Here in the Midwest, we got a real blast of winter yesterday. Many schools were closed. So were a number of businesses.

Remember snow days as a kid? If you live in a cold-weather area, you almost certainly do. Weren’t they the best?

You were supposed to go to school, but the night before or the morning of, you turned on the local TV news or tuned into your favorite radio station to find out if you had a day off.

Work Out Anytime Anywhere

Work Out Anytime Anywhere

Work Out Anytime Anywhere

Work out anytime, anywhere thanks to this entrepreneur’s BIGG idea. Click PLAY to hear George & Mary-Lynn talk with Shay de Silva on The BIGG Success Show Podcast (Duration 7:22)

Shay de Silva is a Certified Personal Trainer and Fitness Nutrition Specialist. A few years ago, when she couldn’t find a workout program that fit her busy lifestyle, she decided to make her own! Shay turned her passion for creating fun and effective workouts into Fast Fitness To Go – a company that gives everyone the freedom to have an amazing workout anytime, anywhere.

George and I are always so inspired by people who take their passion and turn it into a business, and one of the best places to look is problems you have of your own

G – Shea tell us about the problems you solved with fast fitness to go

S – I had been working as a consultant for a few years and I was traveling a lot. I was jet-lagged I was in hotel rooms I was in meetings all day. In the past I relied on my morning work out to keep me calm and focused, but now things are starting to fall apart I was tired cranky, and I was gaining weight and I didn’t know what to do. So I Googled and checked YouTube looking for a workout plan and some things seemed to work for a day or two but nothing really seemed to work with my schedule.

After struggling with that for a couple of years I just couldn’t take anymore so I got certified as a personal trainer and I made a work out for myself that I could use while I was traveling. Then I started sharing my workouts with other people and it started growing from there and that’s really how I got started.

How to Find Time to Work Out Anytime Anywhere

M – It seems like were pulled in so many directions every day these days it’s hard to have a scheduled set time to work out how do you overcome that?

S – You don’t need to. I used to think that I had to be at the gym for an hour every day. And when that didn’t work anymore I stopped doing anything altogether. so I think getting out of that mindset of “all or nothing” is key.

G – Sinstead of focusing on routine you focus on getting some activity in for the day.

S – Exactly. And that’s especially important when you’re growing your own business. You have meetings to schedule, your trying to meet other people’s schedules as we’ll – so it’s especially important for people who don’t have a normal 9-to-5 routine.

Work Out Anytime Anywhere for BIGG Benefits

G – Are there actually benefits to fitness for business in itself?

S – According to studies, people who exercise regularly earn more money. The study I saw said 9% more. That’s a pretty big chunk of change for your average business!

G – We often think: I need to get that proposal out, or I need to call that client so that I can make more money instead of exercising. But what you’re saying is taking time to exercise can actually help us make more money!

S – Yes plus some of your best creative ideas will come while you’re engaging in physical activity – maybe that problem that you haven’t been able to solve comes to you. There’s just something about moving your body that seems to help other parts of the brain as well.

The Workout Anytime Anywhere Mindset

M – It’s hard to get yourself to stop working to go exercise. So how do you get yourself past that mental block?

S – That happens to everyone even me. The other day when I didn’t feel like exercising I just turned on one of my favorite songs and just started dancing so that I started moving and then after five minutes I was able to do something else, and so on. And one of my favorite tips for people who haven’t worked out in a while is to print out a calendar and keep track. Give yourself a star every time you do some form of physical activity and use that as a motivator.

tilt-a-whirl

Are You Riding a Teeter Totter or a Tilt-A-Whirl Through Life?

teeter-totter

Click PLAY to listen to this post! Hear George & Mary-Lynn – and some some fun sounds to go along with this subject – on The BIGG Success Show Podcast. (Duration 3:44)

Spring is finally here. Kids are on the playground. Fair season is coming.

It has us thinking about teeter totters, Tilt-A-Whirls and work-life balance.

Are you riding a teeter totter through life?
At times, work is up. At other times, work is down and life is up.

You’re able to separate your personal and professional worlds.

You go to work. You do your job.

You go home. You enjoy time with family and friends. You engage in a hobby.

Work stays at work. Home stays at home. No blending of the two.

Up and down you go – day after day, week after week. It’s an enjoyable way to go through life.

tilt-a-whirl

Are you riding a Tilt-A-Whirl through life?
You rock back and forth between your personal and professional lives.

Occasionally, you may spin to the right. Round and round you go. You may even lean in to make it go faster.

You may go back to rocking back and forth slowly again. Then you may spin to the right again…or to the left.

Work may demand most of your time for a period of time. Then you ease back. At other times, you may focus on your personal world.

It’s quite a ride.

Of course, spin too much, too fast and you’ll get dizzy. You won’t be able to see clearly. Even worse, you may get sick.

