Do Distractions Lead to Success?

We saw an article about distractions and success by The Wall Street Journal. A new study shows that students with attention-deficit disorder achieve more.

The study was conducted by researchers at the University of Memphis and the University of Michigan. Students with ADD were more likely to have won a prize at an art show or a science fair.

They were higher achievers across the board.

Could it be that lack of focus is a competitive advantage?

Yes, according to another study by researchers at the University of Toronto and Harvard University. They gave students a short test and measured their ability to filter out background noise – like a nearby conversation or an air conditioning running.

The students who struggled to ignore the noise were more likely to be “eminent creative achievers” based on their previous performances.

Daydreamers are more creative

The article also cites research that shows a link between daydreaming and creativity. So instead of getting your head out of the clouds, maybe you should get your head into them!

Entrepreneurs ride an emotional roller coaster. And the highs are higher and the lows are lower. It’s part of the game. Daydreaming may help.

George KruegerWhen I’m feeling low or I’m feeling a great deal of stress – which often come in one crushing package – I take time to daydream. Sometimes I do it at my computer, but most of the time I rely on the basic tools of pen and paper. As I do a mind dump, I can feel the energy coming back to me. I get that spark of creativity. I begin seeing solutions. It really helps.

Embrace distractions

Mary-Lynn FosterI don’t know if it’s my background as a radio DJ – talk about a business with a lot of things going on all at once – I can’t work without background noise. Quiet is a distraction to me!

BIGG success is life on your own terms. If distractions help you, by all means, get distracted!

Other people are always telling us to focus. Our parents did it. Our teachers did too. Bosses expect it as well.

The Key to Success

the key to success | BIGG SuccessWe’re writing this post to ourselves. We hope it helps you too.

The key to success is focused, consistent, daily activity.

Busy does not equal successful. Hard work alone won’t get you anything but tired.

You have to get results. You get the results you want by focusing on activities that move you to the next level.

Stop doing everything else!

There’s a tremendous opportunity cost to wasting time. You can’t get the time back.

You’ll always be a step behind where you could have been.

But don’t forget – down time is not a waste of time. It’s important to stoke your energy reserve.

So make sure you eat right, exercise and get plenty of sleep. And don’t just feed your body – feed your mind and soul as well.

You’re passionate about what you do. But passion is overrated.

Let’s face it – there are days when you don’t feel like doing it. And it’s easy to coast for a short time since you’re your own boss.

But on today, off tomorrow leads to nowhere. You must operate at 100% every single day.

That creates momentum. Momentum is a powerful force that can work for you or against you.

So on those days when you just don’t feel the vibe, think about momentum. Then act!

Pick one important thing on your to-do list. Make it something somewhat simple and quick. And get it done.

Then pick another one. Check it off.

Next, get away from your desk for a few minutes. Stretch or do some calisthenics. Then get back to your pursuit of BIGG success.

You can be a BIGG success today. In fact, you must.

BIGG success doesn’t just happen. You make it happen.

You make it happen today. Not tomorrow. Not next week. Today.

Focused, consistent, daily activity creates positive momentum. Positive momentum compounds over time into BIGG success!

Be a Success the Simple Way

saying no when there is no time to say yes | BIGG SuccessA colleague, who is also your friend, calls to ask for your help on a project. You know it will take a few hours of your time.

A few hours you don’t have. You already had your day planned. You have things-to-do that are important for your BIGG success.

You know there is no benefit for you to help them. What do you do?

Do you say yes and fall behind on your most critical tasks? Or do you say no. If you do, you know you’ll feel guilty.

Know when to be negative

A lot of success talk focuses on the positive. The most successful people know when to be negative.

So in the scenario above, just say no.

No makes your life less complex.

No keeps you on task.

No helps you keep your life in sync.

How to say no without feeling guilty

But you’ll feel guilty if you say no. Get over it.

Look at the scenario again. What’s the win for you?

