A Story about 1 Father and His 2 Sons with 3 Lessons for All of Us

By Bigg Success Staff

Life Skills

1-2-3

There’s an old story about two boys who had a father who was an alcoholic. They grew into young men.

One son became an alcoholic. “What choice do I have?” he said. “My father is an alcoholic.”

The other son never touched a drop of alcohol. “How could I?” he said. “Look what it did to my father.”

From this simple story, we see three lessons:

We are all role models.

Like it or not, other people look at how we behave and model their lives after us. John Wooden, the great basketball coach, wrote a wonderful poem that goes like this:

A careful man I want to be,
A little fellow follows me;
I do not dare to go astray,
For fear he’ll go the self-same way.

It’s something that we need to keep in mind for all the people we care about and influence.

We can learn from others.
It’s much better to learn a lesson from someone else’s experience than to have to experience it ourselves. And that even applies to our parents. They aren’t perfect either. We can look to them for an example – in some cases it may be a positive one; in others it won’t be. Either way, we can take away direction in how to live our lives.

We all have the power to choose.
We don’t always get to choose what happens to us or around us, but we can choose how we respond.  We can’t control the circumstances, but we have total and complete control over our reaction.

These two sons started in the same place, with the same circumstances. However, they chose completely different paths as a result of their situation.

Hear today's lesson and laugh on The Bigg Success Show.

Abandon Ship!

Yesterday, we said that persistence is the single most important ingredient for your success. If you persist long enough, you’re sure to succeed! However, you have to be smart about it. With that in mind, here are four signs that it’s time to abandon ship!

Internal signs
#1 – It’s affecting your health.
Your health is more important than any career. You may be having anxiety attacks, experiencing constant stress, feeling burned out or fatigued. These are indications that it may be time for a change.

To succeed bigg, you’ll feel stressed from time-to-time. You need to push on, unless it’s affecting your health long-term. NOTHING is worth that. If your long-term health is being affected by what you’re doing, it’s time to abandon ship!

#2 – You’re bored beyond belief.
You’ve been there, done that. Every day feels like a week. It’s harder and harder to get out of bed in the morning. You don’t look forward to work. You feel like you’re stagnating.

The first sign covers your physical health. Here we’re talking about your mental health. When you’re bored to tears, it’s time to abandon ship!

External signs
#3 – There’s no room for growth.
This is related to the second sign. However, in this case, it’s beyond your control. It may be that you’ve been promoted as far as you can go. Perhaps you can’t expect any significant increase in your income. Maybe your company is reaching maturity.

You’ve taken it as far as the circumstances will allow. If there’s little or no opportunity on the horizon, it’s time to abandon ship!

#4 – The trends are bad.
Change happens. It affects your industry – for good or bad. If it’s creating damage, ask yourself

Is it a trend or is it a fad?

Fads are short term – they will come and go. Trends are long-term things that you can’t change. Warren Buffet, the Oracle of Omaha, said, “When management with a reputation for brilliance tackles a business with a reputation for bad economics, it is the reputation of the business that remains intact.”

We don’t doubt that you’re good. But even you can’t buck the trends. If it’s a fad, push on! If it’s a trend that’s devastating your industry, abandon ship!

Have you felt the need to abandon ship? Or maybe you’re considering it now?
Share your experience with us … leave a comment below!

But don’t just jump ship … prepare your life boat first.

Store up provisions.
Find ways to save some money – skip that latte or pack a lunch until you get settled. Set it aside to provide for you and your family.

Don’t forget your life jacket.
This is your support network. Talk to people who will encourage you, weigh in with ideas, and perhaps refer you to good opportunities.

Remember your compass.
Obviously, you need to know that you’re headed in the right direction. Check out these great resources for guidance:

Take your oars.
You don’t want to just float, so grab your oars. These are things you can do to steer you in the right direction – like take a class or get a part-time job in a field you think might be interesting.

Bring your flare gun.
Prepare to market yourself – spruce up your resume and cover letter. Think creatively so you get the attention of the right people.

