Psychological research has identified sixteen basic desires underlying our behavior. See the list to determine what motivates you.

We discussed sixteen motivations for happiness on The BIGG Success Show. Here’s a summary of that discussion.

This show was inspired by the book, Who Am I? The 16 Basic Desires That Motivate Our Actions and Define Our Personalities*. It’s written by the late great Dr. Steven Reiss.

He found that happiness and life-satisfaction come from a sense that our lives have meaning and fulfill a larger purpose. He calls this “value-based happiness.” He has identified 16 universal desires that drive all meaningful behavior.

The Simple Secret for a Successful Career

As complex as people may like to make it, there’s a simple secret for a successful career. It can be boiled down to one sentence.

Do your best doing what
you do best.

Let’s chat about the two parts of this simple phrase, which fully explains how to have a successful career.

Do your best

You can do your best no matter what:

  • Whether you currently have your dream gig or even if you don’t
  • Whether you’re at the top of the organization or at the bottom
  • Whether you’re having a good day or a bad one

In fact, BIGG success demands that you do your best every day. Ultimately, BIGG success is the feeling of fulfillment you get from striving to realize your full potential.

Doing your best is a high standard. But it’s part of the price you’ll willingly pay to become a BIGG success.

You can start where you are. You can start today. You can do your best.

Doing what you do best

Now we come to the exponential power in this simple sentence. It’s important to do your best. But it’s not enough.

In order to be a BIGG success in your career, you need to do what you do best. Here’s the good news:

Doing your best is much easier when you’re doing what you do best.

  • You’ll be more enthusiastic
  • You’ll have more energy
  • You’ll feel at one with yourself and the world

So how do you discover what you do best? Ask yourself:

  • What do you excel at?
  • What comes easily for you that others find difficult?
  • What’s in your DNA?

These are a few of the questions you can answer to determine what you do best. But don’t just be introspective.

  • Ask your friends
  • Ask your family
  • Ask your colleagues
  • Ask your boss
  • Ask your mentors
  • Ask anyone and everyone who may be able to offer you needed insight

Once you figure it out, take action! Look for opportunities to do what you do best. And do your best doing it. It leads to BIGG success.

Why Entrepreneurs Should Not Be Too Happy

happy entrepreneur

We spend a significant amount trying to understand psychology. We particularly like the positive psychology movement.

There’s a lot of emphasis placed on happiness. We don’t think happiness is enough. At the same time, happiness may be too much.

It’s the reason why entrepreneurs should not be too happy. Research has shown that:

People who rate their happiness at the top of a 10-point scale make significantly less money than people who place their level of happiness at 8 or 9.

While this study focused on income, our guess is that it would hold true for other measurements of success as well. So if you want to be successful:

Be happy but not content.

Driven by this lack of contentment, entrepreneurs want more. They go beyond happiness to seek fulfillment.

Is there a difference? We believe so. However, a lot of people disagree with us; they think happiness and contentment and fulfillment are the same thing.

What do you think?

The High Cost of Instant Success

high costBy now, we all know Ted Williams – the homeless man with the golden voice. His video went viral in hours.

The media jumped all over him. Within days, he was on The Today Show. Within a week, he had appeared on The Early Show, Jimmy Fallon, Dr. Phil and Entertainment Tonight. He had job offers from MSNBC, the Cleveland Cavaliers and Kraft. It was even reported that Jack Nicholson had personally called offering a role in an upcoming movie.

___

___

Unfortunately, personal issues rose to the surface just as quickly. Ted’s star burned bright. But it fell as quickly as it came to light.

We hope we see him in the spotlight again – when he’s ready for it.

Fame and fortune should be by-products
Many people believe that fame and fortune are the answer. They aren’t. They may be a by-product of BIGG success. However, they won’t – in and of themselves – lead to fulfillment.

They aren’t the end, either. In fact, many studies have shown they’re barely the means for achieving happiness. Fame and fortune are goals that are empty.

What would you do with your fame and fortune? When you know the answer to that question, you’re a step closer to being ready for it.

Natural talent is a small part of the equation
Ted definitely has a talent. He was discovered with a sign that said, “I have a God-given gift of voice.”

