The People You Want to Lead

helpA while back, Jon Swanson had an excellent post about Philip the apostle. It helped us realize something we don’t talk about much here.

BIGG success is life on your own terms. We talk a lot about BIGG goal-getters. However, some people don’t have such lofty goals.

We could say they should do more. We could say they’re not living up to their potential. We could say they’re wrong.

But we would be wrong.

You, and only you, get to define life on your own terms. It’s inherent in the definition! As long as you don’t sell yourself short, nobody but you should have anything to say about it.

Furthermore, BIGG goal-getters need people who don’t think so BIGG. We’ll call them BIGG go-getters.

We need them because they don’t expect so much. They get the job done without a lot of hoopla.

BIGG go-getters will follow if you lead right. You don’t need to pump them up; they are motivated for their own reasons.

However, now and then, they may need to understand why you’re doing something. They may need you to prove yourself from time to time. It’s okay – they’ll be diligently back to work just as soon as they’re satisfied.

So when you run into these mild-mannered, unassuming, practical people, be thankful. They will help you reach BIGG success.

Feeling Stress at Work? You are Not Alone

stressed out at workAre you often stressed out at work? You’re not alone.

A recent study by the American Psychological Association (APA) found that 36% of American workers report that they regularly feel your pain.

What’s the source of their stress?

  • 49% said their pay was creating it
  • 43% cited a lack of opportunities for growth and advancement
  • 43% mentioned their heavy workload
  • 40% thought their employer expected too much
  • 39% referred to the long hours they’re required to work

Employee morale is suffering:

  • Only 43% say they get enough non-monetary rewards and recognition
  • 57% are happy with their employer’s work-life balance efforts
  • Only 52% feel valued
  • Only two-thirds report the motivation to do their best at work
  • 32% plan to look for another job within the next twelve months

You have to ask:

Will it be better somewhere else or will it just be a change of scenery?

So if you’re stressed out at work, you’re not alone.

If you feel overworked and underpaid, you’re not alone.

If you know you could do so much more, you’re not alone.

If you’re thinking about your alternatives, you’re not alone.

If you want to take control of your life, you’re not alone.

BIGG success is life on your own terms. It’s about entrepreneuring your life – taking control to design and build the life that fits you perfectly.

Setting Goals Like a Black Belt

jimThe first word that comes to mind is that people talk about the black belt as a symbol of excellence. We’ve talked about this before. We can couch “excellence” in the term “perfection”. Perfection isn’t a destination; it’s a never ending process. Excellence isn’t something where you get to some level of attainment and then that’s it. Excellence is an ongoing process. It’s harder to keep a black belt than it is to earn one. It’s harder to keep success in business than it is to get there. They always say your first million is the hardest. And then your second million is the hardest, right?

jimIt’s a constant process – making sure you’re staying current, making sure you’re staying relevant and making sure you’re still servicing the people that you want to service. That’s really at the heart of it. The idea of excellence. Excellence implies action; it’s a constant process of self-perfection. The way you get there is through discipline and focus. As far as I’m concerned, discipline is the key to all of this. Discipline means doing whatever it takes to get where you want to go. You want bigg success, right? It’s a series of small steps done on a daily basis when things are going well or when they’re not. That’s discipline. Motivation is an easy one. Everyone who starts a new business, everyone you guys coach, aren’t they really motivated? They’re happy and passionate.

Yeah, it’s exciting. It’s a new adventure.

jimThen about three or four years later, when they’re taking a second on the house to keep the business going, the motivation starts to crumble a little bit.

marylynnWe were talking with a gentleman who works with a lot of small business owners. He said that he notices they start to wear down about sixteen months in.

Yeah, that makes sense because, all of a sudden, the reality is staring them in the face.

marylynnYou’re working so hard. You’re always working. You know this as a business owner, Jim. Sometimes it just seems that there isn’t time for yourself. You do start wearing down.

jimExactly. That’s where the discipline part has to kick in. And focus. Let’s talk about focus. If focus is unchecked, it becomes an obsession. We have to take care of our entire life. Three key areas of life to me are emotional, material and spiritual. We may let the emotional and spiritual sides deteriorate because we’re focusing on the material. Sometimes that happens – you need to focus a little more on one area than the other. Let’s say there’s an illness or one of your loved ones needs attention. Then you’re going to focus a little more on the emotional side. That’s okay. You just have to remember that in the greater scheme of things, there has to be a relative balance. If you find yourself hyper-focused in one area, you have to catch yourself and make sure you’re planning to correct it. People ask about exercises to develop discipline and focus. The first thing I say is this, “It ain’t that hard. Make a decision and then go forward.” You have to decide you’re going to be a disciplined person. Then you just take something that you want or need to do, create a series of steps and go for it. Now, we can create exercises around that. That’s fun sometimes. But really that’s what it boils down to. Sometimes, like we talked about with the branding, we make it too complicated.

georgeYeah, I was going to create an exercise to make myself be more disciplined, Jim. I just couldn’t get around to it!