But if you keep it under control, the Tilt-A-Whirl can be a fun ride.

Work-life balance versus life flow
Work-life balance, as represented by the teeter totter, has been the accepted goal for decades. It still works for many people.

If you’re one of them, more power to you.

But today, we’re connected 24/7 with our smartphones and tablets. The traditional view of work-life balance is increasingly elusive.

Many people are finding that life flow is a better concept now.

We count ourselves among them. So we’ve abandoned the teeter totter for the Tilt-A-Whirl.

This means flowing seamlessly between your personal and professional worlds.

The problem is many people feel guilty about working when they’re supposed to be playing or vice versa. So the starting point is:

Give yourself permission to flow back and forth.

That’s life on your own terms! That’s BIGG success.

Which ride suits you better – the teeter totter or the Tilt-A-Whirl?

5 tips for couples in business_BIGG Success

5 Tips for Couples in Business to Mix Business with Pleasure

5 tips for couples in business_BIGG Success

Happy Valentine’s Day!

The two of us are spending the whole day together, just like we do everyday – because we’re one of a growing number of couples in business.

If you’re one of us, you’ll probably relate to this – the first thing most people ask is:

“How do you do that?”

And then they add:

“My spouse and I could never do that.”

BIGG success is life on your own terms. We’ve always loved spending as much time together as possible. Being a couple in business lets us max it out.

We get so excited when we meet other couples in business. And we’ve been so fortunate to meet some dynamic duos.

Like Danno Wolkoff and Laura Orkin. Their company, Envision Radio Networks, is the syndicator for our radio show, BIGG Success in a Minute.

We’d like to congratulate them for hitting a milestone this year – their business is ten years old. And we love how they’re celebrating it – they recently made a donation to Danno’s college radio station, WJPZ-FM in Syracuse. The facility is now called the Envision Radio Networks Broadcast Center.

It just goes to show you what couples in business can accomplish. So today, we thought we’d share five tips on how couples in business can mix business with pleasure.

These are mostly a reminder for ourselves. We hope they resonate with you too.

Be whole(istic)

We spelled it wrong for a reason. We want to emphasize to keep your WHOLE life in mind with everything you do.

Your personal and professional worlds are more interdependent than they are for most people. That’s a good thing…as long as you consciously factor it in as you make plans and decisions.

You also need to keep your whole person in mind. It’s easy to lose yourself when you’re just half of a team.

This doesn’t need to be the case. In fact, quite the opposite.

You should build each other up for your mutual benefit. Couples in business can do this better than any other partners could.

Live with purpose on purpose

It’s easy to just jump right in with both feet. It’s easy to just focus on what’s urgent. It’s easy to get stuck in the day-to-day.

But couples in business need to live intentionally.

Know your underlying purpose. What’s your WHY?

It should drive every decision – business and personal. Because you will feel the effects more than most people, given your choice to live and work together.

So live with purpose, on purpose.

Bump heads regularly

We hasten to say that we’re not being literal here.

And no head butting, just head bumping!

By that we mean, check in with each other frequently. We tend to do this over the course of the day by taking quick breaks together.

In just a few minutes, we can catch each other up. We can also help each other with any challenges that have arisen.

It’s also so important to take time out to discuss the BIGG picture. We haven’t always been as good at this as we should. We talk a lot about the day-to-day. We know what we’re trying to accomplish. But we have to force ourselves to slow down and review our plans and progress.

There’s one more piece to bumping heads. You both need to be able to speak freely AND disagree. Disagreement is so important. And boy, do we have our disagreements. They’re good for both our business and our relationship.

If you both agree all the time, you’re probably missing opportunities at best or taking risks you shouldn’t at worst. So you have to lovingly disagree.

Shut up and down

Know when to say when. Then shut up. Stop talking about the business.

Schedule time to shut down. Then stop working.

We struggle with this. We both love our work.

But we need couple time. So we try to set times and/or days when business is in the background.

We often go for a drive in the country and walk along a river. We also love mysteries.

For example, we have The Thin Man series DVRed right now. Now you know what we’re doing for Valentine’s Day!

Like a lot of entrepreneurs, we’re not good at following rules. So if one of us gets an epiphany while we’re in down mode, we may mention it. We may write it down.

But it’s important to not let it overtake your time together, no matter how BIGG the idea may be.

Bring outsiders in

We can’t emphasize this one enough – get a coach. We find our coaches invaluable.

If you can’t afford to do that at this point, find other couples in business to network with.

A great way to do that is something we’re going to announce in just days. The best way to find out about it is to sign up for our newsletter.

So what’s the secret to a lasting relationship? A growing number of couples in business are finding it pays personally and professionally to mix business with pleasure. It leads to BIGG success!

Are you part of the growing number of couples in business?
