, and one of the most sought-after digital marketing experts for nonprofits. He is also the author of Facebook Marketing for Dummies* and Facebook Marketing All-in-One for Dummies*.

Customer Service First, Marketing Second

John tells us that a great feature for non-profits or any business using a Facebook Page, is the Messaging feature. John says it will become more of a customer service dashboard. He shares the different ways you can reply to customers/donors in a more efficient way. He says this will allow for deeper relationships, by letting you respond more effectively. There are limits – as businesses still cannot send messages to people on Facebook. You can respond (a limited number of times) per message you receive. He says to think of messaging as a customer service tool.

The Facebook Funnel

John says that the Facebook news feed isn’t where you are likely to get people to buy your product or service, or donate to your cause. You’re more likely to get people to join your newsletter, download an ebook, or sign a petition or pledge. He says that’s kind of the “next step” in building relationships.

He says Facebook is at the top of the funnel and at the very bottom. At the top, Facebook is about social, not about pulling out a credit card. Asking for an email lowers the barrier and is a more realistic next step in the relationship, than asking for someone to pull out credit card right away.

As for the bottom of the funnel – that’s where word of mouth comes to play. Ask people to share about you. Send out a message after someone has bought for you, or donated. In that email, you ask your buyer to tell their friends about you on Facebook. Turn your customers into advocates.

Email is so important in this mix. It’s the middle of the funnel because you have someone interested enough in you, that they’ll let you to interrupt them in their inbox. That’s pretty special! Through email, you can send custom messages based on your subscribers actions. John shares some of those customization options and triggered messages you can create based on opens, non-opens, clicks, etc.

The hard work is setting up the systems, but once set, you have a nice way to be able to guide your most engaged and least engaged subscribers to the next step.
