Entrepreneurs need to know more than ever. But when it comes to marketing yourself and delivering an exceptional experience to your customers, every entrepreneur must know two things: know your expertise and know experts.

Know your expertise

First, every entrepreneur needs to know your expertise. It may be what you know or what you can do.

There’s a subject which you know more about or a skill which you can perform better than 99% of the people on the planet.

It seems like a high standard – to say you’re in the top 1% in knowledge or skill. But it really isn’t, especially if you practiced a craft for awhile.

The fact is: Most people don’t know much about most things. Most people can’t do most things well.

That’s not an insult – it’s just recognizing reality. The world is complex. No one can master everything. So focus on mastering one thing.

What is that for you?

Stated differently, what are you known for? Or want to be know for?

This is the key – not just knowing your expertise, but being known for your expertise.

When you know your expertise and stick to it, you can serve your customers like no one else. You can rise above your competitors.

But you can’t stop there – as one of our coaches often reminds us:

There are plenty of undiscovered geniuses
but there are no undiscovered marketers!

So you know what you’re an expert at. Make sure others know it too. Then you can help more people in that way only you can. Don’t they deserve it?

We’re hitting at one of the reasons why every business owner, professional and startup entrepreneur needs a brand today – so you become the go-to guy or gal.

Knowing your expertise is part of forming your brand, which helps you find your focus and stay focused. You have boundaries. You know how you can help.

Know experts

Just as importantly, you know when you can’t help. In those cases, every entrepreneur needs to know experts.

Obviously, experts can help you build your business. That’s why we constantly work with one or more coaches.

But as an entrepreneur, you need to know experts who can help your customers with services related to yours.

You’re the pro in your area. They’re the pros in their spaces. You and your team do your thing; they do theirs with their team. It’s a team of teams.

You serve your respective customers better, so they win. You and your fellow experts both make more money, more dependably. So everybody wins. That’s BIGG success!

When it comes to BIGG success, the good news is you only have to get it right once.

But there are some obvious ways to sabotage your success – both before and after – you’ve achieved it.

We’ll share ten of them today:

1) Sabotage your success by expending energy needlessly
Your energy is precious. You need all you can muster for your BIGG important things.

We call those BITs. BITs are tasks and projects which lead to your ultimate goal. Everything else is a needless expenditure of energy.

2) Take unnecessary risk and you’re sure to sabotage your success
The most successful entrepreneurs are not risk lovers. They are incredible risk managers.

Don’t take any risk you don’t absolutely have to. Find a way to mitigate it or eliminate it altogether. Then you can move forward with no fear of loss.

3) You sabotage your success when you allow yourself to get distracted
Time management is great. But even more important today is attention management. Find your focus and stay focused on it.

4) Don’t stay disciplined and you’ll sabotage your success
How well you do at work has a lot to do with what you do or don’t do after work. Temptations will always be there. They’re fun.

But you have to keep your end goal in mind. The price of BIGG success may be to say “no” to things you would love to say “yes” to.

5) You’ll sabotage your success if you worry about yesterday or tomorrow, but not today
Don’t waste a single second on what you wished you had done yesterday. And ditto for tomorrow.

Focus exclusively on today – it’s a fleeting opportunity to make a BIGG impact.

6) Live on past success and you’ll sabotage your success
Winners become losers because they focus on the last win rather than the next one.

When you win, celebrate for a time. Then focus exclusively on what you need to do to move forward again.

7) You’ll sabotage your success if your confidence turns to cockiness
The difference between the two is a fine line. Success breeds confidence.

It should walk hand-in-hand with humility and gratefulness. Then you’ll have the proper mindset to get to the next level of success.

8) Forget what you don’t know and you’ll sabotage your success
This is closely related to the last point but deserves explicit recognition. It’s easy to get caught up in your success. It’s easy to think you know more than you do.

Keep the proper perspective or you’ll take unnecessary risks. See Point 2.

9) You’ll sabotage your success if you stop being hungry
The best state of mind is happy, but not content. Stay hungry.

No matter how much success you achieve, put yourself to the edge so you continue learning.

10) Manage money improperly to sabotage your success
This works two ways – hoard it and you’ll miss out on a whole lot of happiness OR spend it frivolously and risk losing what you worked so hard to build up.

As your wealth grows, invest in professional advisors who can help you make the most of it.

As we talk with startup entrepreneurs and business owners, we hear a common theme:

They’re so overwhelmed they don’t know what to do!

Not so much with workload – although that’s often the case as well – but with brain overload.

They have too many ideas. They have too many options. They don’t know where to start.

So what do you do if you don’t know what to do?

Ask the Navy!

The Navy Flight Manual tells pilots to do five things when they’re lost. Let’s look at them from an entrepreneur’s point-of-view.

The first thing you should do when you don’t know what to do is confess. Admit to yourself that you are lost.

And don’t feel bad about it. Trust us, you’re not alone. Most of us have been in a place when we didn’t know what to do.

The next thing you should do if you don’t know what to do is climb. You have to get altitude.

Don’t stay mired in the details. Rise above them so you can see the BIGG picture.

Remember what you’re trying to accomplish. Review your BIGG goals.

The third thing to do when you don’t know what to do is conserve. Sometimes you have to slow down to catch up!

Save your fuel, your energy until you can get a sense of direction. Speed without direction leads to nowhere fast!

The fourth thing you should do when you don’t know what to do is communicate. Don’t try to go it alone.

That mush in your head will remain soft and gooey until you get it out. So talk to other people.

But not just any people – people who are like you, BIGG goal-getters. Too many people make the mistake of talking with family and friends.

Yes, they love you. Yes, they want the best for you.

But they’re not you!

They can’t fully understand what you’re going through. So talk with people who’ve been there, done that.

There’s a lot of conversation about the emotional side of finding the right business. But there’s very little help when you really need it – once you’re neck deep in starting and running it.

[Mary-Lynn] BIGG Success is my first entrepreneurial endeavor. We’re a little over five years old now. And I have to tell you – I’ve ridden the entrepreneurial roller coaster.

[George] I’d been in business for years before I ever got up the nerve to talk about this. I asked my sister – who had also been a long-time business owner – about this emotional roller coaster ride. I said, “It seems like the highs are higher, the lows are lower, and there never seems to be any middle ground.” She said, “You know, I’ve never thought about it before but you’re right.”

“I feel so isolated”

So we’ve spent the last few years talking to business owners and entrepreneurs about this phenomenon. Most of them had their own stories to tell about dealing with the emotional side of business. Sometimes we didn’t initiate the conversation.

For example, one startup entrepreneur was so down. You could see it instantly in his body language. He was slouched over. He moved slowly. Frankly, he looked terrible.

He had missed his self-imposed milestones. He was working daylight to dark and beyond. He was exhausted – physically, mentally and emotionally.

As you might imagine, he was ready to quit.

“I just feel so isolated,” he said.

We listened to him. We assured him that we knew how he felt because we’d lived though it ourselves.

Then with a combination of encouragement and business advice, we helped him feel better and get more focused.

We helped him find his next step instead of feeling overwhelmed by all the steps he had to take. We helped him see that he could take that next step.

Now his business is up and running. He has a spring in his step. He’s a new man.

To this day, he still thanks us for that conversation.
