Should I Accept a Promotion

indecision.jpgWe recently ran across a study by the University of Warwick. We found it interesting that their results fly in the face of a long-held assumption.

For years, it’s been assumed that people get healthier after a promotion. Researchers postulated that people who get promoted feel more in control of their lives. They also thought these people may feel better about themselves.

___

___

More mental strain

But the researchers at the University of Warwick found that this wasn’t the case. In fact, they showed that people who get promoted have ten percent more mental strain on average.

It makes sense, doesn’t it? A promotion often comes with increased responsibilities, increased hours, and perhaps more people to supervise.

It can place a tremendous amount of pressure on our free time. The researchers at the University of Warwick cited this time pressure as a reason that people were twenty percent less likely to go to the doctor after a promotion.

It’s life on your own terms, not the terms of your company

Our business culture tells us that we’re supposed to move up. We’re supposed to seek out opportunities to get promoted.

But as you know if you’re a regular reader, bigg success is life on your own terms. You have to decide if a move up is consistent with how you define bigg success. Nothing else matters.

It’s not absolute

There’s more than one way to move up. One person may choose to move into management. Another one masters a craft and becomes known for it. That’s moving up too!

You may want to move up, but now is not the right time. When you think of life on your own terms, think of “terms” as phases of your life. You may have kids at home and want less responsibility right now. That’s a great reason to postpone a promotion.

When the kids go to school full-time, the time may be right. You’re breaking life on your own terms down by the terms of your life.

A framework for decision-making

We’ve identified five elements to bigg success – money, time, growth, work and play. You can use the five elements to help make decisions like this one. Let’s break it down:

Money – You’ll presumably have more if you accept the promotion.

Time – You have the same amount no matter what. But most likely, you’ll have less time away from work.

Growth – Even though their sport seems like it requires mostly physical abilities, top athletes understand how important their mental condition is. We must understand that we need to look out for our health as well as our mental abilities. Besides that, a promotion may allow for a lot of personal growth or it may detract from the personal growth you really want.

Work – You may find your work more, or less, fulfilling. It depends on your goals.

Play – You’ll likely have more money to spend on leisure but less time to enjoy it.

When you know what life on your own terms means to you, it makes it easier to make decisions. The five elements offer a framework to make those bigg decisions. Think about how the five elements come into play with life on your terms and then consider how any potential opportunity affects them.

Don’t stop there!

We’ve also said that the bigg idea behind bigg success is to find synergy. You may realize that the real secret to making this promotion work is to learn to delegate effectively. That’s growth – one of five elements.

You may find that you can accept the promotion, move up at work, and make more money without sacrificing time for play. It may even involve a little more time initially while you develop your delegations skills, but you know it’s worth it because of all the long-term benefits.

Look for synergy in the five elements as you consider opportunities for even bigger success!

What Do You Get When You Spell Desserts Backwards?

Do you get “stressed”?

Isn’t it ironic that the word reversal of desserts is stressed!

Today, we’ll talk about how to whip up the right dessert to relieve some of your stress.

#1 – Start with one dessert

You don’t want to overindulge – that’s a recipe for failure. Choose one treat at first, something that relieves your stress, and make it a part of your life.

#2 – Focus on the process, not the end product

On a recent episode of Monk, a television show we love, Monk took up a hobby. The problem is that he approached it just like he approached his work. His perfectionist tendencies took all the fun out of it.

We’re all very outcome-oriented in our daily lives. Give yourself some dessert – don’t think about the result – just enjoy the journey.

#3 – Start with something off-the-shelf
You don’t have to make your treat from scratch – use a mix.

For example, if you love books, you might think it would be a treat to be part of a book club. Keep in mind that you don’t have to be the leader; you don’t have to start a new one. Just join one that already exists!

#4 – Don’t let your sweet treat go sour
We have a tendency to compound stress with more stress. Your sweet treat shouldn’t be a chore – keep it simple and easy.

Maybe you have a favorite cause. Volunteer to help out. But resist the temptation to join a committee. You have enough meetings at work!

The icing on the cake
According to realage.com, in highly stressful times, your real age can be as much as 32-years older than your calendar age. Here’s another interesting fact – Duke University Medical Center found that the benefits of stress management seem to exceed those of both exercise and usual heart care.

That’s the icing on the cake! Finding ways to reduce stress is like discovering the fountain of youth! How sweet is that?

What’s your treat? Tell us how you relieve your stress!

Our Bigg Quote today comes from B.C. Forbes.

“Work is the meat of life, pleasure the dessert.”

You won’t enjoy your meat if you never get to have any pudding!

Next time, we’ll offer some bigg advice to a homepreneur who just started her own business. She’s having problems with distractions. Until then, here’s to your bigg success!

Don’t Worry! Be Happy …. And Healthy!

By Bigg Success Staff
01-09-08

Work-Life Balance

000071_happy_door_jpg

Are you happy? It turns out that your answer to that question may determine, in some part, how healthy you are.

A recent study, published in American Journal of Epidemiology, shows that there appears to be a link between positive emotions and body chemistry. The study was conducted by Dr. Andrew Steptoe, a professor of psychology at University College in London, along with researchers Katie O'Donnell, Ellena Badrick, Meena Kumari and Michael Marmot.

Specifically, the study showed that people who reported being upbeat had lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol. This hormone may contribute to high blood pressure, abdominal obesity, and reduced immune functions when it’s persistently elevated.

Women who are happy may experience lower levels of C-reactive protein and interlukin 6, according to the study. These two proteins indicate inflammation, which is believed to contribute to heart disease and cancer.

So, if you want to be healthy, be happy!

Happiness is related to enjoyment, contentment, willingness, and gratefulness.

Enjoyment
Spend more time doing things you enjoy. Spend less time on things you don’t. You’ll smile more, which is very infectious! No pun intended! Ah, who are we kidding? Of course, the pun was intended!

Contentment
You can be happy without being content, but you can’t be content without being happy. Contentment is an inner feeling, related to peace of mind. Peace of mind comes from knowing you did your very best to reach your full potential.

In case you missed it, in our inaugural blog, we said that
our favorite 6 definition of success] comes from John Wooden,
who says you’ve succeeded when you have peace of mind.

So do everything you can to become all that you can be. You’ll be happy … and healthier!

Willingness
Be willing to lend a hand. To be a friend. To help someone who can never pay you back. To give back. Develop a willingness to help others in need. Strive to make it part of your essence.

Research shows that 31 people who give are happier … and healthier!] Be willing to help someone today. You’ll be thankful you did, which leads us to …

Gratefulness
Just like a willingness to give has its health benefits, so does an 30 attitude of gratitude]. We all have so many things for which to be thankful. So many things that we take for granted. From family and friends. To talents. To blessings. The list could go on and on …

So spend some time today reflecting and being thankful. You’ll find it makes you happier … can you feel that smile coming?

Because it’s hard to think about happiness without thinking about a smiling face, isn’t it? Doesn’t that make you smile? Happiness flows outward and affects others. So tell us …

What makes you happy? Share it with us … you’ll be happy you did. Can you see our big smile?

Hear today's lesson and laugh on The Bigg Success Show.
