The 5 Elements of Bigg Success

life on your own termsLast time, we talked about how the words we use, the terms, can provide fuel for our bigg success. It’s all part of the definition of bigg success. Bigg success is life on your own terms.

___

___

As we conducted our research, we discovered five core elements that propel people to bigg success or that keep us from living our lives on our own terms.

The 5 elements are money, time, growth, work, and play.

They operate independently and interdependently all the time.

Money

As we surveyed people, some of the issues regarding money were:

  • not making enough
  • spending too much
  • not saving enough
  • not knowing how to invest it

Time

We can get more money, but we can’t get more time. So time is our most precious resource.

Some of the issues we’ve heard in regards to time include:

  • not knowing how to prioritize
  • being too stretched between work and home
  • wishing there was more time for a certain activity
  • a to-do list that just keeps growing

Growth

Growth is vital to becoming the entrepreneur of our own lives. As we talked about this with people, we found that fear often holds us back because bigg success often forces us out of our comfort zones.

We also heard about challenges with certain essential skills – not the type of skills we learn in school – but the soft skills that are crucial in the 21st century economy.

Work

This is one of the most important decisions we make. Yet it’s definitely not a once-in-a-lifetime decision any longer. To be a bigg success, we must constantly evaluate our situation to see if a career change makes sense.

One of the most critical choices we make is whether we choose to work for ourselves or for someone else. We are the entrepreneurs of our own lives. But do you want to be an entrepreneur in the traditional sense of the term as well?

We obviously face a lot of challenges here as we learned from our research. Some examples:

  • How do I know if I need to change jobs or think about a career change?
  • Am I ready to start my own business?
  • What do I do if I’m really unhappy where I’m at?
  • How do I make money doing what I love?

Play

Play helps us build vital relationships. It also provides the experiences that make our lives whole.

Many people don’t achieve bigg success quite simply because they don’t play enough! All work and no play, you know! It not only makes us dull, it dulls us.

Another challenge with play is finding time for just ourselves as individuals as well as the people that we care about.

___

You can’t have one without the other (four)

What we love about these five elements is how they work interdependently.

Money and time – the two resources we all have.

Work and play – the expressions of who we are.

Growth – the element that links it all together to drive us to bigg success.

We spend time at work to make money so we can afford to play. But if we spend too much time at work, we don’t have time to play! We may spend money to get more time, or we may have to spend more time doing something we’d rather not do because we don’t have the money. With a little growth, we could make that money so could spend more time doing what we want.

Back to the future

The idea behind these five elements and how they work together is the well from which we’ll be drawing for upcoming posts. We’ll focus on the challenges we all face and the opportunities we have to live life on our own terms.

So what does life on your own terms mean to you? What challenges are you facing right now in your quest for bigg success?

The Bigg Idea Behind Bigg Success

A New Beginning for Bigg Success

budding_spring It’s the first day of spring, a day many of us look forward to every year. It represents transition from winter to summer, dark to light. We think of new beginnings and new life. It’s the season of growth.

___

___

But spring is also a verb. We spring forward or spring into action. It implies moving forward by leaps and bounds.

Bigg news

We’re happy to say that we have some bigg news to spring on you. We wanted to share it with you, our regular readers, first. We started Bigg Success about one-and-a-third years ago.

We said we were the how-to, can-do place. But we felt the need to refine that description and to simply define bigg success. So we got to work on it. What is bigg success? What does it mean?

About six months ago, we found the answer. So we started researching, studying, and talking with people. We searched for the answer to two questions:

What makes people a bigg success? What keeps people from being a bigg success?

So here we are … the first day of spring. We’re ready to announce a new beginning for Bigg Success. We’re ready for the transition, to share what we’ve learned.

Five shows

We’ll do that next time when we kick off the first of five shows that will help you really understand what bigg success means.

What are the elements of bigg success?

How do you get from where you are now to where you want to be – from success to bigg success?

How do you keep the risk of moving to this new level as low as possible?

What challenges can you expect to face? How do you overcome them?

How can you make it all work together so you’re not constantly pulled between your personal and professional lives?

Still the same

Our knowledge has sprung forward. We have so much we want to share with you and we’re looking forward to it. But we do want to reassure you …

We’ll still do five shows a week.

We’ll still offer a lesson and, hopefully, a laugh in five minutes or so.

We’re still all about personal and professional development.

What’s new is a framework for Bigg Success to help you build your bigg success even faster!

Sharing leads to bigg success

Because we still firmly believe that all of us know more than any of us, we hope you will bring your insights so we can all benefit. We encourage you to get in on the conversation and share both what you know and what you want to know.

If just one person benefits from every show, then Bigg Success is a bigg success. If we work together as a community, we can help each other reach bigg success even faster!

Please check in next time as we kick off this series of five shows. Until then, here’s to your bigg success!

