The Logical Way to Rediscover Your Creativity

music-lessonsIn today’s Music Lesson, we want to look at Supertramp’s The Logical Song. It’s about a young adult looking back on his life. He’s lost and he’s trying to understand why. What led him here?

___

___

Learning too much

His education taught him to be “intellectual, cynical”.

And he learned. So well, in fact, that he lost himself. “Please tell me who I am,” he says.

In the process, he became cynical. A certain amount of skepticism is healthy. When it crosses that fine line and turns into cynicism, it’s unhealthy.

Learning the wrong lesson

He says, “Watch what you say or they’ll be calling you a radical, liberal, fanatical, criminal. Won’t you sign up your name? We’d like to feel you’re acceptable, respectable, presentable, a vegetable.”

We wonder … does that mean he’s a couch potato?

Bigg success is life on your own terms. However, the young man in this song has learned that the world doesn’t want you to live your life on your own terms.

Go along to get along.

That’s what we’re taught to do. We’re supposed to fall in line. We’re not supposed to think for ourselves. We shouldn’t be too “out there”. Don’t get “too creative.”

The logical end of creativity

We saw a great article on creativity from Scientific American Mind. In the article, the question was asked, “Why do so few people express creativity?”

Check out the answer by one of the experts:

He said that we all express creativity when we’re young. But by the end of the first grade, very few of us do so.”

That’s what made us think of The Logical Song in the first place. Can you hear it …

“But then they sent me away to teach me how to be sensible, logical, responsible, practical.”

The expert in the article said the reason we lose our creativity is because of socialization. We learn to “stay on task.” We’re told to “stop daydreaming.” “Stop asking silly questions.” The result:

“… the expression of new ideas is largely shut down.”

2 keys to rediscover your creativity and reconnect with yourself

  • Reconnect with your youth

“When I was young, it seemed that life was so wonderful, a miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical.”

Reconnect to your youth to rediscover your creativity. Think about another song – Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World”.

See the wonder in the world. See the miracles around you. See the beauty that is ever present. See the magic as it happens.

View the world like a kid again and marvel.

  • Reconnect to nature

“And all the birds in the trees, well they’d be singing so happily, joyfully, playfully, watching me.”

The first thing that jumped out at us was the very first word – “And”.

This second way to reconnect with yourself and your creativity is an extension of the first way. We must first get in touch with our child-like nature; then we can reconnect with nature.

Connect with nature personally. The young man in the song doesn’t just marvel at the birds singing. He hears them singing to him!

Of course, he turned into a radical!

Experts say creativity will be an increasingly valuable skill in the years ahead. There are a lot of opportunities to create the life you dream of living. Rediscover your creativity for bigg success!

Getting to Know You – Part 1

personalitytype_logoToday on The Bigg Success Show we visited with Paul D. Tieger. Paul is the author of the million copy best-selling book “Do What You Are” along with four other books. He is an internationally recognized expert on personality type and has created a personality assessment, Personality Type, which has been rated “extremely” or “very” helpful by over 40,000 people.

___

___

___

marylynnPaul, we define bigg success as life on your own terms. Knowing who you are is implicit in that definition. There are a lot of personality tests. Why yours?

___

___

paul_tiegerYou’re right. There are a lot of personality tests and I think they all try to do the same thing. The one that we’ve developed is the gold standard. It’s based on the Young – Myers model of personality type that a lot of people know about. Our test really identifies the key aspects that are critical to finding work that they’ll find intrinsically satisfying and being able to succeed in those jobs based on the insights they get on their personality type.

___

___

georgeI have to tell you, Paul. I took your free test. It’s only four questions. It took me about five minutes. It sounds easy, but I may have failed!

___

___

paul_tieger
Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! You can’t fail a personality test!

___

___

georgeI marked “not confident” on two of the four questions, which meant I got more information about that particular aspect. It’s fantastic. But, for instance, I ended up saying I was an introvert. But everybody I talk to says that I’m an extrovert. When I look at the descriptions you have, which were very helpful, it seems like I’m about fifty -fifty.

___

___

paul_tiegerHere’s the thing. There’s no psychological instrument that is 100 percent accurate. That’s why you have that cool little drop down box when you’re “not confident” that helps you figure it out. Nobody is exclusively an extrovert or an introvert, but everybody is primarily one or the other. Sometimes it takes a little digging. What happens when you take this personality assessment is that you come up with a personality profile. If it turns out that it doesn’t hit the nail on the head, then you can look at other profiles. It’s really rare that a person has to do this more than two times to find their true type.

