It’s easy to make New Year’s Resolutions. It’s much more difficult to keep them. Yet how you make them has a lot to do with whether or not you’ll keep them.

The secret is in understanding the power of one. Once you do – and you put it into practice – you’re virtually guaranteed to keep your New Year’s Resolutions. Here’s what we call the seven powers of one:

One quarter for your New Year’s Resolutions
A year is too long. What would you like to change in the next quarter? 90 days is close enough to keep your motivated.

One New Year’s Resolution
Many people create a list of New Year’s Resolutions. You will have one. One thing to work on right now. Once you’ve got it down, you can move on to another one.

One reason for your New Year’s Resolutions
Most people never really think about this. You know what your New Year’s Resolution is. Why is it so important for you to keep it? You need one compelling reason to keep you motivated.

One change for your New Year’s Resolutions
If you don’t do anything different, you can’t expect anything different. What is one small change you will make? Master it and then make another change until you’ve accomplished what you want.

One day for your New Year’s Resolutions
We started with 90 days, rather than a year. But even that’s too much once you start acting on your desire. Focus on keeping your New Year’s Resolution today. Whether you succeed or not, try again tomorrow.

One New Year’s Resolutions buddy
It’s hard to succeed alone. Find a friend who is trying to keep New Year’s Resolutions. It doesn’t have to be the same as yours. You can still buck each other up when needed.

New Year’s Resolutions are won in one weak moment
You will face moments of weakness. You will be tempted. Remind yourself of your one compelling reason. Reach out to your New Year’s Resolutions buddy. It leads to BIGG success!

We’ve put our BIGG spin on the labels by making them all start with “w”. So here we go – three keys to setting goals for success.


Think what.

  • What do you want to change?
  • What do you want to improve?
  • What do you want to make better?

Dr. Lopez calls this “goals thinking”. You define what you want by starting with where you are.


Think about your “what” long and hard o you discover many “ways” to get it. Dr. Lopez calls this “pathways thinking”.

  • If there’s only one way to reach your goal, you may want to rethink it.
  • You need contingency plans.


  • Do you have the means to achieve what you want?
  • If not, can you get it?

It starts with your own time and energy:

  • Will you commit the time, effort and energy to get what you want?
  • If you can’t say “Yes” honestly and enthusiastically, pick another goal!

But it goes beyond you. For example, what about money:

  • Will it take an investment of money to get what you want?
  • If so, do you have it?
  • If not, do you know where you can get it?
  • Or do you know someone who would know?

You’ll also want to think about your own strengths and weaknesses:

  • Are there skills required that you don’t have?
  • If so, will you commit to developing them?
  • Or do you know someone who has them?
  • Are they available to help you?
  • At this point, you may need to go back to the money questions – How much will their help cost?

The full combination

These three keys interdependently. You need the full combination to unlock hope so you move forward on your goals for BIGG success.

Most people sort of whimsically think about the “what”. In most cases, even that’s not really thought through thoroughly enough.

For the few that do, even fewer go to the next two…

Yet that’s where you should make the greatest investment – in determining the ways and making sure you have the wherewithal, you have the resources required or can get them.


But here’s another BIGG spin – “Why?”

Before you proceed past the “What” to goal-setting for your BIGG success, think about your motivation for your goal.

Your “Why” gives you the resiliency you’ll need to keep pushing when things get tough.

It leads to BIGG success!

2 Tips to Make a New Year Resolution You Will Keep

[George] “I remember one clearly. I was in grade school – I think fourth grade. The main item on the menu that day was a ham salad sandwich.

Most of us weren’t fans of ham salad, so we weren’t eating them. But one of my friends said he loved ham salad.

He quickly devoured the one on his plate. So another one of my friends handed his sandwich over. It was gone in no time.

But it didn’t stop there. Everybody started dumping their ham salad sandwiches on my friend’s plate.

And it became a contest. How many sandwiches could he eat?

He ended up eating 17 half-sandwiches – in other words, 8½ sandwiches total!

And the final part of the story: Lunch ended. We went back to class. It wasn’t long before my friend made a mad dash for the bathroom.

Yes, he tossed his ham salad!”

So what does ham salad have to do with making New Year resolutions? We’ll share two things:

Don’t bite off more than you can chew

Or should we say digest? We humans tend to make sweeping changes. We want immediate results.

