4 Pointers for Praising Your People

Leadership skills

trophies

Research shows that employees are attracted to, and stay with, leaders who recognize them for good performance. Everybody loves to be part of a winning team. That’s why great leaders willingly share the glory. It’s one of the greatest motivational tools at your disposal.

As you lead your troops to success, one of the most fulfilling parts of your work should be recognizing people who have made the most significant contributions. Yet many leaders fail to take full advantage of this opportunity.

Here are four pointers for praising your people:

Timely
Let’s be clear – recognizing an employee for good performance at any time is better than not recognizing them at all. However, if you want the greatest impact, you should acknowledge the performance as soon after it happens, or gets reported, as possible. You’ll get an immediate boost from these people (and others), so why wait?

Publicly
You should praise your employees publicly. Tell anyone and everyone you can about the wonderful things they’ve done. Make it as public as possible in every way possible. When you recognize people publicly like this, others will notice. Some will get jealous. Your best troops will be challenged to step up so they can get the same attention.

Fairly

You should recognize people for contributing to the goals you’ve defined. Period. Don’t play favorites in praising your people. You’ll discourage your other troops who are making honest efforts to contribute. If praise gets political, it will cease to be effective. That’s one of the worst things that could happen to you as a leader.

Generously
Great leaders dish out too much credit. You shouldn’t recognize people for things they don’t do; that won’t accomplish anything. However, when in doubt, spread it out – spread the praise so as many people as possible feel like they’re part of the progress.

You’ll find that keeping credit to yourself doesn’t accomplish much in the end. Recognizing your troops generously will!

100 Tips to Succeed Bigg!

100

Today is a special blog for us – it is number 100!

Bigg Success was born on Nov 12, 2007 with our first Bigg Success Show. It’s been a bigg ride so far!

Comments from you
It’s always great to hear from you. One of our favorite comments was a listener who told us that The Bigg Success Show is her daily mojo!

We also love it when people tell us they got a good laugh. Admittedly, it’s easier to deliver a laugh on the show than in our blog – sometimes it doesn’t translate well.

We strive to deliver a daily lesson and a laugh in five minutes or so. We believe that it’s better not to be too serious, but still give practical suggestions. It’s been great to hear from so many of you that you did indeed use one of our tidbits.

We don’t know it all and we don’t pretend to. In fact, on the show, George said, “I usually assume that I know less than anyone in the room. Unfortunately, it usually turns out that I’m right!”We value your input and it’s so easy to give it – all you have to do is type! Just click on the article title and look for “Leave a Reply” at the bottom of the page.

Celebrating a milestone
So today is a milestone for us. When we discussed 144 Climbing the Stairway to Success], we said you should give yourself a treat when you hit a goal. Well, we’re practicing what we preach by taking some time to savor the moment with you today.

100 tips – we’ve delivered three times our promise
We promised 100 tips to succeed bigg in our title today. We include a bigg quote in every blog. So go to our Bigg Quotes page and you’ll find a link to the blog where that quote was featured. You can count them – there’s 100!

We would count them ourselves but between the two of us we only have twenty fingers and toes!

In reality, we discuss at least three tips on every show, so you’ll find over 300 tips to succeed bigg! That’s three times what we promised! Check it out for yourself! We dare you!

Two of our favorites
You’ve heard us say that when you face an obstacle, you have to find way past it. At Super Bowl time, we did a show called 196]. We wanted to highlight one of the most famous fumbles of all time, but we couldn’t get licensing permission to air the original broadcast. So we re-created it ourselves.

Mary-Lynn said she’s never been a sports broadcaster. It was fun! Finding a creative solution to the problem was even more rewarding.

We did a show on multi-tasking – Can You Walk and Chew Gum at the Same Time? Unfortunately, George showed all of you that he can’t.

Mary-Lynn said George better give up on Dancing with the Stars!

Announcement

On February 29, we did a special leap year show about the growing trend of people traveling while working – Leaping from Place to Place.

And speaking of taking a leap, we got married that day! George said it’s great – he only has to remember an anniversary every four years!

Will you help?
We started Bigg Success to bring together a community of like-minded people who would help each other succeed bigg. We may be the conductors, but it takes an orchestra for the music to be sweet.

Here’s one thing YOU can do to help – tell everyone you know about Bigg Success!

When you hear a show or read a blog that you like, share it!We thank you so much for being part of Bigg Success!

Our bigg quote today is by David Joseph Schwartz, who said,

“The person determined to achieve maximum success learns the principle that progress is made one step at a time. A house is built one brick at a time. Football games are won a play at a time. A department store grows bigger one customer at a time. Every big accomplishment is a series of little accomplishments.”

Your accomplishments may seem tiny on their own, but when you put them together, they’re mighty.

That’s the mighty tinies, not the tidy whities!

Next time, we’ll discuss five laws of stratospheric success. Until then, here’s to your bigg success!

Happiness is Freedom to Spend Your Time How You Want

Timeless Principles

flowers

We probably have more today than any generation since the beginning of time. Yet are we happier?

According to news reports, the answer is no. Research seems to support that notion. So why aren’t we happier?

It seems that many people relate happiness to monetary success. As a bigg goal-getter, you may be one of those people. There’s nothing wrong with that, as long as you realize its limitations.

Its limitation is that happiness from monetary success is short-lived. You’re happy when you reach that level. Then you start looking at all the people who are at a yet higher level. All of a sudden, you’re unhappy again.

Define your desired destination
A better approach is to clearly define the lifestyle that will make you happy. How much money will it take to support that lifestyle?

Create a plan to invest your money wisely so your money makes enough to support that desired lifestyle. Now you’re free to spend your time however you choose. Now wouldn’t that make your happy? Happiness is freedom; freedom is happiness.

Then resist the temptations (and there will be many) to want more than that, unless you clearly understand why it will make you happier. And getting to boast about your bigg new you-name-it to your neighbor probably isn’t sufficient!

It’s a very short-term thing. You’re seeking long-term happiness. What makes you happy? Define it. Get it. Enjoy it.

The journey has its rewards
You don’t have to wait to be happy until you reach your final destination. Enjoy the journey as well! You’ve determined what will give you the freedom to spend your time however you want. You’ve mapped out a plan to get there.

Now, celebrate each accomplishment along the way! Stop and smell the roses!

Appreciate how far you’ve come. Be thankful for what you’ve learned. Be grateful for all the people who have helped you get there.

As you develop this attitude of gratitude, you’ll find that you’ll be happier now. You’ll enjoy the journey more because you’re taking time to appreciate what you’re experiencing – both the good and the bad. These experiences are building a better “you”.

If you’re happy and you know it …
