Take It to the Next Level in Your Career

the next level in your career | BIGG SuccessWhat would you do if you positively knew you would not fail?

Our last post was directed to people who would choose a career change. In this post, we’ll focus on people who would not change careers.

As a BIGG goal-getter, you may be satisfied with your work but you want to take it to the next level.

Let’s “reverse entrepreneur” this process. Ask yourself: Why aren’t you at the next level already?

It may be that you don’t want it badly enough. It may be that you’re not willing to pay the price to reach it. But for BIGG goal-getters, it generally comes down to one of three things:

What you know

You may feel like you need some education. It may be formal education or, more likely, it is some sort of certification or continuing education within your industry. What’s holding you back? Go and get it. Remember the hardest part is getting started.

Who you know

You may not know a “critical somebody” who can help you get to the next level. Here’s the good news: chances are someone you already know can connect you with them. Just let the people in your network know who you want to meet. Don’t be afraid to ask them to help.

In many cases, there’s a mental block. You’re scared – scared to take a risk, scared of failing, scared of being embarrassed. Deep down, you may even be afraid of “outsucceeding” your friends. This is often the real source of the mental block.

Now here’s how you get to the next level:

Step 1 – Determine the source from the list above

Do an honest assessment. Talk to people close to you. Reach out to trusted advisors. Do some real soul-searching.

It may be a combination of the two or even all three of the above items. The key is to identify all the things that are holding you back. Then you’re ready for the next step.

Step 2 – Write down your goal

Get it out of your head. Write it down and post it in a place where you will see it every day. Read it out loud in the morning. Repeat this again right before you go to bed.

Find pictures that represent what reaching this goal will mean to you. Post these pictures where you will see them frequently. This step helps you make the intangible goal more tangible by making it visual. The repetition helps seal it in your brain.

Step 3 – Set milestones

Now that you have your BIGG goal, create the stepping stones. Write down the steps you will take to reach your goal. Be sure to include a due date for each step.

Pick out a reward for reaching each milestone. You may even make each reward progressively bigger as you get closer to your ultimate goal. Put up pictures of your reward with the due date so you keep it ever present in your mind.

You may also use a calendar. Put a number on each day to represent how long you have until the due date for your next milestone. Make an “x” as each day passes to help you keep your sense of urgency.

Step 4 – GO!

Nothing happens until you take action. So GO…BIGG success is waiting for you!

Overstepping Stones

steppingstones We’re sure you’ve heard of stepping stones. Today we want to talk about overstepping stones.

We’re proud residents of the State of Illinois. We’re dismayed, however, that our great state has been getting some bad press recently because of the actions of our Governor, Rod Blagojevich. While he hasn’t been convicted yet of any wrongdoing, it appears that he’s in deep trouble.

A state of dissatisfaction

It’s rumored that he felt he had reached a stalemate in his career. He wanted to make more money. He even had aspirations of running for President. But even before this scandal broke, his approval rating was incredibly low (the last number we heard was 4%). If you look at the state of our State, you can understand why.

He looked at every opportunity for a stepping stone, which culminated in what appears to be illegal activity. That got us thinking – we all need stepping stones to help us get to the next level of success.

Overstepping the bounds

But there’s a fine line between a stepping stone and what we’ll call an overstepping stone.

We abuse our stepping stones when we overstep our bounds. It appears our Governor did this on at least three levels:

Are You a Victim of Your Own Success?

stress You’ve made it! You’ve arrived! You’ve reached that next level of success! You’ve achieved your dream!

But you’re swamped. Now, you have a seemingly endless list of things-to-do. And it all just keeps coming. Minute after minute, day after day, week after week. It’s sheer chaos.

You find yourself busier than ever. You’re more successful than ever. But are you happier than ever?

It seems that you’re a victim of your own success – too much to do, too many clients, too many constituents. So what can you do about it?

Congratulate yourself

Take a deep breath and a little pause. Enjoy it for a bit!

Get away from it all for a day

We know … you’re too busy. But here’s the thing – you’re too busy not to get away because, on your day away, you’re going to contemplate. What’s most important? What’s least important?

After you’ve thought about those two things:

Hire an assistant, outsource, partner, joint venture … you get the idea

Delegate – in some way, shape or form – those things that aren’t most important.

You might be asking, “Can I afford to hire someone?” But you’re asking the wrong question. The question really is, “Can I afford not to?”

Because the most important things – the people who are most important for you to spend time with, the projects that only you can and should do – will get pushed aside by the less important things if you don’t take this step.

Set the expectations for the people in your life

You need to establish boundaries for all your people. You may set certain times when you’re available to employees, vendors, and even customers. We think customers can’t be trained, but even they can.

georgeIn one of my early businesses, my second biggest customer was constantly calling with demands for immediate service. Finally, I presented them with an option – they could work within our time frame for the price we negotiated or I could offer them quicker turnaround for a higher price. They chose the better price!

Finding your model

Now you’re only working on the most important things and you’ve communicated your boundaries to the most important people in your life. You’re ready to do those things you do in the most efficient way possible.

So let’s look for a model. Think about a manufacturer’s assembly line with products coming down it. What are your products?

marylynnFor us, it is shows to produce. Articles to write. E-mails to return. People to reach out to. Products to create. Services to deliver.

Your production cycle may flow over an hour, a day, a week, or a month. Think about all of the important things you do – that’s your product – and engineer your processes to move that product down the line in the most efficient manner possible.

Engineer your processes

What is the best way to do it? Think about it logically. Step back and look at it again. Walk yourself through the whole process, step-by-step as it exists today. Now, start looking for ways to save little bits of time.

georgeOne of the guest speakers for my class became a billionaire by turning his little business into a Fortune 500 company. One of his secrets was finding ways to get more done with the same people. For example, they discovered a way to change how they labeled packages for shipment. It saved them 55 seconds. That’s time they could spend on something else!

So if you find yourself a victim of your own success, start with effectiveness – make sure you’re doing the right things. Then work on efficiency – doing those things the right way.

Doing the right things the right way … before you know it, you’ll be an even bigger success without being victimized by it!
