Artificial Dissemination – A Tool for Bigg Success

spinToday we’ll wrap up our discussion about artificial dissemination. Last time, we talked about three dangers of misstatements and exaggerations.

There’s another side to artificial dissemination. It can also be a tool if used carefully and properly. We’ll look at two ways to do that.

___

___

Honest vs. Kind

Sometimes we face a battle. It’s not a battle between good and evil. It’s a battle between two competing forces for good. Should we be honest? Or should we be kind?

Picture this … your best friend just had a baby. He’s so proud that the buttons on his shirt are popping. He takes you to see the little guy. Now, the little guy is the ugliest baby you’ve ever seen. He’s so ugly you’re not even sure he’s human!

So your friend turns to you and says, “Isn’t he the best looking baby you’ve ever seen?”

Panic sets in. What do you say? Beads of sweat start forming on your forehead. Do you tell the truth? Or should you be nice?

Artificial dissemination can be used as a tool for kindness.

Authentic vs. “Fake it until you make it”

Now we want to talk about telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

That’s another battle which we must fight every day. We often hear that we should be authentic. Yet we also hear people say that you have to “fake it until you make it.”

___

george I’m authentic every day … when I first get up. If I wanted to be authentic, I would never shave!

___

___

marylynn
I wouldn’t wear any make-up!

___

It is important to be true to yourself. People can spot a fake. But “fake it until you make it” doesn’t necessarily mean being someone you’re not.

Artificial dissemination can be a tool for casting yourself in the best light.

We’ve talked before about the entrepreneurial roller coaster ride. But people like to do business with successful people. When you’re at the bottom of the ride, you don’t have to tell the world. Just confide in a few close friends or trusted advisors and project an image of success to the rest of the world.

The whole world doesn’t have to know the whole truth. In many cases, with most people, part of the truth will suffice just fine! You’re not on the witness stand for crying out loud!

___

marylynnI think with social media we sometimes broadcast things about ourselves, not remembering that hundreds or thousands, or hundreds of thousands, of people are going to see it.

___

___

george
You have to manage your reputation just like companies manage their reputations.

___

___

marylynnI remember seeing a tweet from a person I follow. She had just lost her job. I don’t remember what she said, but it was something that would have been better left unsaid.

___

___

george The stories you tell about yourself shouldn’t be fiction. But occasionally, you may think of them as part of a docudrama. You can put a positive spin on things. Sometimes that leads to bigg success!

Get More Done by Finding Your Energy Source

loveA lot of people report that they don’t have enough energy to do everything they want to do. Many people often feel tired before the day is through.

___

___

___

georgeMy dad used to describe it this way, “My get-up-and-go got up and went!”

___

___

marylynn I was at an event recently. A friend of mine is part of the staff of a non-for-profit organization. They had a bigg fundraising kickoff. It started at 6 in the morning and the whole purpose was to get people to stop for free coffee, a bagel, and a fun family pack. I got there a little after 6 and there was my friend, on the corner, hopping up and down hollering, “Free coffee” and I don’t even think she’d had any. I admired her energy. I think she’s a peppy person – she’s always positive, always smiling. But I also think she really loves what she does.

___

So your energy comes in part from being prepared mentally. But that’s not the whole story. You also have to be physically ready for the day. Because, for example, if you only get two hours of sleep night after night – no matter how much you might try to psyche yourself up – you’re going to run out of energy.

___

georgeI have a friend who is the most disciplined person I’ve ever met. He seems to have boundless energy. I’ve never seen him drink anything but water. I asked him what he does to get going in the morning. I knew he didn’t drink coffee, so I assumed he must chug a highly-caffeinated soft drink or two. Nope. He said he just runs about five miles!

___

Of course, if you constantly feel low on energy, it may be a sign of a deeper problem – a problem that demands your doctor’s attention.

A simple tool to find more energy

We always hesitate to suggest too much recording and tracking. It works, but it creates an additional demand on a schedule that’s already too demanding.

But we’ve found it helpful to keep an Energy Diary. We record the time of day, the activity and make comments about how we’re feeling. Then we’re able to look for consistencies – activities that boosted our energy level and things that squelched it.

___

marylynn I’ve felt tired today. I noticed that I got up earlier this morning than I did yesterday. But I went to bed at about the same time. I think I need to establish a more consistent sleeping pattern.

___

___

georgeAs we were writing this show, I told Mary-Lynn that I felt tired. Maybe it’s the subject! Seriously, I realized that I had been up for about five hours, but I had not eaten anything until about a half-hour ago. It hasn’t kicked in yet. I think I should eat more regularly so my energy stays up.

___

We like this because it’s completely personal. By tracking what you’re doing and whether you’re feeling energized or not, you can find your energy source so you get more done. Because if it works for you, it works!

Track Your Time with this Popular Toy

legosWe read a very interesting post by Michael Hunger at the Better Software Development blog. What we learned from Michael is that sometimes it pays to think inside the box! He uses Legos to track his time. You have to see his illustrations to really understand it. So go to his site and check it out!

——

——

His system

He puts a whole week on a single 8-peg by 16-peg base. He uses a different colored 1-peg by 8-peg piece for each day of the week. He breaks each hour into four 15-minute segments. So each row has a maximum of four blocks across, one for each fifteen minutes. If you work eight hours, you’ll have a max of eight rows high, one for each hour.

Then he assigns one of the nine colors to each project. He checks his start time and end time and then places a block for each fifteen minutes worked on that project. So if he worked on two projects in the first hour, for half-an-hour each, he would have a row with two colors in it, one color for each project.

The result

The overall result is that, at the end of each week, he can look back and see exactly what projects he worked on and how much time he spent on each one.

We loved how you could see what you worked on with a quick glance.  It really pops. It’s in 3D, so it brings time management to life. You can get a real sense of accomplishment by seeing exactly what you’ve worked on.

And it’s fun! Who doesn’t like playing with Legos?

In fact, Michael’s been using this system for four months and can only come up with one disadvantage – his co-workers keep coming into his office and disassembling his blocks!

Plan vs. actual

He points out that you could easily use this system to plan your week. You could determine what projects you need to work on and plan for how long it should take.

We thought it would be great to use one base for your plan for the week. Then use another one as Michael does to track your time. Then you could compare your plan vs. actual at a glance.

Identify time wasters

Instead of using the different colors for projects, consider using them for categories – the ways you spend your time. For example, one color could represent time at work, another could be for commuting time, yet another could be for watching television. You pick the categories. At the end of the week, you’d have a great visual of how you spent your time.

All kinds of other uses

There are a number of other ways to use Legos as a system. For example, why not track your diet. Use a different color for each food group and track the number of servings. You’d know at a glance if you have a balanced diet.

Why not track spending with Legos? Use different colors for different categories so you see where your money goes.

What are some ways you can think of to use Legos as a tool?