But BIGG success is about entrepreneuring your life. Entrepreneurs – especially in the early stage – don’t see immediate results. They only see what they’re doing to achieve the results they want. So…

Think like an entrepreneur!

Shift your focus away from results to activities.

If you get the activities right, the results will take care of themselves.

For an easy example, let’s say you want to lose weight. Instead of putting yourself on a starvation diet, change one thing. For instance, if you eat a candy bar in the middle of the day, substitute a piece of fruit.

If you’re not exercising at all, don’t try to exercise for an hour every day. Start with fifteen minutes or so a couple of times a week.

Research shows that it takes between two weeks to a month or more for a habit to form. As you form one habit, you can start working on another one.

Small bites lead to BIGG success day after day, habit after habit.

Don’t let other people stuff you full

They have their own agenda. But you have your own. After all, BIGG success is life on your own terms!

So before you make a New Year resolution, ask a very important question:


And then expand on it:

Why is it important to you?

Why is it more important than other resolutions you might make?

These questions help establish your motivation. There will be times when it will be hard to keep your resolution. You will feel like giving up on it at times.

You must understand the reason underlying your resolution.

Don’t just think about a New Year resolution.

Feel the difference it will make.

So to make New Year resolutions you will keep, set your own agenda and take baby steps. It leads to BIGG success!

3 tips for New Year Resolutions | BIGG SuccessAs this year gives way to next, many people are thinking about New Year resolutions.

BIGG success is life on your own terms. And there’s one term to keep in mind as you make your New Year resolutions if you want to keep them.

That word is…too.

Here are three reasons people don’t keep their resolutions, all involving the word “too”. As you’ll see, they all have one underlying theme:

Keeping your New Year resolutions has a lot to do with making them.

Too little motivation

Many people fail to keep the resolutions they make because of a lack of motivation. As you think about a possible New Year resolution, ask yourself a very important question: Why?

Why is it important to achieve this one thing? You need a compelling “why” in order to maintain the motivation to keep your resolution.

Think “must”, not “want”. Know why you must achieve any resolution you make.

Too many resolutions

Another reason that many people fail to keep their resolutions is an easy one to fix. They simply make too many of them.

Don’t plan to go on a diet, start exercising, stop smoking and drinking all in one fell swoop. Limit the number of resolutions you make to one or two – perhaps one personal and one professional or one fitness-related and one financial resolution.

Too much change too quickly

Yet one more reason many people fail to keep their resolutions is they make sweeping changes. BIGG success is the result of sequential small changes.

So if you plan to go on a diet, don’t go from feast to famine. Instead, change one habit at a time.

For example, substitute a piece of fruit for that candy bar in your mid-afternoon snack. Once that becomes a habit – plan on two weeks to a month – make another change.

Little by little, you’ll see the BIGG change you want. Take time to celebrate each victory along the way. It leads to BIGG success!

Before You Give Up on Your New Year Resolution

Are you one of them? If so, we want to share five steps to take before you stop trying to achieve this goal.

Ask “why”

Ask yourself why you made the resolution in the first place. You had a good reason, right?

If not, go ahead and give up on it. But if so, remind yourself of the reason behind it.

Live success

Now picture yourself having already achieved it. Don’t just see it.

Experience it in your mind. With all your emotions. How do you feel?

You’re struggling to win in the real world. So live the success you hope to achieve in your mental world.

It’s where all victories begin. Now use this motivation to inspire you to press on.

Ask “why” again

Now ask yourself why you’re struggling. In fact, don’t just ask it once.

Ask “why” five times. It will help you get to the root of the problem.

Maybe you were too ambitious. Back down a little.

Maybe you’re discouraged. You had done so well. But yesterday you fell off the wagon. You’re only human. That was then; this is now.

Maybe you were tempted. How can you remove the temptation in the future?

Instead of just giving up, work on finding out why and then correct it. As you focus on a solution, you’ll feel more energy to keep going.

Reach out

Too many people fail because they go it alone. Don’t make that mistake.

Reach out to people who care about you. If you can’t think of anyone, tell us about it.

Win today

You’re a BIGG goal-getter. That can be a stumbling block.

Just think about today. What do you need to do today to keep your resolution?

Then forget about everything else. Don’t worry about tomorrow, or next week, or next month.

Just focus on doing it today. It leads to BIGG success.
