Town Outlaws Success

crazytown | BIGG SuccessCrazytown, June 10, 2011. In a special session held last night at City Hall, Crazytown council members outlawed breathing.

The move was a response to a complaint from a Crazytown resident. This resident got a cold after his wife breathed on him.

He contacted his councilperson demanding the city of Crazytown take action. After much heated debate, the Council voted 5 – 4 to make it illegal to breathe.

No residents of Crazytown could be reached today for comment.

Imagine checking the news one day and seeing this story. Far fetched? Of course. But haven’t you ever found yourself trying to understand the logic behind some new law?

BIGG success is life on your own terms. As a citizen, you must zealously guard your right to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

Entrepreneurs, small business owners and other BIGG goal-getters must add political engagement to their to-do list. Make time to share your views with your elected officials.

Otherwise, you may wake up one morning to find out your town outlawed success. Unfortunately, we’ve experienced this firsthand. Not in our town, but from our state.

We’re based in Illinois. Our state just became the fourth state to tax internet sales. It instantly shut down a portion of our business.

For example, we are not affiliates of Amazon any longer. When we discuss books or other products, we will still link you to Amazon for your convenience.

That’s the main reason we did it anyway. The few pennies on the dollar we received were a nice tip.

We understand the arguments on the other side. However, most of the people who voted on the bill don’t understand affiliate sales. We will continue trying to help them grasp the concept.

You must do the same for your business, your career and your life. It’s simply not an option anymore.

No Limits

bigg-success-profiles.jpgWe’re introducing a new feature today called Bigg Success Profiles. We want to feature members of our community talking about what life on your own terms means to them. Today on The Bigg Success Show, we talked with Pavel Sokolovsky. Pavel is one of the founders of an exciting new business, Meet Me at Green. Let’s get to the conversation …

marylynn
Welcome to The Bigg Success Show, Pavel.

___

___

pavelThanks Mary-Lynn. Thanks George. I’m a long-time listener and first-time caller!

___

___

marylynnWe love talking about life on your own terms and we love hearing the stories of members of our community. So let’s kick it off, Pavel. What does life on your own terms mean to you?

___

___

pavelTo me, life on my own terms has a lot to do with ambition. I believe I’m a pretty ambitious young man and I wouldn’t want anybody to put a limit on what I can and cannot do professionally or socially, for that matter. One of the reasons I went toward small business, and not corporations as many of my classmates did, is because I didn’t want to be pigeon-holed by my level at the corporation. Whether you’re a first-year associate, analyst, or whatever it might be, it tends to come with a lot of strings attached and affects whether or not your ideas are taken seriously. Now I’m sure there are people who break this mold – there are all-stars – but this tends to be the case. So that’s why I went into a small business. I wanted to be able to use my potential to its fullest. I want to explore my limits and be the best business person I can be. Starting my own business allows me to do that because I don’t have a boss saying, “No – you can’t do this project.” I only have the market telling me what it will and will not accept, which is great.

___

___

georgeThat’s awesome, Pavel. Your classmates were going off to Fortune 500 companies and large consulting firms. Did they ever question you or ridicule you for going off on your own?

___

___

pavelLuckily, they’ve all been very supportive of me. They all know that I’m very entrepreneurial. So they tend to accept that. They have their day jobs – from 8 to 6 or 9 to 5, whatever it may be – and I work what I’ll call my extended hours!

___

___

george
I like the way you said that!

___

___

pavelBut we’re after slightly different things. It’s understood that there’s going to be more than one way to get what we need out of life.

___

___

marylynnEverybody for their own terms, right? Pavel, what would you say is your biggest challenge to living life on your own terms right now?

___

___

pavelWhen you’re starting a business, it’s not the same as a regular corporate job because your cash flow is a little more unpredictable. Many times, you’ll find yourself pinching pennies because you didn’t get paid this week. But you keep your head up because you know if you achieve your goals, the money will naturally follow. While your cash flow is tight, you just have to accept it, not spend it, save up, invest in your business and hope for the best!

___

___

marylynnSo Pavel, what are you doing right now to overcome this challenge?

___

___

pavelI try to save up a little in a slush fund to treat myself every now and then and to keep my sanity. I like to go out with my friends. I also have a hobby purchasing books on Amazon. I just can’t stop!

