He arrived toward the end of the winter. It was cold. The land seemed barren. And he was struck by this white substance that fell from the sky to create a blanket on the land.

Winter soon gave way to spring and the protégé basked in the warmth of the sun. He was struck by how the ground turned from brown to green. And suddenly, all the plants seemed to be encompassed by this strange green foliage.

As was his mission, he continued watching the humans, as he had come to learn they were called. He dictated detailed notes each day back to his home planet.

Spring gave way to summer and the heat. Oh, he almost couldn’t bare it.

And then fall came. He was awestruck at the changing colors and the leaves falling from the trees.

Then came winter. The white stuff fell. It was cold.

But soon, he felt the warmth of the humans’ hearts. It was the most wonderful time of the year, he heard them say.

And they were right – there was something special about this season.

His stay ended about a month later. He was beamed back to his home planet.

The alien elder asked, “What did you learn, my protégé?”

“I learned that these humans are strange creatures indeed. They really behave differently one time a year. They are friendlier. They are more compassionate. It’s how we always treat each other.”

“Why do you think that we are able to carry this spirit through the whole year and they are not?”

“Are we smarter?” the protégé asked.

“No, they are just as smart as we are.”

“Do we have bigger hearts?”

“No, we both have the same capacity to care.”

“Then I do not know, wise elder.”

“Our planet only has two rules. You know them. What is the first?”

“Love the Supreme Being with all your heart.”

“You are correct, young lad. This is important because it helps us realize there is something or someone greater than ourselves. We are reminded of our place in the universe. And the second rule?”

“Love everyone, including yourself.”

“Right again. Before you can truly love anyone, you must love yourself. The greater your capacity to love yourself, the greater your capacity to love others.

“It seems so simple. Shouldn’t there be more rules?”

“Ah, it is simple but it is not easy. You see, the earthlings are governed by the same two rules. But they like to make it complicated.”

Two rules. That’s all it takes to be a BIGG success!

Treating If-Only Syndrome

prescriptionWhat do you do when things don’t go your way? You may feel discouraged. The events of life may just sap your strength of spirit. You lose your mojo!

It’s hard to live your life on your own terms when you’re feeling down, but it’s only natural for us humans to have down days.

One cause of this is what we call If – Only Syndrome.

If only I had finished college.
If only I got a different degree.
If only I had taken that job.
If only I hadn’t quit that job.
If I had only done this instead of that, my life would be so different.
If only. If only. If only.

It’s easy to do. We start to beat ourselves up. We may even feel sorry for ourselves and mope a little.

As with many things, the right thing to do isn’t the easy thing to do.

Fighting these urges is hard.
Getting past the past is hard.
Lifting ourselves up is hard.
Fighting our natural urges is hard.

Focus matters

We get trapped on what might have been. What might have been doesn’t matter at all.

What does matter is what is and what can be.

You can be a bigg success. You can live your life on your own terms starting today.

georgeI struggled with this when I was younger. I dropped out of college. I went on to start three businesses. But every time things got a little rough, I would beat myself up for not getting a degree. I thought that if I just had that degree, I wouldn’t have these problems. But I was wrong!

The prescription for If – Only Syndrome comes in two parts. The first part of the cure is a healthy dose of …

So what?

marylynnTo continue with George’s example, say you didn’t get a college degree. So what? How many people have succeeded bigg without a college degree?

We don’t mean to diminish the importance of a good education. It does open up opportunities that may not be open otherwise. But it’s just one factor.

What about your experiences? They are irreplaceable.

Now along with a healthy dose of “So what”, drink a little …

What can be?

Sticking with the college degree example, why don’t you get one now if it’s that important to you?

georgeThat’s what I did; I went back to school. It’s not a path I would recommend. It was hard! I still had my three businesses, but I did go back and get a degree. It’s interesting … I then went on to get an advanced degree because I didn’t think I would ever go back to school again. Had I gone the traditional path, I doubt I would have ever gotten that advanced degree.

What can be for you?

How can you make it happen? How will you find the time? How will you pay for it?

When you begin to focus on the actions necessary to move to where you want to be, you’ll feel energized. You’ll feel hope instead of discouragement.

What do you do when you feel discouraged?

Gift It Forward

gifts_2 It’s the day after Christmas. Here in the United States, that means the customer service lines are long as people return their gifts. In other parts of the world – Australia, Britain, Canada, and New Zealand – it’s Boxing Day.

