The two of us are spending the whole day together, just like we do everyday – because we’re one of a growing number of couples in business.

If you’re one of us, you’ll probably relate to this – the first thing most people ask is:

“How do you do that?”

And then they add:

“My spouse and I could never do that.”

BIGG success is life on your own terms. We’ve always loved spending as much time together as possible. Being a couple in business lets us max it out.

We get so excited when we meet other couples in business. And we’ve been so fortunate to meet some dynamic duos.

Like Danno Wolkoff and Laura Orkin. Their company, Envision Radio Networks, is the syndicator for our radio show, BIGG Success in a Minute.

We’d like to congratulate them for hitting a milestone this year – their business is ten years old. And we love how they’re celebrating it – they recently made a donation to Danno’s college radio station, WJPZ-FM in Syracuse. The facility is now called the Envision Radio Networks Broadcast Center.

It just goes to show you what couples in business can accomplish. So today, we thought we’d share five tips on how couples in business can mix business with pleasure.

These are mostly a reminder for ourselves. We hope they resonate with you too.

Be whole(istic) 

We spelled it wrong for a reason. We want to emphasize to keep your WHOLE life in mind with everything you do.

Your personal and professional worlds are more interdependent than they are for most people. That’s a good thing…as long as you consciously factor it in as you make plans and decisions.

You also need to keep your whole person in mind. It’s easy to lose yourself when you’re just half of a team.

This doesn’t need to be the case. In fact, quite the opposite.

You should build each other up for your mutual benefit. Couples in business can do this better than any other partners could.

Live with purpose on purpose  

It’s easy to just jump right in with both feet. It’s easy to just focus on what’s urgent. It’s easy to get stuck in the day-to-day.

But couples in business need to live intentionally.

Know your underlying purpose. What’s your WHY?

It should drive every decision – business and personal. Because you will feel the effects more than most people, given your choice to live and work together.

So live with purpose, on purpose.

Bump heads regularly  

We hasten to say that we’re not being literal here.

And no head butting, just head bumping!

By that we mean, check in with each other frequently. We tend to do this over the course of the day by taking quick breaks together.

In just a few minutes, we can catch each other up. We can also help each other with any challenges that have arisen.

It’s also so important to take time out to discuss the BIGG picture. We haven’t always been as good at this as we should. We talk a lot about the day-to-day. We know what we’re trying to accomplish. But we have to force ourselves to slow down and review our plans and progress.

There’s one more piece to bumping heads. You both need to be able to speak freely AND disagree. Disagreement is so important. And boy, do we have our disagreements. They’re good for both our business and our relationship.

If you both agree all the time, you’re probably missing opportunities at best or taking risks you shouldn’t at worst. So you have to lovingly disagree.

Shut up and down 

Know when to say when. Then shut up. Stop talking about the business.

Schedule time to shut down. Then stop working.

We struggle with this. We both love our work.

But we need couple time. So we try to set times and/or days when business is in the background.

We often go for a drive in the country and walk along a river. We also love mysteries.

For example, we have The Thin Man series DVRed right now. Now you know what we’re doing for Valentine’s Day!

Like a lot of entrepreneurs, we’re not good at following rules. So if one of us gets an epiphany while we’re in down mode, we may mention it. We may write it down.

But it’s important to not let it overtake your time together, no matter how BIGG the idea may be.

Bring outsiders in 

We can’t emphasize this one enough – get a coach. We find our coaches invaluable.

If you can’t afford to do that at this point, find other couples in business to network with.

Value Yourself for BIGG Success
Would you like to get recognition for your true value? Then value yourself. Here are five ways:

  • Stop beating yourself up

Quit reminding yourself of what you don’t have. Stop thinking about what you haven’t done.

  • Acknowledge your progress

Think about where you started. Think about this time last year. See how much you’ve learned? See how far you’ve come? Give yourself a pat on the back for all you’ve accomplished.

