5 Tips for Couples in Business to Mix Business with Pleasure

5 tips for couples in business_BIGG Success

Happy Valentine’s Day!

The two of us are spending the whole day together, just like we do everyday – because we’re one of a growing number of couples in business.

If you’re one of us, you’ll probably relate to this – the first thing most people ask is:

“How do you do that?”

And then they add:

“My spouse and I could never do that.”

BIGG success is life on your own terms. We’ve always loved spending as much time together as possible. Being a couple in business lets us max it out.

We get so excited when we meet other couples in business. And we’ve been so fortunate to meet some dynamic duos.

Like Danno Wolkoff and Laura Orkin. Their company, Envision Radio Networks, is the syndicator for our radio show, BIGG Success in a Minute.

We’d like to congratulate them for hitting a milestone this year – their business is ten years old. And we love how they’re celebrating it – they recently made a donation to Danno’s college radio station, WJPZ-FM in Syracuse. The facility is now called the Envision Radio Networks Broadcast Center.

It just goes to show you what couples in business can accomplish. So today, we thought we’d share five tips on how couples in business can mix business with pleasure.

These are mostly a reminder for ourselves. We hope they resonate with you too.

Be whole(istic)

We spelled it wrong for a reason. We want to emphasize to keep your WHOLE life in mind with everything you do.

Your personal and professional worlds are more interdependent than they are for most people. That’s a good thing…as long as you consciously factor it in as you make plans and decisions.

You also need to keep your whole person in mind. It’s easy to lose yourself when you’re just half of a team.

This doesn’t need to be the case. In fact, quite the opposite.

You should build each other up for your mutual benefit. Couples in business can do this better than any other partners could.

Live with purpose on purpose

It’s easy to just jump right in with both feet. It’s easy to just focus on what’s urgent. It’s easy to get stuck in the day-to-day.

But couples in business need to live intentionally.

Know your underlying purpose. What’s your WHY?

It should drive every decision – business and personal. Because you will feel the effects more than most people, given your choice to live and work together.

So live with purpose, on purpose.

Bump heads regularly

We hasten to say that we’re not being literal here.

And no head butting, just head bumping!

By that we mean, check in with each other frequently. We tend to do this over the course of the day by taking quick breaks together.

In just a few minutes, we can catch each other up. We can also help each other with any challenges that have arisen.

It’s also so important to take time out to discuss the BIGG picture. We haven’t always been as good at this as we should. We talk a lot about the day-to-day. We know what we’re trying to accomplish. But we have to force ourselves to slow down and review our plans and progress.

There’s one more piece to bumping heads. You both need to be able to speak freely AND disagree. Disagreement is so important. And boy, do we have our disagreements. They’re good for both our business and our relationship.

If you both agree all the time, you’re probably missing opportunities at best or taking risks you shouldn’t at worst. So you have to lovingly disagree.

Shut up and down

Know when to say when. Then shut up. Stop talking about the business.

Schedule time to shut down. Then stop working.

We struggle with this. We both love our work.

But we need couple time. So we try to set times and/or days when business is in the background.

We often go for a drive in the country and walk along a river. We also love mysteries.

For example, we have The Thin Man series DVRed right now. Now you know what we’re doing for Valentine’s Day!

Like a lot of entrepreneurs, we’re not good at following rules. So if one of us gets an epiphany while we’re in down mode, we may mention it. We may write it down.

But it’s important to not let it overtake your time together, no matter how BIGG the idea may be.

Bring outsiders in

We can’t emphasize this one enough – get a coach. We find our coaches invaluable.

If you can’t afford to do that at this point, find other couples in business to network with.

A great way to do that is something we’re going to announce in just days. The best way to find out about it is to sign up for our newsletter.

So what’s the secret to a lasting relationship? A growing number of couples in business are finding it pays personally and professionally to mix business with pleasure. It leads to BIGG success!

Are you part of the growing number of couples in business?

Love is a Full Contact Sport

Love Like A Black Belt Book Cover | BIGG SuccessIf you’re a long-time reader, you know that we’re partners in life and in business. And we still love each other!

This arrangement doesn’t work for everyone, but it does work for us. And that’s what matters!

One of our weaknesses is that, because we are so passionate about what we do, we often put the business first.

You may not relate to that. But how about this one: Some couples struggle for “together time” because they put their kids first.

If we don’t take time to nurture our relationships, the strong foundation will crack and everything will crumble.

Take Me Out to the Free Ball Game

george_marylynn_baseball.jpbA one. A two. A three. Take me out to the ball game …

We can hear Harry Carey singing it right now! (We’ll warn you: If you listen to our show today, you can hear why we could never be on American Idol!)

Bigg success is life on your own terms. There are five elements of bigg success – money, time, growth, work and play. Today we’ll focus on play.

If you’re a regular reader, you know we’ve confessed that play is the thing we struggle with the most. We love our work. We’ve found that thinking about the five elements of bigg success helpful because we make sure we schedule some play time.

