4 Steps to Achieve Your Goals More Easily

Sometimes a long-term goal can seem elusive. You know it’s important to you, but you can’t get too excited about it because it seems so bigg and distant. Obviously, the solution to this problem is to break it down to daily activities. But with really bigg goals, that can seem difficult, so we often just don’t do it.

Sometimes thinking more short-term helps you get the focus you need for the long-term. It helps you unclutter your mind so you move even faster to the life of which you dream.

So here’s a remedy – with the picture of your ultimate destination clearly in your mind, ask yourself these four steps:

Step 1: What do I want to accomplish in the next 90 days?
By zeroing in on the next quarter, you relieve yourself of the vagueness and the distance of the long-term goal. You focus on what has to happen in the near-term. This often gets your juices flowing and ramps up your progress toward your ultimate goal.

Step 2: Where do I want to be at the end of the first month?
Now that you have your 90-day goal clearly set, determine what you can (and will) get done in the first 30 days. Obviously, you would like to knock off about one-third of your long-term goal. You may even consider front-loading it a little so you give yourself a little break (i.e. reward) toward the end of the 90 days.

Step 3: What needs to be done this week?

With that done, you’re ready to break it down further. Look at what you want to accomplish this month and break it down by the week. Once again, consider front loading your scheduled activities a little bit and giving yourself a little break toward the end of the week.

Step 4: What’s important today?

Finally, break it down by day. With your weekly plan in front of you, set goals for each day of the week. Give yourself a little breathing room for those unexpected situations that demand your time.

Of course, at the beginning or ending of each day, you’ll want to review what needs to be accomplished for the week and plan out your day. Ditto for each week and month. Then just repeat this process every 90 days until you’re sitting on that beach in the Caribbean!

This Nugget Is Worth a Quarter

Years ago, I worked part-time as a telemarketer to earn some additional income.
The goal was to set appointments for a sales representative to meet with the person on the other end. We called for a few hours at a time, had a lunch break and called again. In addition to a base salary, I earned bonuses (a quarter) for every confirmed appointment. This could result in up to an additional dollar per hour on a particularly successful day.

I lasted exactly three months. One day, I pulled into the office complex parking lot and a feeling of such aversion and dread came over me that I just could not work one more day at that job. I went in and quit on the spot.

I figure, in only three months, that I must have called a few thousand businesses and homes. As a result, I have a well-earned appreciation for the difficult job it is to call people out of the blue to sell them something they are not looking to buy.

In my opinion, the best way to handle a telemarketer you do not want to speak with is to cut him or her off at the earliest possible time with a, "No thank you," and hang up. This allows the caller to move on to the next prospect without a lot of time wasted.

Think about it, if you let the caller get to the end of a really long speech and say “No”, who benefits?

You? Nope. You wasted a lot of time listening to a spiel.

The telemarketer? Definitely not. You got someone's hopes up and then lost that guy or gal their quarter.

Just last week I answered a sales call at work. I took my own advice and politely ended the conversation quickly. Even in my work today, I have used knowledge from that less-than-perfect job. 

Think about what nuggets of wisdom you learned from former jobs, part-time or otherwise. You may not realize the important lessons you took away with you, even from those short-lived or terrible work experiences.

You'll be surprised at the little (and big) ways they have impacted or influenced things you do today. And that in itself is worth at least a quarter!

Are Face-to-Face Meetings a Thing of the Past?

We live in a socially connected world. We develop and maintain relationships electronically. LinkedIn. FaceBook. Twitter. And hundreds of more ways to meet and greet people online.

We send text messages, instant messages, chat online or e-mail back and forth. These forms of communication have reduced the number of phone calls in which we engage.

And face time … well, it’s not gone the way of the dinosaur, but who really needs to meet face-to-face?

We all do!

All of the communication tools at our disposal are valuable. However, nothing can replace in-person conversations for richness. We can build higher quality relationships faster when we meet face-to-face.

When we meet in-person, we can see the whole conversation. Body language, facial expressions, vocal inflections. We get the entire dynamic.

We don’t have access to those things when our conversation is electronic. We even miss a lot of it with a phone call. Nothing replaces meeting in-person.

Of course, many of our conversations can be handled with the new methods of communication. But don’t be shy about meeting in person when the situation calls for it. You’ll probably find that you accomplish more than you can with any other means.

A Short Pencil is Better than a Long Memory

The ability to absorb and act upon new information often makes the difference between success and bigg success. One of the best ways to do this is to become a prodigious note taker.

There’s an old saying, “A short pencil is better than a long memory!”

When you write it down, you not only have it available as a reference, you also are more likely to remember it in the first place. So you’re able to absorb and act upon the information better than someone who doesn’t take notes.

So when you’re going to meet with someone – in person or on the phone – take notes!

It’s amazing how many people don’t take advantage of this simple technique that makes such a bigg difference!

Set up yourself apart – take notes!

Take notes when you’re meeting with a group. Take notes when you’re meeting with a single person.

Some people don’t think it’s worth the time. They have it backwards.

It’s a waste of time to invest time in a meeting and then forget most of what you’ve learned. So take notes so you remember what you learned and you have a ready reference in case you forget!
