The Two Most Powerful Words You Can Use

We were pleased to welcome Steve Harper, author of The Ripple Effect: Maximizing the Power of Relationships for Your Life and Business, to The Bigg Success Show today.

Steve shared the two most powerful words you can use … thank you.

People take these two words for granted or don’t use them enough. Steve said that in his work of helping people create bigger and better relationships, he has noticed that relationships accelerate when you recognize people who have helped you out. People want to feel appreciated for what they’ve done for you.

It’s sad to say that this simple philosophy of thanking people can set you apart from all of your competitors. But because so many people fail to show any appreciation, it will if you regularly show your gratitude.

We discussed three specific groups of people that you should thank. Now don’t think this list is all-inclusive. It’s just all we had time for!

Customers
One of the most important times to say thanks is when someone does business with you and your company (or the company for whom you work). Show your sincere appreciation to your customers. Making this a habit will open doors with that customer, and with people that customer knows.

People who introduced you to someone
Another important time to say thanks is when someone connects you with someone else. If you show them your appreciation, you’ll make an impression and reinforce their belief that you’re a good person to introduce to others.

Co-workers
This is so important today with good help increasingly harder to find. You should show your appreciation when the people you work with (or who work for you) go above and beyond their normal duties. They are far more likely to do it again when you recognized them for a job well done. They appreciate that you appreciate what they do for you.

As we told Steve … now we understand why Elvis was so popular. He didn’t just say, “Thank you.” He said, “Thank you very much!”

Steve’s #1 secret to success: Be a resource to others.
This goes along with the “thank you mentality”. Steve says that one mantra that he has always lived by is “The Treasure Chest Principle”.

The Treasure Chest principle holds that people are an unbelievable treasure chest of opportunity if you just take the time to pick the lock, lift the lid, and look at what’s inside.

Gain a true appreciation of the people that cross your path in life. One of the best, and quickest, ways to build better relationships, move up in your career, or build a better organization is to have this “resource mentality”.

You have to connect with the people who cross your path and engage them so you can find out how you can help them. If you do that with no expectation of anything in return, the ripples will come back to you.

Steve offers you a great resource
You can download a FREE chapter of The Ripple Effect at Steve’s site and learn about other services that he offers as well.

And in case you’re wondering, we didn’t forget to say “thank you” to Steve for sharing his time and wisdom with us today!

Our bigg quote comes from G.B. Stern:

“Silent gratitude isn’t much use to anyone.”

So don’t just think “Thanks”, thank out loud.

Is Your Mind Like a Skipping CD?

Picture this – you grab one of your favorite CDs. You slide it into your CD player, select the track you want, and begin listening to one of your favorite songs when, all of a sudden … the CD starts skipping.

It occurred to us that sometimes our minds are like that skipping CD. We get stuck in one place. We have to control our own internal chat – what we say to ourselves, what we allow ourselves to think about – so we can hear the sweet sounds of success.

All the points are listed here, but you’ll have more fun listening to them.
Just click the  button above.

If you are viewing our feed, look for the media file at the bottom

Skips to avoid … skips to embrace
So don’t focus on what you can’t change … focus on what you can.

So don’t focus on what you can’t change … focus on what you can.

Don’t try to change others … change yourself.

Don’t worry about what you can’t control … focus on what you can.

Don’t think about yesterday … think about today.

Don’t tell yourself you can’t do it … tell yourself you can.

Don’t focus on your shortcomings … focus on your strengths.

Don’t ask why you’re different … embrace what makes you unique.

Don’t focus on what might have been … focus on what can be.

Don’t fret about past decisions … make the best choices today.

Don’t think about missed opportunities … think about the opportunity that’s in front of you now.

Skip past the negative thoughts so you become all you want to be.

How to avoid skips

Some skips are caused by surface scratches. In the preceding section, we discussed how to avoid those – simply change what you think about!

But what do you do if it’s a larger problem? You may need to skip proof your player!

There are a number of ways to do this. Some examples:

  • Feed your mind daily.
Fill your mind with things that encourage you and inspire you. One great way to do this is to tune in to the Bigg Success Show for a daily lesson and a laugh in five minutes or so!
  • Associate with positive people.
They can’t motivate you, but they will lift your spirits. Look at how they approach challenges. Listen to the words they use and how they say them.
  • Adopt a balanced lifestyle.
Get some exercise, watch your diet, and get some sleep for crying out loud! It’s easy to lose focus when you don’t take care of yourself. Recharge your batteries!
Help your friends recharge their batteries. Tell them about Bigg Success.

Our bigg quote today is a Chinese Proverb.

“If you wish to know the mind of a man, listen to his words.”

How you talk to yourself determines who you will become.

Next time, we’ll discuss how to form better opinions and make better decisions. Until then, here’s to your bigg success!

From Refund to Riches: How to Turn a $2,300 Refund into $723,000!

With tax day upon us here in the United States, a lot of people will get a refund soon. So today, we’ll discuss how to turn that refund into riches.

But this blog is really about “found” money – money you weren’t expecting. The average refund last year (paid in 2007 from 2006 tax returns) was $2,287, according to the IRS.

That’s a nice down payment on a plasma TV!

That’s what a lot of people do – spend their refunds on things that won’t be worth much in a few years.

Instead of that, you could save and invest it. But isn’t that’s boring?

Boring can be exciting when your money starts to compound!

How to turn your $2,300 refund into $643,000!

Say you’re 25 years old and you get a $2,300 refund every year until you retire at 65. We’ll assume that you earn 8% on that money, which may be a little conservative depending on what you invest in.