But he was only partially right. He received training years ago. It takes hard work. It takes time. It takes hard work over time to become proficient.

But it takes more than that. Ted says drugs and alcohol ruined his career, his life. He’s not alone. Drugs and alcohol keep many people from reaching BIGG success.

Have you discovered your gift? Are you investing time to master it?

BIGG success comes for a price
BIGG success is life on your own terms. There’s a principle of negotiation – you get to set the price or the terms, but not both. That is, unless you’re negotiating with a fool. And BIGG success is no fool!

If you set the terms for your life, BIGG success sets the price. You have to be prepared to pay it or you’ll never reach BIGG success.

As a society, we seem to have bought into the fallacy of instant success. Kids dream of being stars. Adults play the lottery while dreaming of how they would spend the money. Yet most people who win the lottery end up in worse financial shape within years.

We think shows like American Idol demonstrate instant success. But they don’t – do you ever see a contestant who gets deep into the competition without years of training?

The internet does occasionally produce instant stars – like it did with Ted. Unfortunately, as has been demonstrated in this case, BIGG success demands a price even if you are an instant success.

And the price is usually a lot higher when fame and fortune come quickly. So if you’re struggling to reach BIGG success, count yourself lucky!

Cinderella stories usually turn out much better in the movies than they do in real life. Prepare, prepare, prepare … so you’re ready for BIGG success!

Just a note: If your heart goes out to people like Ted, check out Invisible People. Mark Horvath is doing some BIGG things bringing light to the plight of our nation’s homeless people.

Strapped for Cash?

money-in-handA recent trend report from TrendWatching highlighted the increasing number of people who are supplementing their income with a part-time business. This report is full of resources that will help you find your opportunity for some spare cash.

___

___

It’s no wonder that so many people are jumping on this bandwagon. We’ve seen increases in our health insurance, our property taxes, and more. It sounds like there’s more to come.

The three-income family

Isn’t it interesting, though, that just a few generations ago, most families got by on one income? Then we added a second one in the household with more and more women joining the workforce.

___

marylynnI don’t think it was purely a financial decision. It was also about fulfillment for many women, but it certainly helped the family’s income.

___

Now a number of people can’t get by on two incomes. They need three or maybe more. If you find yourself in this position, it may be good to ask if all the obligations are really worth it.

Is that life on your own terms – being weighted down by the cost of things you thought you wanted? With careful analysis, you may realize they’re not so important – especially if you find you can’t enjoy life because you’re working so much.

So if you feeling that you need a third income, it might pay to look at your obligations to see if there are areas where you can cut. Spending time finding ways to reduce your obligations might get you further faster than spending that same time trying to make some extra money.

This new trend is about something more important than income.

Many of us now realize more than ever how much we want to be in charge of our own lives. The TrendWatching report mentions that people fantasize about being their own boss, even if it’s just for a few hours a week.

Bigg success is life on your own terms. You’re the entrepreneur of your life whether or not you’re an entrepreneur in the traditional sense.

Some people want to be the boss all the time. According to this new report, that trend is still alive and well. But more and more people are finding ways to be the boss at least part of the time.

They have the security of a full-time job along with the freedom that being in charge gives you part of the time. Freedom with security … what a great combination!

When you find fulfilling ways to make extra money in your spare time, you’re getting synergy working in the five elements of bigg success. If you make the right moves with that extra money, you can accelerate your journey to bigg success, to life on your own terms.

Turning $3 into a multi-billion dollar business

One way that people are making extra money is by selling their expertise. Another way is by selling, or renting, assets. One clever example of this is ParkingSpots.com, which helps people rent their extra off-street parking spaces.

___

georgeI heard Michael Krasny tell his story of the founding of what became CDW. Most of us have probably done business with them. They do a great job. Back in 1982, Michael had a used computer he wanted to sell. The Chicago Sun Times was running a special on classified ads – 3 lines for 3 days for $3. He ran an ad and his phone started ringing off the hook. He realized he had a business here. He was right – within about ten years, the business he started from that classified ad became a Fortune 500 company. Michael Krasny became a multi-billionaire, recognized on the Forbes 400 as one of the richest people in the world! Now that’s bigg success!
