Today, on The BIGG Success Show, we continued the conversation even further. We talked about how to fund your passion. Here’s a summary of that discussion.
This series of shows was inspired by the story of Geoffrey Owens, best known as the son-in-law on The Cosby Show. He was seen bagging groceries at a Trader Joe’s.
It seems a lot of people these days feel better about themselves by mocking others. But, he argued, working at Trader Joe’s helped him pay the bills while he continued to do what he loves to do: acting and teaching.
The good news is…good prevailed – he got an acting gig. So now he can follow his passion full-time. But his story inspired us to think about how to fund your passion.

We talk a lot about finding your passion here at BIGG Success. But passion is only part of the equation if you want to make it your life’s work.
You have to find a group of people with a need for it. In other words, you need to find a market in other words.
That’s where you find your purpose in life – where your passions intersect with a market.
The secret rarely shared
But there’s something we often neglect to mention. And we’re not the only ones. Most people never talk about it. So we want to share this secret that often gets overlooked:
You may not find your purpose. It may find you.
A wrong turn leads to a BIGG discovery
You may take a wrong turn and run right into it. That’s what happened with Luma.
She was on her way home from work one day when she took a wrong turn. She wound up in the parking lot of an apartment complex. She was moved by what she saw through her car window.
A group of kids were playing soccer. Well, kind of. They were using rocks for goals. They were barefoot.
Now there’s a part of the story we haven’t told you yet. As fate would have it, she was a soccer enthusiast.
She played as a kid. She participated in intramural soccer in college. She had even coached a girls’ soccer time after graduation, according to Wikipedia.
BIGG ideas start small and simple
So she had a BIGG idea. It started small and simple as they often do.
A few days later she returned with a soccer ball. The kids rushed over to her immediately. She struck a deal – they could have the ball if she could play with them.
She knew these kids looked different. She had seen kids like this in her home country, Jordan, and other places. But never in the U.S.
She came to learn that they were children of refugees. They and their families were victims of persecution in war-torn areas of the world.
Some of them had witnessed terrible brutalities, like a mom or grandma being raped. This was one of 350 such communities the U.S. government has set up for these escapees.
These kids were poor. They were having trouble fitting in.
She realized that a soccer team would help them feel like they belonged. So she used her own money to form The Fugees, the name chosen for the team. She struck a bargain for some t-shirts that served as uniforms.
But she quickly realized that soccer wasn’t enough. These kids – many of them teenagers – couldn’t read or write. Neither could their parents.
So she quit her job and started Fugees Academy. She found her purpose in life – giving these kids an education.
The vision expands
And she still has BIGG dreams. In fact, her vision has expanded.
She purchased 19 acres that were in foreclosure. She purchased the land with donations.
Now she’s raising $5 million to build the real deal – a school for kids in Grades 6 – 12. But more than that, she hopes to be a model for educating refugee kids all over the country.
She took a wrong turn to find her purpose in life. Now she’s making a BIGG difference.
You can too. Keep your eyes and ears open to find your life’s work.
Because you may run right into your purpose, even if you’ve made a wrong turn. It may just lead you to BIGG success!
