Becoming An Entrepreneurial Employee

employeesBigg success is life on your own terms. Work is one of the five elements of bigg success. That’s our focus today.

Just a generation or so ago, entrepreneurs weren’t highly regarded. The thought was that they were people who no one else would hire.

___

___

Now it seems that most people want to be an entrepreneur. People think that climbing the corporate ladder robs you of your individuality. You become a mindless worker bee.

People associate owning your own business with freedom. It can be liberating. Picture your typical day owning your own business …

You’re the last one in every morning. It’s not like anyone’s going to fire you. Of course, you’re the first one out the door at the end of the day. You’re the boss! You take long lunches. Most days, when the weather’s nice, you’re out on the golf course.

If only it were true!

The reality for many entrepreneurs – especially those with an early stage business – is you’re the first to arrive in the morning and the last one out the door at night. If you take lunch at all, you may eat it at your desk while you keep working. You’re not out playing golf most afternoons. In fact, you’re doing well when you can squeeze in a little play time over the weekend.

Do you remember the BTO song, Takin’ Care of Business? They said that self-employed people “work hard at doing nothing all day. Obviously they had never spent time with a start-up entrepreneur!

It can be very stressful, particularly when you take on employees and have to meet payroll. You have fixed costs to cover every month. There are so many hats to wear, so many things to do, so much to keep up on. It’s easy to feel like you’re buried in work.

Not exactly the fairy tale we often think about.

We’re purposefully painting a bleak picture. Owning your own business definitely has its upsides, but it isn’t for everyone. Some people are much happier keeping their day job.

However, we think there are synergies between the two. Here are six tips to become an entrepreneurial employee:

Select the right career

Bigg success is life on your own terms. It starts internally. Think about the three P’s – passions, preferences and proficiencies. We have a great personality test in The Bigg Success Store that will help you with this. It’s free!

Now you’re ready to look outside yourself. Entrepreneurs look at 2 C’s – customers and competitors. As an entrepreneurial employee, your customers are potential employers. Your competition is other people who do what you do. You’re looking for a mismatch – too many employers and too few potential hires.

Add value

Don’t settle for being average and ordinary. Set yourself apart from all the other potential hires by becoming an expert in your chosen field. Consistently deliver superior results and you’ll become invaluable.

Solve problems

Take on projects that no one else wants. Be positive. See solutions where others see only problems. If you solve problems, money will follow.

Work!

Entrepreneurs work long hours, especially in their early days. Entrepreneurial employees do the same. If you can’t work a little longer, work a little harder. Spend less time chatting and more time being productive.

Embrace change

Change creates opportunity. So welcome change. Continually reinvent yourself. Think about yourself at this time last year. If you don’t have any new skills, if you can’t add anything more, if you aren’t producing better results … why should you get paid more?

Retain earnings

Save means safe so save and invest. Entrepreneurs retain earnings to fund growth. You’ll save to give yourself the liberty to get out of a bad situation as a last resort. And to help you survive through the inevitable downturns and associated layoffs.

You can choose to be entrepreneurial in the traditional sense or by going the corporate route. You choose because bigg success is life on your own terms.

Do you think employees can be entrepreneurial?

4 Types of Free Agents

freedomThis is the final installment of our five-part series on freedom. In the first three parts, we discussed the 3 levels of freedom – freedom of, freedom from, and freedom to. Last time we talked about financial freedom.

Now we want to talk about the freedom to spend your time however you want. If you can do that, we think you’re a free agent. We’ll identify four types of free agents today:

___

___

The Aggressive Passive

Aggressive Passives let their money work for them so they don’t have to work. They make enough money from their investments to pay for their desired standard of living. So they are free to spend their time however they want.

The amount of money you need to be an Aggressive Passive is a lot less if you’re perfectly content not living lavishly than if you want to live large. But it’s life on your own terms, go for what you want.

In our last post, we discussed paths to financial freedom. If you want to be an Aggressive Passive – and you want it sooner rather than later – you’re going to focus on the wealth building path. Maximize income, minimize costs and build Assets – most likely your own business or real estate.

The Passion Player

Passion Players love what they do so much that they don’t feel like they’re working. In many cases, their hobby is their craft and their craft is their hobby.

We have a friend who had built up an incredible business and sold it off. Now he’s back in the same type of business only this time he’s doing it with no employees. He chooses his clients very carefully. He takes plenty of time off, yet he’s still doing very well money-wise. He’s thrilled!

You may choose to work inside a corporation and be a Passion Player. Just keep in mind that, in addition to your work, you must love working for and with the people around you. Since you only have one client – your employer – that may be difficult at times.