I’d be glad to help you, George. We’ve got to get you into martial arts class!

marylynnAh, George is always goofing around! It seems to me, as I’m listening to you talk, Jim, that when you are studying for a black belt, it’s a lot of physical discipline – you’re learning this move or that move, when to use it or when
not to – but is mental discipline harder than physical discipline?

jimThey go together. So, all joking aside, when people ask me how to have more discipline, I tell them to pick a thing that has a logical goal – or logical conclusion – to it. Not to say that the black belt or anything is the end, but some measurable achievement.

Let’s say I want to keep my desk more organized. Something simple like that.

jimGood, that’s a great goal. To systemize this a little bit, I might walk you through belt ranks. Let’s say we’re going to get to black belt in desk organization! We’re going to turn you into a Master Desk Organizer!

jimThat’s good! Take ten levels – white, yellow, orange, purple. For the sake of time, I won’t go through the whole thing. You get the idea. You go up through brown and then black belt. At each level, just outline a couple of steps. What’s the simplest thing you can do to start the process of getting your desk organized? It might be just taking an inventory. What’s on my desk? There’s your white belt step. The yellow belt step might be deciding what to do with some of the stuff you don’t want. Or I’m going to choose what I want and what I don’t want on my desk. So on and so forth. You just create a set of levels. It’s very simple.

jimSometimes people do tasking without mindfully being aware of that end goal. We can task ourselves into busy work. That’s not very effective. That’s why the idea of a goal – a black belt level in some sense – is really important to us.

5 Reasons for Lack of Progress

dog_daysHere we are in the middle of the Dog Days of Summer. So today we start a five-part Dog Days series.

Of course, the term “Dog Days” refers to this time of year when it is hot and humid in much of the developed world. It goes back to a time before we had air conditioning, when it was just plain hard to get motivated to get much done.

But the term has also come to mean times when there isn’t much progress. That’s what we’ll focus on today – identifying five common reasons behind slowed progress. It’s a problem we all face from time to time.

Dogging it

One reason we may not accomplish more is simply that we’re dogging it. It could just be laziness. However, we doubt that’s a problem in our community of bigg goal-getters.

It’s more likely a result of one of two other things:

  • You set your goals high, but didn’t reach them. Now you’re discouraged. That’s understandable. But you have to get back in the race. Give yourself some time to lament. While you’re doing that, set a very short-term goal that stretches you just a little bit. Then chase it with all you have! It will get you back on track to bigg success.
  • The flip side is that you did reach your goal. You feel good and good for you! You should. Take a little bit of time to celebrate. Then set a new goal. We grow as humans by striving for more. So push yourself by setting a new goal that gets you excited again.

Dog toys

Lack of progress can also come from too many dog toys. We play with one toy for a while; then we play with another one. But we never really make any progress because our attention is directed in too many directions.

Focus is crucial for bigg success. You only have so much time to push yourself forward. So pick a toy that will take you to bigg success and keep playing with it!

marylynnWe may be swimming in stuff; we’re disorganized. So all we can do is doggy paddle. Research has shown that the average American loses almost an hour a day due to disorganization. What could you accomplish with an extra hour every day?

Dog eared

___

george Sometimes my students turn in a paper that is dog eared instead of stapled. They’ve just folded the top pages over together. It shows that they waited until the last minute. It makes a bad impression. Preparation leads to bigg success.