Looking Over a Four-Leaf Clover

clover Happy St. Patrick’s Day everybody! We hope you’re having a good one. We have to celebrate today with song!

___

___

___

marylynn
Does that mean you’re going to sing, George?

___

___

georgeI hope not. We want our audience to keep listening. I only put you through that torture, Mary-Lynn.

___

We do like music here at Bigg Success as you may have noticed by all the songs and bands we talk about.

___

marylynn
I’m more of a melody person and George is the lyrics guy.

___

With it being St. Patrick’s Day, we started thinking about the song, I’m Looking Over a Four-Leaf Clover. What a happy little jingle, written all the way back in 1927 but, ironically, overlooked until Art Mooney popularized it in 1948.

___

georgeThe song opens, “I’m looking over a four-leaf clover that I overlooked before.” And in the lyrics … see I am a lyrics guy … are three great lessons.

___

Sunshine + Rain = Roses

The second part of the song goes, “One leaf is sunshine, the second is rain, Third is the roses that grow in the lane.”

___

marylynnThis is the first lesson we see in this wonderful song and it seems particularly appropriate right now as we face tough times. Sometimes the sun shines. I just love sunny days. The sun represents the good times.

___

Up until about a year or so ago, we were living in pretty good times, economically. We often aren’t thankful enough when we’re in the middle of them.

Then it rains. And we’re in the middle of a storm right now. But the thing is – if the sun was always shining, if it never rained – would we really appreciate the sunshine?

It’s the change of weather that makes weather more interesting. It’s the change in circumstances that makes life more interesting. And boy, are they interesting right now or what!

This part of the song wraps up talking about the roses that grow in the lane. And here’s where the lesson comes in. Without the sunshine and the rain, those roses wouldn’t grow. Without the rain, those roses wouldn’t bloom into their full beauty.

So it is with us. It takes sunshine and rain, good times and bad, for us to reach our full potential. Because in the down times, when the challenges may be the greatest, we gain wisdom, strength, and skills that we would never have otherwise. And those things carry us to greater heights than we could have ever imagined when the good times come.

The fourth leaf

The song continues, “No need explaining, the one remaining is somebody I adore.” St. Patrick’s Day is all about luck. The fourth leaf of a four-leaf clover is often associated with luck. And how lucky we are if we have someone to adore! That’s the second lesson from this song.

Isn’t it interesting that the song doesn’t talk about having somebody who adores us? It’s showing us that to give our love, our adoration, is so very important. Because we can’t really love someone else fully unless we love ourselves enough to have some love to give, some extra capacity. Then we can experience the joy of giving love.

Let’s not overlook the third lesson

Believe it or not, that’s the whole song … it’s like the whole song is a chorus.

So you may be saying, “Wait a minute. They said there were three lessons in this song and so far they’ve only talked about two of them.”

Good catch. The third lesson is in the first part of the song. “I’m looking over a four-leaf clover that I overlooked before.”

Since we view four-leaf clovers as a sign of good luck to come, we wonder …

How often do we overlook the good luck that is right in front of our faces?

We have wonderful people in our lives. We have the basic necessities we need. We have so much and we often fail to stop and be thankful for it. Yes, today is a day to realize how lucky we are. Our stocks and the value of our houses may be down. But we shouldn’t overlook how fortunate we are.

We feel fortunate that you spent time with us today. Thank you so much.

Critical Keys to Business Success – Part 1

success Today on The Bigg Success Show, we were honored to have Deb Neuman as our guest. Deb is the host of the Back to Business Radio Show, talk radio for small business owners on WVOM, the Voice of Maine News Talk Network. Deb was recently named Small Business Journalist of the Year for Maine and New England by the U.S. Small Business Administration.

___

___

Passion

___

marylynnDeb, you've talked with thousands of entrepreneurs and you've found some critical keys to business success and they all start with “P”. Your first one is Passion. You have to love what you do.

___

___

debIt’s not unlike a relationship; it’s not unlike love. You have to be passionate about the person that you commit your time and your life to. It certainly doesn’t mean that you’re going to like them every second. Similar to operating a small business, you don’t have to love every part of it. A personal example of that … I used to own an inn in Bar Harbor, Maine and I cleaned more toilets in five years of inn ownership than most people would ever want to do in a lifetime. So that wasn’t my favorite part, but I was certainly passionate about my business as a whole and I was willing to clean the toilets to make it work.

___

___

georgeWhen you’re on the outside looking in, Deb, do you think there’s a tendency to romanticize that vision of what it means to own your business? I think a lot of people who have never done it before are disappointed that it’s not easy. It is hard, so you really do have to love it, but not romanticize it.

___

Exactly. I always suggest that if you do have a romantic dream of owning an inn, for example, or operating a restaurant, that you go and work in one for a while. Really experience it; really find out what it’s going to take. Of course, it’s different when it’s yours, but you have to understand what the job entails.

