How to Be Less Happy and More Anxious

disconnect from smartphones for BIGG Success
Is your smartphone making you less happy and more anxious? George & Mary-Lynn discuss a study that says it does on The BIGG Success Show.

Thanks to smartphones, we are constantly connected to our friends, our family, and our work. As a result, we are less happy and more anxious.

A new Kent State University study of college students shows those who spend hours each day online, texting or talking on cellphones are more anxious, less happy and get lower grades. The students who were “less addicted” to checking their phones were better off.

Speaking of addiction, another study shows that many people suffer from anxiety if they lose or forget their phone, even if only for a few minutes. That rush of anxiety and fear some feel once they realize their disconnected is called nomophobia -as in no-mo(bile) phone-phobia.

How do we break our addiction to technology? It won’t be easy. According to a Pew Research Center survey, for the first time, a majority of American adults (56%) own smartphones. And people are checking them everywhere: while watching TV, at the movies, at the dinner table, in church, in bed, and while driving.

How to Feel Happier and Less Anxious

Do we really have to talk, text, tweet or post so much? No we don’t.

Andrew Lepp, one of the researchers in the Kent State study says, “You need time to be alone with your thoughts, and recover from the daily stressors in a way that doesn’t involve electronic media.”

Ways to Disconnect:

  • Meditate
  • Go for a walk without your headphones
  • Read an old-fashioned hardback book
  • Do some household chores
  • Journal with pen and paper

Quiet time lets your mind rest. Stress diminishes, attention and memory improve, endorphins are released. Your creative process is allowed to work. You can explore meaningful thoughts which can provide important direction in your life.

Use this time to refresh, and realize it will take practice to achieve. To get started, try to dedicate at least fifteen minutes a day for quiet time. Keep track of the days you do this. Pay attention to your stress levels on the days you unplug, versus the days you don’t.

It’s your choice! You can be constantly connected and feel less happy and more anxious. Or, you can disconnect for a short time every day to feel happier and more at ease, which leads to BIGG Success!

Will you commit to disconnecting daily? What will you do with your quiet time?

The Value of Bumps in the Road

bump in the road sign

Value the bumps in the road on your journey to BIGG Success. Listen to George & Mary-Lynn discuss this on The BIGG Success Show podcast. Click PLAY (Duration 4:25)

BIGG Success is life on your own terms. It means choosing your path, and putting up with all the bumps in the road that come along while on your journey.

If you feel like the road you’re on is getting too bumpy, take some time to listen to the other people in your life. You’ll hear them talk about their bumps too. No path is bump free.

The Bumps Others Face

[Mary-Lynn] One day I was feeling a little beat up as an entrepreneur. The work is never done, and the burden of uncertainty can be incredibly stressful. Sometimes it chips away at my confidence. Then, throughout the week, I heard other people talk about their bumps in the road. It’s not that misery loves company, it just really put things into perspective.

We heard a professional that we admire lament how she loves her job and is very good at it, but she keeps getting passed over for promotion because there seems to be a political line to the top.

A successful entrepreneur talked with us about how she’s having a very hard time getting her team motivated to take initiative.

A close friend was hired by a company to give expert advice, unfortunately he’s frustrated because they won’t implement the ideas he presented to help them grow.

Another friend has to deal with a terrible manager at work who plays head games.

The bottom line is that you set the terms, BIGG Success sets the price.

The Value of Your Bumps

The bumps in the road are part of the price. The bumps may be stress, feeling underappreciated, struggling to get others to work as hard as you, the difficulty of getting people to see it your way, or dealing with unqualified managers.

But there’s a reason why you put up with the bumps. There’s something you absolutely love about what you’re doing: the people you get to connect with, the profession, the thoughtful advice you get to offer, the pride of ownership.

When the bumps in the road are slowing you down, realize that you aren’t alone. Think about what really made you choose this path. What makes this worth it for you? What is it that you truly value about the lessons you’re learning along the way? Then tighten up your laces and continue on. It leads to BIGG Success.

Dealing with Disappointment

overcoming disappointment for BIGG SuccessYou work hard, day after day.
But sometimes you feel like you have little to show for it.
Disappointment.

You outperform others, time after time.
Yet they get rewarded.
Disappointment.

You do everything you’re supposed to do.
To no avail.
Disappointment.

You crave BIGG success with all your heart and all your soul.
Heck, even just plain, old, ordinary success would do.
But it eludes you.
Disappointment.

