A year is too long.
Think one quarter. Three months. Thirteen weeks. 90 days.

What is the one thing you would like to change in your life by then?
That’s your resolution.
Write it down. Find a picture to represent it.

Next, think about what it will take to make the change a reality.
These are your actions.

Picture yourself actually doing these things.
Can you see yourself succeeding? If not, you have the wrong resolution.
Keep repeating this process until you can see yourself succeeding at the actions required.

Then take action on your actions. Do it. Today. That’s it.
Don’t worry about 90 days from now.
Don’t think about next month.
Don’t bother with next week.
Don’t even concern yourself with tomorrow.

Just focus on today.
Begin your day by focusing on your goal.
Read your goal statement. Or look at the photo.
Then picture yourself already succeeding.
Now visualize yourself taking the actions you need to take today.

Then do it. Right now.
Win this moment. Now this one. And this one.
Keep winning moment by moment.

Take a moment now and then to celebrate your victories.
Take price in your accomplishments.
Give yourself a pat on the back.
Treat yourself in a way that won’t compromise your progress.
Keep going. Moment by moment. Day by day.
That’s it.

Oh, there is one more thing – if you slip up, don’t sweat it.
You’re only human. You had a momentary weakness.

Now foster your strength.
Don’t repeat the mistake.
Don’t use it as an excuse to give up on your resolution.

You wouldn’t do that, would you?
Because you’re a BIGG goal-getter.
Because you realize that tomorrow will be today soon enough.
And all you need to focus on is today. On this moment.
It leads to BIGG success!

Do This Instead of Making New Year Resolutions

Find your next reality for BIGG SuccessWe must make a confession. We don’t like the term “retired.”

We’re not grammar experts. We’ll leave that to Mignon Fogarty, aka Grammer Girl.

However, to say “I’m retired” describes a present condition in the past tense!

Why would you do that? Why would you spend the rest of your life describing an event that happened years or decades ago?

What’s next?

So always have something to look forward to. And don’t wait until you retire to do this.

You should have it now. We’re on the cusp of a new year. What’s next for you?

Don’t think about New Year’s resolutions. Throw that idea away. Instead, think about what’s next.

Why your why matters

Your next may be better health. It may be more balance between work and home. It could be any number of things.

It doesn’t matter what it is as long as it’s important – really, really important to you. Because if it isn’t, you’re doomed before you started.

So once you know what’s next for you, think about your “why.”

Why do you want it? What is driving you to this next thing?

If your reasons aren’t compelling enough, move on to the next next. If you can’t get excited about your next now, you’ll never succeed on days when motivation wanes.

Keep your why in mind to help drive you to your next reality.

Your next reality

Once you’re settled on your next thing, picture yourself having already achieved your next thing.

Take it in deeply, using all your senses. Feel it. You’ve reached your goal. You’re a success.

Now picture yourself doing those things required to get you there. Jump back to the feeling of completion.

You want to associate the actions required with the success. Win in your mind first. Then bring it to the physical world.

Stick your next out!

Yes, you got it right. We didn’t say “stick your neck out.” We said “next.”

Tell others. Then you’ll commit to it.

Our professional next is a new business we plan to launch shortly after the first of the year. It’s an extension of BIGG success. More details to follow.

What are You Planning for 2012?

calendarYou may think the title is a mistake. It isn’t. We meant to say 2012.

Everybody’s thinking about, talking about, writing about 2011. What your goals are for this year? What are your New Year’s resolutions?



BIGG success is life on your own terms. There are five elements of BIGG success; one of them is time.

What’s your horizon?
Time has many dimensions. One of them is your horizon.

For many people, the horizon is today. They live in the moment. That’s all well and good. You certainly need to do that sometimes.

However, the people who are already a BIGG success have a longer horizon. They live presently in the future.

Entrepreneuring = a series of projects
As we’ve said, BIGG success is life on your own terms. The “own” in that phrase is very important. You own your life.

You’re more than a manager marketing a brand. You’re not just a CEO who can cash out at any time. You’re the entrepreneur in charge of a very important enterprise – your life.

Any entrepreneurial enterprise can be viewed as a series of projects. You take on projects to get the business launched. You take on projects for customers. You take on projects to build critical infrastructure.