___

marylynnI found out that I’m an “ESFP” which means I’m an Extrovert, Sensor, Feeler, and Perceiver. It says that only four to nine percent of the population is this type of person. I’ve always felt that I was different and this just verified it for me!

___

___

paul_tiegerThere are sixteen different personality types. Every type has its strengths and its blind spots. Every person is unique. You can be in a room with a hundred other ESFPs and you’ll have a lot in common. You’ll have a great time because ESFPs do like to have a good time.

___

___

marylynn
That’s me!

___

___

paul_tiegerBut you’re all different – different backgrounds, parents, experiences. You live in different parts of the country. It’s a very individualized thing, but learning about your type is really your home base. It’s the essence of who you are. For ESFPs, these are people who really live in the moment. They’re very resourceful. They like to enjoy what they’re doing. They’re very social people. They like to take care of other people and make sure everybody gets what they need.

___

___

marylynn
Going back to what George was saying, I also have some introverted qualities but you’ve already answered that when you said that we all are introverts and extroverts.

___

___

paul_tiegerIt’s really a preference. It’s like handedness. Some people are born righties; some people are born lefties. I believe that, after having done this for about 25 years now, people really are born with a personality type preference. You grow and you learn as you get older. But you’re either a righty or a lefty. Let’s say you’re a right-handed person by nature. You can learn to use your left hand if you work at it, but it’s never going to be your natural, default setting. It’s the same thing with personality type. If you’re a sensing type, then you’re a person who’s pretty realistic and practical, sees the details, and focuses on what’s going on in the moment. It doesn’t mean that you have no imagination or that you can’t be creative. It just means that’s not your first mode. Somebody else might be very creative and that’s where they go automatically.

___

___

georgePaul, I write left-handed. Most things I do right-handed. The first ball glove my Dad bought me was a left-handed glove. But I’d take the glove off and throw with my right hand. So, related to personality types, if there are things that you admire about an extroverted personality, is it possible – or is it good – to try to move yourself in that direction?

___

___

paul_tiegerIt’s a good question. I found that the people who are the most successful in any of their endeavors are really the people who have the most balance. That doesn’t mean they’re androgynous – that they’re equally both – because I believe that people have a natural in-born preference for each of these categories. But if you are so extroverted that you have to be with people 24 / 7 – you can’t be alone or you can’t read a book – that’s not good. If you’re so introverted that you can’t look somebody in the eye or you can’t do anything with other people, that’s not good. So fortunately, all of us have a balance but there really is a natural preference from where you get your energy. The key is to understand who you are because that’s really the key to your career satisfaction. Then build on your strengths while being aware of your blind spots so you can compensate for them.

___

___

georgeThat is really helpful. I want to take the test again now, thinking about my natural tendency but also keeping in mind that’s it’s not all I’m going to be.

___

___

paul_tieger
Well, I think your Dad screwed you up with that left-handed glove!

___

george
And that’s just one of the many ways!

Believing is Seeing – Part 2

vision_boards.jpgToday on The Bigg Success Show, we continued chatting with Christine Kane about vision boards. Last time, Christine shared how vision boards helped her make a u-turn in her career. Now she teaches others how to use them through her retreats and coaching programs. Let’s get back to the conversation …

___

___

___

marylynnChristine, you’ve identified three types of vision boards. The first one is the “I Know Exactly What I Want” Vision Board. Who should create that one?

___

___

christine_kaneLeft-brained people who get wigged out a little bit by the whole idea of creativity. When they’re at my retreats, they’re the ones shouting, “Who has a picture of an Audi A3?” They’ll put a black dog on there. When you’re in this place – you want a new house or a new job, you want to eat healthy food – you go into the magazines and look for those images. It’s a great way to do it. Some people just throw it up there and that board is done in an hour-and-a-half.

___

___

george
The second one you’ve identified is the “Opening and Allowing” Vision Board.