You feel your heart sink to your toes.
That comes right after the kick in the gut.
It hurts. You hurt. All over.
Disappointment.

You’re exhausted – physically, mentally, and emotionally.
Sleep. Maybe that’s what you need.
But you wake up to the same reality.
Disappointment.

How do you deal with disappointment?

There are a number of ways. We’ll share three thoughts in our time today.

Be grateful

Sounds odd, doesn’t it? But you have lots of things to be happy about.

Start with you. Be thankful for how awesome you are.

You’re a winner. You know it.

You may feel a little down, but you’re not out! No disappointment can do that to you.

You will win. You will get what you want. You will reach BIGG success.

It’s only a matter of time.

Grow stronger

Don’t lose your belief in the underlying magic in the world.

Don’t give up on your belief in the forces that will lead to your ultimate victory.

BIGG success is a destination. But it’s also a journey.

See disappointment for what it is – an opportunity to grow stronger. Seize that opportunity so you’re ready for bigger and better things to come.

Look for a sign

A beautiful flower may bloom from the seeds of disappointment. Sure, you feel like the color is gone from your world right now.

But keep the faith. You will create a colorful life. Disappointment may be giving you a sign.

It may be telling you that you’re on the wrong track.
You need to do something else.

It could be saying that you’re trying to do too much.
You need to focus.

Remain open to your intuition. It will help you determine your best path.
Reach out to your support group to see what they think.
Be willing to adapt if necessary.

We’ll close with our own paraphrase of a passage from The Science of Getting Rich, by Wallace Wattles. This is the book The Secret is based on.

You may expect a certain thing at a certain time. If it doesn’t come, you may feel like you failed. But there is no need to feel this way. Keep the faith and you will find that it only appeared to be a failure.

Keep doing those things which successful people do. Disappointment today leads to even more success tomorrow that you would have ever expected.

Soon you will see that the apparent failure led you to BIGG success!

How do you deal with disappointment?

Destination BIGG success

BIGG success is a destination. You create a vision of the life you want. Then you start driving to it.

Hour by hour…

Day by day…

Week by week…

Month by month…

Quarter by quarter…

Year by year…

…you strive for BIGG success. More specifically, you push to get to the next milestone.

The ups and downs of BIGG success

But it can be challenging to get from where you are to where you want to be.

Frustration.

Stress.

Doubt.

Fear.

Joy.

Faith.

Confidence.

Success!

They’re all part of the journey.

The ups are easy. You can do no wrong. You are invincible. The world is your oyster.

The down times? Well, the only easy thing is quitting.

The high cost of quitting

Yet quitting isn’t easy. Because you have to live with it for the rest of your life.

You will always wonder what might have been. You can’t bear the thought.

It’s the reason you are an entrepreneur. Failure was acceptable. Not trying – well, just the thought of not going for it caused that feeling in the pit of your stomach.

Yes, it was scary. Yes, people said you wouldn’t make it.

But you didn’t care. You had to go. You had to try. You could feel in the depths of your soul that you were put on this earth to do something special. And by gosh, you were going to do it.

So you did.

But today sucked. Again.

You feel like you’ve been hit by a truck. You’re exhausted. You’re discouraged.

And it would be so easy to give up.

But you know you won’t. Because you’re a BIGG goal-getter. So you have to see this thing through. Because it’s what you were meant to do.

The victory is in the challlenge

And then you realize something important…you already are a BIGG success.

You can’t control the result. You can only control the activity.

And today – just like yesterday and every day before – you gave it everything you had. So you’re a BIGG success.

Because, as George Moriarty said, “Who can ask more a man than giving all within his span? Giving all, it seems to me, is not so far from victory.”

Then it hits you – the victory is in the challenge!

BIGG success is a journey

Sure, BIGG success is a destination. But it’s also a journey.

And every single day, you’re learning new things and developing new skills. It’s growth – one of the five elements of BIGG success along with money, time, work and play.

Money and time are your two resources; work and play your two opportunities. Growth bridges the chasm.

Growth starts as an opportunity. You’re capitalizing on it. You’re growing.

By growing – by gaining new knowledge and insight, by adding skills and experience – you’re developing the skills to get past ANY problem you face.

Growth is becoming a resource. By discovering how to overcome any problem, you’re also learning how to triumph over EVERY problem you will ever face.

Yes, you WERE a BIGG success today. And Destination BIGG success is just around the corner!