Inside or outside of a company, your focus as a Passion Player is building up your personal brand. It may make sense to do this while you have the security of a full-time job. But there’s also some real security – as well as freedom – in moving from an employer (which is like having only one client) to multiple clients.

The Automatic Pilot

Automatic Pilots don’t just sell a product or a service. They don’t just create a brand. These free agents build a business.

In that business, they develop systems and controls. The systems insure a consistent standard of the product or service they offer. The controls allow these free agents to step away from their business without fear of it falling apart.

While they develop their systems and controls, they also train a protégé who can run the business in their absence. Once the protégé is fully trained, the entrepreneur is a free agent!

The Synergizer Bunny

These free agents sit at the hub of a network. They tap that network to bring the best people to the table.

Synergizer bunnies don’t just do projects with others. Bigg success comes to them by creating entire businesses through strategic alliances. Everyone involved is well compensated and the customers receive a great value. It’s a win all the way around.

That’s the key to becoming a free agent of any type: Help others find ways to improve their lives and you’ll be a bigg success.

No Limits

bigg-success-profiles.jpgWe’re introducing a new feature today called Bigg Success Profiles. We want to feature members of our community talking about what life on your own terms means to them. Today on The Bigg Success Show, we talked with Pavel Sokolovsky. Pavel is one of the founders of an exciting new business, Meet Me at Green. Let’s get to the conversation …

___

___

___

marylynn
Welcome to The Bigg Success Show, Pavel.

___

___

pavelThanks Mary-Lynn. Thanks George. I’m a long-time listener and first-time caller!

___

___

marylynnWe love talking about life on your own terms and we love hearing the stories of members of our community. So let’s kick it off, Pavel. What does life on your own terms mean to you?

___

___

pavelTo me, life on my own terms has a lot to do with ambition. I believe I’m a pretty ambitious young man and I wouldn’t want anybody to put a limit on what I can and cannot do professionally or socially, for that matter. One of the reasons I went toward small business, and not corporations as many of my classmates did, is because I didn’t want to be pigeon-holed by my level at the corporation. Whether you’re a first-year associate, analyst, or whatever it might be, it tends to come with a lot of strings attached and affects whether or not your ideas are taken seriously. Now I’m sure there are people who break this mold – there are all-stars – but this tends to be the case. So that’s why I went into a small business. I wanted to be able to use my potential to its fullest. I want to explore my limits and be the best business person I can be. Starting my own business allows me to do that because I don’t have a boss saying, “No – you can’t do this project.” I only have the market telling me what it will and will not accept, which is great.

___

___

georgeThat’s awesome, Pavel. Your classmates were going off to Fortune 500 companies and large consulting firms. Did they ever question you or ridicule you for going off on your own?

___

___

pavelLuckily, they’ve all been very supportive of me. They all know that I’m very entrepreneurial. So they tend to accept that. They have their day jobs – from 8 to 6 or 9 to 5, whatever it may be – and I work what I’ll call my extended hours!

___

___

george
I like the way you said that!

___

___

pavelBut we’re after slightly different things. It’s understood that there’s going to be more than one way to get what we need out of life.

___

___

marylynnEverybody for their own terms, right? Pavel, what would you say is your biggest challenge to living life on your own terms right now?

___

___

pavelWhen you’re starting a business, it’s not the same as a regular corporate job because your cash flow is a little more unpredictable. Many times, you’ll find yourself pinching pennies because you didn’t get paid this week. But you keep your head up because you know if you achieve your goals, the money will naturally follow. While your cash flow is tight, you just have to accept it, not spend it, save up, invest in your business and hope for the best!

___

___

marylynnSo Pavel, what are you doing right now to overcome this challenge?

___

___

pavelI try to save up a little in a slush fund to treat myself every now and then and to keep my sanity. I like to go out with my friends. I also have a hobby purchasing books on Amazon. I just can’t stop!

___

___

georgeNice plug! Ca-ching! Now Pavel, what are you doing that’s really fun – either at work or in your personal time?

___

___

pavelMy day job is fun. Meet Me at Green has been fun – programming the web site, organizing the people involved and trying to recruit more members. As this community grows, so does my site and its usefulness to all the members. I’m sure you expected an answer like, “I love to go skiing in Aspen on the weekend” but, in reality, when I work on Meet Me at Green, I am having fun. That’s the best part of it.

___

___

georgeFortunately, or unfortunately, we can totally relate to what you’re saying. It occurs to me, Pavel, you are really into green – whether it be money or the environment!