Under these assumptions, that $2,300 a year invested will turn into a nest egg of over $643,000 when you retire!

Now is that boring?

Age makes a difference. Take the previous example for a 35-year old. Your nest egg is still significant – it’s over $281,000. But by waiting just ten years to start, it will be less than half as much!

But even then, you still create a nest egg of nearly $300,000.

2 ways it can be even better

#1 – Quit loaning the government money at 0%.
That’s what you’re doing when you get a refund – you’re getting your money back, but you don’t earn any interest on it while they hold it. So redo your W-4 so you only withhold what you expect to owe.

Then you won’t get a refund, but you’ll have more money in every paycheck. But here’s the key:

You have to be disciplined enough to invest that money!

Let’s say you do that – Invest your refund check this year, adjust your W-4, and then invest the extra money that shows up in your paycheck. You’re that 25-year old we talked about earlier. Only now …

… you’ll have over $723,000, instead of $643,000. It makes an $80,000 difference!

Doesn’t that open your eyes about the “cost” of a refund?

#2 – Pay off debt that’s costing you more than 8%.

We assumed an 8% return. If you have any debt that’s costing you more than 8%, pay it off first and your returns will be even higher! Once your debt is paid off, start investing to build your nest egg.

Jake’s Take – Top 5 signs that you hired the wrong accountant

#5 – He insists on filling out your return using only Roman Numerals.

#4 – He offers to help you boost your deductions by renting you his wife and kids.

#3 – He spends most of your consultation looking nervous and asking if you're wearing a wire.

#2 – He does all his calculations on an Etch-a-Sketch.

#1 – His client list includes Leona Helmsley, John Gotti, and the Unibomber.

Our bigg quote today is a Proverb.

“Money grows on the tree of patience.”

So do you want to watch your new plasma TV or do you want to watch your money grow? The choice is yours!

100 Tips to Succeed Bigg!

100

Today is a special blog for us – it is number 100!

Bigg Success was born on Nov 12, 2007 with our first Bigg Success Show. It’s been a bigg ride so far!

Comments from you
It’s always great to hear from you. One of our favorite comments was a listener who told us that The Bigg Success Show is her daily mojo!

We also love it when people tell us they got a good laugh. Admittedly, it’s easier to deliver a laugh on the show than in our blog – sometimes it doesn’t translate well. By the way, to hear the show, just click the  button near the top of this page.

We strive to deliver a daily lesson and a laugh in five minutes or so. We believe that it’s better not to be too serious, but still give practical suggestions. It’s been great to hear from so many of you that you did indeed use one of our tidbits.

We don’t know it all and we don’t pretend to. In fact, on the show, George said, “I usually assume that I know less than anyone in the room. Unfortunately, it usually turns out that I’m right!”We value your input and it’s so easy to give it – all you have to do is type! Just click on the article title and look for “Leave a Reply” at the bottom of the page.

Celebrating a milestone
So today is a milestone for us. When we discussed Climbing the Stairway to Success, we said you should give yourself a treat when you hit a goal. Well, we’re practicing what we preach by taking some time to savor the moment with you today.

100 tips – we’ve delivered three times our promise
We promised 100 tips to succeed bigg in our title today. We include a bigg quote in every blog. So go to our Bigg Quotes page and you’ll find a link to the blog where that quote was featured. You can count them – there’s 100!

We would count them ourselves but between the two of us we only have twenty fingers and toes!

In reality, we discuss at least three tips on every show, so you’ll find over 300 tips to succeed bigg! That’s three times what we promised! Check it out for yourself! We dare you!

Two of our favorites
You’ve heard us say that when you face an obstacle, you have to find way past it. At Super Bowl time, we did a show called Fumble Forward. We wanted to highlight one of the most famous fumbles of all time, but we couldn’t get licensing permission to air the original broadcast. So we recreated it ourselves. (Hear the clip in The Bigg Success Show. Click above.)

Mary-Lynn said she’s never been a sports broadcaster. It was fun! Finding a creative solution to the problem was even more rewarding.

We did a show on multi-tasking – Can You Walk and Chew Gum at the Same Time? Unfortunately, George showed all of you that he can’t.
(Hear the clip in The Bigg Success Show. Click above.)

Mary-Lynn said George better give up on Dancing with the Stars!

Announcement

On February 29, we did a special leap year show about the growing trend of people traveling while working, Leaping from Place to Place.

And speaking of taking a leap, we got married that day! George said it’s great – he only has to remember an anniversary every four years!

Will you help?
We started Bigg Success to bring together a community of like-minded people who would help each other succeed bigg. We may be the conductors, but it takes an orchestra for the music to be sweet.

Here’s one thing YOU can do to help – tell everyone you know about Bigg Success!

When you hear a show or read a blog that you like, share it! An easy way to do this is to click on the “Share This” button at the bottom of each post. There are a number of options – one is to e-mail a friend.

We thank you so much for being part of Bigg Success!

Our bigg quote today is by David Joseph Schwartz, who said,

“The person determined to achieve maximum success learns the principle that progress is made one step at a time. A house is built one brick at a time. Football games are won a play at a time. A department store grows bigger one customer
at a time. Every big accomplishment is a series of little accomplishments.”

Your accomplishments may seem tiny on their own, but when you put them together, they’re mighty.

That’s the mighty tinies, not the tidy whities!

Next time, we’ll discuss five laws of stratospheric success. Until then, here’s to your bigg success!
