Leaders are often depicted barking out orders. Willing subordinates eagerly jump at every bark. They run out and bring the ball back to the leader.

It doesn’t work that way anymore. Did it ever?

Maybe at one time – when people were relegated to a monotonous job, stamping out item after item.

All brawn, no brain. Just do, don’t think.

Success today comes from thinking and doing. You may need your people’s muscles too. But you definitely need their minds.

You need them to believe in you and your vision. You need them fully engaged. Then you’re powerful.

So one sign of power for an entrepreneurial leader is:

You don’t have to demand. You can ask.

You’re even more powerful if you don’t have to ask. They volunteer.

Real power isn’t about about squeezing every ounce of humanity out of your people. It’s not hand-to-hand combat. It’s not about conquering. It’s not warfare.

True power comes when you win hearts and minds. There’s an old saying that we just love, although we’re not sure of its origin. We keep it posted in our office so we see it every day.

Touch my mind – you have my thoughts.
Touch my heart – you have my love.
Touch my soul – you have my passion.
Touch all three and you have me.

Great entrepreneurial leaders appeal to all three. That’s how they get their voluntarily pushing to achieve the shared vision.

It’s because it’s more than a vision. It’s a cause. And it leads to BIGG success!

A Common Ailment Affecting Leaders Today

are you ready to lead for BIGG Success?There seems to be a common ailment affecting many leaders today. This ailment isn’t specific to industry. It has affected leaders in both the private and public sectors.

The problem with many leaders today is that they don’t lead. They follow. They respond. They react.

Public sector leaders

Our politicians look at the polls to decide on their positions. Of course, they need to be responsive to the people.

But we need leaders with BIGG visions. Their vision shouldn’t sway with the winds of public opinion.

It may not be popular at a given moment in time. Leaders don’t care.

They do care about importance. Great leaders help their people understand why achieving the vision is essential.

But as we said earlier, this ailment hasn’t just affected leaders in the public sector.

Private sector leaders

We’re told that marketing is everything. Business schools train future leaders to listen to their customers.

It’s now conventional wisdom. And, of course, it’s important. But it’s not enough.

We need leaders who know when to lead. As Henry Ford said, “If I would have asked my customers what they wanted, they would have said a faster horse.”

We need entrepreneurial leaders. We need leaders who see things that customers don’t.

We need inspirational leaders who bring innovative solutions to the market. We need leaders who bring customers products and services they never realized – and never would realize – that they needed.

We need entrepreneurial leaders – in the private sector and the public sector. The key to prosperity is leaders who have been cured of this ailment. It will lead to BIGG success.

Left-Handed, Dyslexic Entrepreneurs are the Most Successful Leaders

left-hand-writingLeft-handed people comprise about 10% of the population. Yet 57% (four) of our last seven Presidents have been lefties.

Presidents George W. Bush, Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter were righties. (Although, some people assert Reagan was a leftie who became ambidextrous because he was “cracked by the ruler” as a school kid.)

Presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush and Gerald Ford were all lefties. (Although, Ford said in his autobiography that he wrote with his right-hand when he was standing. We wonder which hand he used when he was tripping? :-)

Since we’re both lefties, we were really curious about this phenomenon. What explains this seemingly huge imbalance between the general population and Presidents? It’s simple:

Lefties make better leaders.

The left side of our brains is ruled by logic; the right side by intuition. Left-handed people are more likely to use the right hemisphere of their brain. While logic is important for leaders, intuition rules – especially in times of uncertainty and crisis.

The success of dyslexic entrepreneurs

We couldn’t find any studies about the handedness of entrepreneurs. However, about 10% of the population is dyslexic.

It is commonly cited that a disproportionate share of dyslexics are left-handed. Research has shown that dyslexia affects 35% of all entrepreneurs and just 1% of managers in the corporate world. This same study showed that, on average, dyslexic entrepreneurs:

  • are more likely to be serial entrepreneurs
  • grow their businesses faster
  • hire more employees

Coping for BIGG success

The researchers assert that entrepreneurs with dyslexia may grow faster as a coping mechanism. They learned to delegate at a young age, finding people who could easily do things they found difficult.

This ability to recruit and work with key people is an advantage in building an entrepreneurial enterprise. The need to hire people to help shore up the entrepreneur’s own strengths creates a pressure to grow faster.

As a business grows, structure is required to continue serving customers effectively and efficiently. The researchers postulate that entrepreneurs with dyslexia may feel stressed by this structure. So they choose to sell the business and move on to another entrepreneurial endeavor. Entrepreneurs without dyslexia are more comfortable with structure so they tend to stick with one business longer.

An opportunity for government officials and venture capitalists


Lefties make better leaders.

Lefties are more likely to be dyslexic.

People with dyslexia are more successful entrepreneurs.

Therefore, if we’re going to grow our economy…

We should look for left-handed people with dyslexia who want to be entrepreneurs.

Government officials should start programs to locate and encourage these potential venturers.

Venture capitalists can refine their screening process and just look for left-handed entrepreneurs with dyslexia.

What if you’re not a left-handed dyslexic?

Before we close, we want to speak to all of you who aren’t left-handed dyslexics. Is there any hope for you? Of course there is.