Sure, helping a colleague makes you feel good. But how do you feel the second after that euphoria wears off?

You know, the moment you realize that you still have your whole to-do list. Do you feel overwhelmed?

Of course, you do. It’s draining.

You can’t be all things to all people and be a BIGG success. So you have to pick your opportunities carefully.

BIGG goal-getters are all about win – win. Of course, win – win doesn’t always happen simultaneously.

But in the case we presented, it’s clearly not a win for you. So you have to say no. And here’s a little trick to make it easier…

Don’t focus on what you can’t do. Focus on what you can do.

This may not always be possible. Sometimes all you can do is say no.

But occasionally, you may be able to find an alternative. In the scenario above, maybe you can suggest someone else who may be able to help your friend.

BIGG success is life on your own terms. No is the most liberating term in our language. No helps you reach BIGG success faster.

The Magical Power of Compounding Your Time

time_watchBIGG success is life on your own terms. There are five elements of BIGG success: money, time, growth, work and play. Money and time are our two resources.

Most people are familiar with the compounding power of money. For example: Assume you invest $100 a month in a plan that allows you to defer the taxes when you’re 35 years old. You plan to retire at 65 (30 years from now). If you earn a 6% return (conservative by historical standards), your retirement portfolio will be almost $102,000. Not bad on a total investment over the years of $36,000.

A small amount of money, invested wisely over time, turns into a BIGG sum.

Time compounds like money

What about time? Does it compound? You may not have money to invest. But everyone has the same amount of time every day. Time is the great equalizer.

Time, our other resource, compounds similarly to money. If you invest time, over time, you can create BIGG success. It may come in the form of money or in some other form (e.g. a better life for you and your family).

Here’s the challenge:
If you invest your money in the wrong thing, you may lose all or part of it. Or you may not earn as much on it as you should.

The exact same principle applies to time. If you invest your time poorly, you won’t reach your full potential. You’ll miss opportunities. You must focus to reach BIGG success!

Step 2-Find Abundance in a World of Scarcity

abundanceWe’re doing a series on abundance. Last time, we took the first step – create a fortune by feeling fortunate.

No matter what life may throw our way, we are so lucky to live freely. We may not have everything we want, but we’re so fortunate to have so much.

Now we’re ready for the second step of finding abundance:

Build in Reserve Capacity

Many people today are trying to sprint through the entire marathon. To run that pace for a short time may be fine. But to run the whole course at that speed only leads to wearing out long before the finish line.

In your schedule
Finish strong by building reserve capacity in your schedule. Here are some suggestions:

  • You start to do this by setting your direction. What does bigg success mean to you? Bigg success is life on your own terms. What does that look like? Get a clear picture of it in your mind.
  • With that vision, focus every day on the things that are the most important to getting there. If it doesn’t move you toward it, stop doing it!
  • Then honestly assess how much you, as a human being, can accomplish in a day. Live as a human, not a superman or superwoman. Live like a human, not a machine or a robot. Leave yourself some breathing room when you plan your day.
  • Also plan for the unplanned. Things will happen that will need your attention. Projects will take longer than expected. Opportunities will present themselves along the way.

If your schedule is jam packed, you won’t be able to take advantage of them. Or your bigg opportunity may pass right before your eyes and you’ll be so busy you won’t even notice it.

In your budget
Once again, it comes back to what life on your own terms means to you. When you look at what you’re spending money on, are all expenditures moving you closer to that dream life?

You know where you want to go. You know how fast you want to get there. Sometimes that means creating abundance for the future by creating a reserve today.

When you have money in the bank or money in your investment account, you feel a sense of abundance, don’t you? It’s only human. So let’s do it:

  • Eliminate every cost that doesn't move you closer to where you want to be. Take the money you save and stash it away.
  • Another great financial reserve is reserve borrowing capacity. It’s not an asset in the strictest sense of the word, but it sure is an asset when your bigg opportunity presents itself. So build reserves to live in abundance. That’s bigg success!
