James Truslow Adams coined this phrase in 1931 in his book, The Epic of America. Here’s how he defined it:

The American Dream is “that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement.

It is a difficult dream for the European upper classes to interpret adequately, and too many of us ourselves have grown weary and mistrustful of it.

It is not a dream of motor cars and high wages merely, but a dream of social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to attain to the fullest stature of which they are innately capable, and be recognized by others for what they are, regardless of the fortuitous circumstances of birth or position.”

The optimal divider

Marketers divide people into niches. Politicians divide people into voting blocks. Society divides people into classes.

Adams says the American Dream is “a difficult dream for the European upper class to interpret adequately.” We would add that the ruling class in the U.S. increasingly seems to have the same difficulty.

The American Dream is the optimal divider:

  • It gives no credence the family we were born into
  • It couldn’t care less where we went to school
  • It pays no attention to our current title or position
  • It doesn’t really care what you’ve done in the past
  • Its only concern is your potential and the actions you take to live up to it

The American Dream is about the future – your future.

You can realize the American Dream by “doing your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming,” as John Wooden said.

Nothing can stop you from living the American Dream except you!

The American Dream is and isn’t American

So now we come to the question posed in the title: Is the American Dream Un-American?

Absolutely not! Although, sadly, there seems to be an increasing tide of sentiment against:

  • climbing your way up
  • working hard to reach BIGG success
  • making the American Dream come true for you

No, the American Dream is not Un-American. It is uniquely American – for a simple reason.

America was founded on ideals. One of those principles was that government should serve the people and not the other way around.

The Founders designed a government to stay out of the way of its citizens. If you were one of them, they wanted to insure that you could live your life on your own terms.

The promise of the American Dream has brought people to the United States for centuries. It’s the diversity of those people – the melting pot – which has given America its edge. So we see that…

The American Dream isn’t the American Dream at all.

It’s the People’s Dream.

It’s the dream of every human being – no matter where they happen to call home. We all want:

  • to be judged on our own merit
  • the opportunity to create a better life for ourselves and our loved ones
  • to see if we can capitalize on that opportunity

Historically, America has been the place where BIGG goal-getters could realize those dreams. But the People’s Dream has no borders.

So the Dream is not just American. It spans the entire globe.

It’s open to any citizenry of any country that creates an environment where entrepreneurship can thrive. When that happens:

Two interesting questions to ask yourself. Although – the answers may be at odds with each other, at least at times until…

…you put away small-mindedness and put on your entrepreneurial thinking cap.

Think strategically to live your dream life!

When you do this, you realize that these two seemingly opposing questions actually work hand-in-hand.

Begin with want

You can’t expect to get somewhere that you never plan to go to. Is it possible? Sure. Is it likely? Of course not.

In fact, it’s unlikely. In those few instances where it happens, it’s just sheer dumb luck.

So place “want” first. Define it. What exactly do you want?

Take some time to really think about it. At first, just list your answers. Then get away – for an hour, a day, a week. It’s up to you. But give yourself some space.

When you look at the items on your list:

  • Ask “Why?”

    Don’t ask it just once. Keep asking until you have a real sense of the motivation behind the item. You may ask “Why” (or a question that hints at it) five or more times to get to your true motivation.

    In some instances, you may discover that an item just isn’t that important on further reflection. Don’t be timid. Idea elimination is just as important as idea generation.

  • Look for common themes

    It’s likely you will spot themes in your list. Some of the items may have to do with work. Others will be for home. Some may be both.

    These are just examples of connections. Draw a line between items with a common theme.

This is a process. It doesn’t have to be done all at once. And here’s another secret – it’s never done. You will almost surely redefine some aspects of your dream as you pursue it.

The “want” question clarifies the what. It helps you settle in on your vision. Now you’re ready for the next question.

Then think should

What should you do today to live your dream life someday? This is about the “how” – defining what it will it take to get from where you are to where you want to be?

Map out the steps to BIGG success. This will help you set priorities. You’ll be better able to say “No” to things that don’t move you further ahead. By eliminating those things, you’ll have the time for your most important day-to-day activities.

The “what” question helps you clarify the BIGG picture. The “should” question helps you understand the required day-to-day activities.

Together, they lead to BIGG success!

Unfortunately, the masses stop there. But you aren’t part of the crowd. You’re a BIGG goal-getter. You’re a winner.

So you will take charge to create your dream life. You are the entrepreneur of a very important enterprise – your life.

Today, we want to talk about an option you may not realize you have – you can sponsor your own lottery.

Let’s talk about the differences between state-sponsored lotteries and your lottery. For simplification, we’ll just refer to state-sponsored lotteries as “the lottery.”

Fantasies versus reality

The lottery deals in fantasies. As we said earlier, millions of people were thinking about what they would do if they won.