  • Stop comparing yourself to others

When you see someone who has achieved more than you, reread the previous point. They may not have started where you started. They may have had resources you didn’t have. They may have had a little extra luck come their way. Cut yourself some slack and keep pushing.

  • Focus on your strengths

Stop worrying about your weaknesses. Focus on what you do well. What’s easy for you to do? What do others turn to you for? Value your strengths.

  • Promote yourself

As valuable as you are, you won’t go very far if no one knows it. Humility and self-marketing are not mutually exclusive! When you accomplish something, just share the good news! You’ll encourage others and gain recognition for yourself. Other people will value you more when you value yourself more. Recognize your true value for your BIGG success!

The time paradox for BIGG goal-getters

Back to the odd week…maybe you can relate.

Monday seemed like it should have been Sunday if not Saturday.

We had worked both days over the weekend. We’re pushing to get everything ready for the BIGG announcement we mentioned above.

So the start of the week came too soon.

However, by the close of business on Friday, it felt like it should only be Tuesday. The week just flew by for us.

Yet on Friday, Thursday’s events seemed distant – like they happened a week or more before.

Do you ever feel this way?

Such is the paradox of time for BIGG goal-getters like you –

You’re accomplishing a whole lot,

but you rarely feel like you’re achieving enough.

So time flies by. Yet you’re doing so much, it seems like it’s standing still.

What’s the answer?

  • Take a deep breath

Breathe in deeply. And let it out. Feel your chest expand as you breathe life into your lungs.

Close your eyes. Do it again. A few times.

Go ahead – do it right now. We’ll wait. Breathe in…and out. In…and out.

Feel the relief as you exhale, as the stress flows out of your body.

  • Step away

Now step away. You don’t have to do it physically. Step away mentally.

Let go of everything you’re working on. Let go of all your problems.

Stop thinking. Not for long, but for a little bit.

  • Create space

Get outside your world. Create space between your actual self and your mental self. Pretend like you’re a friend looking in on the life of another friend.

Don’t feel guilty. We know it would be creepy if you actually did this with a friend. But we’re just telling you to do it with yourself. It’s perfectly normal.

  • Go back

We’re always told to forget the past. It’s bad advice.

Go back to the beginning of LAST year. What were you working on then? What challenges were you facing? What was your life like?

Now think about how much you’ve accomplished since then. Think about how far you’ve come.

Sure you may not be fully happy with the results. Ignore that for a minute.

  • Get real

If what you just saw was your best friend’s life and, if your best friend was feeling the time paradox, how would you counsel them?

Would you tell them to look at how far they’ve come?

Would you encourage them to kick it up a notch?

You might do both! There may be some areas where you would tell them to push harder and others where you tell them to revel in what they’ve done.

The point is – get REAL with yourself.

As BIGG goal-getters, we have high expectations for ourselves. So we often beat ourselves up when we should be patting ourselves on the back.

Research has shown that self-compassion is just as

important as self-confidence in achieving your BIGG goals.

We see a lack of self-compassion over and over again when we talk with people like you. We fight it ourselves!

It’s often because we compare ourselves to others. We see other people reaching levels of success we’re still dreaming about.

We ask ourselves what they have that we don’t. We feel like we must be missing something. Maybe we’re not smart enough. Maybe we lack some basic skill.

And you know what? That latter one may be true. There may be something you need to learn.

But you know what else? You can learn it. You WILL learn it. You’ll see more about that when we make the upcoming BIGG announcement.

In the meantime, cut yourself some slack! You’ve come a long way, baby! You’re gonna be a BIGG success!

Is the American Dream Un-American?

What does the American Dream mean today for your BIGG SuccessWhat is the definition of the American Dream? We went to the original source to find out.

James Truslow Adams coined this phrase in 1931 in his book, The Epic of America. Here’s how he defined it:

The American Dream is “that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement.

It is a difficult dream for the European upper classes to interpret adequately, and too many of us ourselves have grown weary and mistrustful of it.

