As we talk with startup entrepreneurs and business owners, we hear a common theme:

They’re so overwhelmed they don’t know what to do!

Not so much with workload – although that’s often the case as well – but with brain overload.

They have too many ideas. They have too many options. They don’t know where to start.

So what do you do if you don’t know what to do?

Ask the Navy!

The Navy Flight Manual tells pilots to do five things when they’re lost. Let’s look at them from an entrepreneur’s point-of-view.

Confess
The first thing you should do when you don’t know what to do is confess. Admit to yourself that you are lost.

And don’t feel bad about it. Trust us, you’re not alone. Most of us have been in a place when we didn’t know what to do.

Climb
The next thing you should do if you don’t know what to do is climb. You have to get altitude.

Don’t stay mired in the details. Rise above them so you can see the BIGG picture.

Remember what you’re trying to accomplish. Review your BIGG goals.

Conserve
The third thing to do when you don’t know what to do is conserve. Sometimes you have to slow down to catch up!

Save your fuel, your energy until you can get a sense of direction. Speed without direction leads to nowhere fast!

Communicate
The fourth thing you should do when you don’t know what to do is communicate. Don’t try to go it alone.

That mush in your head will remain soft and gooey until you get it out. So talk to other people.

But not just any people – people who are like you, BIGG goal-getters. Too many people make the mistake of talking with family and friends.

Yes, they love you. Yes, they want the best for you.

But they’re not you!

They can’t fully understand what you’re going through. So talk with people who’ve been there, done that.

That’s exactly why we created the BIGG Success Entreprenurturing™ Center:

  • to give you the support you need when you need it
  • to give you answers to your most pressing questions
  • to give you access to people who’ve walked a thousand miles in your shoes.

You can join for free in seconds. Just enter your name and e-mail in the sign up box near the upper right corner of this page.

Comply
The final thing you should do if you don’t know what to do is comply.

Take what you’ve learned from communicating. Compare it to your vision and your values.

Your vision sets the direction to your destination. Your values are your compass – they keep you from straying off your flight path.

Now it’s up to you to decide.

Determine where to focus to help you reach your destination fastest. That’s life on your own terms! That’s BIGG success!

What do you do when you don’t know what to do?

John Boyd is “the fighter pilot who changed the art of war.” The two of us know him best for developing OODA loops. It’s is the planning model for today’s entrepreneur in our opinion.

He became a colonel in the Air Force, an instructor, and a man who abhorred incompetence. He often got into arguments with his superiors.

He would have been kicked out of the military except for one thing – he was usually on the right side of the argument.

So in case you’re not familiar with it, we want to share with you his “fork in the road” speech.

It’s one of the single most practical pieces of advice we’ve ever seen or heard.

The fork in the road speech
He would tell his charges: “A day will come when you will face a fork in the road. You will have to make a decision about which way you go.”

Pointing to the left, he continued, “If you go that way, you can be somebody. You will have to make compromises and you will have to turn your back on your friends. But you will be a member of the club, and you will get promoted, and you will get good assignments.”

Putting his left arm down and pointing to the right, he said, “Or you can go that way and you can do something – something for your country and for your Air Force and for yourself.”

He continued, “If you decide you want to do something, you may not get promoted and you may not get good assignments, and you certainly will not be the favorite of your superiors. But you won’t have to compromise yourself. You will be true to your friends and to yourself. And your work will make a difference. To be somebody or to do something. In life there is often a roll call. That’s when you will have to make a decision. To be or to do? Which way will you go?”

Boyd’s right. We all face this choice.

To be
In the pursuit of fame and fortune, many people walk all over anyone and everyone. They will do anything and everything they have to do for glory.

They will behave unethically. They will act selfishly. They may even succeed. They may have money and mansions. They may have fans who adore them.

But status gained in this manner often leads to a certain feeling of emptiness inside. These people often end up divorced, with bad children, and go to jail.

To do
But instead of trying to be somebody, you may find your BIGG opportunity in an organization which shares your values. As a corporate entrepreneur, you can make a difference from the inside out.

Or you may create your own gig. More and more people are doing it – finding ways to make a life, not just a living.

You can become a difference-maker. You can serve your fellow human beings. You can lift them up instead of tearing them down.

When you do this, they will lift you up to BIGG success!

To be or to do – which one do you choose?

The Single Biggest Reason People Fail to Reach Success

what road construction has to do with BIGG SuccessWe were traveling down a busy road in our area recently. It’s a two-way road with two lanes going in each direction.

A sign indicated there was “Road Work Ahead” – one lane on each side was shut down for about a mile. There was a worker with a “Slow” sign at the point where the lanes merged. There was another worker at the other end with the same sign, directing traffic in the opposite direction.