As an entrepreneur, your lottery deals with reality. You help people solve their most pressing problems.

Luck versus a guarantee

The lottery is based on luck. People pay money for the remote chance of winning.

As an entrepreneur, your lottery guarantees that the fortunate people you serve will win. All they have to do is accept the solutions you offer.

No value to most versus value to all

The odds of winning this lottery were about 1 in 176 million. The lottery offers no value to most of the people who play.

They give up their hard-earned money for what turns out to be a worthless piece of paper.

As an entrepreneur, you know that you have to add value in the lives of others to create value for yourself.

You provide the right solution for a small price. So with your lottery, everyone wins!

State-sponsored lotteries capitalize the fantasies of the multitude to reward the few.

As an entrepreneur, you do the exact opposite. Entrepreneurs invest to make everyone’s dream come true. That’s BIGG Success!

Leap Ahead to Be a Success

Leap past the past

You are where you are. Be grateful for it.
You may have been wronged. Forgive the person.
You may have failed. Forget about it.

Of course, there are lessons when we don’t succeed. See this for what it is – an opportunity to learn.

Once you’ve done that, move forward. No more energy needs to be directed at what didn’t happen.

You may have regrets. If they can be corrected, do so.
If they involve another person, ask for grace.
If you can’t reach them, do something special for someone else.

Leap to the future

What does life on your own terms mean to you?
Picture it in your mind using all your senses.
Then see yourself living the dream right now.

All great accomplishments are first lived out in the mind.

The more clearly you can envision it, the more it becomes part of you. Feel this dream being absorbed by your mind, your heart, and your soul.

Leap ahead today

This is where the real action takes place. In fact, it’s where all success is achieved – in the present, today, right now.

You’ll never leap ahead by focusing on the past. As we said earlier, be grateful today for all that you are and all that you have.

Likewise, you’ll never leap ahead by focusing on the future. Form your vision of the future. Live it out in your mind today.

But then it’s time to get to the serious work. Your vision shows you the destination. Now it’s time to drive toward it.

What is the most important thing you can do today to move you closer to your dream? Do it.

No matter what else comes up, get it done. You’ll never get where you want to be unless you put your focus in action.

You may have other obligations. Things may come up.

Be realistic about what you can accomplish. But the more attention you pay today to your most important things, the sooner you’ll leap ahead.

Leap ahead little by little, over and over

No matter how much you may accomplish, BIGG success doesn’t happen in one day. It’s cumulative.

You have to focus on accomplishing your most important things day after day.

And you don’t leap from the ground floor to the top of a giant skyscraper. There are no elevators or escalators.

You have to climb the stairway to BIGG success. Step by step, floor by floor, you reach ever greater heights little by little.

What you do today matters little. Yet what you do today makes all the difference in the world. Focus on getting to the next floor. Take the next step. It leads to BIGG success!

4 Keys to the Life of Your Dreams

keys to your dream life | BIGG SuccessWe recently saw the movie, How Do You Know. We give it two BIGG thumbs up.

In case you haven’t seen it, Lisa (played by Reese Witherspoon) is a jock. She’s been a softball star her whole life.

However, now she’s struggling to keep up with the younger players. She doesn’t make the cut for the USA softball team.

In trying to find herself, she decides to see a psychiatrist. After all, she reasons, insurance pays for six sessions.

But she’s not comfortable being there. She leaves within minutes. She comes back.

The first two keys

The psychiatrist (played by Tony Shalhoub, one of our all-time favorites) gives her the two key things to life:

Figure out what you want.
Figure out who to ask for it.

We agree with the first one. But we don’t agree with the second. We think it should be:

Figure out how to get it.

“Who to ask” may be part of it, but it will only be a small part. We suspect this advice comes from the old saying, “It’s not what you know; it’s who you know.”

But that doesn’t work anymore (if it ever did). It may get you in the door. But it isn’t enough to close the deal.

You have to be good. You have to execute. You have to get results.

The third key

Which brings us to our third key to the life of your dreams:

Get it.

All the “figuring” in the world won’t do you much good if you don’t take action. Planning is an essential activity. It’s one which many people never give much thought.

Let’s say that a little differently: it’s an activity that unsuccessful people rarely undertake.

The first two keys help you identify the “what” (your life plan) and the “how” (your strategic plan). But they aren’t enough.

Contrary to popular advice, the life of your dream won’t suddenly be bestowed upon you just because you’ve figured out what you want.

You have to go. You have to get it yourself.

Or settle. Settle for what you have know. Settle for where you are now.

The choice is yours!

The fourth key

But we’re not through yet. There’s a fourth key if you want to live the life of your dreams.

Keep getting it.

You will face obstacles. This is the final filter on the path to BIGG success.

Losers quit. But you’re a winner.

You will live your dream life. You will reach BIGG success!