___

marylynnYeah, you definitely have to make sure you know what you’re getting into. That you see that toilet!

___

Product

___

george
Moving on to your next “P” for business success – it is Product.

___

___

debYou have to have a product or service that people will actually pay you money for. Oftentimes, I’ve seen entrepreneurs romanticize their idea for a product or a service or an invention even. They just think it’s the greatest thing … that everyone will want this. They’re in love with it, but they really haven’t tested the market to make sure that other people will be as passionate about it as they are. And that these people will actually pay money for it because that is really a key.

___

___

marylynn
Yes, because there are bills to pay!

___

___

debThere are … that’s the reality! It’s worth it to take the time to do the market research to be as certain as you possibly can be that there is a market for your product or service.

___

Persistence

___

george
Next on your list, Deb, is Persistence.

___

___

debThis is so important. When you start a business or when you’re trying to grow a business, things often can become challenging. They may not go the way that you want. Certain things may take longer than you hoped. You just have to persist through those challenging times. But you need to know when to cut your losses. It certainly doesn’t mean that you should just keep going and going and going if things aren’t going well. Sometimes you just have to say, “This isn’t working.”

___

___

marylynnGeorge just worked with an entrepreneur who had to do that. She had to call it quits. But what’s interesting is that she has a great attitude. She’s not calling entrepreneurship quits, just that particular business. There was really no place else to go with it. She’s taken the lessons learned and regrouping, but then she’s going to launch another business at some point. I admire that in her.

___

___

debEntrepreneurs are born with that genetic gift, as I call it sometimes. At other times, I call it a curse! We will come back with the next great idea and constantly be creating something. We just take those lessons, good and bad, and apply them to the next great idea.

___

Planning

___

george
And another one of your P’s for business success is planning.

___

___

debPlan! Plan! Plan! You really do have to develop a business plan. If you’re just starting a new business, it’s critical to determine many things, including if a market exists for your product. But also planning has to happen every day and every week and every month. You have to plan the small things out and you also have to plan the big picture. You constantly have to be in planning mode. When you’re the boss, there’s nobody else telling you what needs to get done this week.

___

___

georgeI think that’s one of the bigger challenges for people who just start a business. Not having that person to answer to. It could be a coach. In my former businesses, I met with one of my partners every week to make sure that he kept me on track. We try to do that with our coaches. You need that outside person to keep you focused and working on what you say you need to work on.

These People Just Do Not Get It

optimists There is a group of people that most people just don’t understand. They face the same problems we all face …

… but they just don’t get it. They don’t get how bad these problems are this time around.

___

___

When they listen to the news, it’s the same news we all hear.

But they just don’t get it … how bad the news really is.

They have the same concerns for themselves and their families that we all have. But there is one difference between this group and the majority of people …

They think their lives are going to get better this year! The future is bright. So bright, they probably wear shades! They think the economy will turn around.

And there’s a startling number of Americans who think this way. In fact, according to a recent survey, more than one-third of all Americans are in this group. And only one out of five people said they worry about the economy on a daily basis.

Are they tuning out?

So what do you think? Are these people who think their personal situation will improve this year nuts? Or do you think they’re onto something? Or maybe they’re on something?

Here’s what they may not be on … they may not be reading, watching, or listening to the news! Bad news does seem to be good news to the news media. We’ve spoken with a large number of people over the last month or so who say they’ve tuned out the news.

Sometimes that’s a good coping mechanism. If you’re tired of hearing gloom and doom, it might be more productive to focus on something more positive.

Challenge spells opportunity

We put ourselves in this group of optimistic people. We think things will get better this year. That’s not to say we won’t still see some hiccups, but it appears that there is significant strength just below the surface.

While we face some major challenges right now, that spells opportunity for bigg goal-getters. But don’t expect to win a spelling bee if you spell it that way!

Getting real

The article we mentioned earlier cites some of the benefits of being an optimist. On average, optimists get sick less, live longer, and appear to have a higher quality of life.

This is consistent with other research we’ve seen on the benefits of being an optimist. Seeing the glass half-full does seem to pay off. But while it’s important to look for the silver lining in any dark cloud, and we don’t think it pays to be pessimistic, we also think that we should be realistic.

We have to sort through all the information in front of us to try to determine what the objective reality is. To make sure that our perceptions aren’t creating a bias as we look at a particular situation.

Because we’re more likely to make mistakes if we’re overly optimistic. We’ll see opportunities that aren’t really there. And unfortunately, we must admit that we’re speaking from experience here.

But pessimists miss out on opportunities because they either don’t see it or they don’t act on what they see.

Bigg goal-getters are an optimistic group. While one-third of the people in this survey said they think things will get better this year, we bet that the overwhelming majority of our community would put themselves in that category.

And that’s a good thing … as long as we filter our optimism with a healthy dose of realism. Be positively real. That’s the recipe for bigg success!