Our Bigg Quote today comes from George William Curtis.

“It is not the ship so much as the skillful sailing that assures the prosperous voyage.”

You are the captain of your own ship. Usually you will persist and stay with the course. But occasionally, the best thing you can do is to find a new ship and start your journey anew. Bon voyage!

Next time, we’ll answer a question for one of our newsletter subscribers. He wants some tips on wooing potential investors over dinner. We’ll talk about how to be dashing while dining!

Until then, here’s to your bigg success!

Your Potential Power

Today we’ll discuss how to tap into your hidden potential – that powerful force that lies within you. Find ways to bring it to the forefront and you’ll change your life, the life of those you love, and perhaps even the world!

A lot of us tap into our potential, but the real question is this:

Are you tapping into your FULL potential?

If you’re like most of us, you’ve just scratched the surface of what you can do. You want to be all that you can be.

The secret is to expose yourself to expose your potential.

We’re not talking about doing something that will get you arrested! We mean that you should expose yourself to the following four “P’s”:

#1 – Plan
Start with where you want to be. Some time ago, we discussed how to 11 visualize the life you want]. Develop a clear vision of your dream life. A vision so clear in your mind that you FEEL yourself living it, as if it were actually happening right now.

Then look at where you’re at now. Connect the dots – figure out how to get from where you are to where you want to be.

#2 – People
Spend your time with the right people – people who have already done what you want to do or people who are TRYING to do the same thing you are. The common denominator is common experiences.

We recently attended a seminar with a speaker who talked about this very thing. She pays to get coached by mentors who can help her get to the next level. They’ve been where she is; so they can help her get where they are now.

#3 – Programs
We’re talking about media, books, and other resources that are available to you. Of course, we like to think that Bigg Success is your most important source for great information and inspiration. Pat, who is a regular listener, said this:

“I listen to The Bigg Success Show every day on my way to work.
It gets my mojo going.”

Okay, enough shameless self-promotion. The point is there are a lot of great resources out there. One of our favorites is The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch. The only thing we don’t like about Donny’s show is that he spells “bigg” wrong!

#4 – Projects
Tackle a project you’ve never done before. Stretch yourself – get out of your comfort zone.

It may be a project at work. Or a volunteer project. You can always take up a hobby. Or sign up for a class. It may be completely new to you or you may do something where you learn new skills in your specialty.

Think back to your childhood. Was there an activity that used to fascinate you? Why not explore it again. You’ll find that it helps you personally and professionally. It will also help you learn more about your potential.

Our final thought is simply this – TAKE ACTION! Finding your potential is a process. Pick a “P” and go for it!

Our Bigg Quote today is by Wilma Rudolph, the great athlete.

“Never underestimate the power of dreams and the influence
of the human spirit. We are all the same in this notion.
The potential for greatness lives within each of us.”

There is power in your unfulfilled dreams and desires. Only you can find that latent potential within you and do the great things you were born to do.

Next time, we’ll discuss the one ingredient that guarantees your success. Until then, here’s to your bigg success!

Review: True North

By Bigg Success Staff

Bigg Book Review

Good people are hard to find. They’re even harder to keep. People follow leaders who demonstrate passion and purpose. These authentic leaders will have a leg up on other executives in the coming years.

So says Bill George and Peter Sims in their book, True North: Discover Your Authentic Leadership. For George, a professor at Harvard Business School and former CEO of Medtronic, this is a follow-up to Authentic Leadership: Rediscovering the Secrets to Creating Lasting Value. Sims established a class on leadership at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and co-founded an investment firm, Summit Partners.

The authors interviewed 125 executives for this book. These interviews are why we think this book is so interesting. The interviewees talk openly about their challenges, failures, tragedies, and regrets. We think you’ll find these stories fascinating.

The authors help us understand that authentic leaders lead with their heads and their hearts. This helps keep them on course, in spite of pressures and temptations before them.

Leaders are made, not born according to the authors. Made from life experiences where they discover their passion. That provides the motivation they need to effectively lead their organizations. When you combine your passion with your strengths, you find that sweet spot that makes you much more likely to succeed.