___

___

georgeNice plug! Ca-ching! Now Pavel, what are you doing that’s really fun – either at work or in your personal time?

___

___

pavelMy day job is fun. Meet Me at Green has been fun – programming the web site, organizing the people involved and trying to recruit more members. As this community grows, so does my site and its usefulness to all the members. I’m sure you expected an answer like, “I love to go skiing in Aspen on the weekend” but, in reality, when I work on Meet Me at Green, I am having fun. That’s the best part of it.

___

___

georgeFortunately, or unfortunately, we can totally relate to what you’re saying. It occurs to me, Pavel, you are really into green – whether it be money or the environment!

___

___

pavelThe money is definitely not my number one goal, but it’s a good way to validate what you’re doing.

___

___

marylynnWe wish you the best of luck with your business, Meet Me at Green. Can anybody join?

___

___

pavelWe’re focusing on businesses that are involved in green products and services. But if you have a passion for green, if energy efficiency or environmental awareness is important to you, then please sign up! Membership is currently free.

___

Ben Franklin Got It Wrong

Change. A word that sparks fear in many people.

We work to get to that comfortable spot, and we want to stay there.

“Nothing is certain except death and taxes.”
Ben Franklin

We think he got it wrong, not in the message, but in the semantics. We think he should have explicitly included change as something that is certain, rather than making it implicit in his quote.

Will you lead or follow?

Even when it’s change that we’re creating ourselves, it can be scary. But it’s especially frightening when it’s a surprise.

For example, picture Jane telling her boss that she’s accepted a new position. She’s going to experience change. But isn’t that more comfortable than Jane’s boss telling her that her job is being eliminated?

It’s better to be a leader of change than a follower.

Who’s in control?
However, you can’t always control change. What you can control all the time is how you choose to respond to it.

You can also try to anticipate it. For example, as technology continues to develop, change is occurring more and more rapidly. Isn’t it safe to assume that this will continue?

So you have a choice to make. You either develop the skills to anticipate change so you get ahead of it or you just respond to it, after the pain becomes too great to do anything else.

Bigg action item – Separate the change into fads and trends
There are fads and there are trends. Fads come and go, so don’t worry about them. Trends are long-term. Get on board with them.

Divide a sheet into two columns – one called “Fads” and the other called “Trends”.  In your chosen career, think about the things affecting your industry. Now start putting those changes into the appropriate column.

What will affect your future income? Something will – for good or for bad!

Is it a short-term phenomenon? Or is it likely to continue? You can position yourself properly by seeing the change coming.

What opportunities will be created? What skills will be important? Do you have them? Can you get them?

Develop a plan for what you need to do to position yourself to take advantage of the trends.

Where do I get this information?

We’ll look at two examples. Search for the name of your industry followed by the word “association”. For example, “beauty salon association” yielded a half-dozen or so associations in Google.

You can also subscribe to magazines for your industry, or just about any industry you’re interested in following. They’re often free, supported by the advertisers. Amazon has an excellent resource that lists magazines by industry. It’s an extensive list!

So there are a number of ways to get the information you need so you can embrace change rather than begrudge it.

Leading-Edge Application

In our leading-edge applications, we usually tell you about a tool that you can get for free. That’s not the case this week because Amazon’s Kindle has caught our attention.

Kindle is a portable reading device that helps you keep up when you’re on the move. You can easily download blogs, newspapers, magazines, and books through a wireless connection just like your cell phone. No need for WiFi!

Amazon used a special “electronic paper” display so reading on your Kindle is as easy as reading a book! At the size of a paperback book, Kindle is easy to take with you. No need to worry about what books you’ll bring with you on your next vacation – take them all, on your Kindle!

A Kindle can be pricey, but the upside is that you can buy many books from the New York Times best seller list, as well as many other best sellers, for just $9.99!

In all, more than 90,000 books are already available for download. The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post can be delivered direct to your Kindle. Here’s another great Kindle feature – you get a sneak peek into a book before deciding if you want it. You can read the entire first chapter as a trial.

Kindle your interest in reading the 21st century way!

*We are an Amazon Affiliate. If you click on the link to the image above and purchase a Kindle, we will get a small portion of the sale.