Remember that it’s April Fool’s Day!

We made two (at least) logic errors in our analysis above:

  • “Lefties make better leaders.”

    While it’s interesting that such a high percentage of our recent Presidents have been left-handed, there’s no evidence to indicate that lefties make better leaders than righties.

  • “It is commonly cited that a disproportionate share of dyslexics are left handed.”

    While we found numerous people making this assertion, we found no credible research to back it up.

The benefit of being YOU

So what’s the point? Was this whole post just a ruse? No.

We wanted to highlight that YOU have an advantage. It’s up to YOU to find it. Nature has endowed YOU with certain characteristics – handedness, dyslexic or not, etc.

Your environment has afforded YOU with certain experiences unique to YOU. Your perceptions, knowledge and know-how are all yours.

Your duty, should you choose to accept it, is to find where your endowments and your experiences are leading YOU.

Once you find that, YOU are ready to build a life, not just make a living. That’s life on your own terms! That’s BIGG success!

Leaders Must Control This Emotion

angryBigg success is life on your own terms. Growth, one of the five elements of bigg success, is our focus today.

If we’re going to succeed bigg, we must learn to control our emotions. Otherwise, they will control us. This is particularly true for leaders. One of the emotions leaders must control is their anger.



Anger works against communication


george I know from first-hand experience because I used to have a temper. Over time, I learned to control it because I realized it was counter-productive. People don’t respond well to it.



marylynnThat’s the point. It seems that, in most cases, people either withdraw or they get defensive. Neither one is conducive to productive communication.


Getting it under control


george What helped me the most in controlling my anger was taking a step back – not necessarily physically, but mentally. Although, I have physically taken a step back when someone got too aggressive. It kept the situation from escalating.



marylynnOf course, sometimes it pays to remove yourself from the environment altogether. Literally move to another space and relax for awhile before you respond.


Responding like Goldilocks


george I’ve coached a lot of people on just that issue. This is another Goldilocks principle. You want to get your response just right. There’s a tendency to respond too quickly – on the spot – and with anger.



marylynnYou may win the battle but lose the war. The person retreats but the relationship is damaged. Or the other person comes right back and the conversation escalates to an even higher level of anger.



george Exactly. The other side of it is leaders who don’t respond quickly enough. You have to get back to the person in a timely manner or you’re essentially rubber stamping their behavior. As a young manager, I probably responded too quickly. As I got older, I may have been too slow at times. Hopefully, in my advanced years, I’m getting closer to a good balance.


How you say it


marylynnKnow the purpose of your follow-up communication. Understand that how you say it is just as important as what you say. If you want to build the relationship, talk in the third person as much as possible. This is not the time for you-view. Try to frame the discussion like a reporter. Remove the personalities to diffuse the situation.


Controlled anger can be a tool if brought out under the right circumstances:

Focus on the situation

When you express controlled anger, your people know you’re serious. You have to be careful with this one, but it’s okay to express anger about a situation.

This is an important distinction – be angry about the situation, not the person. You will keep things moving in the right direction with this mental shift.

Use it infrequently

This tool isn’t productive is used regularly. It has to be the exception. Otherwise, you’re the boy who cried wolf! If you only pull it out once in a while, it can serve a useful purpose.

The bottom line is to be yourself. It’s okay to let your anger show now and then. Just keep it under control and keep your purpose in mind when you respond.

Then you’ll build relationships rather than tear them apart. You’ll build your people up rather than bring them down. That’s bigg success!

Three Levels of Freedom – Part 1

freedomIf our math is correct, we’re getting ready to celebrate the 233rd birthday of the Declaration of Independence here in the U.S. So we’ve been thinking about freedom.

Today we’ll start a five-part series on freedom. In the first three posts, we’ll explore three levels of freedom. They are: freedom of, freedom from, and freedom to.



Freedom of

With this level, we think freedom of expression, freedom of speech, freedom of religion and those sorts of things. If you’re like us, you probably think of these things as rights.

That is if you’re lucky enough to live in a society that guarantees those rights. If you’re reading this post, the odd are that you do live in such a society. We take away two points from this:

If you live in such a country, stop and be grateful.
You may see flaws in the system. You may see the misdoings of public officials. You may adamantly disagree with their decisions.

But, now and then, stop and be thankful that you live in a place where you can express your disagreement, if you choose to do so, without fear for your life. What a wonderful gift it is!

For the most part, societies that guarantee these freedoms do better than societies that don’t.
Isolation doesn’t work. It slows progress. In fact, isolation can actually cause societies to go backwards. We wonder, though, which comes first:

Does this infrastructure need to be in place so these countries develop, or …

Does this infrastructure result from the development?

We suspect the former – development is more likely to occur when this infrastructure is in place. When people feel that basic freedoms exist, they are free to develop things that aren’t likely to be developed in a closed society.

There is a lesson for leaders in this. Don’t just allow your people to express themselves; encourage it. That’s where creativity comes through.

Bigg success often starts with a bad idea. Ideas may seem bad at first hearing, but can evolve into something revolutionary. Such was the case about 233 years ago when a group of people declared their independence. We know the rest of that story!