___

___

christine_kaneThis is my favorite. As I said before, at my retreats, the whole first day is about intention. So women are getting clear on what they want more of. The second day we’re doing all those obstacles. By the time they sit down to do their vision board, they are just ready to speak to their soul – their deeper and wiser self. We know that still part of us. So you go through the magazines really slowly. You find yourself getting surprised at this image or that image. Even when I picked out that image of Celine Dion’s stage, I didn’t sort through magazines trying to find the perfect stage. I looked at it and thought, “Oh, that’s totally the feeling I want.” Some people will go, “Oh I love that car. Wow, I never realized I wanted a Prius but I just realized this speaks to me.” This puts you in touch with a deeper part of yourself. A lot of times our mental imaginings and our egos can run the show and think they know exactly what they want. A lot of times they lead us down paths that aren’t in alignment with who we really are. So the Opening and Allowing board is where you sit down and let the pictures come to you. Then you arrange them. It’s a softer process. Not everyone wants to do it this way. It’s great at my retreats because they’ve really had the time to get clear before we go for that.

___

___

marylynn
I want to do that board. I’m ready!

___

___

christine_kane
I love this board. It’s how I live my life!

___

___

marylynn
Let’s talk about the third type. Christine, you call it the “Theme” Vision Board.

___

___

christine_kaneYeah, like I’ve said, I do this on New Year’s Day. “Here’s my year, my 2009.” Birthdays are a good time to do that. What is the year ahead? The other thing would be if you want a different job or a new place to live or whatever. You make the entire board about that thing. Your marriage. Your family. It’s a great thing to do with anything in your life. You can apply both of the mindsets for the two other boards to this board.

___

What is a vision board?

___

marylynnOne of my favorite girlie magazines is First magazine. So, when I saw your picture in the March 30 issue, I said to George, “Look, Christine is featured.” You were talking about how vision boards have helped you achieve your dreams. So, let’s start with, what is a vision board?

___

___

christine_kaneVision boards got really popular after The Secret. I’ve been doing them forever. In the late 90s, a friend of mine was trying to change her career around. I was trying to uplevel my career in music. So the two of us and another friend did them. I ended up getting the house I put on my vision board. It was completely effortless. Then I noticed that, after my shows, I’d end up having a circle of women, and sometimes men, around me asking how to follow their dreams. So I started doing women’s retreats to answer that call. The first day we work on intention. The second day we look at what blocks our intention – the little patterns that come up. So by now they’re deeply connected with who they are, what they want and all their old patterns. After that, we do vision boards. We just take poster board and a huge stack of magazines – I have hundreds of them at these retreats. They grab photos that speak to them. Sometimes they speak to your soul and you don’t know why. Sometimes they are totally in alignment with what you want, like a new house or a new car. I tell them not to get uptight about it. You tend to know which image is right for you. I don’t give huge instructions because I think our creative side – that’s my songwriter side – knows where you’re going to put those images and how you’re going to lay out that board. I like to have people put a picture of themselves in the middle of it. Then you put that board above the desk in your office, your walk-in closet, in your bedroom behind the door. You just let those images be with you every day. The idea behind it is you’re welcoming in new images from a new paradigm that you want to create. That’s the power of our subconscious. As a creative person who has created a songwriting career out of nothing, I believe in the power of these kinds of tools. I don’t put everything on the idea of a vision board, but it’s one of the many ways that we can create better things in our life.

Blocking out mental blocks

___

marylynnChristine, let me go back to something you said early on – we have those “blocks.” As you were creating your vision board to help you take your career to a new level, what was a block that you recognized and what was something you put on your vision board to get past that block?

___

___

christine_kaneThat’s a really great question. You have to take this to your own career. For my career, there’s a point where every songwriter, artist, or entrepreneur gets to where they have let the original people who showed them the ropes give them all the “here’s how it is in your business” or “here’s the only way you’ll be able to do it.” I had that and a lot of it was very negative. I was playing at bars. Sometimes I was at a festival playing on a rickety stand. I truly had this mindset that it was the best I could get. I was lucky to be an artist. I sat down by myself to do my vision board on New Year’s Day, which I do every year. Now this was not my first vision board; this was when I had been doing them and really got it. I pulled out the image of Celine Dion on stage in Vegas.

___

___

marylynn
That was quite a stage!

___

___

christine_kaneIt didn’t mean that I wanted to be Celine Dion because I don’t. It represented that I wanted to start playing on stages that are substantial, that didn’t smell like spilled beer, that weren’t a pile of wood thrown together for some make-shift festival that someone put on.

___

___

marylynn
That weren’t rocking!

