It’s graduation season and every year there are great commencement speeches. We’ve talked about this before on the show including speeches from Tom Hanks to Steve Jobs to name a few.
Today we’ll share another inspiring story told at a recent graduation.
Former Nebraska football coach, athletic director and Congressperson, Tom Osborne, gave the keynote address for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s 2021 graduating class.

We’re doing ten posts on lifelong learning. It’s hard to believe but we’re already at the ninth podcast in the series. In this episode, we want to discuss leadership, and while we always talk about the importance of personal leadership here, today we’re going to focus on leading others.
There seems to be a common ailment affecting many leaders today. This ailment isn’t specific to industry. It has affected leaders in both the private and public sectors.
The problem with many leaders today is that they don’t lead. They follow. They respond. They react.
Public sector leaders
Our politicians look at the polls to decide on their positions. Of course, they need to be responsive to the people.
But we need leaders with BIGG visions. Their vision shouldn’t sway with the winds of public opinion.
It may not be popular at a given moment in time. Leaders don’t care.
They do care about importance. Great leaders help their people understand why achieving the vision is essential.
But as we said earlier, this ailment hasn’t just affected leaders in the public sector.
Private sector leaders
We’re told that marketing is everything. Business schools train future leaders to listen to their customers.
It’s now conventional wisdom. And, of course, it’s important. But it’s not enough.
We need leaders who know when to lead. As Henry Ford said, “If I would have asked my customers what they wanted, they would have said a faster horse.”
We need entrepreneurial leaders. We need leaders who see things that customers don’t.
We need inspirational leaders who bring innovative solutions to the market. We need leaders who bring customers products and services they never realized – and never would realize – that they needed.
We need entrepreneurial leaders – in the private sector and the public sector. The key to prosperity is leaders who have been cured of this ailment. It will lead to BIGG success.
Great leaders are vital to success for any organization. It’s especially true today as we face more challenges with a multi-generational workforce. We’re also learning more about how people respond to calls for change.
It’s incumbent on leadership today to focus the attention and activities around these three questions: #1 – What are the most important results for us to achieve? Your people must know what needs to be done. Not the duties, but the outcome. What is the expected result of the work you’re doing together? Identify it, proclaim it, and repeat it … and repeat it … and repeat it. #2 – What behaviors are necessary to achieve those results? Identify what it will take to achieve your desired result. Don’t worry about current behavior. Focus on what behavior will lead to bigg success. To accomplishing what you set out to do.
#3 – What is working well? Along the way, highlight those things that are leading you and your team to your goal. Keep your discussions on discovering these things and then making them part of your system.

The single most important leadership skill is the ability to determine what’s most important. Managers focus on doing things right; they are into efficiency. Great leaders focus on doing the right things; they concern themselves with effectiveness.
Because of all the demands on them, mothers learn to prioritize. They quickly separate what’s most important from what’s not important. Then they put all of their energy into what they have determined is essential.
They constantly process new information and responding accordingly. Along the way, they realize that priorities may change. So they adjust – tending to a sick child is more important than cleaning house, demands at work may take precedence over a home-made dinner.
They realize that sometimes some things have to give. So carry-out will allow the family to still be together at dinner without requiring preparation time. That special dinner she was going to make can wait until tomorrow. Being together matters; what’s for dinner tonight doesn’t.
So mothers, like great leaders, set priorities knowing full well they’re priorities will change as they receive new information. When that happens, they’re ready to adjust as necessary to keep working on what’s most important.
By constantly focusing on what’s most pressing and spending all their valuable time working on just those things, moms provide an essential lesson for anyone wanting to be a great leader.