If you’re not familiar with it, you might suspect that there’s fist-a-cuffs over gift exchanges! But Boxing Day is a tradition of giving gifts to people who are less fortunate.

We don’t want to leave the impression that we think us Yanks are Scrooges. A lot of people here are very generous throughout the holiday season. But we think Boxing Day is an interesting tradition, truly in tune with the spirit of this time of the year.

Starting from Scratch – Part 1

We had a special guest today on The Bigg Success Show.

Adam Shepard is the author of Scratch Beginnings. After graduating from college, he conducted a real-life experiment, by starting out homeless with only $25 and the clothes on his back, to see if the American Dream is still alive. His book chronicles his year-long journey. Here’s a summary of the conversation …

marylynnI loved your book, Adam. There were times when I couldn’t put it down because I was worried about you! I can’t imagine what your mom and your dad must have felt.

They definitely did not sleep much on that first night … that’s for sure.

Touching Others by Adding Your Personal Touch

Sometimes we forget what an impact we can make in the lives of others with our jobs. No matter what that job may be.

Barbara Glanz wrote a wonderful book called CARE Packages for the Workplace – Dozens of Little Things You Can Do to Regenerate Spirit at Work. In this book, she tells the story of a person who attended one of her workshops about putting your own personal mark on your work.

The story is about Johnny, who is a bagger at a grocery store. Johnny took Barbara’s point to heart.

Here’s what Johnny did …

Johnny had an idea for putting his stamp on customer service. He would come up with a thought every day and put it in every customer’s grocery bag.

He went home that night and asked his dad to teach him how to use the computer. You see, Johnny has Down’s syndrome. His dad helped him develop a three column by three row page.

When he gets home from work each night, Johnny finds a thought for the next day. Sometimes he can’t find a good one, so he makes one up! With his dad’s help, he types it into the computer. They copy it into the other eight sections of the page. Then they print it out.

Johnny cuts up the nine thoughts and then personally signs the back of each one … which means that Johnny signs at least 1,800 thoughts each day.

Here’s what happened as a result …

The store manager noticed that Johnny’s thoughts were in huge demand. He first noticed it when he was walking through the store one day and there was a long line. He immediately called for more lanes to be open.

But the customers didn’t move – they wanted to be in Johnny’s lane so they got his thought for the day! One customer told the store manager that she used to only shop at his store once a week. Now she only comes to his store – because she wants Johnny’s thought for the day! Johnny’s thought has turned shopping into an experience for his customers.

Other employees also noticed what Johnny was doing. The people in the floral department started thinking about how they could put their mark on customer service. Now, when a flower breaks off or isn’t going to be used, they don’t just throw it away like they used to. They find an elderly woman or a young girl and personally pin it on her!

One of the meat packers loves Snoopy. He bought 50,000 Snoopy stickers, which he puts on every piece of meat he packs. Johnny’s thought has made work fun for his co-workers.

So Johnny shows us that every single one of us has the ability to make a significant difference in the world. No matter what our job is.

We applaud Johnny’s bigg success!

Our bigg quote today is by William James, who said,

“Act as if what you do makes a difference.  It does.”

Sometimes a simple thought, put into action, creates a chain reaction.

Next time, we’ll discuss how to establish credit for the first time. Until then, here’s to your bigg success!

In Tragedy, There can be Triumph!

Life Skills

Image of Viktor Frankl

Charles Dickens opened up A Tale of Two Cities with his famous line, “It was the best of times; it was the worst of times …”

We’re fortunate. Our times aren’t anything like the times Dickens described. However, it does highlight that it is possible to look at a given moment in time through two different lenses.

We keep hearing how bad things are right now. For some, they are. We can’t fully control what happens to us; we are completely in charge of how we respond.

We can choose to only see the bad or we can strive to find the good. For it’s often in the worst times that we learn the most. For that, we can be grateful.

Victor Frankl, author of the wonderful book Man’s Search for Meaning, endured the concentration camps of World War II. He came to realize that the guards could take away almost everything from him, but they could never take away his thoughts. That led to his discovery of a whole new field of social psychology.

By focusing his thoughts on things that were positive, he could escape the horrors he saw around him. By remembering things that inspired him in the past, he could be lifted up in spite of his miserable conditions.

It didn’t make his conditions any better. It did give him the spirit to press on rather than give up. And because of it, he made a discovery that has changed the lives of countless people.

In tragedy, there can be triumph!
