What are You Planning for 2012?

calendarYou may think the title is a mistake. It isn’t. We meant to say 2012.

Everybody’s thinking about, talking about, writing about 2011. What your goals are for this year? What are your New Year’s resolutions?

___

___

BIGG success is life on your own terms. There are five elements of BIGG success; one of them is time.

What’s your horizon?
Time has many dimensions. One of them is your horizon.

For many people, the horizon is today. They live in the moment. That’s all well and good. You certainly need to do that sometimes.

However, the people who are already a BIGG success have a longer horizon. They live presently in the future.

Entrepreneuring = a series of projects
As we’ve said, BIGG success is life on your own terms. The “own” in that phrase is very important. You own your life.

You’re more than a manager marketing a brand. You’re not just a CEO who can cash out at any time. You’re the entrepreneur in charge of a very important enterprise – your life.

Any entrepreneurial enterprise can be viewed as a series of projects. You take on projects to get the business launched. You take on projects for customers. You take on projects to build critical infrastructure.

What successful people do
Talk to any really successful person about what they’re working on right now and you’ll probably hear that it is something due late this year or early next. Sure, they’re working today but it’s for a project scheduled to be completed later.

Think about movies … they often take years before we see the finished product. Or even television shows … as we’re watching this season’s Survivor, they’re filming the next season.

If every project in your portfolio is short-term, it’s unlikely you’ll ever reach BIGG success. You must extend your horizon and expand your vision. You must think longer and bigger.

Otherwise, you’ll end up stuck. You’ll never reach the next level of success.

Sure, you’ll be busy. But, like George Jetson, you’ll be crying: Jane, stop this crazy thing … HELP … Jane!

What projects are in your pipeline?

Little Things Make a Bigg Difference

little_big.jpgBigg Success is life on your own terms. Today we want to focus on growth, one of the five elements of bigg success.

Little things can make a bigg difference on our path to bigg success. Oftentimes, they’re mostly attitudinal adjustments. We’ll discus six of these little things today.

___

___

Instead of taking an extra fifteen minutes, give an extra fifteen minutes.

Over the course of a year, if you were to show up fifteen minutes earlier and stay fifteen minutes longer, you’d have 120 more hours of productive time. That even allows for four weeks of vacation!

This doesn’t have to be work. It really depends on your objectives. You may get home fifteen minutes earlier, put an extra fifteen minutes into studying for that certification you want, or work on building relationships for an extra fifteen minutes a day.

Instead of telling someone about you, ask about them.

Ask your spouse or significant other about their day. Ask that person you just met about the work they do.

This makes a bigg difference in so many ways. It’s amazing how much we can learn from others. By letting the other person tell you about themselves, you learn about yourself and your world.

___

marylynnI find this ironic. You seem more interesting when you let the other person talk about themselves. They find you more interesting because you’re letting them talk.

___

___

georgeYou always tell me, Mary-Lynn, that the less I talk, the more interesting I am!

___

Instead of sitting back, lean forward in your chair.

This is somewhat related to the last one. One benefit is that you’ll stay awake! But the other benefit is that you will be more engaged with the person with whom you’re talking. You appear more interested. So they feel better about themselves.

Instead of walking around with a frown, flash your bigg beautiful smile!

When you smile, it makes people wonder what you’re up to!

Tony Robbins says: “Motion creates emotion.” Even when you don’t feel like smiling, by telling yourself to smile you’ll soon see the world in a different way. Even in the worst of times, we can find something to smile about.

Instead of seeing the bad, see the good.

This applies in so many ways. We’ll just discuss a couple.

How about the people around you – like your co-workers? Look for their good traits. See what they do well. Compliment them on it.

How about your company? Don’t focus on all the things you don’t like about it. Focus on the things your company is doing well.

Along that line …

Instead of focusing on the problem, think about solutions.

There are a lot of problem-finders in the world; we don’t have enough problem-solvers.

It’s easy to find a problem; it’s a lot harder to SOLVE IT. But bigg goal-getters know that’s how you find bigg success!

