Why Attention Is Your Most Valuable Asset

Why Attention Is Your Most Valuable Asset

Protect your attention before distractions steal what matters most. In episode #1205 of The BIGG Success Show, discover practical habits that help you focus on the life you want to create.

[Podcast Transcript]

A while back, we were hanging out with friends at one of our favorite neighborhood bars where everybody knows your name. A group walked in, immediately pulled out their phones, and spent more time scrolling than celebrating the birthday that brought them together.

Sadly, that scene has become common. It raises a BIGG question: What is one of the most valuable things you own, yet give away without realizing it? Your attention.

Most people think their most valuable asset is time. We’d like to suggest something even more valuable: your attention. Wherever your attention goes, your life follows.

Your Attention Builds Your Future

You hear people say, “Time is money.” Well, if “Time is money”, then “Attention is life”.

You can have plenty of time. But if your attention is scattered, very little gets accomplished. Your attention determines:

  • What you notice.
  • What you learn.
  • Who you spend time with.
  • What opportunities you capitalize on.
  • What kind of person you become.

That’s because, attention is now one of the biggest drivers of a prosperous life. Today’s technology isn’t simply competing for your time. It’s competing for your mind.

Every notification. Every headline. Every endless scroll. They all demand a response to one question: “Can I have your attention?”

The problem is that every “Yes” to distraction often becomes a “No” to something that matters more.

The Hidden Cost of Constant Distraction

Most of us don’t lose our attention all at once.

We lose it a few seconds at a time.

A small interruption here. Another interruption there. Before you know it, interruptions are interrupting interruptions!

The greatest loss isn’t productivity. It’s presence. When your attention is everywhere, you’re fully present nowhere.

Your Attention Determines Your Direction

Think of your attention like sunlight. Whatever it shines on grows.

If you constantly focus on worry Worry grows
If you focus on comparison Discontent grows
If you focus on learning Wisdom grows
If you focus on your relationships Love grows

That’s why at BIGG Success, we encourage people to create a Life Map. When you know where you’re going, you stop giving equal attention to everything competing for your time.

Instead of asking, “What should I do next?” You begin asking, “Does this deserve my attention?”

That one question can change your life.

Five Practical Ways to Reclaim your attention every day

You don’t need to abandon technology – just make sure you’re being intentional in its use.

1. Own Your Morning
Don’t let your phone decide how your day begins.

Create your day before reacting to incoming requests for your time by others. Spend your first fifteen to thirty minutes doing things that center you: praying, reading, journaling, exercising, or reviewing your Life Map before checking notifications.

How you start your morning sets the tone of your entire day.

2. Turn Off Most Notifications
If everything is urgent, nothing is.

Most notifications aren’t urgent. They’re invitations to stop doing what matters.

We found that once we turned off almost every notification, life got a little quieter. We missed very little but gained a lot more focus and peace.

3. Design your environment so you don’t have to rely on willpower.

Here’s a simple experiment: delete your social media apps from your phone for just one week. If you really need them, use your laptop instead.

That little bit of extra effort creates just enough friction to make mindless scrolling less automatic. And you may be surprised by the result—you’ll probably feel more in control, more focused, and a little less pulled in every direction.

4. Protect Time for Deep Work

Most of us schedule meetings. But how often do we schedule uninterrupted time to think, create, or solve an important problem?

Try blocking out time with no email. No messages. No phone. No multitasking. Just one meaningful task. At first, you’ll probably notice just how often you’re tempted to check something. That awareness alone is a powerful first step.

In a world that’s constantly competing for your attention, your ability to focus may become one of your greatest strengths.

5. Give Your Attention to People

One of the greatest gifts you can give another person isn’t money. It’s your full attention.

Here’s one of the great ironies of our time. We’re more connected than ever, yet many people have never felt more alone.

Maybe it’s because we’ve confused being connected with truly being present.

Try putting your phone away during dinner. Look people in the eye. Listen without planning what you’re going to say next.

The strongest relationships are built one attentive conversation at a time.

Don’t Drift Through Life. Live on Purpose

You don’t build a meaningful life by accident. You build it one choice at a time.

Each day, ask yourself one important question: “What deserves my attention today?”

That’s one of the reasons we created the Life Map. We wanted a way to step back from the noise and reconnect with what matters most before the world starts pulling us in a dozen different directions.

When you stop reacting to everything that feels urgent and start choosing what truly matters, something begins to change. One thoughtful choice leads to another. Over time, those choices shape the life you want to live.

BIGG Assignment

For the next seven days, become an Attention Investor.

Every morning, before the demands of the day take over, write down the three things most deserving of your attention.

Then invest your attention there first.

Create an environment that helps you succeed. Silence unnecessary notifications. Put your phone in another room when you’re working. Take a walk without your devices. Spend a few quiet minutes reviewing your Life Map before you open your inbox.

At the end of each day, ask yourself: “Did I invest my attention in what mattered most?”

Don’t worry about getting it perfect. Just notice what changes when you become more intentional about where your attention goes.

Because attention is like compound interest. Small, consistent investments today create remarkable returns over time.

BIGG Takeaway

You don’t become successful because you have more time than everyone else. You become successful because you choose where your attention goes.

Invest it in the people you love, the work that matters, and the life you want to create.

Because your attention isn’t just your greatest asset…It’s where your life happens.

And that’s how you achieve BIGG Success.
