Are You Smart Enough to Say It Simply?

Today, we’ll share a recent experience with an intern and a doctor. The intern explained what was going on, and we understood almost none of it. He only used medical terms. When we questioned him, he compounded it with even more technical words. A great guy, but he didn’t communicate effectively.

Then we talked to the doctor. The doctor explained everything in human terms so we fully understood. Sure, she used technical terms, but she quickly explained what they meant in layman’s language.

She was smart enough to say it simply!

So from that we can only conclude that women are better communicators than men!

Okay, that’s not what we’re saying. It’s not about gender, it’s about these three factors:

#1 – Personal characteristics

Consider two ends of the spectrum – on one end, there are people who lack confidence. On the other end, there are people with ego.

Confidence. These people may be somewhat new to the subject they’re trying to explain so they’re not that sure of themselves yet. They’re uncomfortable talking about it. So they talk about it the way they learned it – in technical terms. It’s a nervous reaction.

Ego. These people are experts and they want you to know just how smart they are. They may even be arrogant. They’re smart, but not smart enough to realize how important it is to clearly communicate with their audience.

#2 – Communication skills
This is about preparation. They know they have a message to relay, but they don’t put any thought into how to relay it. They’re very skilled in their profession, but they don’t know how to communicate with the average Jane or Joe.

#3 – People skills
They’re not able to read the people to whom they’re talking. If they get a blank stare, it doesn’t register that the person doesn’t understand. These people are brilliant in their profession, but they lack the ability to connect with people, especially those outside their profession.

2 tips to say it simply
Here are two questions to ask yourself about your audience before you try to communicate with them:

Question #1 – What is their level of understanding about your subject?
The answer to this question will help you determine how you form your message. If you’re talking to a colleague, you can go crazy with all that jargon you love! If you’re talking to someone outside your profession, keep it simple!

Question #2 – What do they need to know?

If the CliffsNotes version will do, don’t recite the whole book! Determine what’s really important and leave out all the rest. They’ll ask you if they want more.

It’s smart to keep it simple!

Stand Up for Yourself … to Yourself

This may surprise you, but learning how to talk to yourself is a crucial skill in your bigg success. We all engage in self-talk. But is your self-talk productive?

Do you ever say something to yourself that you would never say to anyone else? Things that you know would hurt them? Or make them upset, maybe even angry?

Then, why do you say them to yourself? And why do you let yourself get away with saying them to yourself?

Defend yourself
Don’t allow yourself to talk to yourself any differently than you would talk to someone else. Because you are likely to come to believe anything that you tell yourself if you don’t stand up for yourself to yourself.

Sounds kind of funny, doesn’t it? Stand up for yourself to yourself.

But it’s likely that you let yourself get away with things that you wouldn’t put up with in others. You would respond in any number of ways – from discontinuing the relationship to outright confrontation.

However, you can’t end your relationship with you! So, you have to confront you!

Tell yourself that you won’t put up with that kind of talk. You’re not the type of person who tears people down. You encourage people. You support them. You’re their friend.

You need to extend the same courtesy to yourself!

How to talk to yourself

You need to learn to encourage yourself. You be your best source of support. Your best friend.

Until you learn to give yourself these wonderful things, it will be hard for you to give them to others without draining your reservoir.

So learn to talk to yourself. Learn to rebut negative comments. Learn to freely offer yourself positive affirmations. Talk to yourself like you’re a good friend.

It’s hard to break old habits. But be vigilant in telling yourself that you will succeed. Give yourself credit when you do well. Cut yourself some slack when things don’t go your way. Remind yourself of the lessons you learned so you do better next time because now you’re one step closer to success!

The most important person to learn to talk to is you!

The Confidence Game

If you have owned your own business, you have probably struggled with self-confidence from time to time. You may even relate to and have suggestions for one of our listeners.

We received an e-mail from Beth, who is in the process of starting her own consulting company. She says her problem is that there’s a little voice in her head that keeps pointing out what she doesn’t know. It’s paralyzing her progress, and she would like some advice on how to get past this.

Don’t feel alone, this is a common problem. We congratulate Beth for having the courage to make this move. George has a theory that, as an entrepreneur, the highs are higher and the lows are lower when own your own business. So welcome to the roller coaster!

Here are some tips on how to get past the lows by giving yourself a boost in confidence:

Don’t expect perfection
33 Allow yourself to be human], by setting achievable goals. For instance, many people feel they don’t know the financial side of business. Read books, take a class, or find someone you can team up with. Do what you do well and let others help you so that you can get started and tackle your challenges.

Rebut the cruel inner critic
Counter your negatives with positives. For example, when that little tells you what you don’t know, tell it what you do know. When it tells you why you shouldn’t take a risk, tell it why you should. Focus on what you can do and what you know you will do.

Be Your Best Friend
Friends tell you what you need to hear, but when they do, it’s in a caring way. We help our friends get through tough situations in encouraging ways. So why not offer yourself suggestions in the same manner? Don’t get down on yourself and be critical just because you didn’t do something right or because you don’t know something.

Meditate
It’s important to practice thinking positive. Take a break, think about a task you completed that made you feel confident, and remember how good it felt. When you go to bed, focus on three good things that you did well that day. It’s a great way to end the day, by focusing on what you have accomplished.