It is not a dream of motor cars and high wages merely, but a dream of social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to attain to the fullest stature of which they are innately capable, and be recognized by others for what they are, regardless of the fortuitous circumstances of birth or position.”

The optimal divider

Marketers divide people into niches. Politicians divide people into voting blocks. Society divides people into classes.

Adams says the American Dream is “a difficult dream for the European upper class to interpret adequately.” We would add that the ruling class in the U.S. increasingly seems to have the same difficulty.

The American Dream is the optimal divider:

  • It gives no credence the family we were born into
  • It couldn’t care less where we went to school
  • It pays no attention to our current title or position
  • It doesn’t really care what you’ve done in the past
  • Its only concern is your potential and the actions you take to live up to it

The American Dream is about the future – your future.

You can realize the American Dream by “doing your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming,” as John Wooden said.

Nothing can stop you from living the American Dream except you!

The American Dream is and isn’t American

So now we come to the question posed in the title: Is the American Dream Un-American?

Absolutely not! Although, sadly, there seems to be an increasing tide of sentiment against:

  • climbing your way up
  • working hard to reach BIGG success
  • making the American Dream come true for you

No, the American Dream is not Un-American. It is uniquely American – for a simple reason.

America was founded on ideals. One of those principles was that government should serve the people and not the other way around.

The Founders designed a government to stay out of the way of its citizens. If you were one of them, they wanted to insure that you could live your life on your own terms.

The promise of the American Dream has brought people to the United States for centuries. It’s the diversity of those people – the melting pot – which has given America its edge. So we see that…

The American Dream isn’t the American Dream at all.

It’s the People’s Dream.

It’s the dream of every human being – no matter where they happen to call home. We all want:

  • to be judged on our own merit
  • the opportunity to create a better life for ourselves and our loved ones
  • to see if we can capitalize on that opportunity

Historically, America has been the place where BIGG goal-getters could realize those dreams. But the People’s Dream has no borders.

So the Dream is not just American. It spans the entire globe.

It’s open to any citizenry of any country that creates an environment where entrepreneurship can thrive. When that happens:

How to Control Your Finances in 3 Simple Steps

How can you take control of your personal finances?

Look for the low-hanging fruit!

Step 1: Take a bite

Pick one of your biggest, optional expenses and take a bite out it. Let’s take eating out as an example.

You don’t need to eliminate it altogether. Just reduce the amount you spend a little bit…say ten percent.

Let’s say you eat out ten times a month. You go to really nice restaurants. You order either an appetizer or a dessert each time.

You may:

  • Opt for staying in one of the ten times
  • Order a less expensive entrée two or three of the ten times
  • Go to a lower-priced restaurant two or three of the ten times
  • Don’t order an appetizer or a dessert five of the ten times

It doesn’t matter what you do. Just do something to start harvesting some extra money immediately.

Step 2: Don’t let it spoil

So now you have picked some low-hanging fruit. What do you do with it?

This is really important because, if you let it sit around too long, it will spoil. It will be used for something that doesn’t advance you toward BIGG success.

So use the money you save in Step 1 to:

  • shore up your emergency fund
  • pay down debt
  • PREFUND purchases

Start with the emergency fund so you’ll have the cash you need when reality bites. You won’t have to rely on a credit card or some special financing deal. How good will that feel?

Once you have six months in your emergency fund, you’re ready to start paying down your debt. Can you imagine not having any debt? Month by month, you’ll see it coming true.

When your debt is gone, use the extra money (and the money you’re saving from payments on debt that doesn’t exist anymore) to PREFUND future purchases. So instead of financing them, you’ll have the cash to pay for them on the spot!

Step 3: Take another bite!

Once you’ve fully digested the first bite we discussed in Step 1, repeat the process again. You may take another bite out of the same expense or pick another one.

Don’t fret about your money woes. Take action with these three simple steps! You’ll soon feel a sense of control over your personal finances. It leads to BIGG success!