We love baseball, but going to a Major League Baseball game can be a real budget-bender. By the time you buy the tickets, pay for parking, and grab a hot dog, you can spend some serious smack!

You don’t have to throw your budget a curve ball to have fun at the old ball game

We feel fortunate to live in a University town. We have some bigg time sporting events, including a baseball team that is doing very well this year. Go Illini!

Last year, we kept talking about going to a game but never made it. They start early when it’s too cold for us to watch a game outside.

This year we made a commitment to go, so we were keeping an eye on their schedule. Lo and behold, they ran a bigg promotion – you could get into the game for free (it normally costs $5) and you could even get free food.

Now that’s a bigg deal!

And the promotion was a bigg success! They had a record attendance. In fact, so many people showed up, we decided it was worth buying food from the concession stand instead of waiting for the free stuff.

It was a great game. We had lots of fun and some good time together as a couple (see pictures on our Flickr page). That’s the best part. The second best part was that Illinois came back to win in the ninth inning!

But what if you don’t have a University team in your area? Can you still take in a ball game on the cheap? Baseball, you bet!

Summer college baseball leagues. College baseball players finish their collegiate schedules early. They want to keep playing without jeopardizing their amateur status. So college leagues have sprung up. We have a team about thirty miles from us (ticket prices are $6 – $9). Check the National Alliance of College Summer Baseball site for the team closest to you.

Minor leagues. Future professional baseball players have to train somewhere. There are minor league teams all over the country. We have a AAA team fairly close to us ($6 – $10 for a ticket). If you don’t know of one in your area, check out the Minor League Baseball site.

Amateur leagues. We have several teams in our area like this. You can take in a game for a few bucks plus any food and drinks you may want.

Little Leagues. We love watching the Little League World Series on television. Check out the raw talent in your area to a Little League game. You can’t beat the price and there are games all over. We have a field within walking distance of our house.

So what’s the bigg idea? Tap into your local community and have a bigg day out at the ball park!

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

heart Happy Valentine’s Day!

Couples all over the world are proclaiming their love for each other. In many cases, that love is shown with gifts – diamonds, chocolates, teddy bears, and roses.

It’s the roses we want to talk about today. Do you remember the song Rose Garden, first popularized by Lynn Anderson? It goes like this …

“I beg your pardon, I never promised you a rose garden.”

Did that help you remember it? The song continues …

“Along with the sunshine, there’s gotta be a little rain sometimes.”

Well, boy it sure is pouring right now!

Piling on

We face an economy that we haven’t seen before (or we were too young to really remember). And of course, financial disagreements are a leading cause of divorce as we discussed on a recent show.

When couples disagree, it makes a bad situation even worse. If relationship troubles get piled on top of financial challenges, it’s likely that the financial situation will only deteriorate more.

So you risk not only losing the roses, you may lose the whole rose garden! But there is a way to get the garden blooming again.

No one is an island. We all need key partners in life – personally and professionally. But the personal partners – whether you call them your husband, wife, significant other, life partner, mate, or something else – are the most vital part of our lives.

H.E.A.R.T.

So this Valentine’s Day, no matter what other gifts you exchange, give each other these give great gifts:

Help

Encouragement

Admiration

Respect

Teamwork

Help
We need to listen, really listen, to our mates. To what they’re saying and what they’re not saying. Because what they’re not saying may be more important.

They may be scared. They may be stressed. It’s important to try not to assume, to not try to read minds. Because we may very well assume the wrong thing.

Open up to your spouse. Don’t judge them. Be a refuge, a helper, in this time of storm.

Encouragement
We need to go beyond a willingness to help. We should actively encourage the person we love the most. Let them know that:

  • You have every confidence in them.
  • Together, you just know you’ll work through any difficulty you may be experiencing.
  • You will stick by them through thick and thin.

Admiration
We’ll keep going … moving beyond a willingness to help and some encouragement. Do you see how we’re stepping into this?

You started out as a fan. Are you still? Brag about him or her now and then. Publicly. Out loud. You used to!

Hollywood portrays love mostly as a noun in the movies and on television. Love is something that just “happens.” But love is also a verb. It implies action. We sometimes forget that.

Respect
Once we’ve reached the admiration level, respect will come relatively easily. We are so careful about what we say to other people. But sometimes we fail to use the same filters with the person closest to us.

We see each other all the time so we just say what’s on our mind. It’s only human, but it can harm our relationship. We should treat our spouses with more respect than we treat anyone else. After all, they deserve it … they put up with us!

Teamwork

Now with the other four pieces of H.E.A.R.T. in place, we’re ready for teamwork. Make quality time for each other so your relationship remains strong. Work on your problems together. If opposites attract, use that to your advantage. Your two brains can find a solution that neither of you would have thought of on your own.

Teamwork really will make the dream work!
