Sometimes a goal looks great on paper… until you start living it.
A friend once told us she had accepted a new job — a big raise, better title, more responsibility. She was thrilled. It felt like the opportunity she’d been waiting for.
But when we saw her again months later, the excitement was gone. Her hours were longer. Her commute doubled. She was missing her kids’ events. And she didn’t even enjoy the work.
She looked exhausted and said, “I feel like I made a huge mistake.”
Her purpose and her goals weren’t aligned — and her life was paying the price.
It’s a powerful reminder of why this step – Step 5 in our Life Map Course series matters so much.
Why Aligned Goals Matter
A goal should never pull you away from the life you want. It should pull you toward it.
When your goals align with your vision (where you’re going), your values (what matters most), and your mission (your deeper why), they become energizing instead of draining. They focus your decisions. They help you say yes to the right opportunities and no to distractions.
And as George shares in the episode, misalignment has a price.
A friend took a job because the paycheck was irresistible. But the cost as that the role didn’t fit her mission, values, or vision. Within months she was miserable… until she made a change and found a job that aligned beautifully.
Aligned goals create forward momentum. Misaligned ones create turmoil.
How to Create Aligned Goals
To create goals that are aligned with your values, vision and mission, use the BIGG Success Power Triangle. Ask yourself these three questions:
- Does this goal support my vision?
- Does it reflect my values?
- Does it connect to my mission?
When all three connect, you feel it. It clicks. You feel pulled toward the goal naturally — without forcing motivation.
Here’s an example of of an aligned goal using the BIGG Success Power Triangle that we shared in the episode:
Let’s say your vision is to have more time freedom. Your values include family and health. And your mission is to help people grow.
Aligned goal: Launching a coaching program with flexible hours.
Misaligned goal: Taking extra consulting work that requires nights/weekends.
Summary:
The coaching program with flexible hours supports your vision of time freedom, honors your values by allowing space for family and well-being, and connects to your mission of helping people grow.
Taking on extra consulting work that demands nights and weekends might sound productive, but it contradicts your vision, squeezes your family value, and may not support your mission. It’s misaligned.
This is the difference between feeling energized vs. feeling trapped.
The Secret to Making BIGG Goals Doable
Once your goal is aligned, you need a way to move it forward — without feeling overwhelmed.
In our BIGG Success Life Map Course, we use milestones,
Milestones help you break down your BIGG meaningful goals into doable steps.
A milestone is simply a clear marker along the path — something you reach on the way to the bigger goal.
They work because:
They give you quick wins.
They build momentum.
They prove you’re making progress even when the finish line is far away.
Example
If your goal is to write a book, your milestones might be:
Outline all the chapters
Write the first 1,000 words
Finish chapter one
Each milestone tells your brain: I’m moving forward.
3 Common Goal-Setting Traps to Avoid
Setting too many goals
When everything matters, nothing does.
Choose the goals that matter most right now.
Setting goals based on others’ expectations
A goal that doesn’t resonate emotionally won’t stick.
You need goals that reflect your vision, mission, and values — not someone else’s.
The all-or-nothing trap
You miss a day, then you feel like you failed.
Progress isn’t linear. Your job is to keep moving, not be perfect.
Aligned goals give you grace and clarity — even when you get off track.