What successful people do
Talk to any really successful person about what they’re working on right now and you’ll probably hear that it is something due late this year or early next. Sure, they’re working today but it’s for a project scheduled to be completed later.

Think about movies … they often take years before we see the finished product. Or even television shows … as we’re watching this season’s Survivor, they’re filming the next season.

If every project in your portfolio is short-term, it’s unlikely you’ll ever reach BIGG success. You must extend your horizon and expand your vision. You must think longer and bigger.

Otherwise, you’ll end up stuck. You’ll never reach the next level of success. 

Sure, you’ll be busy. But, like George Jetson, you’ll be crying: Jane, stop this crazy thing … HELP … Jane!

What projects are in your pipeline?

A Formula for the Blues

unhappy It’s Monday of the last full week of January. You know what that means? It’s Blue Monday – the most depressing day of the year, according to Dr Cliff Arnall, a Cardiff University psychologist.



He devised a formula to find out when people are unhappiest. It’s based on many factors – the weather this time of the year in many parts of the developed world, Christmas bills coming in as we try to figure out how to pay them, our New Year’s resolutions starting to fall by the wayside, and more.

It’s been reported that fewer people went into debt this Christmas compared to prior years. So maybe it won’t be so bad this year. On the other hand, we get blasted daily with reports of layoffs, store closings and other bad news. Many people are feeling like they’re not in control of their own lives. So this may be a particularly blue Blue Monday.

Rock bottom up!

We can see the glass as half empty or half full. We could just sit around feeling sorry for ourselves. Or we could look at it this way – if today really is the most depressing day of the year, then it can only be better for the rest of the year!

It reminds us of J.K. Rowling’s address to last year’s Harvard graduates. She said that, before her success with Harry Potter, she reached rock bottom. She found it very liberating because she knew she had nowhere to go but up.

Dreamin’ and schemin’

That’s what we call our formula for getting over the blues. It works for just about any situation that you’re unhappy about. So use this to get back on track with that New Year’s resolution, for financial problems, and just about anything else. Well, it won’t help with the weather!

Step 1: Allow yourself to mentally escape. For just a little bit, stop thinking about where you are. Instead think about where you want to be. Picture it as clearly as you can. Then write it down.

This has helped us innumerable times. By focusing on where we want to be for a short time, our motivation returns. We find we have new energy to return to the problem that got us down in the first place. Now we have the strength to return to the present and move to the next step.

Step 2: Schedule your steps. With your written description from your mental escape in Step 1 in front of you, think about your current situation. What will it take to get from where you are to where you want to be? Write down every step that you will need to take, focusing of course only on things you can control.

Step 3: Take the first step. This is really the most important step. Taking even the smallest step helps you lose that feeling of powerlessness. It gives you a reason to pat yourself on the back. It gets positive energy flowing to solve your problem instead of being frozen by it.

This Word Helps You Keep Your Resolutions

The list itself doesn’t contain any real surprises:

  • lose weight
  • manage debt
  • save money
  • get a better job
  • get fit
  • eat right
  • get a better education
  • drink less alcohol
  • quit smoking now
  • reduce stress overall
  • reduce stress at work
  • take a trip
  • volunteer to help others

As we discussed this list, we realized that there is one word that can often make all the difference in keeping our resolutions.

That word is … No!

You can’t keep putting yourself, or your goals, on the back burner and expect anything to change. You have to say, “No!”

Say no to everything that doesn’t help you achieve your goals.

Say no and get fit

For example, assume your resolution is to “Get fit.” Depending on your commute to your preferred fitness center, it will take at least an hour every time you work out.

But it’s really important to you so you’re going to make time to do it.

Then a co-worker or a friend asks you to serve on a committee or join a club that has weekly meetings. Just say No!

Your “No” doesn’t have to be forever. It just has to be for right now while you fit (pun intended) exercise in your daily routine. Once you’ve made it a habit, then you can consider something else.

Say no and get out of debt

Another common resolution is to “Manage debt.” Of course, the first step is to stop getting further in debt.

Since this is really important to you, you’ll find ways to control your spending.

Two common things that hurt our budgets are major purchases and daily decisions. Get in the habit of saying no to things you don’t need so you stop getting further in debt and save money to pay your debt down.

No – it’s a negative word that will positively help you reach your goals!