The authors also present a 5-step leadership plan:

  • Know yourself.
  • This is the starting point. Discover your strengths and weaknesses. Seek objective feedback from others. Find your passion and your purpose.

  • Practice your values and principles.
  • You have to lead by example. Do what I say, not what I do, doesn’t work anymore. Did it ever? People want to follow authentic people. Leaders who are real. Leaders who live the values and principles that they preach. Every day.

  • Discover what motivates you.
  • The executives they interviewed wanted to make a difference. They enjoyed pushing themselves to their limits. They wanted an occupation congruent with their passion. Getting rich was a by-product of their success, not the driver of it.

  • Build a support team.
  • The world is too complex to go it alone. You have to develop a team. People who complement your strengths, but who share your passion and core values.

  • Create a balanced life.
  • Balance is important, even for busy executives. You must schedule time with family and friends. Make time for yourself – for exercise, a hobby, or whatever catches your fancy. Give back to your community. Balance gives you fresh perspectives that you can bring into your workplace to solve problems.

This book will inspire you and provide insight to help you develop into an authentic leader – the leadership style of this century!

The Greatest Miracle In The World

Today’s blog is inspired by one of our favorite authors, Og Mandino. He was an amazing storyteller. We reviewed his book, 80 The Greatest Miracle In The World],  in our last newsletter.

So what is the greatest miracle in the world? You might be surprised to hear this …

It’s YOU!

Yes, you are the greatest miracle in the world! Maybe you don’t think of yourself as a miracle. Maybe you take yourself for granted.

So let’s look at the evidence. Here’s why you are the greatest miracle in the world:

You have a distinctive genetic code. Your physical make-up is unique to you. Look at your DNA. We learn from crime investigations that it’s uniquely yours. The odds are overwhelmingly against any other human sharing the same DNA.

Your experiences are entirely your own. From your childhood up to the present time, no one else has the exact same set of experiences that you have. Others may have similar experiences, but no one has experienced them in the same way that you have.

Your perceptions are unlike anyone else’s. Based partly on your genetic make-up and on your own experiences, you have a unique perspective on the world. You have a distinct point-of-view. You see things in a slightly different way than anyone else because of how you got to where you are.

Your genes, your experiences, your perceptions. All these ingredients combine to form the single rarest thing on the face of the earth – YOU! In the history of the world, there has never been anyone who is just like you. From now until the end of time, there will never be a single person just like you.

Do you see yourself as the miracle that you are? Let’s see …

Do you value yourself in pennies?
Don’t you know that all of the riches in the world don’t come close to your value?

Do you believe others when they put you down?
Don’t you know that their comments are a reflection of themselves and not you?

Do you tell yourself that you’re not smart enough?
Don’t you know that you have your own unique blend of intelligence?

Do you diminish your talents?
Don’t you realize that you’ve been given unique gifts to share with the world?

Do you think you’re not good enough?
Don’t you know that you’re exactly what the world needs?

Don’t you know that’s why you’re here now? The odds were against, even before you were conceived. But you endured. Because there was a reason … a purpose … a gift only you could give the world.

You are capable of great accomplishments. You have unlimited potential. Only you can do what you’re here to do because you are the greatest miracle in the world.

You need to see yourself for who you are. You need to change how you think about yourself. If you do, you’ll change your world. Then, and only then, can you do what you’re here to do. To change the whole world. For all of us. We’re counting on you!

When you need a reminder of just how special you are, come back to this page. Don’t ever put yourself down again. Don’t ever see yourself as anything less than the miracle that you are.

Who are the greatest miracles in your life? Pass this on to them. And make their day – tell them how special they are to you.

Our quote today is by an unknown author.

“Instead of thinking about what you’re missing,
try thinking about what you have that everyone else is missing.”

You are the greatest miracle in the world! Change the world by showing your unique self.

Next time, we’ll talk about when to say, “No, thanks … return to sender!”

Until then, here’s to your bigg success!
