Stop Being So Happy

Maybe the Rolling Stones were onto something with their song, I Can’t Get No Satisfaction. We say that because a new study shows not getting satisfaction is good!

This study, called The Optimum Level of Well-Being: Can People Be Too Happy?, was recently published in Perspective on Psychological Science. Participants rated their happiness on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the most happy. Not surprisingly, the researchers found that happy people tend to:

  • stay married longer
  • be healthier
  • volunteer more often
  • get more favorable reviews at work
  • make more money

But the researchers also found that people who rated their happiness level at 10 made significantly less money than those with a happiness level of 8 or 9.

So today, we’ll offer three reasons why less happy people make more money.

#1 – Less happy people respond to changes.
If you’re too happy, you don’t adopt new technologies, new strategies, or new approaches. You’re just fine with the way things are! The problem is that things are changing faster than ever. It’s easy to fall behind.

#2 – Less happy people look for an edge.
When you move past what you know to what you don’t know, you grow personally. That’s what makes life meaningful. So they constantly test their limits, and continually improve, because they’re most comfortable on the edge of their comfort zone.

#3 – Less happy people ask, “What’s next?”
When they reach a goal, they celebrate. They should … they’ve earned it! But then, they set another goal. They look for the next highest mountain to climb. The glory comes from being on top, but the challenge of getting there is the fun part!

How do you get your appetite back?
Think back to when you were first starting out in your career. Do you remember how hungry you were? We don’t mean physically hungry, although that may apply, too! We mean hungry for knowledge, for growth, and for opportunity.

Can you go back to that time in your mind? Can you visualize it as if it were happening right now? That’s where you start – 8 visualize it] using ALL of your senses.

Now, with that same sense of hunger, answer this question:

What is one thing that you haven’t already done, but really want to do?

Visualize it, using all your senses. Keep visualizing it until you’re as hungry for this endeavor as you were when you first got started.

Take yourself to another level – for some of you, this may be a level you never thought you would achieve. Congratulations! You’re ready to go for it!

Find Your Fortune Through Promiscuity

Don’t be alarmed – we just thought it was a catchy title. Nothing explicit here!

A lot of very successful entrepreneurs have multiple businesses. So today, we’ll look at starting the “other” business!

Benefits of the other business

#1 – Your Compensation
You have one business now. So you can draw one salary. When you have two businesses, you get two salaries!

Your current business pays for your company car. Why not have two businesses so you can have two cars? And two expense accounts. Two planes! You get the idea!

There may be better ways to do this, but that’s beyond the scope of today’s blog.

# 2 — Diversification
Basic financial theory says you should diversify – don’t put all of your eggs in one basket!

If you have one business, you’re completely subject to the ups and downs of that one business. With two businesses, one may pull the other one up during times of adversity and vice versa.

#3 – Your Wealth
Entrepreneurs have most of their wealth tied up in a single asset, but they typically have more wealth than the average homeowner. So owning a business is a great way to build wealth. Why not double the pleasure and own two?

One reason not to do it
Obviously, there are many reasons NOT to do this, but space doesn’t allow a full discussion. Let’s look at one – how to maximize your opportunity while minimizing your complications.

Ask yourself this question – how much can you grow your existing business? If it’s still significant, stick with what you have. Growth consumes money, so keep it in your existing business to maximize that opportunity.

Why take on the complication of the other business if what you have now is satisfying you?

Borrow a page from bigg business – feed what’s growing. It’s evolutionary. But as its growth winds down, get revolutionary – find the other business!

How to know you’re ready
Let’s assume that you’ve taken your business as far as you can. It’s still a good business, but it’s hit a plateau. There are two sides to knowing if it’s time for you to move on:

  • Your head – Is your baby ready for you to leave?
  • Your heart – Are you ready to leave your baby?

Here’s a great technique to listen to your head and your heart – take an extended vacation!

For you workaholics, this may require baby steps. If you haven’t been on a vacation for awhile, take an extended weekend. Then get away for a week. After that, make it two. Work yourself up to at least a month away.

You’ll find out if you’re emotionally ready to leave. You’ll also learn how your business functions without you. Who calls? Why? What are the problems?

If no one calls, you’re probably ready to go for it. The worst case scenario is that you’ll come back with the knowledge you need to get ready.

Should You Count On Your Counter-Offer

Bigg Challenge:  We received an e-mail from Patrick, who was approached about a job. He met with the prospective employer and accepted their offer. Then he got an unsolicited counter offer when he told his current employer that he was resigning. He wants to know if he should accept it.

Bigg Advice: Congratulations, Patrick! Isn’t it nice to be wanted? It sounds wonderful, but the reality is that it can be quite stressful. We feel the need to preface our comments – we can give you general advice, but only you can decide which offer you should accept.

