How to Change Your Career

Tutors On TV | BIGG SuccessIt’s time for another edition of Tutors on TV.

On the season finale of Men of a Certain Age, Terry (played by Scott Bakula) is on a test drive with a customer. Terry is an actor turned car salesman.

He and the customer are sitting at a stoplight. The customer says he can’t pull the trigger right now.

Terry says, “Decisions are hard.” Amen, brother!

Birds of a feather

Terry noticed a bunch of birds sitting on a utility line. He says, “Do you think they worry like we do?”

He continues, “One bird flies away. They all follow. He has wings. He can just go.”

The light turns green. Terry and the customer just sit there, watching the birds. Nothing is happening.

The person behind them honks their horn. All the birds fly off. Terry and the customer laugh. Terry makes the sale. He’s now the #1 car salesman at the dealership where he works.

Flying away

But in spite of his success, he isn’t happy. He had directed a commercial on the fly for the car dealership. It was a BIGG success.

In the next scene, Terry is talking to Owen, whose family owns the dealership. Owen is both Terry’s boss and one of his best friends.

Terry tells Owen he wants to quit. Owen tells Terry that he has a good thing going. He’s making good money. He’s getting comfortable. But he’s been uncomfortable for so long that it feels wrong.

But Terry says he felt like himself again. He was doing what he loved, only now behind the camera. Terry resigns. There was just one problem…

Terry hasn’t told his girlfriend yet. He’s notorious for not making commitments. But he’s committed to her. Or at least that’s what she thought…

He hadn’t told her he was going to quit. He told her he had quit. She doesn’t take it well.

Later, they meet up. He says, “Give me a year. If it doesn’t work, I’ll go back to selling cars.” She agrees.

6 lessons for changing your career

  • You have to lead

Decisions are hard. But sometimes you just know it’s time to fly away.

You can’t wait for others. You have to lead. It’s your life.

  • Communication is critical

It’s your life but you affect others. So it’s important to communicate with those closest to you.

You want them to feel good about flying away with you.

  • Stick to your convictions

Your friends may not fully understand at first. They may try to talk you out of it. You have to hold your convictions. You have to do what’s right for you.

  • Your flight may be a short one

Don’t think you have to fly too far away. Sometimes, your ideal career may be in the same field. You’re just suited for a different role.

  • Your job

Almost nothing in life is all or nothing. Few things are permanent.

Your life is a laboratory. No matter what your job is, your job is to conduct experiments. To test out new things.

  • Actdapt!

Some of the things you test out will work out. Great!

In others cases, they wont. Act and adapt – actdapt!

It leads to BIGG success!

3 Influencers of Career Success

influencers of success | BIGG SuccessHere’s something to always keep in mind throughout your career:

Growth creates opportunity.

It’s not profound. It’s completely logical. Yet many people never stop to think about it.

So when you’re setting your career goals, think about where the growth is. There are three influencers of career success: your occupation, your industry and your company.

BIGG success is life on your own terms. It’s about entrepreneuring your life. Whether you ever plan to be an entrepreneur in the traditional sense of the word, you are in charge of your life. You own it lock, stock and barrel.

So how does life on your own terms fit with the three influencers of career success?

You want to match your own passions and proficiencies with an opportunity.

Since growth creates opportunity, as you evaluate your occupation, your industry and your company, you want to look for growth.

Let’s run through two scenarios today; the two extremes.

Scenario 1: Growth in all three

Under this scenario, you’ll likely stay put. Opportunity should come your way. Keep building your network. Do all that you can to establish yourself as an expert in your field.

Always be on the lookout for projects that play to your strengths. And set your own timetable – when you want to get promoted – and go for it.

Scenario 2: No growth (or worse) in all three

You can wait. But as a BIGG goal-getter, unless you’re near the end of your career, it’s time to get proactive. Clearly, it’s time for a career change.

In this case, you want to start with you. What are your passions? What are your strengths?

You want to really do some thinking before you start considering possible careers. Otherwise, you’ll become overwhelmed with choices.

By starting internally, you can quickly eliminate the external options that don’t fit you. Then you can focus on finding the best opportunities for you.

Mary-Lynn FosterThis is the scenario I found myself in before we started BIGG Success. I was a radio DJ. I loved it. I have a passion for radio broadcasting. But I didn’t see any opportunity for growth.

George KruegerI remember, Mary-Lynn, we looked at the financials for your employer. They were facing declining sales. We went and looked at the industry. It had falling sales as well.

Mary-Lynn FosterRight, and this was even before the recession. So the outlook wasn’t positive. I knew I needed to look at options. We arrived at BIGG Success.

George KruegerAnd it’s ironic – now you’re back in radio.

Mary-Lynn FosterYeah, I host my own talk show on 93.5/95.3 Connect FM. It’s broadcast online at But it’s on my own terms. I get to do something I love part-time while I work to make my business grow full-time.

It’s like having your cake and eating it too. Three rights don’t make a wrong. In fact, find a growing occupation in a growth company that’s in a growth industry and you’ll be well on your way to BIGG success!

Considering a career change? Need help finding your opportunity? Maybe we can help.

Here’s something that never changes. We’re so grateful that you spent some of your time with us today.

Next time, we’ll talk about how to break the boundaries that keep you from reaching BIGG success. Until then, here’s to your BIGG success!

The Biggest Failure of All is Silent

The biggest failure of all is silent | BIGG SuccessIt’s kind of funny in an ironic sense. Yet it is so very sad.

The biggest failure of all is silent.

You can experience this failure and never even realize it.

Day after day, same old same old.

The drudgery. A life of ho-hum.

Breathing, but not living.

Sure, you’re satisfied. But you’re not happy.

Because you choose to do nothing.

Doing nothing – the biggest failure of all.

You may argue with that last statement.