Success in a Can

can_of_success Today we want to talk about a miracle solution that we just discovered. You can use this magical elixir for any problem you may have.

___

___

If we were to create an infomercial for this wonderful product, we’d want Billy Mays, the spokesperson of all spokespersons, to be our pitchman. We can hear him now …

Billy Mays here with a product that I’m excited to tell you about. Success in a Can. If
you have problems staring you in the face; it will make them disappear without a trace.

For a demonstration, he could offer real-life example after real-life example.

So are you interested in knowing where you can buy this incredible product?

Well, it’s not sold in stores as the saying goes. You won’t find it online either. You see, it’s very exclusive. We can hear you now … you really want this product, don’t you? But there’s something you should know …

No one can get it for you. No one can give it to you. You have to get it yourself. But people who have used this product say that it is priceless.

So, we can hear you asking again … only more impatiently now … where can you find Success in a Can and how much it will cost?

Here’s the secret – you have to mix this magical solution yourself. The good news is that you already have all the ingredients.

Ingredient #1 – Self-awareness

Do you believe in yourself? We mean really truly believe deep down. Listen carefully to your talk – both your conversations with others and those internal chats you have with yourself.

How often “can” you? How many times “can’t” you?

Can’t is a limiting word. If you think you can’t, you’re right. And that’s just wrong!

Now we don’t think you should eliminate the word “can’t”, but you should be aware of it. You should limit its use to situations that don’t limit you. Because it reinforces what you truly believe.

Ingredient #2 – Self-assessment

Think about your strengths and your weaknesses. You may think that’s odd – why would you think about your weaknesses if you’re trying to limit the use of the word “can’t”?

That’s a good question. Let’s see if we can come up with a good answer …

It’s important to be realistic. Because Success in a Can doesn’t mean playing to your weaknesses. It means knowing what you’re best at. It also means working with other people doing what they’re best at because you know they can! There, how did we do?

Ingredient #3 – Focus

Focus on what you can do, not what you can’t do. Whenever you hear yourself saying that you “can’t” do something, quickly start thinking about what you “can” do about the situation. By focusing your thoughts on what you can do, you’ll feel more energy to work on the issue at hand.

Ingredient #4 – Reinforcement

When you wake up in the morning, tell yourself you can do it. When you face a difficult challenge, tell yourself you can find a way. When you see an opportunity, remind yourself that you can make it happen.

If you don’t believe in yourself, nobody will. Success in a Can does come with a price … you have to change the way you think. But if you do, you’ll pop the top for bigg success.

The Hero Behind the Hero

eagle Today we continue our series on heroes. Last time we talked about what makes a hero a hero.

___

___

Captain Chesley Sullenberger (Sully as we’ve come to know him) inspired this series. He is, of course, the pilot who landed his plane in the Hudson River to ultimately save over 150 lives.

But we haven’t heard much about the co-pilot on that fateful flight – Jeffrey Skiles. He, much like Sully, was a veteran of the industry as well. And let’s not forget the flight crew and also the passengers who stepped up to the challenge. The news coverage has largely ignored them too.

Heroes aren’t alone

We love our heroes. They are usually a single person. But a person usually doesn’t become a hero by themselves.

Which got us thinking about the Wind Beneath My Wings. Doesn’t that song seem particularly appropriate when thinking about heroes and airplanes? Pun fully intended!

___

marylynn
On the show, I had to try hard not to cry as we talked about the lyrics of this song.

___

___

georgeI tried not to admit that I’m a huge Bette Midler fan! But so was Johnny Carson … so I guess I’m in good company.

___

Unsung heroes

The song starts …

“It must have been cold there in my shadow, to never have sunlight on your face.
You were content to let me shine, that's your way. You always walked a step behind.”

This is the case with many heroes. There are the heroes we see. And for every hero that we see, there are many unsung heroes, working behind the scenes, that we never see.