  • Why did you accept the offer from your prospective new employer?
  • It’s unclear from the e-mail why you wanted to leave. There are many possible reasons why you may have been drawn to your prospective employer’s offer. Was it money? Maybe you were unhappy at your current job – you just hadn’t started actively searching yet. Perhaps the new job seemed like a better opportunity. We’ll assume that if was a combination of these factors.

  • Why did your current employer counter?
  • We can think of two possible explanations for your employer’s counter offer. First, they may be buying time. Perhaps they’re not prepared to do a search now. The timing is bad because of current business volume. There could be any number of reasons for them to buy time. Just be aware of this. Second, they may truly value you. They really don’t want you to go. They’ve invested in you – you’re part of their future plans. It’s hard to judge intentions. Assume the best, but keep the worst in the back of your mind.

  • Get it in writing.
  • Negotiate your counter offer as if it was a brand new job. If you’ve been promised more money, it will be easy to judge whether they come through. It’s more difficult with other factors. You may want to travel less. Maybe you want more flexibility. Or you need more time off. Perhaps it’s growth opportunities that you seek. These factors are harder to deliver. So ask your current employer to put their offer in writing. Tell them that you appreciate their counter. You want to fully evaluate it. You prefer to stay with them, but you want to know that you’re making the right decision. Seeing it in writing will help you do that.

  • Maintain your relationships.
  • We don’t believe you should let your prospective employer know about the counter offer. They probably expect that anyway. However, you should make your final decision very quickly. Somebody will have a position to fill. Lingering only makes that a bigger problem. Whatever you decide, don’t burn bridges with the affected party.

We recently discussed how pushing yourself to your limits leads to your 7 peace of mind]. “Brazen Careerist” blogger, Penelope Trunk, wrote a related post recently called “Don’t get too comfortable at home after work.”

She cites the book, Satisfaction: The Science of Finding True Fulfillment written by Gregory Berns. Berns is a professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Emory University and Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology. Now that’s a title!

In his book, Berns discusses the mood-lifting chemical reaction that occurs in your brain when you stretch yourself. Trunk asserts that you won’t be happy if you only push yourself at work. You also need personal growth at home. Otherwise, you’ll feel a void. Her post is ripe with ideas. We think you’ll enjoy reading it. Here are some thoughts on how to begin.

Shake up your after-work routine
Start with little changes. Make it a habit. You’ll soon feel excited about your new routine. Then you’re ready for bigger and better things.

  • Instead of sitting, stand. When you would usually stand, walk.
  • If tonight is pizza night, order a Hawaiian pizza instead of pepperoni.
  • Instead of staying at home, go out. Instead of going out, stay in.
  • Watch an educational show instead of that show you normally would view.
  • Eat dinner at the table, instead of in front of the television.
  • Instead of surfing the internet, browse materials at your local library. You remember the library, don’t you?

Without balance, you can’t be whole. It’s analogous to taking elective courses. They round you out. You become a more interesting person because you expand your point-of-view.

Without growth, in all areas of your life, you won’t feel fulfilled. Begin with baby steps. Make stretching yourself, at work and at home, a habit. Start today!

Destination Peace of Mind: These 4 Things Insure Success

Yesterday, we discussed our favorite definition of success. It came from the book
They Call Me Coach by the great John Wooden. To paraphrase:

Success is peace of mind which is the result
of giving your all to reach your full potential.

Today we’ll look at the four things you must do daily for your peace of mind.

  1. Always value your values.
    We almost didn’t include this, because it seems so obvious. It should be an unstated assumption, right? Then, we remembered what happens when you assume. Remember that old saying?

If your actions conflict with your core values, you definitely won’t have peace of mind! You have to respect the person you see in the mirror.

  1. Get over today tomorrow.
    If you feel good about today, congratulations! Revel in it … tonight. If you feel lousy about today, lick your wounds … tonight.

But when you wake up in the morning, it’s a new day! So wipe the slate clean and get on getting on to all you know you can become.

  1. All you can do is all you can do, but all you can do is what you must do.
    Let’s dissect this sentence. The first half is your comfort. The second half is your challenge.

Take comfort even if you fell short of your mark. You can’t possibly give more than “all”. You should feel good about your effort. But wait!

The challenge is giving your “all” because success does comes with a price. “All” is a pretty high bar! Only you know if you truly did give everything. The worst person to lie to is yourself. That’s a recipe for perpetual failure.

Did you give your all today? If the answer is yes, congratulations. If no, tomorrow is a new day. You get to try again.

  1. Take it to the limit.
    Most of us have an inherent desire to grow. Otherwise, we get bored. Growth occurs at the point where what you know intersects with what you don’t know. As you push yourself beyond that point, you grow. And with growth comes meaning. You feel fulfilled. You are at peace.

“Who can ask more of a man, than giving all within his span?
Giving all, it seems to me, is not so far from victory.”

So give your all today, for your peace of mind.