So here we were – driving through the construction zone. Suddenly the person in front of us stopped.

But why? We didn’t understand. However, we quickly discovered the reason.

He was looking at the worker holding the sign for traffic going the other way. On the back of the “Slow” sign was the word “Stop”.

So he stopped – even though the sign was not meant for him. The worker in frustration quickly waved him on.

Don’t hurry to stop

Unfortunately, most people don’t get waved on so quickly and readily in life. So they just stop and they stay stopped.

It’s the single biggest reason people do not reach success – they are in a hurry to stop.

They stop when they’re not supposed to. They haven’t reached their destination, but they still stop.

They stop because they see a sign – even when the sign isn’t meant for them.

They listen to other people who tell them to stop. They just don’t realize the advice isn’t for them or that the people they’re listening to don’t know what they’re talking about.

They stop because they think they’re being safe. In reality, they’re putting themselves and others at risk.

They stop because they run into obstacles. The problem is many of these blocks are self-created.

They hurry to stop.

Hurry to go!

BIGG goal-getters do the opposite. They hurry to go.

Things didn’t go as planned? Learn, adapt and go!

Someone said something discouraging or disparaging? Use it as fuel and go!

Go! To understand your environment better.

Go! To push past the obstacles.

Go! To prove people wrong.

Go! To reach BIGG success!

Give Up Your Beliefs to Be a Success

give way to your beliefs | BIGG SuccessDo you have to give up your beliefs to be a BIGG success?

Yes and no. Let’s tackle the “no” first.

Core beliefs

On a recent post, we asked: Must you sell your soul to be a BIGG success?

Some beliefs are sacrosanct. These core beliefs are part of a dynamic duo.

You need a vision. It is the star toward which you press.

Your core beliefs are your compass. They help you see the boundaries over which you must not cross.

If you do, any success you achieve will have little meaning. You will have lost yourself in your quest for success.

Discovering yourself is BIGG success.

Mistaken beliefs

But beliefs can work against you. These are beliefs you must give up to be a BIGG success.

We’ve all heard it said over and over: Perception is reality.

No it’s not.

The world is not flat. Yet many people said it was. It kept mankind from exploring new worlds for century upon century.

Perception may be reality. Or it may not.

Stated directly, your perception may be wrong. If you want to be a BIGG success, you must always guard against misperception.

You must discover the objective reality.

You will only make the right choices when you aren’t mislead.

You can only make the best decisions when you aren’t misguided.

Yes, your beliefs can work against you. Give up mistaken beliefs to be a BIGG success.

Limiting beliefs

These are really a special form of mistaken beliefs. But they are so pervasive that we felt they deserved a special mention.

Robert Anthony said, “You can have anything you want if you are willing to give up the belief that you can’t have it.”

Well said.

Do you believe that you can’t get a promotion? You’re right.

Do you believe that you can’t succeed in business? You’re right.

Do you believe you are a loser? You’re right.

Do you believe you’re a winner? You’re right.

Tell your mind what you want it to think. Internalize those thoughts into beliefs. And your mind will begin to find ways to prove you right.

Even if you’re wrong!

Even if you told yourself you couldn’t do it when you could have!

You can achieve everything in your wildest dreams. But you won’t if you believe you can’t. Your mind will work to keep you stuck right where you are.

It’s your choice.

Choose disappointment, defeat and despair.

Choose to lose.

Choose a life of hardship and pain.

Or…

Choose enthusiasm, energy and elation.

Choose to win.

Choose BIGG success!

Do Nothing to Be a Success Faster

nothing done on the to do list | BIGG SuccessYes, you’re reading it right. Sometimes it pays to do nothing.

Let’s look at two situations where this may be the case.

Hold

As Kenny Rogers sang in The Gambler, “you gotta know when to hold ’em.”

We’ve witnessed extreme volatility in the stock market. But in spite of that, we’ve held tight.

Research still shows that most people who pull their money out and then put it back in tend to buy high and sell low. It’s the exact opposite of what you want to do.

The same may be true for your business. Right now is probably not the best time to sell. The value of small businesses tend to follow the stock market.

So you might want to hold for now until market prices recover and credit is more generally available. In the meantime, keep making money and improving the business.

Of course, you should always consult with your professional advisors about the specifics of your situation.

Wait

In a go-go-go, gotta-have-it-now world, this may seem like strange advice. But sometimes it pays to wait.

For example, it may pay to wait to start a business. You may have a good idea but the market isn’t there right now.

Or you may want to wait until you gain some relevant experience. Or because you’re almost vested in your company’s retirement plan.

Most things in life aren’t now or never. Wait is a viable option.

Sometimes doing nothing helps you reach BIGG success faster!
