Hey – want to go out for lunch today?

Sure. Where do you want to go?

I don’t know…where do you want to go?

I asked you first!

Um…well let’s see – we could…

And the conversation continues.

How long does it take to make a decision?

Too long, in many cases. After all, this isn’t a BIGG decision. But we’re not through yet…

What are you going to have?

I’m thinking about the special, but I should get the salad.

I know – the special sounds so good. But the last time I was here, I had their signature sandwich and it was fantastic!

Oh, I hadn’t noticed that.

Here comes our server. Do you know what you want?

No – let’s tell ‘em we need more time.

Why does it take so long to make a simple decision – like what you want for lunch?

It’s the perfect example for a challenge we see many people facing today.

Brain static
“I have too much static in my brain.” That’s how one entrepreneur described it to us.

It’s a common theme – we hear it over and as we talk with people who are considering a career change, starting a business or trying to grow an existing business.

Brain overload

Our brains are overloaded. We’re overwhelmed with options.

Which one should we choose?

We’re afraid of making the wrong decision. We’re afraid to choose because another choice might have been better.

The great unknown

And especially when it comes to changing careers, starting a business, picking a strategy to grow a business and other major decisions, we’re afraid of the great unknown.

We can’t see what might lie ahead. And things change so fast these days.

Sure, you can set goals. But how do you hit a moving target?

Change creates uncertainty. Making decisions in the face of uncertainty is scary.

The result? Buffering Brain

The result of all of these choices, complexity, changes, and uncertainty?

Many people freeze up. They don’t make decisions; they defer them.

They end up in this infinite loop – kind of like the little wheel you see when a video is buffering. And it never loads – it just keeps spinning and spinning and spinning.

They’re suffering from one of the worst ailments we face today…

Buffering Brain Syndrome!

We’ve been there. We felt this way when we moved from separate careers in the bricks-and-mortar world to BIGG Success. We felt this in our early days as we weighed our options to offer products, programs and services.

Fortunately, we developed a process which we’ve been able to use on more recent decisions – like turning our podcast, The BIGG Success Show, into a syndicated radio show, BIGG Success in a Minute and starting The BIGG Success Enteprenurturing™ Center.

How did we do it? What’s the cure for Buffering Brain Syndrome? How can you decide what to do next?

We answer that question in a FREE special report we just created. It’s called DECIDE! 5 Keys to Know What to Do Next. In it…

  • We discuss five things you’ve been told true which hold you back today.

Find Your Passion with the Can’t Fail Option

The No Fail Option | BIGG SuccessHere’s a question to ask yourself: If you absolutely, positively knew you would not fail, what would you do?

Would you do what you’re doing now? If so, you can quit reading. But check in next time – we’ll have something just for you, assuming you want to take it to the next level.

Now back to those of you who would do something different. What’s holding you back?

In most cases, it’s fear. Pure and simple. And rightly so. As our friend Jim Bouchard says, “The absence of fear is stupidity!”

How do you overcome it? Here are two suggestions:

Do your due diligence

Passion is great. However, if it’s not combined with evidence, you may find yourself passionately unhappy. Prove out your idea. Remember, where there’s growth, there’s opportunity. Whether you’re thinking of starting a business or changing careers, is the industry growing?

A great resource for this is the Occupational Outlook Handbook from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Services. It’s available online and it’s free.

Mitigate the risk

BIGG success is about entrepreneuring your life. Contrary to popular lore, entrepreneurs are NOT risk lovers. However, successful entrepreneurs are excellent risk managers.

They mitigate risk by managing it, sharing it and by seeing it differently.

  • Risk management

Can you manage the risk by saving extra now and storing it away?

  • Risk sharing

If you’re thinking of launching a business, could you share the risk with a partner?

  • Risk perception

Is there something you know that most people don’t? Because of your unique knowledge and experiences, you may be able to look at a situation differently than most people.

As you keep finding ways to mitigate the risk, you’ll reach a point where what you’re contemplating doesn’t seem so risky. You realize you can’t fail. You’re ready for BIGG success!

If you’re contemplating a career change and still have questions, maybe we can help. Check out our coaching programs.

What's Hot in 2009: Careers

maple_leaf_foods_logo This week on The Bigg Success Show, we’re taking a look at opportunities and threats in 2009. We begin the five-part series today by looking at careers.

We recently posted an article on hot careers for 2009. On today’s show, we want to share some more thoughts. It’s a tough market if you’re looking for a job or changing careers right now. However, rest assured, there will be opportunities in 2009.

___

___

Opportunities in 2009

In the near future, we think the best opportunities will be “pockets”. As we define this term, “pockets” are niches within a larger job category. To find the pockets of opportunity in 2009, think about what’s been in the news and what opportunities in your area of expertise may benefit from that news.

For example, while foreclosures and bankruptcies are wreaking havoc on many, they are also creating opportunities for others. The finance profession has probably been hit as hard, or harder, than most fields.

However, opportunity still exists for certain specialists. A friend of ours is employed by a major bank’s workout department. In the last month-and-a-half, they’ve gone from our friend and one other employee to a department with about forty employees.

Some of these opportunities may be really hot in the next year or two. Then it will be time to move to a different specialty.

Opportunities in 2009 and beyond

For the long-term, think trends. In the article we mentioned previously, we looked at careers that the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects to be in high demand for the next eight years or so. Then we refined it by looking at expectations for 2009, industry by industry.

If a downturn was expected in an industry, we excluded careers in that field from the list. For example, it’s expected that the casino industry will be hiring people at an above-average rate in the coming years. However, the industry isn’t expected to do well in 2009 so we removed jobs in that sector.

One trend we’re all familiar with is the aging of the baby boomers. As they reach retirement age, many career fields are expanding to serve them. One is the health-care arena where demand for workers isn’t expected to be saturated for some time to come.

Another field that plays into this trend is financial services. Especially in light of what we experienced in 2008, people are being more diligent with their investments. In particular, the baby boomers are looking for professionals who can advise them on crucial financial decisions.

These are just a couple of examples that play off this one trend. The full article has over fifty occupations with a bright outlook in 2009 and beyond.

Even if you’re not currently in the market for a job, you might find it valuable to take a look at this information. You may just discover your bigg opportunity.