___

___

christine_kaneExactly! If you’ve ever walked backstage at a great theater, you know what it feels like. You feel those spotlights come on. That image of her stage was the center of my vision board. Literally within six months of doing that board, I got an invitation from a ballet company. They had seen me at a showcase and fallen in love with my music. They choreographed a ballet to my songs. They wanted me to tour with them. The tour lasted for three years. From that point, I was on those stages. We were around the country at performing arts centers. Those spotlights. That strong sturdy stage. After that, a lot of the performing arts centers that I went to with the ballet company had me back as a solo artist. So my career literally did a u-turn. I got more money. I really got what it felt like to have imagined that thing on my board. It required that I get really deeply in touch with what that picture represented to me. It wasn’t just, “Hey I want to be Celine Dion and do cool things.” It was, “What does this stage mean to me?” It means no longer saying “yes” to anything that is less than this image. I really got what that felt like inside of my body.

___

Don’t know what you want? Do you know what you don’t want?

___

georgeThat’s such a great story, Christine. This was part of the article from First magazine. And by the way, may I say that I’m man enough to read Mary-Lynn’s girlie magazine! One of the things that jumped out at me reading that, and now hearing it again, is that sometimes we get to what we want by, first, knowing what we don’t want.

___

___

christine_kaneOh yeah. You know it’s funny – my retreats have become so popular that I created an online course and then it turned into a coaching program called The Uplevel Your Life Mastery Program. It’s a seven-week program. One of the exercises in the first week is about getting in touch with what you want. So many people say they don’t know what they want. So we start with writing down what they don’t want. That is a perfectly valid place to start. That’s what has to start turning around. That awareness that I didn’t want to play at places where people were drinking. That was my first thing.

Free Food and Fun with Friends

clown.jpgBigg success is life on your own terms. There are five elements of bigg success – money, time, growth, work and play. Today we’ll focus on play.

As the song says, “Girls just want to have fun.” So do bigg girls and bigg boys.

___

___

Spending time without spending money

One of the greatest joys in life is spending time with close friends. These days we’re being careful with our money which can sometimes create a challenge in spending time with friends.

For example, do you stay in or go out? If you go out, are you excluding some friends by going to a certain restaurant or choosing a specific activity? One or more of your friends may not be able to afford it.

The great thing about spending time with friends is that you don’t have to spend any money at all if you don’t want. It’s about spending time together.

A pantry potluck

One of our friends had a great idea. You can have some fun with friends and clean out clutter – in your cabinets and freezer – without spending any money. How’s that for a killer combination?

Organize a “pantry potluck.” Here’s how it works – Plan a date to get together. For your meal, everyone prepares at least one dish from ingredients they already have in their kitchen.

Get creative. Dig deep in your freezer. Check the back of your cabinets.

It’s essentially a free meal for everyone because the money’s already been spent!

___

marylynn
I think it would be hard not to spend money on something new.

___

___

george
I’m not surprised to hear you say that, Mary-Lynn!

___

___

marylynnWell, off the top of my head, I’m just thinking about what we have. Fritos but not even a full bag. Cake mix but no frosting.

___

___

georgeBoy, Mary-Lynn, I can tell I do most of the cooking around here. I think we have a lot of things that would be perfect for a pantry potluck.

___

___

marylynnSo we checked out our freezer. We have a bag of French fries but, just as I suspected, there was only about a third left.

___

___

georgeYeah, but we also have a full bag of meatballs. They would be great for a potluck. And there’s a lot of chicken. In our cabinets, there’s a cream of mushroom soup can – that would be good with the meatballs. Oh, and cream of chicken and herb soup – I’m thinking chicken casserole of some sort. There’s marinara sauce so we could do the meatballs two ways.

___

___

marylynnI also see a can of tuna and some tuna helper. I guess you were right, George. We do have a lot of options for the pantry potluck.

___

___

georgeSince Mary-Lynn was worried about frosting for the cake, I remembered that we had cream cheese in the refrigerator. So we looked up a recipe for cream cheese frosting; it turns out that we have everything we need – butter, vanilla, and powdered sugar.

___

___

marylynnI’ve never made cream cheese frosting before. I sure hope our friends don’t mind being the guinea pigs!

___

Ramp it up

Now here’s the bigg idea. If you want to ramp up the fun even more, have a contest. You may vote on the most original dish, the tastiest, the most home-made or any other category you might like.

You can even up the ante by choosing a theme and asking everyone to bring a dish that goes along with that theme. Now your creativity will get pushed even more but it might make it more fun.

That’s the whole reason we’re talking about this. You can have fun with your friends, clear out clutter and not spend any money all while improving creativity skills. That’s a lot of synergy. That’s bigg success!

What’s in your pantry now that you could take to a potluck?