___

___

pavelThe money is definitely not my number one goal, but it’s a good way to validate what you’re doing.

___

___

marylynnWe wish you the best of luck with your business, Meet Me at Green. Can anybody join?

___

___

pavelWe’re focusing on businesses that are involved in green products and services. But if you have a passion for green, if energy efficiency or environmental awareness is important to you, then please sign up! Membership is currently free.

___

What is Your Thing?

tutors-on-tv.jpgToday we introduced a new segment on The Bigg Success Show – Tutors on TV. You really might enjoy listening because we can’t fully replicate the experience in text!

___

___

One of our favorite TV shows is How I Met Your Mother. On a recent episode, two of the characters, Barney and Marshall, were discussing that there could be more layoffs at the bank at which they both work.

Barney says he’s not worried about it because he has too much on them. But Marshall is worried.

Barney tells Marshall he needs a “thing” – something that makes him fun and well-liked. Barney points out the guy in Account Services who’s known as “The Food Guy.” There’s “Fantasy Guy”, “YouTube – Clip Guy”, and even creepy “Back Rub Guy.”

After several attempts, Marshall came up with “Sports Guy” – he ran the fantasy sports league at the office.

Although this is a comical way at looking at how to stand out, it probably isn’t going to help you keep your job. But there’s an underlying lesson that will help you build your personal brand.

A memorable characteristic

Our friend, Jay Ehret, The Marketing Guy, recently left a great comment on a show we did about personal branding. We said it was important to have a consistent persona. Jay added that it was also crucial to have at least one memorable characteristic.

___

georgePeople tell me all the time that they love my laugh. It’s funny – I don’t know how to develop a good laugh. But I know when I hear anyone in my family laugh, I get a kick out of it. I guess I’m lucky enough to share the same genes.

___

___

marylynnGeorge’s laugh makes people feel good. And he has a natural ability to make them laugh. People love that about him.

___

So what about you makes you stand out? For what do people remember you? What’s your thing? It can be as simple as a handshake. You may be sincerely likable. There are a lot of possibilities.

Beyond personality

___

marylynnBut it goes beyond personal characteristics. It’s also about what you’re really good at. I think I’m pretty good at audio production. I have experience, but also a real passion for it.

___

___

georgePeople often comment about the production quality of The Bigg Success Show. I tell them Mary-Lynn gets all the credit for that. For example, she created the fun sound effect for our show today as well as all the sound you ever hear on our show.

___

You may be the go-to person or the connector – you’ve got a great Rolodex. You may be the person who can lead people others can’t. Once again, there are a lot of places to find your thing.

___

___

Finding your thing

We think you often find your thing where your passions meet your proficiencies. What do you love? What are you really good at? They’re not always the same, but they often are.

If you’re a really humble person, it may be hard to think about what your thing is. But fortunately, there’s a really good solution …

Ask!

Ask your family, friends, and closest associates what they think that thing is for you.

A bigg request

We want to do more segments of Tutors on TV. We’d love it if you help us out. Have you learned a thing or two from a TV show?

Please share that with us by leaving a comment below, calling us at 888.455.BIGG or sending us an e-mail at bigginfo@biggsuccess.com.

We thank Jay for sharing his fantastic insight with us. And we thank you so much for reading our post today.

What the Car You Drive Says About You

porsche_cake.jpg It’s not what you make that really counts; it’s how much you keep. We base that on studies that show how millionaires became millionaires. Sure, they’re always trying to earn more, but they really watch what they spend. That’s one of their secrets to success in many cases.

___

___

Only you know your terms

We were recently at a birthday party for our friend, Tim. His wife had a really cool cake for him. It’s the picture you see with this post.

We were talking with Tim about his Porsche. He’s one of our regulars here at BIGG Success and he commented about how we’re always talking about frugality. A Porsche may not be consistent with that mindset.

But BIGG success is life on your own terms. If your terms include having a Porsche parked in the garage, then more power to you!

___

georgeThat’s one of the things we love about our definition of bigg success – it’s not judgmental. I can’t tell you what’s best for you. Just like you don’t know what’s right for me. Heck, sometimes I don’t even know what’s right for me!

___

___

marylynnThat’s the beauty of life on your own terms. When you’re living it, you don’t judge other people because you think, “Oh, that’s life on their own terms.”

___

We try to report what works – what research shows helps you get to that next level of success in your life. But we can’t tell anyone what the right choice is for them. You decide because you’re the one who lives with it.

We hope we provide some additional insight to help you with your decisions, but ultimately you’re the entrepreneur of your life. You’re in charge.

Your car is an expression