You didn’t choose to do nothing.

To some extent, you’re right.

You didn’t actively choose to do nothing.

It just happened.

But deep down inside, you know that you let it happen.

By not rocking the boat. By settling for the status quo.

By not sticking your neck out. By not trying.

By being so afraid of failure that failure is the only possible outcome.

By doing all these things passively, you actively choose to fail.

You will never know the potential within you.

You will never see the impact that you could have made.

You will never experience the elation of living your passion.

And we all suffer.

We’ll never know how great you could have been either.

BIGG success if life on your own terms.

Today, you can choose to exist or you can choose to live.

You can change careers.

You can start your own small business.

You can do anything you want to do.

You just have to choose to do something.

Sure, it’s scary.

Sure, it’s not easy.

Maybe we can help.

Take It to the Next Level in Your Career

the next level in your career | BIGG SuccessWhat would you do if you positively knew you would not fail?

Our last post was directed to people who would choose a career change. In this post, we’ll focus on people who would not change careers.

As a BIGG goal-getter, you may be satisfied with your work but you want to take it to the next level.

Let’s “reverse entrepreneur” this process. Ask yourself: Why aren’t you at the next level already?

It may be that you don’t want it badly enough. It may be that you’re not willing to pay the price to reach it. But for BIGG goal-getters, it generally comes down to one of three things:

What you know

You may feel like you need some education. It may be formal education or, more likely, it is some sort of certification or continuing education within your industry. What’s holding you back? Go and get it. Remember the hardest part is getting started.

Who you know

You may not know a “critical somebody” who can help you get to the next level. Here’s the good news: chances are someone you already know can connect you with them. Just let the people in your network know who you want to meet. Don’t be afraid to ask them to help.

In many cases, there’s a mental block. You’re scared – scared to take a risk, scared of failing, scared of being embarrassed. Deep down, you may even be afraid of “outsucceeding” your friends. This is often the real source of the mental block.

Now here’s how you get to the next level:

Step 1 – Determine the source from the list above

Do an honest assessment. Talk to people close to you. Reach out to trusted advisors. Do some real soul-searching.

It may be a combination of the two or even all three of the above items. The key is to identify all the things that are holding you back. Then you’re ready for the next step.

Step 2 – Write down your goal

Get it out of your head. Write it down and post it in a place where you will see it every day. Read it out loud in the morning. Repeat this again right before you go to bed.

Find pictures that represent what reaching this goal will mean to you. Post these pictures where you will see them frequently. This step helps you make the intangible goal more tangible by making it visual. The repetition helps seal it in your brain.

Step 3 – Set milestones

Now that you have your BIGG goal, create the stepping stones. Write down the steps you will take to reach your goal. Be sure to include a due date for each step.

Pick out a reward for reaching each milestone. You may even make each reward progressively bigger as you get closer to your ultimate goal. Put up pictures of your reward with the due date so you keep it ever present in your mind.

You may also use a calendar. Put a number on each day to represent how long you have until the due date for your next milestone. Make an “x” as each day passes to help you keep your sense of urgency.

Step 4 – GO!

Nothing happens until you take action. So GO…BIGG success is waiting for you!

One Career Path Leads to Another

tutors-on-tv.jpgToday on The Bigg Success Show, we did another installment of Tutors on TV. We love the sound effect so much we had to bring it out again!

marylynnWho ever said you can’t learn anything from watching television? Today, we’ll pull out a syndicated show. We recently caught the Waterworks episode of The Cosby Show. In this episode, Cliff (played by Bill Cosby) decided to fix the tile in the bathroom.

georgeWhen I was in the plumbing business, it seemed like just about every time someone called after trying to fix something themselves, it turned out to be more expensive than if they had just called us in the first place!

Well, that’s exactly what happened! Cliff got in over his head. Clair (Cliff’s wife) and Theo (their son) began calling plumbers (without Cliff’s knowledge). In the midst of it, Sondra (their oldest daughter) called Clair, who filled her in on what was going on.

Sondra told Clair about some friends from college who had their own plumbing business. Cliff was perplexed – why would someone with a good degree from a good college become a plumber?

Jennifer (the head of the crew) said that trying something new isn’t throwing your field away. She went on to give some examples:

  • Gauguin was a stock broker before he became a painter.
  • Sir Arthur Conan Doyle – was a doctor before creating his unforgettable character, Sherlock Holmes.
  • Shirley Chisholm had a Master’s in Elementary Education before she became a Congresswoman.
  • Gandhi studied law before he became … well, Gandhi.

Is there a profession lying within you just waiting to get out?

For many people, the second time’s a charm. The second career is the one that leads them to bigg success.

So if you find yourself considering a career change, whether voluntarily or involuntarily, here are a few tips:

You are the entrepreneur of your life. One of the things that entrepreneurs understand is that change means opportunity. So don’t resist change, welcome it. Better yet, look for it.

Next, redefine yourself. Bigg success is life on your own terms. Don’t define yourself too narrowly. Broaden your terms to find your bigg opportunity.

For example, if you’re in sales, do you sell tangibles or intangibles? No matter which one it is, there are a lot of occupations and industries to which your skills are transferable.

You’re still going to the same destination. You’re just going to ride in a different vehicle. For example – if you find yourself out of work, think about what you loved about your last job? What were you really good at? Look for those same things in your next career.

Remember that where there’s growth, there’s opportunity. A rising tide lifts all boats, as the saying goes. So look for industries or sectors where the number of jobs is expected to rise in the years ahead. The Bureau of Labor Statistics is a great place to research that.

You may find yourself going through a difficult time. You may find yourself longing for something better.

Think about Gauguin, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Shirley Chisholm and Gandhi. They found the second time was a charm.

Take all that you’ve learned about yourself and look for your opportunity for bigg success.