Dog tricks

The final reason we may feel stuck on a plateau is that we lack knowledge or know-how. We need to learn some new tricks. That’s the thing about bigg success: we put everything we have into reaching our goal. Then we need to learn new things to get to the next level of success. It’s a never ending journey that makes life exciting. And it’s that excitement that propels you to bigg success!

marylynnNow Paul, George and I both took your free assessment. Then I went ahead and paid for the full complete profile. So I have my Career Profile here. When I look at the career paths that would make me happy, they all make sense because they’re in line with my natural preferences. I like how you list what my weaknesses are – those blind spots for which I need to be on the lookout. Again as I’m reading through it, I’m shaking my head in agreement.

paul_tiegerThis report has your work-related strengths and your possible weaknesses. Another piece that’s very important is your career satisfiers. There’s a list of ten career satisfiers for each type. These are the things you need in a career to be juiced by it. The report never says that this is 100 percent true for you. What it does is say, “Okay, out of these ten things, which is most true for you?” You might find five of those things as most important, but knowing that is very helpful when it comes time to evaluate one job versus another.

marylynnAnd even if you’re feeling a sense of dissatisfaction with where you are, to be able to look at this and say, “Well, that’s why. I don’t have this going on or I don’t have that.” I think this is so timely right now, especially as people are losing their jobs and being forced to find something new.

paul_tiegerYou raise a great point because a lot of the jobs that people have now are never coming back. So even if it’s a job you love and even when the economy turns around, that opportunity may not be around in any company. So in this report, we give you many categories – probably about seventy or eighty jobs – that you can look at and say, “That’s something I never thought of before.” But they’re all things that are going to make sense to you based on the research we’ve done over many years. The other piece, that I’m really proud of and that really resonates with people, is that this report helps people approach a job search using their strengths and blind spots. I’m not a fan of generic advice. Everybody says in the career world that you have to go network. That’s true, but networking is a natural activity for extroverts but not for introverts. So we give introverts things to do that work much better for them. It’s a real customized approach to career counseling.

georgeNow Paul, I’d like to take our conversation in a different direction. Mary-Lynn’s an ESFP (Extrovert, Sensor, Feeler, Perceiver) and I’m an INTP (Introvert, iNtuitive, Thinker, Perceiver). Now is there any hope at all for us working and living together? The question really is – does this help you fill in gaps on your team if you’re a leader?

paul_tiegerAbsolutely. My core business is called Speed Reading People. It’s a company that travels around the world training leaders – how to lead and manage – and sales people – how to sell and influence. We offer very prescriptive and practical advice about how to approach a person based on personality type. For example, if you are an INTP, you’re much more theoretical than Mary-Lynn is and you like to make connections. That was very clear to me from your first question. You weren’t talking about what is; you were talking about what might be. You were connecting and linking ideas. That’s what intuitive people do. So if I was talking to you about something and I said, “Let me tell you about my product.” If I gave you every detail that was on my spec sheet, your eyes would close and you would start to doze off within five or six seconds. Because that’s not what you want to know. You want to know the high concept. You want to know why it works and how you can apply it. So if I know that about you, that’s what I’m going to talk about. On the other hand, if I was talking to a very strong sensing type who really did want to know about all that stuff, then I would march them through the facts, the specifics, why it’s worked and where it’s worked in the past. It’s really about speaking the other person’s language. So that’s what speed reading people allows you to do.

georgeThat’s really awesome. Especially since today, we have four generations in the workforce. As their leader, you have to get down to that individual level and relate to them one-on-one.

We didn’t really touch on this … what is your definition of speed reading people, Paul?

paul_tiegerSpeed reading people is quickly understanding a person’s core values and motivations based on observable clues like their demeanor, energy level, vocabulary, and body language. The goal is speed reaching people – understanding how to communicate with that person on their level. I just gave an example of this based on the detail-person versus the high-concept person. People are motivated by different things. If you, Mary-Lynn, are a feeling-type and George is a thinking-type, then you’re motivated by very different things. If you do a good job, Mary-Lynn, and I thank you and tell you how much I appreciate it, that’s going to mean something to you. What will make George happy is telling him that his brilliant idea really helped move the ball forward. In other words, people like to be reinforced for what their gifts are. The gift of an ESFP is somebody who is helpful in practical ways. That’s what they want to be reinforced for. It’s very powerful. I’ve been doing this for over 25 years and I still have insights every day.

paul_tiegerThat’s way too personal! I’m an Extrovert – Intuitive – Feeling – Perceiving type. So you and I, Mary-Lynn, are similar in Extrovert, Feeling and Perceiving. People connect on dimensions with which they’re similar. That’s why the more similar people are, the easier the communication. The more different, the more challenging the communication. I didn’t say they don’t have a shot; they can really balance themselves out very well but it’s more challenging. So that’s my type and it’s really kind of a very entrepreneurial, counseling, artsy kind of person. And that’s what I do in my life.
