Imagine leaving a concert and trying to meet up with a friend. Before you can make your way to them, what’s the first thing you need to know?

Where you are.

That simple idea is the foundation of Step 1 in our Life Map Course—your baseline. It’s your “You Are Here” marker. Without it, no set of directions will get you where you want to go.

Why Your Baseline Matters

Too often, people chase after goals without first understanding their starting point. That’s like trying to run a marathon without knowing whether you’re standing at the starting line…or three miles down the road.

When you know your baseline, you gain:

  • Clarity – You see your strengths, weaknesses, and resources with fresh eyes.
  • Focus – You can filter out distractions and zero in on what really matters.
  • Momentum – Each step forward feels like progress because you know exactly where you began.

Your baseline also prevents burnout. We’ve seen smart, hard-working people exhaust themselves pursuing goals that weren’t aligned with their reality. A clear starting point helps you set goals that truly fit your life.

How to Define Your Baseline

Start with a self-assessment. Ask yourself:

  • What’s working for me right now?
  • Where do I need to improve?
  • What habits or mindsets are helping—or holding me back?

Next, get outside feedback. A trusted friend, colleague, or mentor may see strengths and blind spots you’ve missed.

Then, write it down. We recommend journaling. It makes your baseline tangible and gives you a reference point to measure your progress against.

Finally, if you want a deeper look, try a SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats). Even jotting down a few notes in each category can provide powerful insight.

What Happens If You Skip This Step

Without a baseline, you risk setting goals that aren’t realistic or aligned with your true priorities. You can work really hard and end up nowhere near where you wanted to be.

We’ve seen people, good, smart, hard working people  burn out because they chased goals that didn’t fit their life.

Knowing your baseline helps you avoid that frustration and stay on a path that actually works for you.

Put It Into Practice

Take 10 minutes today to jot down where you are right now –  your baseline –  in your personal, professional, and financial lives.

And remember: this is only the beginning. Next time we’re going to cover Step 2 of the Life Map Course. We’re going to take that Baseline that we talked about today and start shaping your Vision. Your North Star.