___

marylynnWhen I was in radio, I did a segment called “Superstar Employee of the Month,” where people could nominate their co-workers. The nominations were always so heartfelt and touching. People often recognized those co-workers who seldom got any credit.

___

Plenty of work, very little credit

The song continues …

“So I was the one with all the glory, while you were the one with all the strain.”

___

georgeThis reminds me of something I heard my dad say a number of times about the employees of his business. “They do all the work and I get all the credit.” This is so true for many leaders. At least he recognized it!

___

We all have people behind us that help us succeed. And they often don’t get the credit they deserve. Just like the co-pilot and crew of US Airways Flight 1549.

Lifting us up

These unsung heroes, who do so much work for so little credit do much more than just support us.

___

marylynnMy favorite line of this song is in the chorus, “I can fly higher than an eagle, for you are the wind beneath my wings.” It shows how important some people are to us. They lift us up to heights we can’t achieve on our own, to levels we can hardly imagine.

___

A hero’s response

___

georgeWhen my dad passed away unexpectedly, I kept a journal for awhile. The chorus to this song was the feature of the very first entry. There wasn’t much left unsaid between the two of us. We had a great relationship, but I’m not sure that I ever told him that he was a hero to me. I think he knew, but I sure wish I had said it explicitly.

___

The song closes with the appropriate response of a hero …

“Thank you, thank you, thank God for you, the wind beneath my wings”.

Whether we feel like a hero or not, it’s important to understand that any success we achieve isn’t reached alone. There are people lifting us up every step of the way.

Don’t just think about how much you appreciate them. Tell them. To go back to the song one more time, it says it explicitly …

“It might have appeared to go unnoticed, but I've got it all here in my heart.
I want you to know I know the truth, of course I know it.
I would be nothing without you.”

We should do the same!

___

Do you have any idea how much we appreciate that you are part of our community? Well, let us just say, it means more to us than words can say. But we’ll try anyway:

You lift us up! Thank you, thank you …

Join us next time as we wrap up this series by discussing the hero within the hero. Until then, here’s to your bigg success!

Want to Succeed Bigg? Stop Working!

work Fred Gratzon, author of The Lazy Way to Success, had a great post recently called the Definition of Success. He says that you’re a success if you can “give from your abundance”.

.

.

.

georgeHe’s not just talking about money, but it reminded me of one of the guest speakers for my class. He said that his goal is to give away a million dollars in his lifetime. One of my students asked him why he set a goal for giving instead of a goal for how much he would keep. He said that he felt that, if he could afford to give away a million dollars, he knew he would be doing just fine!

.

Fred also said that a lot of people think you have to work hard to be a success. He disagrees. In fact, he thinks you have to avoid work to be successful.

The definition of work

This is what we found most interesting – how he defines “work”. He says you are working “if you’d rather be doing something else.”

So if you love what you do, it’s not work! You can spend countless hours at it, because you find joy in it.

.

marylynn We love what we do here at Bigg Success. Sure, we work hard by most people’s standards … it’s definitely not 9 to 5. But we found a way to work together doing what we love for a fantastic community of people. It’s not always easy, but it is fun … it doesn’t feel like work, at least not most of the time!

.

Blaze your own trail

A great example of this is a young man we talked with recently – Sean Aiken. His last year of college, Sean’s dad told him to find a career that he was passionate about. Like a lot of young people, Sean didn’t know what that was. So he decided to find out by working 52 jobs in 52 weeks!

Now he’s working on a documentary about the project and he’s writing a book. He found his passion by blazing a new trail.

.

georgeMy students are usually a pretty money-motivated group. They often go for the jobs that pay the most. The problem is it’s cyclical – the highest paying job now may not be the highest paying job in five years. So I encourage them to think about what they really enjoy doing and find a way to make a career of it. Now they’re set to rise to the top of their profession because it won’t feel like work.

.

.

marylynn Don’t accept the terms that the world sets for you. Don’t define yourself by other people’s terms. Use your imagination to create your own world.

.

As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “When you make a decision, the universe conspires to make it happen.” So make a decision to do what you love!
