The problems we face aren’t unprecedented. Our ancestors have taken on problems of similar scope. But we still shouldn’t underestimate the size of our current challenges.

As we look forward to the election here in the United States, we see only one solution to all of these problems. It can be described in one term.

That term doesn’t start with a D. Nor does it start with a R. The one word solution starts with an E:

Entrepreneurs are the key to solving the problems of the world.

We need entrepreneurs like never before:

We need entrepreneurs in the traditional sense of the word.

Entrepreneurs are the economic engine of any economy.

We see people living in poverty. More and more people are giving up. They have stopped looking for work.

The number of people in the labor market in the United States has hit a 30-year low. We’ve witnessed all-time highs in the number of people receiving government assistance, even affecting the most educated.

More and more good people are settling for a life of dependency.

Entrepreneurship is the answer. Yet startups are at
record lows.

And we are feeling the pain: two-thirds of all net new jobs
a
re created by small businesses. Most of those come from firms less than five years old.

And research shows that entrepreneurship begets entrepreneurs:

“…by far the most significant cause of entrepreneurial opportunities is prior entrepreneurial activity.”

Entrepreneurship creates opportunity for an expanding circle of people.

Yes, we need a growing, thriving entrepreneurial economy. We need to create an environment that nurtures it all over the world.

We need to unleash its power. It’s the prosperity solution. The only alternative is austerity.

So entrepreneurship is the single solution with the power to unite us.

We need more entrepreneurs now – to solve problems for customers, buy from suppliers, create jobs for the unemployed and underemployed, increase the tax base and build wealth for themselves and their investors.

These entrepreneurs will then fuel more entrepreneurship and wealth will continue to expand as one entrepreneurial firm spins off from another.

That’s an important note: The pie doesn’t get smaller for anyone. The pie doesn’t stay the same. The pie gets bigger.

But here’s another important note: Wealth is only created by entrepreneurs when they solve a problem or create an opportunity for their customers. Entrepreneurship makes people better off on all sides of the relationship!

We need more for-profit entrepreneurs AND non-profit entrepreneurs.

We need more entrepreneurial politicians.

Are you tired of the same old rhetoric election season after election season? We need politicians with fresh ideas, new alternatives and a BIGG vision.

We need entrepreneurial politicians who argue their own merits rather than just bashing their competition. Isn’t that one of first rules of sales?

Wouldn’t it be nice to see political contests conducted at a level of maturity at least equal to an election for Student Council President?

We need entrepreneurial politicians who under-promise and over-deliver – people who don’t make a promise in the first place if they don’t think they can make it so.

We need politicians who understand the order of value, as entrepreneurs do. First, you create value for others which then creates value for yourself.

Job security for a politician should come from serving constituents, not him- or herself. We know this goes against a politician’s nature, but it is the entrepreneur’s nature.

And what better way to serve your constituents than to create an environment for more entrepreneurship?

We need more entrepreneurial citizens.

The internet is connecting us like never before. It is flattening organizations and decentralizing operations.

As the pace of our lives increases, command-and-control is dying.

So why should we expect it to work with government?

As citizens, we need to understand that the major problems we face will only be solved through grassroots initiatives. We can’t just vote and be done. We must vote. But that’s not enough.

So the bottom line is: We need YOU!

We need you to participate. But more importantly, we need you to lead.

We need you to live up to your full potential. We need you to help others be a BIGG success. And in so doing, you too will reach BIGG success!

Do you think entrepreneurs are the key?

Should Entrepreneurial Leaders Manage by Consensus?

Does managing by consensus lead to BIGG SuccessWe saw a great study about Millennials [PDF] and how they would run the business of tomorrow. The researchers had two teams create a model company.

Neither of them selected a CEO. They chose to run the company by consensus.

No one person was in charge; ideas were. The best ideas ruled.

Great concept. Too bad it won’t work.

Entrepreneurial leaders should not manage by consensus.

Should you get your people involved in every way you can? Yes.

Do you want to listen to your people’s ideas? Of course.

Should every person in your organization have a voice? Absolutely.

But management by consensus is no different than management by committee. The name may have changed but the results remain the same.

In the worst case, decisions don’t get made. So the organization flounders.

Only slightly better – when decisions do get made, it takes longer. It’s the death knell in today’s fast-changing world.

The buck has to stop somewhere. All the kumbaya has to end. Someone has to take all the information and make a decision.

The process can be democratic but the decision-making can’t.

Your people should be given the opportunity to offer their input. They should know it is heard. It may even be acted upon. When it is, they should be given recognition.

Entrepreneurial leaders should focus less on reaching consensus. It takes too long.

Focus more on building consensus. Help your people understand the “why” behind the things you do in your organization. It leads to BIGG success!

How do you build consensus?

Entrepreneurial Leadership and Power

how a true leader finds power for BIGG SuccessThere’s a misunderstanding about power by many new entrepreneurial leaders. They come by this view honestly.

Leaders are often depicted barking out orders. Willing subordinates eagerly jump at every bark. They run out and bring the ball back to the leader.

It doesn’t work that way anymore. Did it ever?

Maybe at one time – when people were relegated to a monotonous job, stamping out item after item.

All brawn, no brain. Just do, don’t think.

Success today comes from thinking and doing. You may need your people’s muscles too. But you definitely need their minds.

You need them to believe in you and your vision. You need them fully engaged. Then you’re powerful.

So one sign of power for an entrepreneurial leader is:

You don’t have to demand. You can ask.

You’re even more powerful if you don’t have to ask. They volunteer.

Real power isn’t about about squeezing every ounce of humanity out of your people. It’s not hand-to-hand combat. It’s not about conquering. It’s not warfare.

True power comes when you win hearts and minds. There’s an old saying that we just love, although we’re not sure of its origin. We keep it posted in our office so we see it every day.

Touch my mind – you have my thoughts.
Touch my heart – you have my love.
Touch my soul – you have my passion.
Touch all three and you have me.

Great entrepreneurial leaders appeal to all three. That’s how they get their voluntarily pushing to achieve the shared vision.

It’s because it’s more than a vision. It’s a cause. And it leads to BIGG success!

Why Hard Work is NOT the Key to Success

achieve BIGG Success without hard workAsk just about anyone and they’ll tell you – hard work is the key to success.

What do you think? Does hard work lead to success? More specifically, will you make more money by working hard?

We vote “No”. Now before you dismiss us, please permit us to explain our rationale.

BIGG success is life on your own terms. The five elements of BIGG success are money, time, growth, work and play.

Four of the five elements are directly involved with the subject at hand – money, time, work and play. Growth is required to understand and, more importantly, live out the concept.

The secret to succeeding without hard work

There’s only one way to succeed without working hard: Spend your time doing work that seems like play.

When you do this, you naturally work more. As you work more, your skills improve. As your skills improve, you make more money.

Now we’ve completed the circle of the five elements of BIGG success!

Of course, it may not all seem like play – especially at first. In the main, you’re doing the work you love. But there may be some parts you’d rather not do.

Fortunately, there’s a simple remedy.

More money and more options

The remedy is to set aside a portion of this newfound money. Use it to hire help.

It may range from a maid to an accountant. Pay others to do the thing you don’t want to do.

Buy more time to do your work which seems like play.

Success doesn’t come from hard work.

The key to success is endurance. You have to persevere in spite of all the inevitable obstacles.

If your work seems like play, you’ll be better prepared to endure. It leads to BIGG success!

Why You Should Mix Business with Pleasure

your amygdala and your social life | BIGG SuccessThere’s this teeny tiny part of your brain – it sits at the base of your brain – that apparently reveals a lot about your friends. It’s called the amygdala.

Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston found that people with a bigger amygdala have more friends. This almond-shaped area is more than twice the size in people who are more social.

Perhaps the most striking part of this research was the difference between the two groups:

  • Less social people had less than 15 people with whom they had regular contact
  • People with a bigger amygdala had as many as 50 acquaintances

The researchers aren’t sure of the direction of the relationship. Does a bigger amygdala lead to more friends or do more friends lead to a bigger amygdala?

The lead researcher said that the brain is a “use it or lose it organ.” So she postulated that it expands with the number and the nature of your relationships.

A simple way to have more friends

The thing we found most interesting was a BIGG tip about how to get more friends: People with more friends tended to have more complex relationships.

In other words, they mix business with pleasure!

And yet we’ve heard our whole lives – don’t mix business and pleasure. Wrong! You should mix the two.

It’s consistent with the BIGG idea behind BIGG success – synergy. We used to think it was essential to separate people into two camps – professional and personal.

However, many people miss a lot of opportunities by drawing this line between work and play. You can have better relationships with more people if you erase that line.

The relational power of social media

While the researchers didn’t look at online connections, we think this actually highlights one of the best things about social media. We get to see the whole person now.

We may meet someone in a business setting. But once we connect online, we can learn about their families, their hobbies, their interests and more.

Social media will help you keep track of what’s going on in the lives of more people. By watching status updates in your stream, you can pull something personal up with business colleagues.

It deepens the relationship instantly. The people in your life know you’re paying attention to them.

It helps create synergy which leads to more fun AND better results. Now that’s BIGG success.

Have you found that social media helps you keep up with more people?
